The Friends of the Key West Library presents "Music in the Palm Garden" featuring folk duo Hungrytown at 6pm, Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Library's Palm Garden, 700 Fleming St. Hungrytown's music has received extensive radio airplay worldwide and has appeared on several television shows, including Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," IFC's "Portlandia" and Netflix's "Lady Dynamite." Garden Club member, Colin Cabot is hosting the showing of "the Gardener", a new movie about his father's fabulous creation - the "Quatre Temps" gardens in Canada.
The event will be a Fund Raiser for the Garden Club to help pay for the restoration of the gardens post IRMA.

"Celebrate the Season" Winter Members Show
The Key West Art Center Winters Member's Show "Celebrate the Season". Come step inside the Art Center to view new work by Florida Keys Artist Members, enjoy festive treats, and indulge in a glass of wine alongside talented local artists.
This show turns the entire gallery around to feature new works by over 40 well-known local artists such as Martha dePoo, Elizabeth Chamberlain, and Susan O'Neil, just to name a few. Also on exhibit will be the work of three new Artist Members: Gabrielle Wilson, Donna Nadeau, and David Klein.
The Key West Art Center is a non-profit community art center dedicated to promoting visual arts and to the advancement of local artists. The gallery is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Remember local art makes a beautiful gift your friends and loved ones are sure to treasure.

Mario Sanchez 1908-2005 inducted into The Smithsonian
First Key West Artist to be Inducted
The Board of Regents, which includes the Chief Justice of the Supreme Count of the United States and Vice President of the United States approved the art of Mario Sanchez for the permanent collection of America's museum. Chief Curator, Virginia Mecklenburg of The Smithsonian American Art Museum received the large Mario Sanchez intaglio donated by the Edward B. & Joan T. Knight Foundation.
The Smithsonian, America's museum, was founded in 1846 in order to develop an American national identity. The Smithsonian has become the world's largest museum since it's founding more than 170 years ago. The Chief Curator, Deputy Curator and Folk Art Curator enthusiastically received the artwork from Nance Frank, The Gallery on Greene who facilitated the donation.
It is a great honor to be inducted into the permanent collection of SAAM. It was one of Mario Sanchez aspirations. The Chief Curator is considering, Men of Art & Intellect for the semi-permanent exhibit, Experience America.
At first glance Sanchez work is charming folk art. However delve into the tableau and Key West, an island which has embraced diversity for 150 years becomes dramatically complex. The intaglio depicts Sanchez's father reading to the cigar makers at the Eduardo H. Gato Cigar Factory. The factory employed 500 people of every color, men & women, Bahamian, Americans, Cuban, Chinese, Jews and Italians are pictured sitting side-by-each. At the time they were the best paid workers in the United States and all were unionized. They choose what the reader would read to them in the afternoon. In the morning in was the international newspaper hot of the ferry from Havana that The Reader delivered without a microphone or any other device to the 500 workers.

Thursday, January 18,
2018, the Pier House Goes Pink for the fourth year in a row in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness. Beginning at 6 pm, a fashion show celebrating local breast cancer survivors, will take place accompanied by live music from the Prime Movers. Beautiful jewelry pieces will be auctioned and raffle prizes awarded including flat screen TV.
Enjoy a special pink drink is being created for this event and wonderful appetizers compliments of the Pier House.
$10 suggested donation at the door. All funds raised from this event goes to Zonta's program providing mammograms for un-insured and under-insured women in the Florida Keys.
Tickets for 2017 Zonta Chance Drawings are still available. Prizes include & Night Stay in Ocean City, NJ, Pandora Bracelet from Little Switzerland, Keys Cuff Bracelet from Emeralds International or $500.00 in cash. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 tickets for $20.00. Winners will be drawn at the Pier House on the 18th. Raffle tickets are great stocking stuffers or holiday greeting cards inserts. Faculty, staff, and friends of Florida Keys Community College brought dozens of toys for local children to the College's annual Caribbean Holiday Party on Tuesday hosted by FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra and his wife Josephine. The toys were donated to Samuel's House, a Keys-based non-profit organization that offers housing and supportive services for homeless women and intact families.
"The faculty, staff, and friends of the College are more than just employees who do their jobs and collect a paycheck. Their generosity at times like these demonstrates their commitment to help the less fortunate in our community," praised Gueverra.

