Promotion the publication of the anthology will include a reading of the participants' work, to be held at a local art supporting venue.

  Kirby Congdon
For publication assistance with his latest tome "New and Old Poems" Kirby is 4 time past recipient of the Anne McKee Grant Fund (1999, 2005, 08 and 2013)  and a former Poet Laureate of Key West.  Kirby's new poems avoid the static dictates for behavior that so often prop up an organized religion or polite society. Instead, he suggests the need for a rational and conscious consideration of meaning. The poems in this next book consider the conflict between life and death. He will look for a resolution that is beyond platitudes and, instead, admit a deeper, more creative translation of a life that avoids fear and confusion, and that recognizes, in their place, the experience of being alive rather than the shallow reward of being, passively, a good citizen.

Last Weekend Shade & Shutter had a
STUDIO OPEN HOUSE at SHADE & SHUTTER GALLERY. 1102 White Street WWW.SHADEANDSHUTTERKEYWEST.COM ,
E-Mail : Sarah@Shadeandshutterkeywest.com

Sarah and Mark send Summer Regards and briefly tell us :
Our event on Saturday afternoon was a great success. Thanks to all our friends and followers who came out to see Mark throw pots. It was great fun, and we plan to do it again soon.
During the event, Mark demonstrated how he attaches the foot to his ceramic pieces. The accompanying video shows how he puts the finishing touches on a bowl by polishing the foot. Not only do his bowls look great on any table, they are gentle on the tabletop because of the smooth finish. This attention to detail is emblematic of the craftsmanship that you can see and feel on all his pieces.
Next time you are on White Street in Key West, drop by the gallery and check out our working studio. Mark will be glad to discuss the finer points of ceramics and give you an appreciation for hand-crafted work.  Click this Video Link1 to Mark Crafting a Bowl

Young Writers Seminar

"Island in the Works" | June 24-28, 2019

Students will spend five full days exploring Key West and learning about great American authors who have lived and worked here, including Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Bishop, Wallace Stevens, and James Merrill. The program emphasizes journaling, close observation, and site-specific writing exercises, together with constructive feedback and group critique.
Daily classroom exercises will be paired with visits to local historic sites such the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. Students will picnic and write beneath the pines at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, and investigate rare archival material at the Monroe County Public Library. Site-specific writing exercises will take participants from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, and as far west as Fort Jefferson and Dry Tortugas National Park during a special daylong excursion into the dynamic natural landscape that has inspired countless writers.
Each afternoon will feature a writing workshop led by Nicole Dennis-Benn, an acclaimed novelist and lecturer in the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University. Throughout the sessions, a skilled and caring group of KWLS faculty and special guests will support young writers as they explore the relationship between identity and place, and discover the joys and challenges of the writing process. More information about our core faculty can be found below.
The theme of the Young Writers Studio references James Merrill's poem, "Island in the Works." Written from his Elizabeth Street home in the 1980s, the poem is rooted in natural phenomena and vernacular language distinctive to Key West. Full of observed imagery, a relish for language, and a great sense of humor, the poem represents the ethos of the Young Writers Studio.  Hit KWLSECAMPAIGN for a very comprehensive E-Mail they sent out

"As we prepare to usher in the unofficial start of summer with backyard barbecues, boating, and fireworks, I ask the community to join the FKCC family to reflect on why this day is special to all of us.  Memorial Day is a time to honor the memories of those who died for our country.  It is a time for heroes, both those who have fallen and those who are still living.  In an era when we are constantly challenged by acts of terror and threats that are themselves acts of terror, it is important to give a moment in gratitude to those whose sacrifices allow all Americans the privilege to live in the greatest nation while helping others to fight for and to share in the principles of democracy.

FKCC is grateful to all servicemen and women and their families for their dedication, commitment and sacrifice, and for their continued service to protect our freedom.  Over the years, the College has benefitted from the services of many veterans.  Each one deserves special recognition.  Today, I salute a fallen hero.  He has no Purple Heart medals or even any major meritorious awards. While he also has no children or spouse, he has a mom, dad, two siblings, and many family and friends who mourn for him.

