This time of year, as we celebrate New York Fashion Week, there will be thousands upon thousands of designs that will cross many runways. The most important detail to remember in this time is that it is not a piece of clothing that makes an individual look beautiful, rather the individual that makes a piece of clothing come to life.
OMG! Did you see that? I LOVE that look.
Just a few more positive affirmations to add to your list- but seriously, when is the last time you saw a photograph of yourself and had one of these very thoughts? So often, we focus on the negative things people have told us about our appearance. We fail to see the beauty in ourselves because of the unreasonable standards and expectations of society, and this should not be.
Love Yourself and who you are today. After all, isn't that all we have? Photo by Lucille Khornak.

So maybe you put on (or lost) a few pounds since your last shoot, or you haven't exactly been keeping up with your New Year's skincare routine. Maybe you have a face full of freckles, a large nose, or unique bone structure. Whatever the case may be, it's important that you embrace it because that's what makes you different, and that's what makes you YOU.
This time of year, as we celebrate New York Fashion Week, there will be thousands upon thousands of designs that will cross many runways. The most important detail to remember in this time is that it is not a piece of clothing that makes an individual look beautiful, rather the individual that makes a piece of clothing come to life. This year, I have had the honour of working with the leaders of the Mélange Movement as they produce their first ever NYC fashion show, and I think what they are trying to do is just wonderful. Check them out here.

Cricket Desmarais sends regards and tell us : What's in a name?
Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge Friends group changes moniker as 21-year commitment to wildlife continues
The Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge Friends group has recently changed their moniker, but their commitment to local wildlife
stewardship through science and education
pervades.
Formerly known as FAVOR, Friends and Volunteers of Refuges, Florida Keys Wildlife Society organized as part of a nationwide effort to develop Friends groups for National Wildlife Refuges in 1997, forging a wildlife ambassadorship for the
over 400,000 acres of wildlife that make up the subtropical Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges. Since then, they've helped make certain that Crocodile Lake NWR, National Key Deer Refuge, Great White Heron NWR and Key West NWR-home to some of the world's most endangered habitats, plants, and wildlife species-retain their status as some of the most beautiful and unique natural resources in the world.
"The Society is a critical link in helping us conserve and protect the wildlife and habitats of our refuges," says Ranger Kristie Killam. "They help communicate the issues to our visitors and residents, and they provide a call to action on numerous issues that include the importance of trash cleanups, building wildlife habitat, responsible pet ownership, ethical wildlife viewing, and sustainable living."

Any of my clients will tell you, I am forever working to ensure they look their best in their photos. That's because as a professional, I know the difference between industry-standard quick retouching that can leave you looking fake, and high quality no-compromise retouching that is for real life people and families who desire photos that reflect the truth of who they are. One of my favourite things to do for a client is a personal fashion book- yes that's a thing! Comfortable and stylish looks that compliment their features make it easier to bring out the best emotional response for a truthful reflection of who they are.
Well we certainly are clearing up many of the Past Pushed Back Features (due to Time and space Constraints) with just a few more to go :
That will be Pushed back to March 12 or 19 : Part 1 of our Tour of The Guild Hall Gallery, Part 4 Our Tour of the Key West Art Center, Our Photo Feature of the Peter Max Exhibition recently at the Key West Gallery, Liza Jane Catana's Recent Appearance in KW. Of Course also in the March 12th. Issue events we covered last week and Event Notices from our Contributing Editors for Upcoming Events.

