We are currently prepping for the inaugural launch of the Key West Photography Festival! This juried competition + 4-day festival (Feb 8th-11th, 2018) will be located in beautiful Mallory Square in Key West, Florida, with a focus on contemporary photography. We will have rotating exhibits, panels, workshops, celebrity guests and much more! We are looking for sponsors, interns, volunteers and photographers. All candidates qualified to run for office either in the August 28, Primary Election or the November 6, General Election are invited to present their proposals to make this area a better place in which to live, and to improve areas of concern for all citizens. Hometown will also sponsor a series of Q & A events for all contested Primary and General Election races. Panels of local political pundits will question the candidates.

The three-tiered event begins with a Hog's Breath Saloon parking lot party at noon, parades down Duval at 2:00pm, and culminates with a Jazz Jam tribute at The Green Parrot from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
The Hog's Breath Saloon party at noon will be emceed by Bahama Village Music Program Board President Larry Baeder, featuring music, a Bloody Mary bar sponsored by Bombora Vodka and Hog's Breath, a raffle, and parade paraphernalia merchandise for sale. Photo placards for donor participants will be available for pick up and a group photo is set for 1:15pm.
Grand Marshall Jim Robinson, Funeral Band leader Skipper Krippitz, and some of the island's best musicians will rally the Second Line for a 2:00pm parade down Duval Street, arriving at the Green Parrot at approximately 3:00pm. Musician Mick Kilgos will read the names of this year's honorees during a performance by the Bahama Village Music Program Joyful Voices Choir. This moving tribute is not to be missed, and the Jazz Jam led by the incomparable Bill Blue follows until 6pm.

April 20, 2017, marked the seventh anniversary of the
Deepwater Horizon
oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The initial explosion killed 11 workers, triggering a cascading series of equipment failures leading to the largest oil spill in U.S. history, spilling 210 million gallons of oil over 87 days.
Since the spill, the C-IMAGE consortium centered at the University of South Florida-College of Marine Science, funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), and including scientists from Mote Marine Laboratory and institutions around the world, has expanded the understanding of oil spills. C-IMAGE partners are studying the impacts on an ecosystem after an oil spill, revealing the behavior of oil under high-pressure, and predicting the health and reproduction of fish after large spills.

On the subtropical island that has nurtured creative spirits dating back to John James Audubon, aficionados of artistry can discover offerings by more than 80 national and regional exhibitors Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27-28.
The Key West Craft Show, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, is to transform the island's historic lower Whitehead Street into a lively open-air marketplace. Now in its 33rd year, the event is presented by the Key West Art Center, a nonprofit cooperative organization for local artists established in 1960.
Artisan booths are to stand beneath Whitehead Street's canopy of trees, adjacent to attractions and museums including the Audubon House and Tropical Gardens. The gracious property recalls the famed naturalist and artist's early 1830s sojourn in Key West.
Show participants also are to offer their artistry just inside the Whitehead and Caroline streets entrance to Truman Annex, named for the former U.S. president who spent numerous working vacations in the island city.
Attendees can choose from glass and fabric pieces, jewelry, pottery, woodcrafts and more. Some items traditionally are inspired by or are unique to Key West.
Participants are selected according to a rigorous juried process, and all craft offerings must be original and handmade by the exhibitor. Many return year after year to display their works while enjoying Key West's typically balmy January weather.
The show has grown from a local gathering to a nationally recognized event that attracts some 25,000 attendees each year. Organizers' commitment to quality has earned it widespread critical acclaim including a consistent spot on Sunshine Artist Magazine's roster of leading American shows.
The craft show is free to attend. Proceeds support the Key West Art Center's programs and help maintain the historic 301 Front St. building that houses its gallery. Written by The Blue Paper.

FKCC to Hold Active Assailant Training Exercise
Florida Keys Community College will hold an Active Assailant Training Exercise on the Key West Campus on the morning of Tuesday, January 23. The Active Assailant Training Exercise will be a full-scale simulation and has been planned with support from security consulting firm, VERITAS. The exercise will engage FKCC students and employees, as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement and emergency medical services to test the respective agencies' policies, plans and procedures to respond to an active shooter incident.
"While FKCC's campus is safe and monitored by 24/7 security, recent tragedies-many occurring on college campuses-show us that we must be prepared for the unthinkable," said Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, FKCC President. "This exercise will provide invaluable practice that could save lives should we ever see such an event."
The College will be open for business as normal and all classes will be held as scheduled on January 23. The exercise may impact traffic on south Stock Island between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Those on campus during the exercise are expected to participate. The College has held numerous active assailant trainings with students and employees and has added resources on its website and social media accounts.