Luke Lowder was not yet 23 when he met his untimely death in a motorcycle accident on College Road in Key West. From all indications, he was returning home to his dorm room at the College when he collided with something or lost control of his recently acquired motorcycle.  While the FKCC family is still grieving his death, I want to share more about his life and service as a soldier.

Luke was born to Kimber Karst and Craig Young and grew up in North Carolina and Florida.  As a junior in high school, he began to pursue his dream of becoming an Army Ranger-training with the Army and local police force and dedicating any spare time to physical fitness.  Upon graduation from high school, Luke made it into the elite 75th Ranger Regiment on his first try.  At 17, he was the youngest Ranger.  He later went on to join the 1st Battalion 509th Airborne Infantry Regiment.  He was deployed to Germany and Afghanistan.  Luke earned Combat Infantryman, Expert Marksmanship, and Parachutist (aka Jump Wings) Badges as well as several medals, including one for his work in the Global War on Terrorism and in the Afghanistan Campaign, which included a Bronze Service Star.

After four years of exemplary service, he traded in his goal of being what he referred to as the "Ultimate Warrior" for becoming the "Ultimate Seaman."  He chose FKCC to begin training for the next stage in his life.  He enrolled in the Diving, Business, and Technology program with plans to expand his studies to learn about marine engineering and navigation.

While Luke's story ended too soon, the FKCC family will remember his adventurous spirit and kindness.  We salute him this Memorial Day and will continue to value his service and dedication to our country."

In 2019, this debut novel won a silver medal in the Florida Book Awards Young Adult category. Kristina is a full-time librarian who spends her time reading, writing and talking about writing.  In addition to your grant, we would like to bestow Kristina with the honorary Richard Heyman award.   Malcom Willison
For publication assistance with his collection of poems honoring the home of poet Elizabeth Bishop, entitled "A House of Her Own".  Malcom's project is to complete and publish a set of his poems on the house at 624 White St. that Elizabeth Bishop, U.S. Poet Laureate, owned from 1938 to 1946, plus another five or more of my poems on Bishop, in time for the celebration in Key West of her 109th birthday next Feb. 8, 2020. The series of poems were begun in 1993 and have continued to the present;  Malcom, when I ran the Robert Frost Poetry Festival and learned about Elizabeth Bishop living here, I was so excited to find out more about her.

Maria(Mari) Elena Lindsley
For publication assistance with her memoir
In Elena's words: I moved to Key West and wrote a Memoir. I certainly did not set out to do so, but the words flew out of my head and onto the pages like the tides lapping on shore.
My memoir is definitely not a diary of wounds from a life well lived. It is often a  hilarious tale reflecting the differences between my family's expectations of me and the simple reality of happiness found in a pretty pink pastel trailer park on Stock Island.

Acclaimed mystery authors, celebrated storytellers and the fans who love them are set to rendezvous on the tropical island where so many have found literary inspiration during the 6th Annual Mystery Fest Key West, set for June 28-30, 2019 in Key West, Florida.  During the weekend's series of panels, presentations and social events, Mystery Fest attendees will have the opportunity to learn first-hand how to craft or refine their own tales of crime, murder and mystery from a stellar line-up of high-profile mystery and suspense luminaries and true-crime experts.