At 4 pm on Friday, March 9th the Key West Art Center kicks off a Plein Air tradition ten years in the making with a demonstration by John Clayton. Based in Provincetown
John Clayton is an energetic painter who shares his passion for color as it is revealed in the ever changing light key of nature.
"I'm not so much interested in making a picture as an image of a particular place, a recognized person or object. I'm studying the color and allowing nature to reveal her beauty on that specific day, and am committed to returning to the same location until I have created an expression of the scene in an artistic expression.
" Linger after the demo to enjoy light refreshments, speak with the artist, and pre-register for Plein Air Key West. Artists of ALL levels are encouraged to participate. Here is a few of John's Works

All participants must get their canvases stamped during morning registration before heading out to paint at the location of their choice. Artwork must be returned to the Art Center by no later than 1:30 that afternoon, so that it may be judged by John Clayton himself. Friends, family, strangers, and artists alike are invited to enjoy a refreshing array of treats at the Happy Hour Show & Sale from 5 to 7 pm. Come share in the excitement as the winners are announced and CASH PRIZES awarded at 6:15 pm. All Plein Air paintings created that day will be on display and available for purchase.
Grab an easel and join in the creative fun for a delightful touch of color this March. The participation fee for Plein Air Key West is $30 for Art Center Members, $35 for non-members. Hometown's! Call for Candidates.
The
Best
of Local 2018 Elections!
KEY WEST, FL: On
Monday, April 16
, 2018, Hometown! will be hosting their annual
Call for Candidates
event at Salute on the Beach starting at 5 pm.
At this event, incumbents seeking reelection, other declared and potential candidates, as well as those merely testing the waters to determine their electability in the upcoming 2018 elections will introduce themselves and present why they are interested in public service and why they should be your candidate of choice.
Admission is free - there will be light hors d'oeuvres and cash bar.
"Workshop for Winning Campaigns"
So You're Thinking About Running: A Workshop for Winning Campaigns
,
" Hometown's first campaign event of the 2018 election cycle held at the Marriott Beachside on Saturday, February 10, was a huge success!
The thirty-seven (37) candidates, potential candidates, incumbents and campaign managers heard experienced political pundits, media experts and public office holders opine on local campaign strategy, budget issues, fundraising and effective communications for upcoming election forums, Q&A debates, and door-to-door canvassing.
Hometown believes that better prepared candidates lead to more effective and informed elected representatives supporting both the community's and Hometown's mission of Good Government.
According to the evaluations, the best part of the workshop was the variety and expertise of the presenters. We couldn't agree more and would like to thank Monroe County Clerk Kevin Madok, Key West City Commissioner Sam Kaufman, Monroe County School Board Chair Bobby Highsmith, Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers, Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin; local businessmen Bryan Green, Ed Swift, John Dolan-Heitlinger and Clinton Barras of Two Oceans Digital; as well as Bill Becker, News Director of U.S. 1 Radio 104.1, and Gwen Filosa of the Keynoter.

Florida Keys Community College's student ceramics club, Mud-Pi, invites the community to its annual fund-raising event on Sunday, March 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Studios of Key West at 533 Eaton Street. As per tradition, attendees will select their own student-crafted ceramic bowl to keep as a commemorative souvenir. Admission is $25; cash or checks only will be accepted at the entrance.
The funds raised will be used to purchase materials and equipment that allow Mud-Pi to continue to beautify and enrich the community. For more than 20 years, the students of Mud-Pi have created dozens of ornate ceramic wall murals and fountains that grace many locations in the Keys and provide the College's Key West Campus its signature aesthetic. The department also hosts young students, elementary through high school grades, as well as special needs groups to introduce them to the fine art of pottery.

The transformation of our community has been impressive in the months since Irma paid a visit. With few exceptions, businesses have repaired, revamped and are re-energized for the season. The profusion of refreshed floral and greenery does not disappoint. Even more noteworthy is the spirit of the community, pulling together to preserve and promote what makes the Keys so special. Next month, Debra Butler Design Studio continues a series of events to highlight an aspect of Key's life that will be of interest to you. Author and Key West resident, Carrie Jo Howe will be our guest on Thursday, March 22nd for a book signing and launch of her newly published book, "Island Life Sentence." Stop in to congratulate Carrie Jo and see all that's new in the Studio. Isn't it great to be home? 305-393-2942; Click above link for the Complete E-Newsletter from Debra.

