Annual Key West Dachshund Walk is Sunday, December 31
On December 31
st Dachshund's, Dachshund impersonators, and their human companions will parade through downtown streets lined with adoring fans during the annual Key West Dachshund Walk. People and pets are invited to gather Sunday at noon at the corner of Fleming and Whitehead Streets before undertaking a three-block journey which will proceed down Fleming Street to Duval Street to Appelrouth Lane and back to Whitehead Street. Registration is not required. Costumes are encouraged, as are donations of dog and cat food for the Community Pet Pantry. The annual Key West Dachshund Walk

Key West Garden Club Meeting Jan 8
Garden Club member, Colin Cabot is hosting the showing of "the Gardener", a new movie about his father's fabulous creation - the "Quatre Temps" gardens in Canada.
The event will be a Fund Raiser for the Garden Club to help pay for the restoration of the gardens post IRMA.
The Studios of Key West have kindly agreed to host the event free of charge, in their large theater on the second floor of 533 Eaton street on

The movie is a feast for the senses - anyone with any interest in plants, gardening and creativity should not miss this spectacular film, which has been selected by all the major Film Festivals worldwide.

"Celebrate the Season" Winter Members Show
The Key West Art Center just opened "Celebrate the Season". Come step inside the Art Center to view new work by Florida Keys Artist Members, enjoy festive treats, and indulge in a glass of wine alongside talented local artists.
This show turns the entire gallery around to feature new works by over 40 well-known local artists such as Martha dePoo, Elizabeth Chamberlain, and Susan O'Neil, just to name a few. Also on exhibit will be the work of three new Artist Members: Gabrielle Wilson, Donna Nadeau, and David Klein.
The Key West Art Center is a non-profit community art center dedicated to promoting visual arts and to the advancement of local artists. The gallery is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Remember local art makes a beautiful gift your friends and loved ones are sure to treasure.

Artist Michael Palmer Sends Holiday Greetings and Tells Us : The GingerBread Square Gallery is hosting a benefit raffle for the FKSPCA begun Dec.1 and cullminating in a champagne. drawing of the winning ticket Dec.28 for a top hat I have done. Tickets are $5 and I've said "Win it and wear it for New Years' Eve or for some other inappropriate affair."
The point is, we are hoping to benefit NSPCA in Key West with all the extra work they've had resulting from intake of animals after Irma's visit to the keys. The hat is on view at Gingerbread

FKCC Showcases Student Research
The scientific work of six Florida Keys Community College students took the spotlight on campus this past Tuesday at the College's first ever Student Research Showcase. The event featured a variety of analyses, field work, and findings compiled by marine science students during internships and independent study experiences. Topics included seagrass restoration, shrimp aquaculture, protected coral monitoring, spawning aquarium fish, octopus ecology, and pillar coral assessment.
"The quality of work and depth of knowledge demonstrated are rare even among graduate level students, and our students are only in their first two years of college," said FKCC marine science professor Dr. Michelle Walsh.
FKCC plans to expand the event in upcoming semesters to include student research and internships across all fields of study at the College. "We are fortunate to have such dedicated faculty and industry partners to help our students find unique and rich experiences that will help them tremendously when they enter the workforce." said Lana Sielski, FKCC's Director of Marine Science and Technology. "We're looking forward to sharing more of our students' successes in the future."
FKCC student Emily Hower shares results of her study," Long-Term Monitoring of Endangered Species Act-Listed Corals in the Dry Tortugas National Park." Hower is earning associate degrees in Marine Environmental Technology and Diving, Business and Technology as well as a certificate in Professional Research Diving.
FKCC student Sara Rose Cagle points out damage to a segment of pillar coral found in the Dry Tortugas. Cagle, who is earning an associate degree in Marine Environmental Technology and a certificate in Professional Research Diving, presented "Pillar of Hope: Identifying and Cataloging the Genotypes of Dendrogyra Cylindrus to Save the Species."
FKCC student Hunter Ledbetter explains how a mother octopus protects her eggs in his study, "Octopus Life History and Ecology: An Annotated Photo-Technical Report." Ledbetter, who is earning associate degrees in Marine Environmental Technology and Diving, Business and Technology as well as certificates in Professional Dive Instruction and Professional Research Diving, chronicled two brooding octopus mothers daily in the College's dive lagoon.

Boating Skills and Seamanship course January 9, 2018 thru January 25, 2018. It is a three week program, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:00 to 9:30 P.M. It will be held at the Big Pine Key United Methodist Church (Fellowship Hall), 280 Key Deer Blvd, Big Pine Key.

