Key West Art & Historical Society hosted Naval Air Station Key West's Centennial Celebration last week at the Custom House Museum, with a special exhibit and reception which kicked off with opening remarks by Commanding Officer Capt. Bobby Baker
"Our armed services are crucial to our country, and in celebrating the centenary of naval aviation in Key West, we have recognized the symbiotic relationship enjoyed by the Navy and Florida Keys community," says Society Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D.
The special exhibit focuses on the region's naval aviation, a natural complement to the museum's current "The Navy in Key West" exhibit of unique images, artifacts, uniforms, military memorabilia, and interactive displays about Key West's maritime past.
"A number of our museum visitors actually served in Key West during various periods, including World War II, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Cold War," says Convertito. "Engaging with them and hearing their stories has made this extra special."
Both the Naval Air Station centennial exhibit and the landmark "The Navy in Key West"exhibit run until the year's end.

Annual Key West Dachshund Walk is Sunday, December 31
On December 31
st Dachshund's, Dachshund impersonators, and their human companions will parade through downtown streets lined with adoring fans during the annual Key West Dachshund Walk. People and pets are invited to gather Sunday at noon at the corner of Fleming and Whitehead Streets before undertaking a three-block journey which will proceed down Fleming Street to Duval Street to Appelrouth Lane and back to Whitehead Street. Registration is not required. Costumes are encouraged, as are donations of dog and cat food for the Community Pet Pantry. The annual Key West Dachshund Walk

Holiday Jazz Concert 12/22
Christmas comes early this year when pianist and composer Larry Smith returns to The Studios of Key West to present a fresh and soulful take on holiday classics.
On Friday, December 22 at 8pm, joined by his long his longtime collaborators, bassist Joe Dallas and drummer Skipper Kripitz, Smith presents a holiday jazz concert with a fun lineup of songs - including his original compositions. Smith's wife and musical partner, vocalist Christine Cordone Smith, sings.
"Long considered one of Key West's finest musicians and best showmen, when Larry Smith takes the stage you're guaranteed a truly unique island experience," says Elena Devers, deputy director. "He wows audiences with his own clever compositions, and his fresh and unique spin on beloved holiday songs keeps people coming back for more."
Smith's musical vision is original and exhilarating, and his insistence on improvisation is a counterpoint to a meticulously rehearsed program. Classic songs become new again as Smith expands his arrangements beyond normal envelopes of safety.
"Sure, we can perform the Christmas songs traditionally and that's great, but our job is to make you feel like you're hearing White Christmas for the very first time ever," says Smith. "We'll deliver a great lineup and hopefully, take you back to the joy of being a kid again. After all, isn't that what the holidays are about?"
On-the-edge musical leadership is a normal for Smith and by setting up a challenging terrain for his musicians to negotiate, he creates an experience for the audience that is fun, thrilling, and hopefully, spiritually moving.

"Celebrate the Season" Winter Members Show
The Key West Art Center just opened "Celebrate the Season". Come step inside the Art Center to view new work by Florida Keys Artist Members, enjoy festive treats, and indulge in a glass of wine alongside talented local artists.
This show turns the entire gallery around to feature new works by over 40 well-known local artists such as Martha dePoo, Elizabeth Chamberlain, and Susan O'Neil, just to name a few. Also on exhibit will be the work of three new Artist Members: Gabrielle Wilson, Donna Nadeau, and David Klein.

Boating Skills and Seamanship course January 9, 2018 thru January 25, 2018. It is a three week program, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:00 to 9:30 P.M. It will be held at the Big Pine Key United Methodist Church (Fellowship Hall), 280 Key Deer Blvd, Big Pine Key.
The cost of the program is $55 per person (materials included) or $80 for two people with shared materials.

Elizabeth St's. for our annual Christmas Show & Shine. The event will be the eighth year collecting unwrapped toys for the children at the Monroe County Domestic Abuse Shelter. Seven trophies will be presented for Best Paint, Engine, Interior, Original, Custom and Best in Show. Bring a gift to vote for the " Peoples Choice". We will FILL a pickup full of gifts this year.

From 1977 - 1993 the Full Moon Saloon was the place to hang in Key West and Listen to the music of Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys or the Survivors. These two iconic Key West bands sometimes alternated weekly gigs. The Moon was dark, the AC and the beer were always cold, and the music was the best in town. The crowds were mostly locals and included the famous and some of the infamous. When they moved from United Street to 1202 Simonton (current location of Camille's) Jimmy Buffet opened the new venue and returned to sit in often. It closed July 18, 1993 - Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys played music until 2pm the next day.
Join us along with Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys and Din Allen and the Survivors to relive some of those raucous days when smugglers drank with customs agents by night and eluded them by day.
See old friends, enjoy the music of the Full Moon Saloon with two of Key West's greatest bands.

Key West Art & Historical Society exhibits Florida Keys residents' curious collections at the Custom House Museum
THIS IS A SPECIAL BATCH OF TRINKETS THAT CONNIE GILBERT GAVE TO THE KWAHS
Key West Art & Historical Society presents "Key West Collects," an exhibit of unusual and wonderful collections of knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, tchotchkes, artwork and other objects collected by Key West/Florida Keys residents. In the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.

Get into the holiday spirit at Key West Art & Historical Society's Holiday Concert & Bazaar on Thursday, December 21st from 5PM to 9PM, located on the sweeping historic porch and promenade of the Custom House Museum.
The celebration will feature Key West's finest artisans, musicians and choirs, along with a spectacular holiday light show presented by Key West High School's 'Conch 5 Studios' students, with proceeds to benefit the Bahama Village Music Program & Society educational programs.
Visitors can browse hundreds of unique gift options at this signature holiday event while enjoying music, food and libations with eggnog and a champagne bar to lift the frazzled 'final shopping days' spirits.
Society members can also enjoy a 30% discount (normally 20% for members) at the museum's store from 6PM to 8PM, and
VIP membership table with champagne and treats.
And of course, Santa will be on hand for last minute requests and 'selfie' photos. Parlin Meyer, with the Old Island Restoration Foundation, came to the December city commission meeting to let the community know that the organization has grant funding available to repair and restore historic structures with hurricane damage.
According to Meyer, OIRF has over $32,000 available in their annual grant program, and the organization is giving hurricane recovery projects priority as they determine which proposal or proposals will receive grant money.
Meyer pointed out that not-for-profits and individual residents of Key West are eligible for grants. She noted that, over the past few grant cycles, only non-profits have applied. OIRF is hoping that individuals who qualify will also apply for this grant funding aimed at preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of Key West.
Grant proposals are due by January 12, 2018. For more information, go to

The Key West Police Department is kicking off its Safe Streets Motorcycle and Scooter campaign to improve motorcycle and scooter safety across the island. With the help of a $50,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation, officers will be stepping up education and enforcement of laws pertaining to motorcycles and to scooters. With your financial support, Hometown has been able to promote the exchange of political viewpoints and ideas by sponsoring forums, debates and other political events. These programs allow you, the voters, to more fully consider the merits of the candidates and their proposals.
I am writing to respectfully ask you to financially support Hometown's
non-partisan mission
to host and present candidate events in 2018 - all toward cultivating qualified local candidates, promoting positive campaigns and educating voters. This will surely be a very active election year! Individual and Family Memberships are $40 and $55, respectively. Of course, you may wish to contribute more generously; other levels of giving are on the Hometown website.