Run with the Deer March 17 with The Florida Keys Wildlife Society
Race to save what's endangered: Florida Keys Wildlife Society seeks registrants for annual Run with Deer 5K run/walk
Runners are invited to register for the fourth annual Run with Deer 5K run/walk, a race that wanders through rural roads within National Key Deer Refuge on Saturday, March 17. Race proceeds will benefit Florida Keys Wildlife Society (formerly known as FAVOR) and used to help support exhibit purchases for the new Nature Center, refuge habitat restoration, education and outreach, and many other Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges projects that help protect endangered wildlife.
"The Run with Deer 5K race course is a fun route and a great way for people to get out in nature, get a little exercise, and contribute to the National Wildlife Refuges!" says Nancy Chatelaine, Florida Keys Wildlife Society member and race coordinator.
Co-hosted by Key West Southernmost Runners, the race is part of the Florida Keys Wildlife Refuges' Outdoor Fest, a week-long celebration of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge system that encourages people to get outside in a wildlife-friendly manner. The Saturday, March 10 through Saturday, March 17 Fest spans the four national wildlife refuges and features family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities, including Saturday's 8am race, followed by an awards ceremony and a family-friendly Outdoor & Wildlife Fair from 9am-2pm, featuring
music, food, and lots of hands-on projects for kids.
Registration is $25 for ages 14 and up, $15 for 13 and under. Children under 5 are free with a parent. Register early to save $5 and receive a race T-shirt: visit
floridakeyswildlifesociety.org/run-with-deer-registration or pick up a registration form at the National Key Deer Refuge Nature Center on Big Pine Key. Race day registration is at the new Nature Center located at
30587 Overseas Hwy at 7:00am.
For more information about the race, the refuges, volunteer opportunities, and the list of Outdoor Fest events, visit

(Bottom L) T
he celebration of Women's History Month continues with Key West Art & Historical Society's Distinguished Speaker Series guest Leslie Kemp Poole on Thursday, March 15, 6:00pm at Old City Hall, 510 Greene Street. The historian and writer's presentation
"Saving Florida: Women's Fight for the Environment in the Twentieth Century"
will reveal Florida's environmental movement led by women who fought to sustain the Sunshine state's unique natural resources.
Sparked by uncontrollable pollution, pesticides, and dredge-and-fill projects, women's clubs across the state prompted legislation to establish Florida's first state park, which later became the core of Everglades National Park in 1916. The fourth-generation Floridian will share the stories of women who stood strong to lead the fight to save the state's important natural resources before they even had a right to vote-Doris Leeper, who convinced her community and the federal government to protect a 24-mile beach that is now Canaveral National Seashore, Clara Dommerich, who organized the first meeting of the Florida Audubon Society in her living room in 1900, and the towering environmental legacy of the three "Marjories:" author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, scientist/activist Marjorie Harris Carr, and journalist/activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas. As a collective force, they forever altered how others saw women's roles in society, and set the foundation for this century's environmental agenda, including sustainable development. Tickets available at kwahs.org/education/distinguished_speaker_

ses; $5 for KWAHS members, $10 for non-members-advanced ticket purchase is recommended. Sponsored in part of the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the Helmerich Trust. For more information, contact Adele Williams , Director of Education, at 305.295.6616, x115.

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
- Reviewed that 1% of construction and renovation costs is required to be contributed for Art In Public Places under current city ordinances. This applies to those projects requiring a Major Development Plan where construction costs are greater than $500,000 and renovation costs greater than $100,000. In the Historic District this would infer five or more permanent or transient residential units, or 2500 sq. ft. of nonresidential floor area, or commercial land use of equal to or greater than 2500 sq. ft. In the Non-Historic District this would be permanent residential and transient residential of 11 or more units, nonresidential floor area of equal to or greater than 5000 sq.ft., or greater than 5000 sq. ft. for commercial land use
