Tibetan Monks to Arrive in Key West featuring week-long celebration of culture and Buddhist teachings.
On Sunday, January 19 through Saturday, January 25, 2020, sponsor Tara Mandala Key West meditation group and host St. Paul's Episcopal Church invite the public to help celebrate the "2020 Sacred Arts Tour" at the church's 401 Duval Street location on the corner of Eaton Street. The seven-day Tibetan festival will be led by eight visiting Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery-students of H.H. Dalai Lama- and includes noontime dharma talks, a Tibetan Marketplace,
classes in the Tibetan Arts, varying music and dance demonstrations of Tibetan culture,
a
nd morning and afternoon blessings for the monk's week-long creation of a Medicine Buddha sand mandala for world healing, which will conclude with a procession down Simonton Street to the bayside ocean for a closing ceremony.
The tour aims to spread the message of peace, loving kindness, wisdom, and compassion while sharing their traditional Tibetan arts and culture, and to raise support for their monastery in south India, where their traditions and culture are preserved.

Author Talk - Mark Powell
Acclaimed novelist Mark Powell will talk about his new literary thriller, "Firebird," at the Key West Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6:00 PM. This free event is open to the public and books will be available for purchase. For more information contact the library at 305-292-3595. The library is located at 700 Fleming St.
Mark Powell has been called the "best Appalachian novelist of his generation" by Ron Rash, and a writer "on the verge of greatness" by Pat Conroy. He is the author of six novels, including "Small Treasons" (Simon & Schuster, 2017), and "The Sheltering" (Story River, 2014). Powell has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Breadloaf and Sewanee Writers' Conferences, and in 2014 was a Fulbright Fellow to Slovakia. He holds degrees from Yale Divinity School, the University of South Carolina, and the Citadel. He lives in the mountains of North Carolina where he teaches at Appalachian State University.

A giant illuminated Key West rooster guides a U.S. Coast Guard response boat piloted by Santa Claus into the Key West Historic Seaport harbor on Saturday night during the 29th annual Schooner Wharf Bar Lighted Boat Parade. The festively illuminated event is one of many that take place during Key West Holiday Fest, an island-wide celebration presented in part by the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council that continues through New Year's Eve. Hometown's Winning Elections Campaign Workshop
Hometown! -- Key West's and Monroe County's signature resource for candidate and election information is hosting a workshop for those running, considering a run or who are interested in campaign leadership in the 2020 election.
The half-day workshop will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel, 3841 North Roosevelt Blvd., Key West, FL.
The program begins at 8:45 am and will offer a full schedule of campaign topics, including budget and fundraising tips, messaging, speeches & debates, marketing and election paperwork.
Speakers will include elected officials from Key West and Monroe County as well as other experienced political and campaign veterans.

Stock Island Arts District Second Saturday Art Strolls January 11
The I Love Stock Island Initiative, along with the artists, makers and craftsmen who call Stock Island home, have teamed up to create the new Stock Island Arts District. The area encompasses Collections Key West at Safe Harbor Marina, The Art Shack at 6404 Front Street, The Shops at the Perry Hotel including the Green Pineapple at 7001 Shrimp Road, Stock Yard Studios and SoulHouse at 5700 4th Ave., The Studios at Stock Island Marina Village at 7005 Shrimp Road and Washed Up Studios in their new location at 6475 2nd Street. Each spot offers a variety of eclectic shops and working studios with multiple artists and disciplines from sculptures to woodworking, mosaics to screen printing, soaps to fabric art along with several retail and gallery buying opportunities. There's a few stand-alone studios that will be open for viewing, as well, including Yodanis Studios at 6310 2nd Street.
Guests are invited to 'stroll' at their leisure to the studios, many within walking distance of each other, every Second Saturday of the month through April. Some artists will offer drawings for great prizes and delicious food & beverages. It's free to attend and free to park. Guests can look for the bright pink 'Arts District' banners flying proud at each location and follow the route on the mobile map accessible at

United Way of the Florida Keys is seeking volunteers to assist with a free tax preparation program for households with limited incomes in Monroe County. Volunteers are needed to work as IRS-certified tax prep assistants or greeters. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed as tax prep assistants, greeters or translators. Volunteer training takes place on January 10 in Key West or January 11 in Marathon.
Through this program, volunteers help qualified Keys residents maximize their tax return so they are better able to provide for their families, thereby making our community more affordable. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn, grow and serve.

