The Other Main Floor Exhibition at KWAHS is from a Legend in Key West Art : Martha Watson Sauer.  Ms. Sauer Traveled the Latin American Countries Extensively. All her Work was WaterColor on Paper
Please Read Below from KWAHS
Exhibition Runs : August 23 - Nov.10
With her sketchbook and paints invariably in hand, Martha Watson Sauer (1912-2006) created an incredible body of artwork while also serving as a teacher of watercolor painting and weaving in the Key West arts community.  A Key West resident for nearly 70 years  Surroundings: Watercolors by Martha Watson Sauer  pays tribute to more than half a century of Sauer's work, which also include her personal effects and sketchbooks.  Her plein air watercolors spread beyond the island, they highlight architecture, landscape and people from her extensive travels around Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe and across the United States.  "My aim is to transmit to paper the delights of nature and the out-of-doors; the sun's heat and the deep cool of shadow," she explained prior to her death in 2005.  "My paintings are not puzzles.  I like what I see and try my best to present the scene so others may share in the enjoyment of it."
Born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Sauer came to Key West in 1936 during the Great Depression while the city was clawing its way out of its economic malaise by encouraging tourism with the help of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), later called the Works Progress Administration (WPA).  Key West had not been her intended destination.  "My mother and I stopped by accident in a travel agency in Miami," Sauer remembered.  "We saw these watercolors by [FERA artist] Avery Johnson with scenes of Key West.  It was such a dear little town.  So I said, 'Let's go to Key West,' and we did."
Arriving at a time when a number of the WPA artists remained active in Key West's economic recovery efforts, Sauer's innate watercolor technique was noticed by the professional artists.  She received early tutelage from members of the WPA, particularly F. Townsend Morgan.  Sauer was asked to create lino-block prints for tourist brochures promoting tourist destinations including the Key West Municipal Aquarium, the Hemingway House, West Martello and the Peggy Mills House.  Sauer became one of the original members of the Key West Art Center that was known as the WPA's Key West Community Art Center in the 1930s.  Her very first sale was a painting purchased by the eminent pragmatist philosopher John Dewey, once a Key West resident.  Today, her works hang in private collections in Switzerland, Japan, Great Britain, Canada and the United States, including the Key West Art Center located at 301 Front Street.
Exhibit sponsored by The Helmerich Trust and the Key West Art Center.

CALL TO ARTISTS FOR THE 25TH ANNE MCKEE ARTIST'S FUND AUCTION
The Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys, Inc. announces a Call to Artists for the 2020 Fine Art Auction, to take place on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the Studios of Key West.

The submission period for artwork is open October 15th, and closes on November 15th.  Online applications and accompanying photo(s) can be submitted from our website at www.mckeefund.org. Artists will be notified of acceptance no later than December 1st.

Due to space and time limitations, we are only able to accept 50 entries. The Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys, Inc., in its sole discretion, determines whether or not art submitted will be accepted for auction.
The annual art auction raises money for project-based grants to Keys visual, literary and performing artists.  Attendees can bid on original paintings, sculpture, photography, fiber art, ceramics, mixed media, jewelry and more.
Each participating artist receives 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of his or her work, while the McKee Fund receives the remainder to award to other Keys artists for select projects.  Founded by longtime Key West resident Anne McKee, the not-for-profit fund has awarded more than $280,000 since 1994.

Master Slacker at The Studios of Key West by Jack McDonald
Exhibition Oct.3 - 28.

Jack McDonald uses spray paint, stencil stylings, and acrylic brush work to create off-the-wall immersive paintings. With graffiti-inspired concepts, the imagery consists of colorful backgrounds, humorous characters, and strange overlaying text. McDonald has been creating work nonstop for the last 12 years-not only his own work, but also floats, theatrical sets, party props and backdrops. This exhibition is a culmination of that flurry of creative hard work. The Wonderdog crew joins in the fun, utilizing the open space in the gallery as a Fantasy Fest workshop, where glitter, tulle feathers, glue, you name it are transformed into costumes and props.

First Play of the 2019 / 2020 Season
"TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS"

Dec 10, 2019 - Jan 4, 2020

Based on the book by Cheryl Strayed. Adapted by Nia Vardalos.

Directed By: Joy Hawkins

A struggling writer takes over as an online advice columnist who admits she doesn't have all the answers but mines her own mistakes to empathically respond to dilemmas that are at the heart of being human. The play was based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed of "Wild" fame (a book and movie starring Reese Witherspoon) and was originally directed by Thomas Kail, the director of Hamilton. Tiny Beautiful Things is a luminous play about reaching when you're stuck, healing when you're broken and finding the courage and humor to take on the questions which sometimes have no answers.

