"Colors of Spring" is an exhibition of original artworks by members and friends of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts. This exhibit, located on the second floor of the Gato Building, is a celebration of the beautiful hues of spring. With vibrant flowers and landscapes, "Colors of Spring" showcases the joy of color, and the hope that accompanies each spring season. These two additional shows are part of the Art Council's "Art in Public Buildings" Program.

"Tamiami Trail: In the Beginning"  is an exhibition of original artworks by members of the Miami-based Tropical Botanic Artists collective. The botanical subjects were selected to mark the 100th anniversary in 2015 of the start of work on Tamiami Trail, a roadway begun in 1915 in Miami. Today it stretches across the Everglades from Miami to Naples and northward to Tampa, through areas that were largely wilderness a century ago. The exhibition's 30-plus plant portraits depict species found then and now in multiple vegetation zones along the route. Due to human intervention and changes in water flow, some of the plants illustrated are rare or endangered, and their predominant locations may have shifted, but all persist in South Florida's landscape.

Carol Tedesco sent over these Photos from the 2018 Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade. Since Carol was also nice enough to take the time to give us Descriptive Verbiage we'll give the complete version; and we'll do it in 3 or 4 Parts in this Issue

The 2018 Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade, presented by Key West Art & Historical Society and co-produced by Wonderdog Studios, kicked off at 5:00pm on Saturday from the Custom House Museum and wrapped up at the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater with a family-friendly festival and Poi Dog Pondering concert. Teams and individuals of all ages participated in the family-friendly, art-inspired, human-powered, mobile sculpture and art-bike parade (think art with parts that move) created in honor of the late Florida Keys rebel folk artist Stanley Papio. For more information on the annual cavalcade of moving art, visit papiokineticparade.com

Ryan Stachurski, front, Dee Dee Green, second from front, and a team of 9 fellow-peddlers, 3 dogs, and 3 pit crew took the "Golden Papio Award" trophy and a $1000 cash prize for their 46' long "Flagler's Comet," entry in Saturday's Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade. The team scavenged and built their kinetic conveyance consisting of 14 bicycles, 3 trikes, and 2 tandems all from rescued trash, including junk yard bikes, a bunk bed, wire shelves from an oven, old coolers, a used blender, cassette tapes, tire inner tubes, chicken wire, egg cartons, empty birth control packets, discarded couch cushioning, scrap PVC pipe, Ethernet cables, pipes scavenged from hurricane Irma damage, old bike chains, a satellite dish and more.
Martin Sykut, top, with pilot Brian Solis, bottom, both of Marathon, FL, took the "Out of this Weld" award for "Best overall kinetic sculpture float with the most intricate welding design" at Saturday's Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade, p resented by Key West Art & Historical Society and co-produced by Wonderdog Studios.

Frangipani Gallery is featuring a series of hurricane inspired paintings by Fran Decker. 1102 Duval as part of the First Friday Art Stroll on Upper Duval.
Originally inspired by Hurricane Katrina, Fran Decker completed the series "This Once Was Home" just before Hurricane Irma devastated the Florida Keys.  These detailed surrealistic paintings depict broken shells set against stormy backgrounds that were once home to the mollusk that built it.  The intricate insides of the shells are revealed and tinted pink to remind the viewer that a living creature once lived inside and created its shell home. All of them are poignant reminders of what we had and what we lost in the storm.

Our Magazine Will have Multiple Photo Features from Many of the Artists in Frangipani : Deborah Moore, William Welch, Paul Carmichael, Mark Hacker, Sandy Sun, Suzann D'Antonio, Sharon Wells, Helen Rebane, Terri Dallao, Karen Beauprie. Here is a few works from the other Fran Decker Wall

Above "Diving Board#1" by Ciara Rafferty Oil on Perspex 36"X48" (R) "Miami Ready" by Lizzie Gill Mixed Media Oil on Canvas 46"X60"

Color-splashed retro imagery, glamorized nostalgia and leisure studies of bygone eras comprise Gill and Rafferty's hyper-stylized representations of wholesome values and pleasures of "The Good Old Days". Gone is the time of The Great American Road Trip, with its novelty of futuristic hotels and motels that brought families together with blithe poolside lounging and Atomic Age idols. Gill and Rafferty draw inspiration from the 1950s and 60s, a time that for many Americans represented hope, postwar prosperity and freedom. With imagery of the American dream portrayed throughold fashioned values and Hollywood romance, Gill and Rafferty explore the richly nostalgic context of the people, places and icons of days long passed that now exist in a liminal space. These images of carefree summer fun and untroubled leisure occupy the dreams and desires of our modern sensibilities as the contemporary world flies by in hyper speed.

Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates Captain Outrageous in "That's Outrageous!" Exhibit

The Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the acclaimed late Key West artist Captain Outrageous in " That's Outrageous!," a retrospective featuring more than 40 works that explores his pop art style across several different mediums.  The exhibit opened  April 13, with a special reception held from 6:00pm-8:30pm in the Bryan Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.

Spanning nearly four decades in Key West, Captain Outrageous imprinted his indelible mark on the island with both his colorful artwork and personality.  He made the world his canvas and painted thousands of items - bicycles, scooters, furniture, clothing, mannequins, cars, camper vans, sinks, musical instruments, telephones, and even toilet seats - with a pop art design style à la Roy Lichtenstein, but with a flair and humor decidedly his own.  A true Key West character, he embodied the spirit of the island, and his creations are celebrated and collected by many.

" That's Outrageous!" runs through Sunday, June 24 and is sponsored in part by the Captain Outrageous Foundation. For more information, call Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at 305.295.6616 x 112 or visit  kwahs.org.   Your Museums.  Your Community.  It Takes an Island.

The heritage of our underwater world:Key West Art & Historical Society offers Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar

Key West Art & Historical Society has partnered with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research to offer a Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar opportunity in Key West, Thursday, June 14 - Saturday, June 16, which will include both classroom and open water diving components.

HADS was launched about a decade ago to address a lack of cultural resources information in most SCUBA training courses. The three-day course will explain the advantages of conserving historic shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources as they preserve information about our collective past as well as the vibrant ecosystems that grow around them. While targeted to diving leadership such as agency course directors, dive instructors, and heritage professionals, the program welcomes and has proven useful for professional and recreational divers, all of whom will gain a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites as part of the marine environment.

Fifteen new trees now grace Bayview Park, thanks to the donations by Texas Roadhouse Inc. and the Arbor Day Foundation and to the hard work of the volunteers who turned out today along with community services and master gardeners.  Vice Mayor Clayton Lopez read a proclamation naming May 11 th  as Texas Roadhouse Arbor Day. This is part of Texas Roadhouse's ongoing five-year commitment with the Arbor Day Foundation in helping to restore the tree canopies across America devastated by the hurricanes of 2017. The park now features four new royal poinciana, two mahogany, two strangler fig, two blolly, three tabebuia, and two cassia trees.
