Martha Graham's Dance of Life, the pinnacle of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra's 20th Anniversary Season led by Founder|Music Director Sebrina Maria Alfonso . This enthralling evening features an historic collaboration between the world class Symphony and the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company, America's oldest dance company presenting some of the world's leading dancers. Martha Graham is widely recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th. Century, along with Picasso, James Joyce, Igor Stravinsky, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Time magazine named her "Dancer of the Century" and People magazine tagged her among the female "icons of the Century." According to Janet Wilber, Company Artistic Director and former Principal Dancer, "Martha was a revolutionary who created a new and very American style of dancing." Wilber danced many of Graham's greatest roles including roles created for her by Graham. Since 2005, she has been teaching, lecturing, and directing Graham ballets internationally. Denise Vale, Senior Artistic Associate, joined the Company in 1985 and also attained Principal Dancer rank. During its 90-year history, the Company has received audience and critical acclaim in over 50 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Russia, and the Middle East.

We are currently prepping for the inaugural launch of the Key West Photography Festival! This juried competition + 4-day festival (Feb 8th-11th, 2018) will be located in beautiful Mallory Square in Key West, Florida, with a focus on contemporary photography. We will have rotating exhibits, panels, workshops, celebrity guests and much more! We are looking for sponsors, interns, volunteers and photographers. We are taking submissions. It will be free of charge and 2 (of your best!) photos can be submitted. It will be a general entry for local and non-local photographers. Hometown will present Incumbents seeking re-election, other declared and potential candidates for public office, and those merely testing the waters to determine their electability in the upcoming 2018 elections. On June 22, Hometown will host its
Meet the Candidates event. All candidates qualified to run for office either in the August 28, Primary Election or the November 6, General Election are invited to present their proposals to make this area a better place in which to live, and to improve areas of concern for all citizens. Free and open to the public. The Studios of Key West (tentative).
Hometown will also sponsor a series of Q & A events for all contested Primary and General Election races. Panels of local political pundits will question the candidates.

Impromptu's 2018 Rising Star Jacob MacKay, a talented young cellist from New Hampshire,
will visit Key West for an Impromptu Concert performance at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 401 Duval St.
The concert will be the second of Impromptu's 2018 season, celebrating the centennial of Leonard Bernstein, a frequent visitor to Key West.
MacKay has performed both as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Recently he participated in music festivals in Israel, the Festivale Internationale de Musique de Chambre in France, and numerous New Hampshire-based festivals, including the Monadnock Music and Electric Earth Concerts

In April, scientists announced that massive seagrass beds in Western Australia's Shark Bay - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - had not recovered much from the devastating heat wave of 2011, according to their new study demonstrating how certain vital ecosystems may change drastically in a warming climate. New manatee book by Mote scientist.
With manatees' reclassification from "endangered" to "threatened" under the U.S. Endangered Species Act announced March 30, people of all ages have expressed renewed curiosity about the future of these gentle giants.
In April Mote announced the new book "Florida Manatees: Biology, Behavior, and Conservation" by Mote Senior Scientist Dr. John Reynolds. The book provides an updated look into the lives of these iconic marine mammals and the conservation challenges they face, illustrated with gorgeous color photographs by Wayne Lynch.

Thirty-four sharks were tagged along Florida's Gulf Coast for studies designed to benefit their populations during a successful research cruise conducted April 17-21 by five scientists, two graduate and 40 undergraduate students from New College of Florida, Eckerd College, Mote and The Nature Conservancy (TNC).

$10 suggested donation at the door. All funds raised from this event goes to Zonta's program providing mammograms for un-insured and under-insured women in the Florida Keys.

The Florida Keys Community College Education Foundation invites the community to the Seaside Soiree on Thursday, February 1, at 6 p.m. at the Islander Resort located at 82100 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. The evening begins with an oceanfront cocktail reception and silent auction followed by an exquisite Keys cuisine dinner, collaboratively created by Marker 88 Restaurant and the Islander Resort. The party continues with dancing and a live auction of a variety of unique and spectacular items. The sixth annual event raises funds for the students and academic endeavors of the College.
"This is an especially exciting time for FKCC. A new stand-alone FKCC Upper Keys Center is closer than ever to launch. We are also building more bachelor's degrees and pursuing a name change to the 'College of the Florida Keys,'" said Dr. Frank Wood, FKCC Vice President of Advancement. Jill Caldwell was born in Quincy, Massachusetts. She received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 1997. After graduation she promptly moved to Key West, an island she had fallen in love with as a child. "I knew this magical island with its bold vivid colors, gorgeous sunlight, and translucent ocean was a place I needed to call home," she says. While living here, she met her future husband and, on a whim in 2005, they left Key West and moved to Rockland, Maine. She now splits her time between Key West and Maine.