The Key West Ambassadors Academy graduated its 32nd class during Wednesday's City Commission meeting. Eighteen enthusiastic citizens participated in the 12-week class. They join more than 600 citizens who now have a better insight to the workings of City government. Each class of the Key West Ambassadors Academy has been a special blend of dedicated, involved citizens.

During Wednesday's City Commission meeting, City Manager Greg Veliz congratulated Class 32. Two current city leaders -- Commissioners Clayton Lopez and Sam Kauffman - were elected after finishing this program. Other alumni have served as commissioners as well as sitting on other City boards.

The Key West Ambassadors Academy was established in 2003 and is facilitated by volunteers, all of whom graduated the program. Volunteers Lois Songer, Stuart Strickland, and John Teets facilitated the class.

Zazoo Fine Art Gallery on historic Duval Street is pleased to host the first annual  Art From the Heart fundraising event at the gallery - 622 Duval Street, Key West. Ph.305.294.8925
Portion of the days sales will benefit the SPCA and the night will be highlighted with a live auction of an original painting by Felix the Cat Artist Don Oriolo with the entire art auction proceeds benefiting the SPCA. Don will paint the artwork during the event!  Don Oriolo is well known across the entertainment spectrum, having been a fixture in the art, music, television, and film industries for decades. Oriolo is also widely admired for his charitable and philanthropic endeavours.  In June 2018, Don spearheaded the largest Cat Rescue in the North-Eastern states history. His nonprofit group ' Kittens With a Mission ' rescued 205 cats from horrific conditions at a dilapidated home, which didn't have running water or electricity.  Spending weeks at the home collecting the cats to be taken to for medical treatment, Don personally paid the $25 fee to have each cat spayed or neutered before having them put up for adoption.  Don also rescues horses and houses them at his Blue Arrow Farm in Pine Island, NY.  With his history of supporting animal causes - it is only natural that Don's Zazoo Fine Art Gallery partners with the Florida Keys SPCA.
Zazoo Fine Art Gallery features Don Oriolo's artwork of Felix the Cat, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Betty Boop, Popeye and Elvis Presley. In addition Zazoo represents over 20 world-renowned Artists and Photographers ( Artists - Tom Everhart, Ronnie Wood, Dr Seuss, Fabio Napoleoni, Tracy 168 and Photographers - Terry O'Neill, Milton H. Greene, Bob Gruen, Douglas Kirkland, Baron Wolman ) as well as publishes art and photography. Zazoo has a wide range of art, photography and collectibles for the novice fan to the serious collector.

Key West Film Festival to honor "Boys Don't Cry" filmmaker Kimberly Peirce and MASH & "Alien" actor Tom Skerritt with prestigious Golden Key Awards at Eighth Annual Festival

Key West Film Festival announced today that "Boys Don't Cry" filmmaker Kimberly Peirce and "Alien" actor Tom Skerritt will receive prestigious Golden Key Awards at this year's festival, running November 20-24, 2019 at the Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton Street.
Peirce, a writer, director, and Florida native who attended high school in Miami, will be honored on the 20th anniversary of the release of the groundbreaking film "Boys Don't Cry," which she co-wrote and directed.  The festival will screen the film on Friday, November 22, with Peirce joining Film at Lincoln Center Deputy Director Eugene Hernandez for a pre-screening discussion.
Two-time Golden Globe nominee and "Picket Fences" Best Actor Award winner Skerritt, who has appeared in more than 40 films including "Top Gun" with former Key West resident Kelly McGillis, will be interviewed by Rolling Stone's David Fear at a Thursday, November 21 40th anniversary screening of the seminal sci-fi film "Alien," in which Skerritt played the part of Captain Arthur Dallas. "Alien" will be preceded by a screening of the award-winning short film "The Phantom 52," which premiered at Sundance 2019 and stars Skerritt. Director Geoff Marslett will also be in attendance.
"We are beyond thrilled and humbled to be able to honor both Kimberly and Tom on major anniversaries of two films that broke boundaries and rules for their genre and paved the way for so many future voices to express their creativity," says Key West Film Festival Director of Programming Michael Tuckman.
Skerritt and Peirce join the Festival's past Golden Key Award winners Burt Reynolds, Marisa Tomei, Paul Verhoeven, Alan Cumming, Harmony Korine, Lois Smith, Mariel Hemingway, and many other celebrated actors and filmmakers. Now in its 8th year, the much-noted Festival is a showcase for dozens of cinematic offerings while highlighting visiting filmmakers, actors, directors, and industry leaders through discussions and workshops, with access to some of the biggest names in the film business. Red carpet events, parties and award ceremonies round out a world-class festival experience 'Where Passion Meets Paradise.'
VIP and All-Access Pass festival-goers can join the honorees in viewing and discussing their classic films. Limited one-day passes are pending seat availability for these events. The complete 2019 line-up of films will be officially unveiled to the public on Tuesday, October 29 during a Festival kick-off party held at Mangoes Restaurant, 700 Duval Street, from 7:30pm - 9:00pm.  Admission is free.