The College of the Florida Keys will open its 2020 VIP Series with "Florida's Female Pioneers." The presentation, led by historian, author, and educator, Dr. Peggy Macdonald, is on Thursday, January 9 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus. In its seventh season, the College's VIP Series invites the community to learn from the Visions, Ideas, and Perspectives of speakers of local, regional, and national prominence. The 2020 season, sponsored by Centennial Bank, includes presentations that focus on timely and relevant topics.
In her talk, Dr. Macdonald examines some of the women who have shaped the Sunshine State, including: Dr. Esther Hill Hawks, a physician who ran the first racially integrated free school in Florida; Harriet Beecher Stowe, famous for writing
Uncle Tom's Cabin
who kick-started Florida's tourism industry with her 1873 book
Palmetto Leaves
; and May Mann Jennings, a suffragist and conservationist who helped establish Royal Palm State Park, which formed the nucleus of Everglades National Park.
Dr. Macdonald is a public historian and adjunct professor at Stetson University and Indian River State College. A native Floridian, she gives presentations on Florida women's history with the Florida Humanities Florida Talks program. Her publications include a biography of environmental activist Marjorie Harris Carr and a forthcoming book on Florida's female pioneers. Dr. Macdonald has written about local and Florida history and culture for Gainesville Magazine, Our Town Magazine, Senior Times and FORUM Magazine. She serves on the Alachua County Historical Commission and is an alumna of the University of Florida, where she received a Ph.D. in American History. Dr. Macdonald served as Executive Director of the Matheson History Museum from 2015 to 2019.

Dennis Hyland and Wayne LaRue Smith, co-proprietors of the Little Room Jazz Club on Duval Street welcome Fringe Theater Artistic Director Rebecca Tomlinson to Fringe's season premier of 'An Evening Lost with Lillian Baxter' at the club.
Pianist Jay Schwandt provided the music for 'An Evening Lost with Lillian Baxter' at the Little Room Jazz Club. This is the third rendition of the Lillian Baxter saga.
Fringe Theater's Su Nubia runs the Little Room Jazz Club light board during the presentation 'An Evening Lost with Lillian Baxter." Fringe recently acquired its own lighting equipment and its members are learning about theatrical lighting with lessons at the Tennessee Williams Theatre.

The Key West Art Center and Gallery Celebrates 60!
The Key West Art Center is currently housed in a historic wooden building in the midst of the city's old town waterfront area. It has been here since 1960 when a group of local artists was joined by several businessmen and persuaded city officials to save the historic building on Front Street which had been condemned. It was converted into a city sponsored art center. The building was originally constructed in the 1850s for use as a grocery store and was seriously damaged by fire in 1886. It was rebuilt as a single story building and the second story added in the early 1900s. The grocery was owned and managed by the George Babcock family for many years. In later years the building was the location for the first WPA Art Project under president Roosevelt.
From 1960 on the Key West Art Center and Gallery has had a mission, to provide a year-round sales resource for local artists. It provides a community gathering place, learning environment and public exhibit space. The Art Center is focused on safeguarding the heritage of Key West as a city of Artists. It is the oldest Gallery in Key West and over the years has hung work by hundreds of local artists, many of whom have gone on to become internationally recognized. Members are all Monroe County residents and include artists from Key Largo to Key West. Work includes painting in many mediums, sculpture, ceramics, fine jewelry and other fine craft.

