Music in the Palm Garden
The Friends of the Key West Library presents "Music in the Palm Garden" featuring roots rock duo, The Kennedys, at 6pm, Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Library's Palm Garden, 700 Fleming St. The duo have been recording and touring together since 1994. Allmusic.com has described their pop-folk sound as "a lush exercise in lyrical prowess and instrumental grace." Free and open to the public. Hometown will present Incumbents seeking re-election, other declared and potential candidates for public office, and those merely testing the waters to determine their electability in the upcoming 2018 elections. On June 22, Hometown will host its
Meet the Candidates event. All candidates qualified to run for office either in the August 28, Primary Election or the November 6, General Election are invited to present their proposals to make this area a better place in which to live, and to improve areas of concern for all citizens. Free and open to the public. The Studios of Key West (tentative).
Hometown will also sponsor a series of Q & A events for all contested Primary and General Election races. Panels of local political pundits will question the candidates.

Mote holds Keys building ribbon cutting, unveils new name
In May, threatened coral reefs gained more powerful allies in the Florida Keys as Mote held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new research facility at Summerland Key, Florida. Mote leaders announced that the new facility is now named the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration (IC2R3). Elizabeth Moore, one of the first lead donors to the facility, dramatically increased her support for the facility in spring 2017.

Florida Keys Wildlife Society launches this year's Monthly Full Moon Kayak excursions
Florida Keys Wildlife Society, the friends group to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, kicks off this season's Full Moon Kayak excursions on Monday, January 29th from 4:00pm - 6:00pm, departing Big Pine Kayak Adventures on Bogey Road on Big Pine Key.
The 2-hour paddle traverses through Big Pine's National Key Deer Refuge, one of four wildlife refuges in the Florida Keys and home to the Refuges' Visitor Center, the Key Deer Bookstore, and the endangered Key deer.
They established the excursions several years ago to encourage people to get outside and enjoy the abundant natural resources of the National Key Deer Refuge.
The January- June 2018 Full Moon Kayak excursions includes kayak, gear, and an experienced guide, with a $25 donation to benefit local wildlife through the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. Dates and times future excursions are as follows: Tuesday, February 27 from 5:00pm-7:00pm; Thursday, March 29 from 6:30pm-8:30pm; Friday, April 27 from 6:30pm-8:30pm; Sunday, May 27 from 6:30pm-8:30 pm; and Tuesday, June 26 from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Elizabeth Devries arrived in Key West in 1980 from Liverpool, England, never having had a hammer in her hand. Her art grew directly from the past 30 years of shutter restorations in Key West. It was in the '90s when she noticed a jigsaw scrap that looked like a book. Her first creation was " The Library", the beginning of her life in art.
"I use only recovered Dade County pine and cypress from old Key West houses for the construction of my boxes. Years and layers of Key West's colorful past lie beneath the surface of the shutters used inside each box, the patinas created by years of rain and sun. Reds are from the shutters of Tennessee William's House; lime green from Hemmingway's house; light blue from Tom McGuane's on Catholic Lane. Key West history is literally a part of my work." The Aquaculture Laboratory at Florida Keys Community College made an exciting discovery. For the first time since Hurricane Irma, one breeding pair of clownfish laid a clutch of eggs. The breeders, a standard wild-type "Nemo" female crossed with a male "Black Ice Snowflake" designer male, have been regular spawners for the past year and a half in the College's facility and have parented many hundreds of young. However, breeding came to a halt after the lab was relocated temporarily after the storm damaged the building where it was housed.
"Finding 'Nemo' eggs was a beautiful way to start the New Year! Even our clownfish have shown remarkable resilience following Irma," said Dr. Michelle "Mick" Walsh, Professor of Marine Science and Technology at FKCC. Many of the fish in the College's Aquaculture Lab survived the storm despite hours without power to their tanks.
"We look forward to the pair's continued contributions to support our Marine Environmental Technology and Tropical Ornamental Mariculture Technician students during the lab-based aquaculture classes this semester."

Carrie Andrews' first Frangipani show will be at Gallery B featuring her digital work and Sandy Sun's new ceramics are ready for the First Friday Art Stroll on Upper Duval. No exhibit of David's popular works would be complete without a nod to our four legged friends, and so he has a series of oils on small canvas panels; simple "drawings" of hounds on nearly Venetian patterns. Most of his compositions have a bit of text in them to inspire a thought or a laugh.
Carrie Andrews has been gettin
g to know the lower Keys since the early 1980's, when her family began spending winters here. She is now living aboard an iconic houseboat in a community of amazing people and painting the places she has adored for decades. Living in a small space means working on small watercolors in a sketchbook and enhancing the images with other media before uploading to a computer for final tweaking. She then sends for prints on fabric, metal and 100% cotton rag paper.
Sandy Sun creates unique ceramic pieces and vessels by hand. Most of her works are inspired by the natural beauty of the Florida Keys. Her new works focus on growth and new life and include ocean themed pieces and pieces that incorporate local tropical leaves and flowers. Often described as organic, Sandy's pottery reflects both the variants and symmetry found in nature.

