Lucy Paige & Cricket Desmarais Sent Over some GREAT NEWS about One of Our Favorite Annual Events
Tibetan Monks to Arrive in Key West featuring week-long celebration of culture and Buddhist teachings.
On Sunday, January 19 through Saturday, January 25, 2020, sponsor Tara Mandala Key West meditation group and host St. Paul's Episcopal Church invite the public to help celebrate the "2020 Sacred Arts Tour" at the church's 401 Duval Street location on the corner of Eaton Street. The seven-day Tibetan festival will be led by eight visiting Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery-students of H.H. Dalai Lama- and includes noontime dharma talks, a Tibetan Marketplace,
classes in the Tibetan Arts, varying music and dance demonstrations of Tibetan culture,
a
nd morning and afternoon blessings for the monk's week-long creation of a Medicine Buddha sand mandala for world healing, which will conclude with a procession down Simonton Street to the bayside ocean for a closing ceremony.
The tour aims to spread the message of peace, loving kindness, wisdom, and compassion while sharing their traditional Tibetan arts and culture, and to raise support for their monastery in south India, where their traditions and culture are preserved.
Community and personal arranged blessings by the monks are available.

Author Talk - Mark Powell
Acclaimed novelist Mark Powell will talk about his new literary thriller, "Firebird," at the Key West Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6:00 PM. This free event is open to the public and books will be available for purchase. For more information contact the library at 305-292-3595. The library is located at 700 Fleming St.
Mark Powell has been called the "best Appalachian novelist of his generation" by Ron Rash, and a writer "on the verge of greatness" by Pat Conroy. He is the author of six novels, including "Small Treasons" (Simon & Schuster, 2017), and "The Sheltering" (Story River, 2014). Powell has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Breadloaf and Sewanee Writers' Conferences, and in 2014 was a Fulbright Fellow to Slovakia. He holds degrees from Yale Divinity School, the University of South Carolina, and the Citadel. He lives in the mountains of North Carolina where he teaches at Appalachian State University.

Hometown's Winning Elections Campaign Workshop
(KEY WEST, FL, December 26, 2019) Hometown! -- Key West's and Monroe County's signature resource for candidate and election information is hosting a workshop for those running, considering a run or who are interested in campaign leadership in the 2020 election.
The half-day workshop will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel, 3841 North Roosevelt Blvd., Key West, FL.
The program begins at 8:45 am and will offer a full schedule of campaign topics, including budget and fundraising tips, messaging, speeches & debates, marketing and election paperwork.
Speakers will include elected officials from Key West and Monroe County as well as other experienced political and campaign veterans.

The College of the Florida Keys will open its 2020 VIP Series with "Florida's Female Pioneers." The presentation, led by historian, author, and educator, Dr. Peggy Macdonald, is on Thursday, January 9 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus. In its seventh season, the College's VIP Series invites the community to learn from the Visions, Ideas, and Perspectives of speakers of local, regional, and national prominence. The 2020 season, sponsored by Centennial Bank, includes presentations that focus on timely and relevant topics.
In her talk, Dr. Macdonald examines some of the women who have shaped the Sunshine State, including: Dr. Esther Hill Hawks, a physician who ran the first racially integrated free school in Florida; Harriet Beecher Stowe, famous for writing
Uncle Tom's Cabin
who kick-started Florida's tourism industry with her 1873 book
Palmetto Leaves
; and May Mann Jennings, a suffragist and conservationist who helped establish Royal Palm State Park, which formed the nucleus of Everglades National Park.
Dr. Macdonald is a public historian and adjunct professor at Stetson University and Indian River State College. A native Floridian, she gives presentations on Florida women's history with the Florida Humanities Florida Talks program. Her publications include a biography of environmental activist Marjorie Harris Carr and a forthcoming book on Florida's female pioneers. Dr. Macdonald has written about local and Florida history and culture for Gainesville Magazine, Our Town Magazine, Senior Times and FORUM Magazine. She serves on the Alachua County Historical Commission and is an alumna of the University of Florida, where she received a Ph.D. in American History. Dr. Macdonald served as Executive Director of the Matheson History Museum from 2015 to 2019.

