COAST IS CLEAR MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL BACK FOR ITS THIRD YEAR
Celebration Marking the Close of Hurricane Season Expands Its Program With Events and Fundraising Throughout Bahama Village, December 5-7

On the first full weekend of December, Coast Projects - along with Key West Art & Historical Society, Green Parrot and Blue Heaven - will host the Third Annual COAST Is Clear Music & Arts Festival throughout Bahama Village. The festival will feature local arts events and music by a top-notch lineup of internationally acclaimed performers including Rayland Baxter, SUSTO and Tim Reynolds to name a few.

The now-annual event was initially conceived in the weeks and months following Hurricane Irma's 2017 path of destruction when festival founders COAST and Green Parrot joined forces to create an event aimed at both lifting spirits and raising funds for storm relief.

According to COAST founder Billy Kearins, "The mission is still the same three years in. I like to think it's just as much about our community celebrating that we made it through the toughest part of the year - you know, the tropical weather and the slow season for the service industry - as it is about raising funds. Because sometimes lifted spirits are worth more than gold-backed dollars." Continuing, "That said, most of the scheduled events will include donation options at the gate and all funds raised will be directed to Key West Cares who have been helping with the Bahamas relief effort since Dorian devastated the islands in September."

Rayland Baxter Pontarelli
Susto Band

On Thursday, December 5th, Green Parrot will be the musical hub with early and late music sets including Dave Matthews Band lead guitarist Tim Reynolds playing at 10pm. On Friday, the focus will shift to Key West Lighthouse for an afternoon arts market and music throughout the evening with Rayland Baxter and his band ending the night with a full 90-minute set. Saturday will feature a larger arts market at Key West Lighthouse, an art walk and an evening of intimate shows at Blue Heaven and Andy's Cabana where Baxter and good friend Justin Osborne of the indie rock band SUSTO will play a full set to a tiny crowd of all-access pass holders.

Full schedule, details and tickets for the festival can be found online at www.coastprojects.com or by visiting the COAST Outpost at 803 Whitehead St.

The Annual "TSKW Winter's Member Exhibition : Outside the Line" Dec. 5-26
Reception 12/5 6-8PM
"A simple line can speak volumes, but this year, it's the wild, unknown space outside the lines we're eager to explore. As we burst through the ceiling onto our rooftop terrace, our thoughts can't help but turn to new possibilities and limitless horizons. For the members' show, we invite artists to step outside the lines, experiment with a new color palette or medium, create a canvas out of something unconventional, deliver a fresh take on a familiar form and find inspiration in the unexpected." For the month of December, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,  www.saltislandprovisions.com)  will feature a  collection of colorful oil paintings by the beloved local artist Dick Matson. To celebrate Matson's works, SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.
A Brooklyn native, Dick Matson has lived and worked in Key West for over 40 years. After graduating from The Cooper Union Art School in New York City and attending graduate school at Yale University's School of Art in New Haven, Conn., Matson worked in advertising, but never left his love of painting behind.
The majority of Matson's works, including the pieces at SALT, are done en plein air and feature the distinctive architecture and natural life found in Key West.  His palette is clearly inspired by the island's color and light and over time he has become one of Key West's most prominent artists.
"Dick Matson is an absolute legend in the Key West art world," says gallery owner Laura Richardson. "He's a singular character and it's an immense honor to feature an artist as talented as Dick on the walls of our tiny gallery."
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine and Florida Keys honey.  Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Matson's work will remain on display until the end of the month. For more information, call 305-517-6088 or visit  www.saltislandprovisions.com .

2019 Holiday Safety Tips
It's time to deck the halls, but it's also a season where fire can be a threat Key West Fire Chief Michael Davila wants to remind the community to be alert for possible fire hazards that can sneak into our homes over the holidays. Space heaters, candles and dry Christmas trees are just some of the potentially dangerous additions to our homes this time of year.
Each year, lives are lost and homes destroyed because of unsafe use of heaters. The following are some tips to ensure you don't become a statistic:
Never use ovens, ranges or grills as heating devices
Install carbon monoxide detectors
Keep all heating devices at least 36 inches away from other objects, including walls and furniture
Never use an extension cord with a space heater, and never leave it unattended
Keep candles at least one foot away from anything flammable and never leave one unattended
Be sure your smoke alarm is tested monthly
Use an artificial tree, or be sure your real one is fresh and keep it watered
Use safe lights, check cords for wear, and don't use more than three strands on one extension cord
Keep candles a long, safe distance from the tree
Do not allow children to handle the lights
Never use indoor extension cords out of doors
Unplug the lights before changing bulbs
Finally, even cooking can be hazardous if we don't follow a few simple steps:
Do not leave a stove unattended
Keep saucepan handles turned away from the front of the stove so that children cannot pull them down
If you deep fry a turkey, be extra careful; do not use the deep fryer under a deck and be sure to keep children away from that vat of hot oil. This is a potential dangerous means of cooking, so be fully aware of the hazards before you start.