Anniversary of the Art Center, there will be a fundraising fiesta on January 15

, 2020. The Art Center relies in part on donations to expand its reach and the programs it can offer to the community as well as to maintain its historic home. The fundraiser will be held at the Center where you can learn more about the building and the history of this important organization. Delightful hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Small Chef at Large, wine by The Restaurant Store, Live Music by Brian Roberts and there will be a silent auction. Tickets are $60.00 and available at The Key West Art Center and Gallery as well as on the website keywestartcenter.com. On this important date the Mayor of Key West, Teri Johnston, will be presenting the Center with an official proclamation. ( More details to follow in Next Few Weeks)

The first Sunday of the month is designated as "Locals Free" day at the Key West Tropical Forest, 5210 College Road on Stock Island "A special docent-guided tour is available this day at 11 a.m. with a $5 donation to the Garden's Programs for Kids at 11 a.m."
The Garden is open 10am to 4pm. Members always have free entrance and dogs are always welcome. Visit the Forest to experience the biodiversity of plant and animal life and see how it functions as a sanctuary for an endangered ecosystem. Bring your lunch and picnic in the Courtyard by the waterfall. The Forest has free Wi-Fi and is handicapped accessible.

Tennessee Williams Museum to offer monthly first Sunday curator tours; free entry for locals
The Tennessee Williams Museum, located at 513 Truman Avenue, will offer a series of tours led by Museum Curator Dennis Beaver starting Sunday, January 5 from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. The January tour will focus on the premiere of "The Rose Tattoo," William's classic film based on his Tony Award-winning Broadway play of the same name and which debuted at the San Carlos Institute on January 19, 1956.
"Williams wrote both the play and the screenplay and oversaw the making of the film in Key West while living at his home on Duncan Street in the early 1950s," says Beaver. "He said he could write anywhere but he could write best in Key West."
The award-winning museum is already a destination for Tennessee Williams enthusiasts and scholars, with
a
n impressive collection of Williams' memorabilia and literary artifacts that help keep alive the importance of his legacy and the impact of the literary icon who
made Key West his home from 1949 until his death in 1983.
Displays include artist Jane Rohrschneider-Carper's model of the playwright's Duncan Street home, first edition plays and books, images from the late local photographer Don Pinder, and a new collection of photographs featuring Williams and celebrities of his era, many of whom were featured in his film and theater productions.
"We especially hope to raise awareness in our local community of the many contributions made by this literary giant to the city of Key West and Monroe County," says Beaver. "His choice of having a home in our city on Duncan Street for thirty-four years helped to make Key West the cultural and literary destination it is today."
Key West Art & Historical Society honors locals the first Sunday of every month with free admission to the museum and three other properties under its stewardship-the Custom House Museum, Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters, and Fort East Martello Museum. A merger with the Society in 2017 supports the exhibit and a continuing full roster of writing and painting contests, film forums, and the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration every March.
Subsequent Tennessee Williams Museum curator tours will be Sunday, February 2 and Sunday, March 1, both from 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Additionally, Key West Art & Historical Society invites poets and writers to submit original works for the 2020 Poetry and Short Story writing contests - components of the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration held each March in honor of the great American writer. All poems and stories must reference "The Women of Tennessee Williams," which can be loosely interpreted. Cost is $20 per submission and is limited to one poem and/or one short story per person. The first-place winner will be awarded $200 and the second-place winner $100 for each contest. Submissions will be accepted through March 8, 2020. Colorful New York artist Lisa Grubb
After a few years away from the island, former Key West resident artist Lisa Grubb made her triumphant return to the Key West gallery scene this month. For the month of January, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.) is featuring a new collection of Grubb's vivid paintings.
Grubb moved to Key West after spotting the island on a map one day in the local library. "It was so far away from any mainland, I was drawn to go there," she explains. "I moved to Key West after college and fell in love with the tropical environment. I felt like I had found paradise. Most everyone rode bicycles, the retail stores only went about half way up Duval Street and there were no 'chain' stores, only small boutiques. It was a combination of fisherman, hippies, artists living a very relaxed, bohemian lifestyle which suited me very well! I fell in love with it instantly."
Grubb started her artistic career in Key West by painting on T-shirts and selling her designs at Mallory Square. After painting and living on the island for a number of years, she moved back to New York City. "I always love visiting Key West!" she says. "It holds a special place in my heart!"
Grubb, who is self-taught, is a pop artist with a very distinctive style. She's known for her irresistible characters and vibrant colors. Her paintings are bursting with energy, as if they just jumped out of some fantastic place to brighten our lives. The artist's sun-ripened palette features tangerine, turquoise, crimson, royal blue, yellow and spring green in offbeat color combinations. With elements of pop art and naïve art, Grubb's work combines playfulness and sophisticated humor.
Grubb is the creator of Happy Dog and has written and illustrated two children's books, "Happy Dog!" and "Happy Dog Sizzles!" both published by Philomel Books, a division of Penguin Putnam. "I've always loved all animals and creatures, but dogs are especially close to my heart," she says. "In the early '80s, when I lived in Key West, there used to be a pack of dogs that traveled and slept around town together. Whenever I saw them, I would always say, 'Hey, hello Happy Dogs,' it was then that I started painting a big, blue dog and called it 'Happy Dog.'"
Grubb's paintings have been shown in numerous galleries from New York's Soho, the Hamptons, Key West, Cape Cod and Germany. Grubb's customers are worldwide. Many of her paintings have found homes in Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada and beyond. You can view Grubb's work year-round at The Happy Dog Gallery in Piermont, NY which is located on the Hudson River about 30 miles north of New York City.
You can also see Lisa's work on the 3-ton slabs of the Berlin Wall. She was honored to be asked to paint two slabs of the wall and bring color, energy and positivity to that canvas. They were transported from the warehouse where she painted them to Checkpoint Charlie, where they stood for several years for visitors from around the world to view.
"My paintings are big, colorful, vibrant and they make people feel good when they look at them," Grubb says. "They are fun images executed with fine art quality. As you look closer, you discover the detail that makes up all the abstract patterns of design which enhances the subject matter. I like watching people's expressions as they look at my art. Their eyes widen and they begin to smile - and that makes me feel good inside."