HISTORIC WALKING TOURS BY SHARON WELLS
For history buffs or anyone seeking insight into the classic architecture of Key West, Key West Art & Historical Society will host a series of educational and entertaining walking tours led by local artist and historian Sharon Wells on select Saturdays from January through March. The first is to take place on Saturday, January 13 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, with a focus on Truman Annex and Historic Whitehead Street.

1/24 CONCH REVIVAL PICNIC AT KEY WEST LIGHTHOUSE & KEEPER'S QUARTERS
(R) The Key West Art & Historical Society and Isle Cook Key West once again join forces to present the "Conch Revival Picnic"- a picnic-style Conch heritage dinner and co-benefit for Grimal Grove prepared by acclaimed chefs Martha Hubbard and Dave Furman on Wednesday, January 24 on the grounds of the Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters. This year's Conch Revival Picnic - the third so far - begins with a wine and appetizer pairing and music by Chilean guitarist Rolando Rojas from 5:00pm-6:00pm, followed by a 6:00-8:00pm dinner of classic Key West/Conch recipes featuring produce grown at Grimal Grove, the
historic two-acre Big Pine tropical fruit park dedicated to the local food movement.

On Thursday, January 18, Key West Art & Historical Society members and those with an interest in supporting Key West's arts and history are invited to enjoy complimentary libations and refreshments, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the Tennessee Williams Museum, 513 Truman Avenue.
The museum, formerly the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit, recently merged with The Society,
making the exhibit The Society's fourth museum and uniting the two organizations and their growing memberships of passionate Key West arts and history supporters. The evening will offer both established and new members an opportunity to mingle while exploring the world's largest collection of Pulitzer prize-winning writer Tennessee Williams' memorabilia and literary artifacts that is available to the public.

at the home of exhibit founders Dennis Beaver and Bert Whitt, the festival continues into April and boasts a full roster of writing and painting contests, film and poetry forums, curator tours of the Tennessee Williams Museum at 513 Truman Avenue, a March 26

birthday party for the playwright, and 2 one-act theatre productions of the Pulitzer-Prize-winner's work.

Key West Art & Historical Society partners with area museums for expanded "Museums & Me" children's program.
To support area families with young children in exploring the wealth of learning opportunities provided by the island's museums, Key West Art & Historical Society has partnered with other area museums to present an expanded new season of "Museums & Me" early childhood education sessions, led by early childhood educator Natalie Robinson.
Upcoming "Museums & Me" dates and locations are: January 20, Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum, 111 Front Street; February 3, Key West Lighthouse & Keepers Quarters, 938 Whitehead Street; February 17, West Martello Tower, 1100 Atlantic Blvd.; March 3, Key West Lighthouse & Keepers Quarters; March 17, Fort East Martello Museum, 3501 S. City Manager Jim Scholl and the City Commission presented plaques to the winning entries in this year's Holiday Parade.
- 1st place: Key West Conchettes
- 2nd place: Unity of the Keys Spiritual Center
- 3rd place: Florida Keys Outreach Coalition
- Honorable Mention: Key West Sports Academy
"It doesn't work without all the community support," said Scholl. "It was the best parade I've seen since I've been here, so thank you all."
In addition to the hundreds of people who volunteered their time to participate in building and supporting the floats, City officials particularly want to thank Joe Mather, Nancy D'Amato and Lenny Whitley for their tireless and continuous help each year.
Gratitude also to the city employees who volunteered their time to make this another memorable parade.

Becky Herrin Sends Regards and Tells Us : Couple charged with illegal shrimp sale.
Facebook posts offering shrimp for sale led to charges against a Key West couple for selling shrimp without a license Saturday.
Deputy Seth Hopp saw the Facebook posts offering five pound bags of shrimp for $40. The Facebook accounts belonged to 41 year old Iliecer Noa and his wife, 37 year old Carolina Aviles, both of Key West. Deputy Hopp checked with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to see if either person had the proper license to sell saltwater products. Neither one had any commercial fishing licenses.
Deputy Hopp went to their residence on North Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West and confronted them. The couple said they bought a 70 pound bag of shrimp for $80 from a guy riding a bicycle on Stock Island. They made a total of $300 selling the shrimp. They said they had planned to return to Stock Island and buy more so they could keep selling shrimp.
Deputy Hopp issued both Noa and Aviles citations for having no saltwater dealer license and failing to keep required records when selling saltwater products.