Based on the book by Cheryl Strayed. Adapted by Nia Vardalos.

Directed By: Joy Hawkins

A struggling writer takes over as an online advice columnist who admits she doesn't have all the answers but mines her own mistakes to empathically respond to dilemmas that are at the heart of being human. The play was based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed of "Wild" fame (a book and movie starring Reese Witherspoon) and was originally directed by Thomas Kail, the director of Hamilton. Tiny Beautiful Things is a luminous play about reaching when you're stuck, healing when you're broken and finding the courage and humor to take on the questions which sometimes have no answers.

ENCORE FEATURE
The Key West Police Department is reminding bicyclists that front and back bicycle lights are mandatory. Riding without the requisite white front light and red rear light is not only dangerous, but can bring the riders fines of nearly $70.
As the seasonal population of Key West is growing, so have the number of complaints regarding bikes with no lights. Police are increasing efforts to stop, warn, and ticket these illegal riders.
Recent studies have shown that Key West, when compared to cities of equal size, ranks #4 for bicycle injuries and #4 for incidents involving pedestrians. Over the past several years, Key West has dropped in ranking from #1 to #4 for bicycle injuries -with the help of FDOT grants that help us dedicate officers for education and enforcement.
Ideally, the goal of these efforts is to educate motorists as well as cyclist and pedestrians. The goal of the enforcement is to change behaviors. Anyone driving a vehicle needs to be aware of cyclists and respect their right to share the road. Motorists must be aware of and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks. Pedestrians must use crosswalks and be sure they are visible to drivers when walking at night. Cyclists need to obey the rules of the road. The goal of these efforts is to make a real reductions in injuries and fatalities by changing behaviors.

Peirce, a writer, director, and Florida native who attended high school in Miami, will be honored on the 20th anniversary of the release of the groundbreaking film "Boys Don't Cry," which she co-wrote and directed.  The festival will screen the film on Friday, November 22, with Peirce joining Film at Lincoln Center Deputy Director Eugene Hernandez for a pre-screening discussion.
Two-time Golden Globe nominee and "Picket Fences" Best Actor Award winner Skerritt, who has appeared in more than 40 films including "Top Gun" with former Key West resident Kelly McGillis, will be interviewed by Rolling Stone's David Fear at a Thursday, November 21 40th anniversary screening of the seminal sci-fi film "Alien," in which Skerritt played the part of Captain Arthur Dallas.  Key West Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront 10a-2pm

On July 16 the Key West City Council approved a weekly Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront. The decision came after new organizers came forward to fill the void left by the abrupt departure of the Green Market at Bayview Park. Jill Snodgrass and Sean Krikorian, owners of the event firm Daily Plan-it, already organize the popular seasonal Key West Artisan Market at Higgs Beach so it was a natural fit. "We feature many of the same vendors who came to us expressing a need and desire to continue serving the people of Key West," Krikorian explained. "Many of them participate in a market almost every day somewhere in the keys, so missing an option on Thursdays left a void for them as well as the patrons."  The Truman Waterfront Advisory Board reached out to encourage selection of that recently renovated area as the new location and both vendors and organizers agreed it is a perfect choice.

The new event  began August 1 and continue every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The show will feature produce sold by the Homestead farmer who grows it, Rosie, the famous cheese lady, orchids and native plants, pickles, honey, handcrafted items and other specialties. Organizers are applying to make the show EBT/SNAP friendly so affordable fresh food will be available to more people. Working locals are urged to take advantage of the many prepared items and stop at the market during their lunch break to enjoy a seaside picnic while they shop. Parking is plentiful and free with a resident parking permit. Visitors are encouraged to use the free pink Duval Loop Bus which stops close by. The new splash park and tours of the Ingham are also available in the park.

"When the Green Market closed many locals were very vocal about wanting a farmers market option in their backyard." Krikorian said, "We hope everyone shows up to support this and helps make sure its sustainable."

Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

  THE KINGSTON TRIO
MARCH 10TH
DOORS 7:00P // SHOW 8:00P
The Kingston Trio began with Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane and Dave Guard in 1955... Home base: San Francisco. The three founded what turned out to be the most influential music band to emerge from the 1950s, only to be outdone by The Beatles. With talent and tenacity, they rose to become the undisputed kings of an acoustic musical genre that exploded onto the American scene, and still exists today!

10,000 MANIACS
APRIL 25TH
DOORS 7:00P // SHOW 8:00P
The band has covered plenty of ground in its 35-plus years, from cult-herodom to international stardom, to their current status as a cornerstone alternative band. But the sound and spirit of 10,000 Maniacs remains consistent. The live shows embrace their entire catalogue, and the lineup is still anchored by four of the six original members.