IMPROVING BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Monroe County ranks in the top 25 counties in the state for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. In an effort to protect the safety of these most vulnerable road users, the Key West Police Department will conduct High Visibility Enforcement Details (HVE) during the period of October 9 through May 15, 2020 in the following locations: North Roosevelt Boulevard from 1st Street to Toppino Drive,Truman Avenue from Windsor Street to Eisenhower Drive, Eaton Street from Elizabeth Street to White Street, Whitehead Street from South Street to Fleming Street and North Roosevelt Boulevard from 17th Street to Flagler Avenue.
These areas are over-represented in traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.
HVE details are funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation's focused initiative to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The goal of this enforcement effort is to increase awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.
Enforcement efforts will focus primarily on education to drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. However, violations may result in warnings or citations depending on the circumstances.
Remember:Drivers, obey speed limits, never drive impaired, and always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Bicyclists, obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic, and use lights when riding at night.Pedestrians, cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals, and make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a Key West Police Officer, now's your chance! The Key West Police Department is convening its Citizen's Police Academy, beginning on January 29th. Classes are held every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Plogging the Keys is a Keep Key West Beautiful program funded through the City's Utility Department. Every Friday morning volunteers meet our Solid Waste Coordinator Dee Dee Green at different locations from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. and help clean up that area by picking up litter and targeting cigarette butts for a special recycling program. "the greatest railroad story ever told" as Bramson regales listeners with the railway's history, the life of founder and builder Henry M. Flagler, and the story of the Key West Extension.
Bramson, who is the Florida East Coast Railway Company Historian, Barry University Adjunct Professor of History and Historian in Residence, and Nova Southeastern University Lifelong Learning Institute Adjunct Professor of History, is considered America's foremost authority on the history of transportation to, from, and within Florida. He has the largest collection of the Florida East Coast Railway and Florida transportation memorabilia in the world (larger than the state museum's collection and the Flagler Museum's collection), and maintains the railroad's historic archive.
He is the author of more than three hundred articles, has appeared on A & E, Discovery Channel, Fox FX, The Collectibles Show, History Channel, Florida Public Broadcasting, the Learning Channel and Turner South Network, and has written more books on, about, and dealing with the history of the Sunshine State than anyone else in history, with five of his thirty-five books dealing directly with the Florida East Coast Railway. His book, "Speedway to Sunshine: The Story of The Florida East Coast Railway," will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