Join us for an evening at Key West Theater highlighting the women of soul music in Key West!
On March 6th 2014 PBS sponsored a musical celebration the great "foremothers" of American music, billed as "Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House". It was the 52nd musical production and the first featuring an all female line-up including the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and many other stars. The evening paid homage to great female artists and their memorable music.
On December 29th the Key West Women of Soul - Terri White, Michelle Dravis, Victoria Horne, and Mina Lopez-Martin will take the stage and pay equal homage to the great women across our music culture with particular emphasis on Soul. These ladies have selected some wonderful music and will be using their spectacular talents to present a very special performance. Former Broadway star, Terri White has packed huge venues from coast to coast. The amazing voices of Michelle Dravis and Victoria Horne could be heard from coast to coast. The fantastic Mina Lopez-Martin born and raised in Key West, will try not to break any windows in the theater.
It's impossible to do this genre justice in one night but these artists are determined. They will showcase the music of Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, the Staple Sisters, Nina Simone, Jackie Wilson, Prince, Chaka Kahn, with a touch of Etta James and Stevie Wonder. They will be accompanied by the Soul of Key West band, the same group that has performed with Coffee Butler in the past, led by Larry Baeder, Clayton Lopez, Larry Smith, Bubba Lownotes, Dave Langett, and others. The Key West Art Center and Gallery Celebrates 60!
The Key West Art Center is currently housed in a historic wooden building in the midst of the city's old town waterfront area. It has been here since 1960 when a group of local artists was joined by several businessmen and persuaded city officials to save the historic building on Front Street which had been condemned. It was converted into a city sponsored art center. The building was originally constructed in the 1850s for use as a grocery store and was seriously damaged by fire in 1886. It was rebuilt as a single story building and the second story added in the early 1900s. The grocery was owned and managed by the George Babcock family for many years. In later years the building was the location for the first WPA Art Project under president Roosevelt.
From 1960 on the Key West Art Center and Gallery has had a mission, to provide a year-round sales resource for local artists. It provides a community gathering place, learning environment and public exhibit space. The Art Center is focused on safeguarding the heritage of Key West as a city of Artists. It is the oldest Gallery in Key West and over the years has hung work by hundreds of local artists, many of whom have gone on to become internationally recognized. Members are all Monroe County residents and include artists from Key Largo to Key West. Work includes painting in many mediums, sculpture, ceramics, fine jewelry and other fine craft.

The fundraiser will be held at the Center where you can learn more about the building and the history of this important organization. Delightful hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Small Chef at Large, wine by The Restaurant Store, Live Music by Brian Roberts and there will be a silent auction. Tickets are $60.00 and available at The Key West Art Center and Gallery as well as on the website keywestartcenter.com. Miami based artist Onajide Shabaka explores ethnobotany, geology and archaeology as they relate to human history, society and culture. Through a combination of abstract, calligraphic works on paper, documentary photographs, sculpture and found objects,

traces Shabaka's own family history along with the migrations of people and plants from the rice plantations of the Atlantic colonial slave era to 20

This exhibition derives from several years of ongoing research finding connections between colonial sites in the Low Country (Georgia & South Carolina), the Caribbean archipelago and Suriname.

For over twenty years Donna Nadeau has been photographing and painting backstage scenes, her co-dancers, and the men who paid to see them, in the strip bars and "gentleman's" clubs in which she worked, from Maine to Las Vegas, beginning in 1980. Her intention was to document an extraordinary world-its colorful habitués, front-line gendered power structures, and sometimes harrowing psychologies-from the unheard perspective of the women around whom the entire cavalcade still revolves. With exquisite subtleties of form and palette Nadeau endows her watercolors with the atmospherics of these usually obscured environments, and their physical and social architectures-from drab backrooms to glittering, mirrored stages; destructive relationships, underworld dangers, and the financial pursuit that keeps the industry in tension. The artist's own experiences are embedded in the vignettes she depicts, imbuing them with authenticity, humor, and stirring emotive impact. These paintings and the fascinating stories that inspired them are pointedly relevant to today's cultural discourse, although they have remained largely unseen in the decades since Nadeau began making them-until now.

A new focus, a new body of work, and a new name. New York artist Josefiná Cavaliná presents still life oil paintings featuring ceramics, fruits and vegetables.
Josefiná (aka Joseph Cavalieri) was chosen as a Studios' AiR in 2012, and has returned to teach four glass classes. This is the inaugural exhibition of Josefiná's paintings on canvas. A collection of serene and quiet images painted in his Little Italy studio in Manhattan.
"The subject matter in my paintings is close to my heart. I have worked in ceramics and my father owned a general store in Tarrytown, New York, which specialized in fruit and vegetables. I worked there as a teen."

Tennessee Williams Museum to offer monthly first Sunday curator tours; free entry for locals
The Tennessee Williams Museum, located at 513 Truman Avenue, will offer a series of tours led by Museum Curator Dennis Beaver starting Sunday, January 5 from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. The January tour will focus on the premiere of "The Rose Tattoo," William's classic film based on his Tony Award-winning Broadway play of the same name and which debuted at the San Carlos Institute on January 19, 1956.
"Williams wrote both the play and the screenplay and oversaw the making of the film in Key West while living at his home on Duncan Street in the early 1950s," says Beaver. "He said he could write anywhere but he could write best in Key West."
The award-winning museum is already a destination for Tennessee Williams enthusiasts and scholars, with
a
n impressive collection of Williams' memorabilia and literary artifacts that help keep alive the importance of his legacy and the impact of the literary icon who
made Key West his home from 1949 until his death in 1983.
Displays include artist Jane Rohrschneider-Carper's model of the playwright's Duncan Street home, first edition plays and books, images from the late local photographer Don Pinder, and a new collection of photographs featuring Williams and celebrities of his era, many of whom were featured in his film and theater productions.
"We especially hope to raise awareness in our local community of the many contributions made by this literary giant to the city of Key West and Monroe County," says Beaver. "His choice of having a home in our city on Duncan Street for thirty-four years helped to make Key West the cultural and literary destination it is today."
Key West Art & Historical Society honors locals the first Sunday of every month with free admission to the museum and three other properties under its stewardship-the Custom House Museum, Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters, and Fort East Martello Museum. A merger with the Society in 2017 supports the exhibit and a continuing full roster of writing and painting contests, film forums, and the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration every March.