2019 headliners are Keynote Speaker Jeffery Deaver, the international bestselling and global multi-award winning suspense-thriller author of 40 novels, including the wildly popular "Lincoln Rhyme" series books; New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Heather Graham, New York Times bestselling authors Lisa Black, Carla Norton, and Diane A.S. Stuckart, along with authors Jane Bock, Micki Browning, Gray Basnight, David Beckwith, Robert Coburn, Bill Craig, Mike Dennis, Wayne Gales, Cheryl Hollon, Renee Kumar, Rick Ollerman, Shirrel Rhoades, bestselling Buck Reilly adventure series author John H. Cunningham and literary agent Bob DiForio.  Founded in 2014, the Mystery Fest Key West quickly grew in fame and attendance, but "still has the intimacy of a boutique-sized convention with lots of direct interaction between authors and audience," commented author, publisher and Fest co-founder Shirrel Rhoades. "And, because of the star-power of our guest authors, the fascinating panels and unique social events, we also attract writers and fans of other genres as well."  Beginning Friday afternoon, June 28, Mystery Fest highlights are to include an opening wine and cheese party on the veranda of Key West's iconic Custom House Museum with author Heather Graham and Key West Mayor Teri Johnston presiding, keynote luncheon with Deaver, a killer line-up of panels and presentations examining everything from "Forensics for Writers" to "How I Plot a Mystery," author book signings, a rum sampling event at Hemingway Rum Company/Papa's Pilar Distillery, a Bloody Mary Morning breakfast at the historic Schooner Wharf Bar, a chance to win a cameo "character placement" role in author Gray Basnight's next mystery tale, and presentation of the annual Whodunit Mystery Writing Award.   Event registration is $195 and includes all panels, presentations, a lunch and a brunch, and social events, with panels and presentations taking place at The Studios of Key West in the island's Old Town historic district. Those who register by June 1 are automatically entered into the Gray Basnight "character placement" contest.   Mystery Fest Key West 2019 is sponsored by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, the Key West Citizen daily newspaper, The Helmerich Trust, The Gardens Hotel, The Laureate Key West, Margaritaville Key West Resort and Marina, and Key West Art & Historical Society.  For a full Fest schedule, online registration, and hotel links visit

One Mystery Fest Key West Guest Will Nab Cameo Role in Next Gray Basnight Novel

Organizers of the upcoming Mystery Fest Key West have announced that one Fest guest will walk into the pages of a new novel by Gray Basnight, author of "Shadows in the Fire," "The Cop with the Pink Pistol," and most recently, "Flight of the Fox," an "electrifying, propulsive and timely thriller" that one reviewer has called "worthy of Robert Ludlum."

All who are registered for the Fest by midnight June 1 will be entered to win a cameo "character placement" role in the author's next release, a sequel to "Flight of the Fox," expected in 2020 from Down & Out Books

SOLID UNCERTAINTY by MICHEL DELGADO in the Sanger Gallery. Sponsored by Truman & Co.
Bottom-L) Delgado works with the idea of experience - mining visual images for their emotional and spiritual content. Never having a preconceived image in mind, he seeks to portray things that are not obvious in reality, focusing instead on the composition and the balance of the work. This amalgamation of uncertainty and confidence brings his work to life in surprising ways.

GRACY@KEYSDIGINET.COM Gracy Lozano Byrne
Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

Jazz in the Gardens Every Sunday 5:30p-8p; The Best in Jazz with an Amazing Outdoor Setting

Meghan Clay can be found Entertaining at the Garden's Cabaret Every Week.

The CRZBs Quartet will be featured at the Gardens Hotel on Sunday June 2nd from 5:30- 8pm. The Jazz Happy Hours at the Gardens will be the perfect setting to reveal their softer, classic  jazz  repertoire, featuring many  timeless standards, in addition to a taste of their penchant for progressive pop, fusion, and latin jazz. The Crizzbeez are unique in Key West, for both their Pat Metheney-inspired, modern guitar jazz, and a Steely Dan- type, sophisticated pop sound.  Fronting the group, and featuring many of his original compositions, is Chris Burchard, on guitar. Rob DiStaci sings and plays keyboards,  Joe Dallas on uprite bass, & skippo on drums.  So, please join us for a memorable display of classic jazz standards, soul, brazilian, and funk-fusion, with the 'Crizzbees", at Kate Miano's  wondrous Gardens Hotel, 526 Angela st. (at corner of  Simonton. Call 294-2661 for additional details).