Key West Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront 10a-2pm

On July 16 the Key West City Council approved a weekly Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront. The decision came after new organizers came forward to fill the void left by the abrupt departure of the Green Market at Bayview Park. Jill Snodgrass and Sean Krikorian, owners of the event firm Daily Plan-it, already organize the popular seasonal Key West Artisan Market at Higgs Beach so it was a natural fit. "We feature many of the same vendors who came to us expressing a need and desire to continue serving the people of Key West," Krikorian explained. "Many of them participate in a market almost every day somewhere in the keys, so missing an option on Thursdays left a void for them as well as the patrons."  The Truman Waterfront Advisory Board reached out to encourage selection of that recently renovated area as the new location and both vendors and organizers agreed it is a perfect choice.

The new event  began August 1 and continue every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The show will feature produce sold by the Homestead farmer who grows it, Rosie, the famous cheese lady, orchids and native plants, pickles, honey, handcrafted items and other specialties. Organizers are applying to make the show EBT/SNAP friendly so affordable fresh food will be available to more people. Working locals are urged to take advantage of the many prepared items and stop at the market during their lunch break to enjoy a seaside picnic while they shop. Parking is plentiful and free with a resident parking permit. Visitors are encouraged to use the free pink Duval Loop Bus which stops close by. The new splash park and tours of the Ingham are also available in the park.

"When the Green Market closed many locals were very vocal about wanting a farmers market option in their backyard." Krikorian said, "We hope everyone shows up to support this and helps make sure its sustainable."

Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

Hello Movie Lovers,

High Season is almost upon us as the temperature drops to a chilly 85 degrees. What better way to escape the madness than enjoying a great film in a great theater. The Tropic staff and I are excited to announce the upcoming 2019/20 Tropic Season! Last season we had over 80 special screenings and we're looking forward to bringing you another diverse line-up of programming.   Monday Night Classics - It's back! One of our favorite series returns with a look at classic films, themed monthly, showcasing master filmmakers and film movements.

Arts & Cultural Series - After you hit up your favorite Sunday brunch spot, join us for a matinee screening of opera, museum exhibition, ballet or a theatrical production from around the globe.  Cinematheque Series- Cutting edge international films from around the world. Thursday nights starting in December, just in time for Christmas.

Cult Classics - It's Key West, and everything should be celebrated including film! Throw on a random costume, grab a drink and enjoy a beloved cult classic. Sing along to Grease, do the time warp to Rocky Horror, sip White Russians with The Big Lebowski and more!  Music on Films - The next best thing to being at an actual concert is watching it on the big screen without the crowds. Join us as we honor all things music, from concert films to musician documentaries.  Filmmaker Series - Inspiring filmmakers and documentarians present and discuss their work with Tropic audiences. Q&A discussion with these filmmakers swing from content questions to filmmaker how-to. This series includes the audience favorite, Southern Circuit Film Tour of Independent Filmmakers.

Key West on Film - Yes, movies are made in Key West, and yes, some of those people can still afford to live here. Come support local filmmakers and productions from around the Keys, including the always entertaining 72 Hour Film Challenge.  Beer, Wine, Booze & Movies - Key West loves booze. Key West loves movies. We have paired Classic films with your favorite wine, beer or spirits. 'Nuff said.  Kids Summer Series - Why chase your kid around the park when the entire family can be entertained in the cool A/C? Every Saturday, during the summer, enjoy discounted kid's programming. P.S. Mom, we have wine.   Attack of the B's - Hosted B-Movies from the 50/60/70's. So bad you can't help but love them. Saturdays, all summer long.   I'd like to take another opportunity to thank all the members for your continued support of the Tropic. None of this would be possible without you. You guys rock.

We hope you enjoy this upcoming season and we look forward to seeing you at the Tropic!
Sincerely,  Michael Marrero Executive Director

Key West Art & Historical Society Invites Public to Experience Free Key West Historic Marker Tours

Key West Art & Historical Society invites locals and tourists to experience a multi-platform, self-guided, and free tour program of Key West's historic sites designed to highlight the island's unique multi-cultural history and heritage through the Key West Historic Marker Tours website and phone app.