Two Fresh Faces at Frangipani Gallery Friday January 5
Frangipani Gallery is pleased to start the new year off with our two newest artists, Gabrielle Wilson and Sharon Wells, at an opening reception Friday January 5, 6-8 PM as part of the First Friday Art Stroll on Upper Duval. 1102 A&B Duval St, Key West. The show runs through January 31.
Sharon Wells at Gallery A paints houses in acrylics, oils and with digital enhancement. She also documents the genealogy of our island's houses for homeowners. These visual projects incorporate both art and history into handsome displays.
Gabrielle Wilson showing at Gallery B presents "Balance." Riding the waves of change whether welcome or not, requires balance. This body of work reflects what Gabrielle has learned over the past years; lessons about how to look to the positive; lessons that are provided by unforeseen circumstances. Your reaction to what is happening externally can create either peace or unrest. The direction in which you choose to focus can elevate you or not. Gabrielle has found these lessons even more important in the aftermath of Irma's upheaval and she wishes to share them through her art.

will feature a new collection of colorful mixed media paintings by local artist Jill Caldwell. To celebrate Jill's new works, SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5th.
Jill Caldwell was born in Quincy, Massachusetts. She received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 1997. After graduation she promptly moved to Key West, an island she had fallen in love with as a child. "I knew this magical island with its bold vivid colors, gorgeous sunlight, and translucent ocean was a place I needed to call home," she says. While living here, she met her future husband and, on a whim in 2005, they left Key West and moved to Rockland, Maine. She now splits her time between Key West and Maine.

The Board of Directors of the Anne McKee Artists Fund, Inc. announces the date of Friday, February 9, 2018 for their annual fine art auction. The auction will again take place at The Studios of Key West. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the auction, led by Tom Luna, will begin at 8:00 p.m. Champagne and desserts will be included in the $25 ticket price and there will also be a cash bar. Key West Art & Historical Society presents "On the Waterfront: Truman Annex Artists," an exhibit that puts the spotlight on a relatively unaccounted for era of creativity that helped launch some of the island's most celebrated artists. The exhibit features historic and contemporary works of some of the artists that rented spaces for use as studios in decommissioned naval warehouses, machine-shops, and residential facilities between 1974-1986, after the U.S. Navy abandoned their base in the present-day Truman Annex. Henry Flagler, one of Florida's best-known historical figures, is to be the subject of the next Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series event, presented by John Blades, Executive Director Emeritus of Palm Beach's Flagler Museum. For history buffs or anyone seeking insight into the classic architecture of Key West, Key West Art & Historical Society will host a series of educational and entertaining walking tours led by local artist and historian Sharon Wells on select Saturdays from January through March. The first is to take place on Saturday, January 13 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, with a focus on Truman Annex and Historic Whitehead Street.
This tour will begin at The Custom House Museum on Front Street, the site of court adjudications for Wreckers' salvage claims and the 1898 Battleship Maine Court of Inquiry. Tour-goers will walk approximately a mile, heading up Whitehead Street to Truman Annex, and finish on Green Street at the Porter family properties dating from 1840. Highlights will include the 19th Century naval structures, including the Machine Shop, Marine Hospital and Surgeon's Quarters, President Eisenhower's WWII Headquarters, and the historic properties of Banyan Resorts.
Wells will reveal the evolution of the waterfront and examine the impact of World War II, the auction and privatization of the Naval Base in 1986, and rehabilitation of buildings as residential/commercial properties. Participants can also anticipate Wells' narratives on Key West's early settlement as they peruse the spectacular Classic Revival architectural homes and noteworthy landscape along Whitehead Street.
Originally landing in Key West in 1976 to help document the buildings for National Register of Historic Places expansion, Wells combined her many talents of writing, photography, painting and history to open her own gallery (Key West Light Gallery) and founded the now out-of-print Key West Walking & Biking Guide in 1984, upon which The Society tour offerings are based. Today she turns her efforts to House History research and documentation for historic homeowners, her own art projects, and these tour offerings for Key West Art & Historical Society, of which she has long been a board member.
The tour series is presented by The Society as part of their commitment to providing activities and programs that highlight the abundant history and cultural assets of Key West and the Florida Keys. Mote's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital admitted nine endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles and one threatened green sea turtle Friday - helping with a team effort to rehabilitate 46 cold-stunned turtles initially brought to the New England Aquarium (NEAQ) in Quincy, Massachussetts. The Community College is an outstanding resource for high school graduates as well as Florida Keys residents interested in preparing for employment opportunities in ecotourism, diving, marine mammal behavior and training, aquaculture and environmental technology. We're happy to help spread the word about FKCC degrees and life-long learning programs.

Formed in 1987, this will be the 30
th Annual Meeting for Last Stand. The board represents Last Stand members by frequently commenting on quality of life impacts and environmental issues at city and county meetings.