Two Fresh Faces at Frangipani Gallery Friday January 5
Frangipani Gallery is pleased to start the new year off with our two newest artists, Gabrielle Wilson and Sharon Wells, at an opening reception Friday January 5, 6-8 PM as part of the First Friday Art Stroll on Upper Duval. 1102 A&B Duval St, Key West. The show runs through January 31.
Sharon Wells at Gallery A paints houses in acrylics, oils and with digital enhancement. She also documents the genealogy of our island's houses for homeowners. These visual projects incorporate both art and history into handsome displays.
Gabrielle Wilson showing at Gallery B presents "Balance." Riding the waves of change whether welcome or not, requires balance. This body of work reflects what Gabrielle has learned over the past years; lessons about how to look to the positive; lessons that are provided by unforeseen circumstances. Your reaction to what is happening externally can create either peace or unrest. The direction in which you choose to focus can elevate you or not. Gabrielle has found these lessons even more important in the aftermath of Irma's upheaval and she wishes to share them through her art.

From 1977 - 1993 the Full Moon Saloon was the place to hang in Key West and Listen to the music of Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys or the Survivors. These two iconic Key West bands sometimes alternated weekly gigs. The Moon was dark, the AC and the beer were always cold, and the music was the best in town. The crowds were mostly locals and included the famous and some of the infamous. When they moved from United Street to 1202 Simonton (current location of Camille's) Jimmy Buffet opened the new venue and returned to sit in often. It closed July 18, 1993 - Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys played music until 2pm the next day.
Join us along with Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys and Din Allen and the Survivors to relive some of those raucous days when smugglers drank with customs agents by night and eluded them by day.
See old friends, enjoy the music of the Full Moon Saloon with two of Key West's greatest bands.

Key West Art & Historical Society presents "Key West Collects," an exhibit of unusual and wonderful collections of knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, tchotchkes, artwork and other objects collected by Key West/Florida Keys residents. Key West Art & Historical Society presents "On the Waterfront: Truman Annex Artists," an exhibit that puts the spotlight on a relatively unaccounted for era of creativity that helped launch some of the island's most celebrated artists. The exhibit features historic and contemporary works of some of the artists that rented spaces for use as studios in decommissioned naval warehouses, machine-shops, and residential facilities between 1974-1986, after the U.S. Navy abandoned their base in the present-day Truman Annex. During A Recent City Commission meeting, Police Chief Donie Lee announced the promotion of Officer Jeffrey Dean to Sergeant.
(L) Sgt. Dean has been with the Department since 2010. Chief Lee swore Sgt. Dean in under his new capacity and pinned him with his new badge.

Key West Police Chief Donie Lee and City Manager Jim Scholl recognized Sgt. Robert Allen for his 30 years of service and his retirement at the City Commission meeting.
Sgt. Allen started with the police department in December of 1987. Because he was just 19 years old, one of his first assignment was working undercover sting operations on merchants who were illegally selling alcohol to minors.
In 1989, he was shot in the line of duty, along with now-retired Officer Stephen Hammers.
Sgt. Allen earned many accolades for his service. He was inducted into the American Police Hall of Fame; he was awarded the Silver Star for bravery; he received an award from the Legion of Honor. He was named Officer of the Year by the Key West Police Department as well as the by the State of Florida. In his honor, then-Mayor Tony Tarracino proclaimed November 14th as Police Officers' Day in perpetuity.
He was promoted to Sergeant in March of 2003.
In addition to founding the Honor Guard, Sgt. Allen provided many firsts during his 30-year career. He founded the Love Fund, which provides support for members of the department in times of need. He was one of the first marine officers, and he founded the Dive Team. Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, he became the Department's first port security supervisor.
In addition, Sgt. Allen has served as a traffic homicide investigator, been a member of the Special Response Team, and served as a radar instructor. He was also the Department's first motorcycle unit instructor.

Mote's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital admitted nine endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles and one threatened green sea turtle Friday - helping with a team effort to rehabilitate 46 cold-stunned turtles initially brought to the New England Aquarium (NEAQ) in Quincy, Massachussetts. The turtles traveled Friday, Dec. 8 by private jet from NEAQ to four Florida facilities: Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Florida Aquarium and Sea World Orlando. Part 2 Last Stand Meeting 1/16/2018
The Community College is an outstanding resource for high school graduates as well as Florida Keys residents interested in preparing for employment opportunities in ecotourism, diving, marine mammal behavior and training, aquaculture and environmental technology. We're happy to help spread the word about FKCC degrees and life-long learning programs.
"In addition to our courses, FKCC faculty is conducting significant research that is made possible by our unique location. Graduates in the Marine Science program have continued at our partner universities to earn Bachelor's degrees and beyond" said Dr. Rice.
Formed in 1987, this will be the 30
th Annual Meeting for Last Stand. The board represents Last Stand members by frequently commenting on quality of life impacts and environmental issues at city and county meetings. "We are more effective when we represent a larger group throughout the Florida Keys. Memberships are available at our web site:

Last Stand has been formed to promote, preserve and protect the quality of life in Key West, the Florida Keys and their environs, with a particular emphasis on the natural environment.