Originally designed and launched by Bruce Neff under the auspices of Key West Historic Markers Inc., the program merged with Key West Art & Historical Society in 2018 and consists of three primary elements: a map of cultural and museum attractions featuring 121 historic location markers that pay tribute to Key West's colorful past, phone apps that act as a personal museum docent to support those taking the self-led walking tours, and a comprehensive website at  KWHMT.org that provides a virtual tour of Key West, historic background and community information, digital collections of local postcards and cigar box art, and links to Google maps.

Key West has one of the largest historic districts with the densest amassing of historic frame vernacular buildings in the country. The island's history encompasses unique architecture, Civil War forts, famous authors' homes, connection to wars and revolutions, once-thriving turtle and sponging industries, sunken treasure galleons, slave ships, Flagler's railroad, boom and bust economies, and much more.

To plan your own tour, visit the Key West Historic Marker Tour website at KWHMT.org, download the free Key West Historic Marker Tour phone app at  keywest.oncell.com, or call 305-507-0300 for a free Key West "Voices of History" phone tour. 4 KWAHS EVENTS IN GREATER DETAIL BELOW From Carol Tedesco and Cricket Desmarais

Key West Art & Historical Society honors the island's literary history with exhibit at Custom House Museum

Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the "Literary History of Key West," an exhibit that opens with a special reception on Friday, November 1, from 6:00pm -7:30pm and runs through February 9, 2020 in the Byran Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. The exhibit pays tribute to a selection of nearly 40 writers spanning generations and genres.

Among the earliest and most familiar are Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, and Tennessee Williams - literary luminaries that were drawn to the island's bohemian, tropical lifestyle.  Others might recognize Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, and John Dos Passos. Then came the 1970s - " a perfect storm of gorgeous weather, inexpensive housing, tranquility, and tradition," says Convertito - which further attracted writers Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, Hunter S. Thompson, James Merrill, Richard Wilbur, and Allison Lurie. Today, the island is home to celebrated writers Judy Blume, Robert Stone, Meg Cabot, Rosalind Brackenbury, Ann Beattie, and Edmund White, as well as the Key West Literary Seminar, the Key West Writers Guild and the Key West Poetry Guild.

"Once the tradition of writers living and working on the island had been established by these early luminaries, others began to follow in their footsteps," says Convertito. "Newcomers to the island embraced the reputation of those who came before them."

With a heavy focus on individual narratives that include their connection to Key West, the exhibit also aims to  serve as a springboard for discovering the island's cultivation of inspired works and the authors who penned them.

"Understanding our long-standing literary tradition is key,"  says Convertito. " There is such an infusion of people and cultures in Key West, and it furnishes an excellent backdrop for writers, particularly the eccentric perspectives in narrative."  Going further, she says, "this island sustains a genuine balance of magical and mysterious which continues to attract Pulitzer Prize winners, Poet Laureates and Nobel Prize winners."

Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs.  For more information call Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at 305-295-6616 x112, email her at[email protected], or visit  kwahs.org .  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It Takes an Island.

Key West Art & Historical Society Call for Collections of Curios, Artworks, Baubles and Tchotchkes

Do you collect interesting and unusual objects? Is your home filled with knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, collectibles, artwork, and other objects of interest? Your unique treasures could be part of the upcoming "Key West Collects: Our Community Treasures" exhibit, one of Key West Art & Historical Society's popular returning exhibits, slated for the Custom House Museum from November 22, 2019 through January 5, 2020.

Keys residents who would like to have their own unusual or impressive collections considered for the exhibit should contact KWAHS Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. at 305-295-6616 x112 or send a description with photographs via email to [email protected]. The last "Key West Collects" exhibit, held in 2017, included objects such as exotic opium pipes, vintage dolls, World War I sheet music, scrimshaw from the 19th century, pre-Columbian artifacts, embroidered linens and other cherished objects collected by our local community.

"Florida Keys residents are fascinated in so many facets of culture, history and the arts," says Society curator Cori Convertito. "Displaying a small representation of their interests allows the museum to generate conversation amongst its visitors."

"Key West Collects: Our Community Treasures" will open with a special reception on November 22, from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street and will run through January 5, 2020.Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs. For more information on Key West Art & Historical Society venues and events, visitkwahs.orgYour Museums.  Your Community.  It Takes an Island.

Key West Art & Historical Society seeks unusual or impressive collections - like this collection of scrimshaw from the late 18th through mid-19th centuries - to be considered for the next "Key West Collects" exhibit in November.  Contact KWAHS Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. at 305-295-6616 x112.