Jill Caldwell was born in Quincy, Massachusetts. She received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 1997. After graduation she promptly moved to Key West, an island she had fallen in love with as a child. "I knew this magical island with its bold vivid colors, gorgeous sunlight, and translucent ocean was a place I needed to call home," she says. While living here, she met her future husband and, on a whim in 2005, they left Key West and moved to Rockland, Maine. She now splits her time between Key West and Maine.

The Board of Directors of the Anne McKee Artists Fund, Inc. announces the date of Friday, February 9, 2018 for their annual fine art auction. The auction will again take place at The Studios of Key West. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the auction, led by Tom Luna, will begin at 8:00 p.m. Champagne and desserts will be included in the $25 ticket price and there will also be a cash bar. Slow down and tune in with yoga at The Studios of Key West taught by Cricket Desmarais
Enrich your health and lifestyle, advance your personal yoga practice, or simply slow down to create space and calm with Cricket Desmarais at The Studios of Key West on Friday mornings from 9:00am to 10:00am, January 26, February 2, February 9, February 16, and February 23.
The five-week series of classes are a great introduction to those new to yoga or for those looking to deepen their practice. Students will learn to connect with their breath and experience micro-movement, with a slow, steady build towards strength, balance, and flexibility- with an emphasis on safe alignment.
"This gentle but powerful approach to yoga is supportive to any age or stage of life," says instructor Cricket Desmarais, who has been teaching Slow Flow yoga since 2012, including YMCA classes where ages ranged from 19-78 in the same hour. "It gives you the space needed to soften and meet yourself where you are, and helps your inner radar know when you're going too far- or not working to optimal capacity."
Desmarais emphasizes that though the class speed is toned-down, the experience is often quite powerful.
"Slow Flow Yoga offers a nice counterpoint to a culture that is hard-wired to consistently push hard and fast," she says. "It gives us the opportunity to slow down for an hour and really feel ourselves from the inside out. In that space, a lot can be revealed."

Birthday Celebration,
a 6-week commemoration of the literary icon who lived on the island for thirty-four years.

To support area families with young children in exploring the wealth of learning opportunities provided by the island's museums, Key West Art & Historical Society has partnered with other area museums to present an expanded new season of "Museums & Me" early childhood education sessions, led by early childhood educator Natalie Robinson.

The Skinny Dippers are a couple of loons, who believe in the magic of music, who believe that music is meant to be enjoyed for the way it can move the hearts, spirits, and thoughts of those who hear it - not just sell drinks and food. The fun they have performing transfers to the audience, and a good time is had by all. Unusual instrumentation including mandolin, ukulele, and dulcimer, even conch, kazoo, tambourine, and xylophone, provides settings for their soprano and baritone voices. This presents a refreshing change from convention right from the start.
Swing, folk, country, rock, and pop blend, forming a seamless foray into fine fun music. Mandolin and ukulele, xylophone and other percussion, create a lovely, lively, lilting platform for musical mirth. What began as a brief foray into uncharted waters has evolved into an odyssey with no end in sight. Each time The Skinny Dippers set up to entertain it's a three-hour tour of unparalleled delight.

The Key West City Commission last night proclaimed Key West High School Football Team Day during the first commission meeting of the new year to honor the team's tenacity in reaching the playoffs as well as their outstanding effort to help those most hard hit by Hurricane Irma.
This season, the Key West High School Fighting Conchs Football Team earned a place in the Florida High School Athletic Association Playoffs for this first time since 2004.
"This journey to the playoffs was earned by a storm-tossed team demonstrating the Conch characteristics of determination, courage and resiliency," reads the proclamation. "After Hurricane Irma, members of the Key West football team pitched in to help with local clean-up and recovery, raising spirits and bringing hope to hard-hit communities in the Lower Keys."
"What went from a season that wasn't going to happen," said Head Coach John Hughes, "turned out to be a pretty special season -- not only for what we did on the field, but what we were able to do as a team, the brotherhood they developed, to be able to go out there and help the community in their time of need, I think did something good for everyone involved. I'm proud of what they did and who they became because of that."
The Commission stated in the proclamation, "the City of Key West is proud of the many victories of the Key West High School Football Team, and recognize that sports programs are an integral part of developing character in the youth who will inherit our city."

Palm Beach group honored for murder prosecution
Sheriff Rick Ramsay and retired Major Crimes Detective Vince Weiner presented this group of investigators and prosecutors from Palm Beach County with plaques recognizing their hard work on a double homicide which took place in the upper Keys. The case was assigned to Palm Beach County when there was a potential conflict in the local office of the State Attorney.