Enrich your health and lifestyle, advance your personal yoga practice, or simply slow down to create space and calm with Cricket Desmarais at The Studios of Key West on Friday mornings from 9:00am to 10:00am, January 26, February 2, February 9, February 16, and February 23.
The five-week series of classes are a great introduction to those new to yoga or for those looking to deepen their practice. Students will learn to connect with their breath and experience micro-movement, with a slow, steady build towards strength, balance, and flexibility- with an emphasis on safe alignment.
"This gentle but powerful approach to yoga is supportive to any age or stage of life," says instructor Cricket Desmarais, who has been teaching Slow Flow yoga since 2012, including YMCA classes where ages ranged from 19-78 in the same hour. "It gives you the space needed to soften and meet yourself where you are, and helps your inner radar know when you're going too far- or not working to optimal capacity."
Desmarais emphasizes that though the class speed is toned-down, the experience is often quite powerful.
"Slow Flow Yoga offers a nice counterpoint to a culture that is hard-wired to consistently push hard and fast," she says. "It gives us the opportunity to slow down for an hour and really feel ourselves from the inside out. In that space, a lot can be revealed."

Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Distinguished Speaker Series guest Edward England for "From junkyard to National Landmark: Celebrating 50 years of Howard England's Legacy at Fort Zachary Taylor," a free lunchtime lecture held on Tuesday, February 6, at 12:00 p.m. in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum. The lecture presents England's father Howard England's eight-and-a-half year odyssey of exploration and discovery as Curator in Charge at Fort Zachary Taylor.
Edward England's latest book, The Fort Zach Guidebook, is the first written to highlight the history and natural beauty of Key West's unique, internationally-known attraction. Divided into six major sections, it covers every aspect of the park, from the layout and features of the park, to the history and significance of Fort Taylor, to the park's natural attractions, to the park's supporting organizations, and to other historical attractions nearby on the island. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Thanks to a partnership between Key West Art & Historical Society, Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, some 600 area students have the opportunity to explore coastal fortification history through a series of upcoming in-class and field trip activities and events. On Friday, February 2, students will visit Fort Zachary Taylor, the Civil War headquarters of the U.S. Navy's East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron, to participate in Civil War Days, an annual living history event running through February 4 that portrays life at a Federal fortress during the years 1861-1862.

Key West Art & Historical Society invites writers to enter works in this year's Tennessee Williams poetry and short-story contests
Keys poets and writers are invited to submit works for this year's Tennessee Williams poetry and short-story writing contests - components of the annual Key West celebration of the great American writer and island resident's birthday.
Poets are invited to submit a 30-line or less poem about Williams' life in Key West. Writers may submit a short story of 1500 to 4000 words, to include some reference to Williams' life in Key West. Winners will be selected by blind-judging via a panel of professional, published writer/poets, with $200 awarded for first place and $100 for second place in each contest, along with an opportunity to read from their submissions at the March 26 Tennessee Williams Birthday reception, set to take place at the Tennessee Williams Museum, 513 Truman Avenue on Monday, March 26, 6:00pm-8:00pm.
Submission fee is $20 for adults; $10 for students and are limited to one per person. Entries can be submitted via a link at

Birthday Celebration,
a 6-week commemoration of the literary icon who lived on the island for thirty-four years.

The Key West City Commission on Wednesday proclaimed January 20
th
Smart Ride Day.
On Saturday, cyclists from all over the state will undertake a grueling two day, 165 mile trek from Miami to Key West to raise money for seven AIDS service organizations. The annual event raises awareness and results in much needed funding that helps bring vital services to those who need medical care, pharmaceutical assistance, housing and dental care.
"This is a very important event for Florida," said Scott Pridgen, executive director of AIDS Help, Inc. "The Mile Marker Team is made up of 23 riders and 17 crew from Monroe County. This dedicated group of folks is a number one team in Florida. They've raised $100,000 for Monroe County."
The ride, which was postponed due to Hurricane Irma, ends at the Edward B. Knight Pier AIDS memorial. These individuals ride to prove to themselves they cannot be easily taken by the disease and that they cannot -- and will -- not forget those who have passed.
"We're still looking for a cure," said Pridgen. "We're still hoping for a vaccine. One day we'll have it, but today we ride.

The Sheriff's Office held its quarterly Employee Awards ceremony in Marathon. Employees were recognized for their 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service to the agency. Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys is preparing to expand its hurricane recovery response. Through the Habitat Hammers Back initiative, the local affiliate is working closely with Habitat International to assist homeowners in need.
Debbie Swift Batty, Board President stated, "We're in a unique position to assist homeowners in the Lower Keys repair their homes with skilled construction staff and volunteers and we've received many generous donations for hurricane home repairs."
Habitat recovery efforts include repair of damaged homes by replacing drywall, rebuilding stairs, decking and fences as well as preforming other construction tasks as needed.
Interviews are currently being conducted to hire site supervisors, construction managers and intake coordinators with the intent on being fully staffed and ready to begin continuous work to help families rebuild their lives by the beginning of February.
"We're eager to begin helping our neighbors make their homes a safe a decent place to live", said Swift Batty.
To qualify for the program individuals must own their home as their primary residence, the family must fall at or below Area Median Income (AMI) guidelines, and be ready and willing to help work on their homes alongside Habitat staff and volunteers. Due to generous support from donors, homeowner payments will be for materials only, and structured on a sliding scale according to homeowner income. The labor will be donated to the homeowners.
Key West and Lower Keys Habitat for Humanity believes that every man, woman and child deserves a decent, safe and affordable place to live.
Applications will be available beginning February 1.