Sandford Birdsey retrospective exhibit to be presented by Key West Art & Historical Society at Custom House Museum
Key West Art & Historical Society invites the community to a special reception on Friday, February 21, 2020 from 6:00pm -7:30pm to celebrate the opening of Sandford Birdsey's retrospective exhibit in the Bryan Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. The exhibit showcases many watercolors, oils, acrylics, and textiles created during the course of her career.
A Key West resident from 1980 until her death in 2010, much of Birdsey's art depicts the essence of Key West: b
oats, water, tropical foliage, Victorian gingerbread, street people, pets, and free roaming chickens
with lively color, bold strokes, and unique humor
. The accomplished artist, silk screener, and mosaic and mural designer exhibited widely and was also a well-regarded teacher who impacted many of today's successful island artists.

BAHAMA VILLAGE MUSIC PROGRAM OF KEY WEST
Fifth Annual Crooks Second Line Set to Party and March Down Duval Street
On Sunday, January 26
Bahama Village Music Program presents the fifth annual Crooks Second Line party and procession, set to celebrate the lives of musicians, community leaders, and friends loved and lost with a three-tiered event that begins with a Hog's Breath Saloon parking lot party at noon, a parade down Duval led by Grand Marshal Bill Blue at 2:00pm, and a Jazz Jam tribute at The Green Parrot from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
The Hog's Breath Saloon party at noon will be emceed by Bahama Village Music Program Board President Larry Baeder, featuring music, a Bloody Mary bar sponsored by Bombora Vodka and Hog's Breath, a raffle, and parade paraphernalia merchandise for sale. Photo placards for donor participants will be available for pick up and a group photo is set for 1:15pm.
Grand Marshall Bill Blue, Funeral Band leader Skipper Krippitz, and some of the island's best musicians will rally the Second Line for a 2:00pm parade down Duval Street, arriving at the Green Parrot at approximately 3:00pm. Musician TK will read the names of this year's honorees during a performance by the Bahama Village Music Program Joyful Voices Choir. This moving tribute is not to be missed, and the Jazz Jam led by the incomparable Bill Blue follows until 6pm.
Processional participants can have an 18"x24" photo placard of a loved one made up to carry in the parade and a photo and a bio posted to the Crooks Second Line website (
CrooksSecondLineKW.com) for a $100 donation to Bahama Village Music Program, the community's free music education program now celebrating its twentieth year.

world-class drummer Richard Crooks, who was sent off in style with a traditional New Orleans second line procession attended by hundreds of family, friends, and fans. The parade and fundraiser is Richard Crooks' legacy to the Key West community; placard proceeds support the
Richard Crooks' scholarship fund, the Wayne Hammond scholarship fund, and the Nancy R. Robinson scholarship fund, which send two Bahama Village Music Program students to the prestigious Berklee College of Music's 5-week Summer Performance program.

The Beach Conditions Reporting System (BCRS) provides daily updates on waves, currents, water and air temperature, algae and multiple other conditions at 38 beaches, including Lake Worth and 37 Gulf Coast beaches in Southwest Florida and the Panhandle.
