It's the talk of the town!  Delight your choreodrama senses by experiencing
Martha Graham's Dance of Life, the pinnacle of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra's 20th Anniversary Season led by Founder|Music Director Sebrina Maria Alfonso .  This enthralling evening features an historic collaboration between the world class Symphony and the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company, America's oldest dance company presenting some of the world's leading dancers.   Martha Graham is widely recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th. Century, along with Picasso, James Joyce, Igor Stravinsky, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Time magazine named her "Dancer of the Century" and People magazine tagged her among the female "icons of the Century." According to Janet Wilber, Company Artistic Director and former Principal Dancer, "Martha was a revolutionary who created a new and very American style of dancing." Wilber danced many of Graham's greatest roles including roles created for her by Graham.  Since 2005, she has been teaching, lecturing, and directing Graham ballets internationally.  Denise Vale, Senior Artistic Associate, joined the Company in 1985 and also attained Principal Dancer rank.   During its 90-year history, the Company has received audience and critical acclaim in over 50 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Russia, and the Middle East.

End of the Year Message from the Executive Director Jed Dodds; due to Space Constraints the complete message is in their weekly section below :
Dear  Friend of The Studios,

As this wild ride of a year comes to a close, I suspect we're all thinking of the gifts we've given, and the ones we've received, the chapter that's closing, and  the one that's about to begin.

At The Studios, we have so much to be grateful for: a sturdy home on a beautiful island,  a community of friends , a tireless pool of volunteers, and a bounty of artistic talent all around us.  All this has been given to us.

Executive Director Arlo Haskell Sent us a really interesting E-Mail about KWLS. I Will hopefully get a direct link for the Complete Message to insert in the Jan 15 Issue. ( Perhaps try their Website and Facebook Sites); Here is the First Paragraph and then to follow a Donation Link.  "For nearly forty years, the Key West Literary Seminar has cultivated a thriving literary culture in this southernmost island city. When our founder, David Kaufelt, asked a group of New York publishers in 1982 to send their top writers south for a lecture series, they refused, telling him that "no one in Florida cares about books." So David took it upon himself, calling on friends and calling in favors, and proving the industry wrong along the way. Today the Seminar attracts the most culturally significant writers in the English-speaking world as it builds upon Key West's rich heritage as the home of great American authors including Ernest Hemingway and Elizabeth Bishop. Readers from all over flock to what many consider one of the preeminent literary events of its kind."  Hit DONATION Link. Thanks Arlo Keep up the Great Work ; KWLS is such an integral Part of Making Key West such a Diverse Upscale Destination and Place to Live.

Faculty, staff, and friends of Florida Keys Community College brought dozens of toys for local children to the College's annual Caribbean Holiday Party on Tuesday hosted by FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra and his wife Josephine. The toys were donated to Samuel's House, a Keys-based non-profit organization that offers housing and supportive services for homeless women and intact families.

"The faculty, staff, and friends of the College are more than just employees who do their jobs and collect a paycheck.  Their generosity at times like these demonstrates their commitment to help the less fortunate in our community," praised Gueverra.

For the month of January, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,  www.saltislandprovisions.com )  will feature a new collection of colorful mixed media paintings by local artist Jill Caldwell. To celebrate Jill's new works, SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5th.
Jill Caldwell was born in Quincy, Massachusetts. She received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 1997. After graduation she promptly moved to Key West, an island she had fallen in love with as a child. "I knew this magical island with its bold vivid colors, gorgeous sunlight, and translucent ocean was a place I needed to call home," she says. While living here, she met her future husband and, on a whim in 2005, they left Key West and moved to Rockland, Maine. She now splits her time between Key West and Maine.

A Message from Executive Director Jed Dodds
Dear  Friend of The Studios,

As this wild ride of a year comes to a close, I suspect we're all thinking of the gifts we've given, and the ones we've received, the chapter that's closing, and
the one that's about to begin.

At The Studios, we have so much to be grateful for: a sturdy home on a beautiful island,  a community of friends , a tireless pool of volunteers, and a bounty of artistic talent all around us.  All this has been given to us.

In return, we take joy from sustaining a place  where people discover their creative selves, where our community gathers around art and conversation, and from helping artists thrive in their careers.  This Fall, after Irma, we had even more opportunities to give back: housing schoolteachers in our artist cottages, steering artists towards grants, raising money with a sold out benefit concert, and more.

Our fiscal year at The Studios ends in June, so as much as we count on year-end giving, we'll be working for the next six months to meet our goals. However, as you're probably aware, the  changes in the new US tax bill  mean that if you plan to make a gift this season, you're more likely to see a tax benefit if you do so before December 31.  Now is the time to give!

The Studios has come to feel like a fixture in Key West,  but the truth is we're only able to keep going each year thanks to friends like you lifting us up, time and again. As you weigh the things you've been given this holiday season, and where you'll feel good about giving back, I hope you'll consider helping The Studios.  You can join, renew, or give another gift here: tskw.org/support/membership

With so many opportunities on the horizon, 2018 is just about guaranteed to be a great one. No matter how you choose to give back, thank you for being part of The Studios family, and here's to a joyous New Year!

Jed Dodds
Executive Director

Part 2 Continued from Above : Last Stand Meeting 1/16/2018
The Community College is an outstanding resource for high school graduates as well as Florida Keys residents interested in preparing for employment opportunities in ecotourism, diving, marine mammal behavior and training, aquaculture and environmental technology. We're happy to help spread the word about FKCC degrees and life-long learning programs.
"In addition to our courses, FKCC faculty is conducting significant research that is made possible by our unique location. Graduates in the Marine Science program have continued at our partner universities to earn Bachelor's degrees and beyond" said Dr. Rice.
Formed in 1987, this will be the 30 th  Annual Meeting for Last Stand. The board represents Last Stand members by frequently commenting on quality of life impacts and environmental issues at city and county meetings. "We are more effective when we represent a larger group throughout the Florida Keys. Memberships are available at our web site:  www.keyslaststand.org  or you can sign up at the meeting" said Mark Songer, Board President.
Last Stand has been formed to promote, preserve and protect the quality of life in Key West, the Florida Keys and their environs, with a particular emphasis on the natural environment.
For more information, call Mark Songer at 305-394-3807 or visit  www.keyslaststand.org