Additionally, Key West Art & Historical Society invites poets and writers to submit original works for the 2020 Poetry and Short Story writing contests - components of the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration held each March in honor of the great American writer. All poems and stories must reference "The Women of Tennessee Williams," which can be loosely interpreted. Cost is $20 per submission and is limited to one poem and/or one short story per person. The first-place winner will be awarded $200 and the second-place winner $100 for each contest. Submissions will be accepted through March 8, 2020. Colorful New York artist Lisa Grubb shows at SALT Jan 2 Reception 5-7PM
After a few years away from the island, former Key West resident artist Lisa Grubb will make her triumphant return to the Key West gallery scene this month. For the month of January, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.) will feature a new collection of Grubb's vivid paintings. To celebrate Grubb's return to Key West on the heels of a successful career in New York, SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2.
Grubb moved to Key West after spotting the island on a map one day in the local library. "It was so far away from any mainland, I was drawn to go there," she explains. "I moved to Key West after college and fell in love with the tropical environment. I felt like I had found paradise. Most everyone rode bicycles, the retail stores only went about half way up Duval Street and there were no 'chain' stores, only small boutiques. It was a combination of fisherman, hippies, artists living a very relaxed, bohemian lifestyle which suited me very well! I fell in love with it instantly."
Grubb started her artistic career in Key West by painting on T-shirts and selling her designs at Mallory Square. After painting and living on the island for a number of years, she moved back to New York City. "I always love visiting Key West!" she says. "It holds a special place in my heart!"
Grubb, who is self-taught, is a pop artist with a very distinctive style. She's known for her irresistible characters and vibrant colors. Her paintings are bursting with energy, as if they just jumped out of some fantastic place to brighten our lives. The artist's sun-ripened palette features tangerine, turquoise, crimson, royal blue, yellow and spring green in offbeat color combinations. With elements of pop art and naïve art, Grubb's work combines playfulness and sophisticated humor.
Grubb is the creator of Happy Dog and has written and illustrated two children's books, "Happy Dog!" and "Happy Dog Sizzles!" both published by Philomel Books, a division of Penguin Putnam. "I've always loved all animals and creatures, but dogs are especially close to my heart," she says. "In the early '80s, when I lived in Key West, there used to be a pack of dogs that traveled and slept around town together. Whenever I saw them, I would always say, 'Hey, hello Happy Dogs,' it was then that I started painting a big, blue dog and called it 'Happy Dog.'"
Grubb's paintings have been shown in numerous galleries from New York's Soho, the Hamptons, Key West, Cape Cod and Germany. Grubb's customers are worldide. Many of her paintings have found homes in Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada and beyond. You can view Grubb's work year-round at The Happy Dog Gallery in Piermont, NY which is located on the Hudson River about 30 miles north of New York City.
You can also see Lisa's work on the 3-ton slabs of the Berlin Wall. She was honored to be asked to paint two slabs of the wall and bring color, energy and positivity to that canvas. They were transported from the warehouse where she painted them to Checkpoint Charlie, where they stood for several years for visitors from around the world to view.
"My paintings are big, colorful, vibrant and they make people feel good when they look at them," Grubb says. "They are fun images executed with fine art quality. As you look closer, you discover the detail that makes up all the abstract patterns of design which enhances the subject matter. I like watching people's expressions as they look at my art. Their eyes widen and they begin to smile - and that makes me feel good inside."

Why stress about parking and traffic to celebrate New Year's Eve this year when you can ride the shuttle? Let Key West Transit's Safe Ride do the driving! The shuttle begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday, December 31st and runs continuously until 1:45 a.m. Fare is just $2 per trip on the local route and $4 per trip for the Lower Keys Shuttle. The Safe Ride shuttles cover Key West and Stock Island, as well as the Lower Keys Shuttle between Marathon and Key West. The downtown drop-off and pickup point is Fausto's on Fleming Street, right in the heart of the action. Be sure to plan ahead, as the last City bus shuttle pickup is at 1:45 a.m. and the final Lower Keys shuttle departs Key West at 1:45 a.m. as well.
Buses will not provide service west of Simonton Street after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, except for the Duval Loop. After 5 p.m., all service will be from Fausto's. There will be no bus service on New Year's Day. Plogging the Keys is a Keep Key West Beautiful program funded through the City's Utility Department. Every Friday morning volunteers meet our Solid Waste Coordinator Dee Dee Green at different locations from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. and help clean up that area by picking up litter and targeting cigarette butts for a special recycling program. Some upcoming dates include: December 20th: 3228 Flagler (at the Dion's) 8 a.m.. December 27th: Duval Street at corner of Front and Duval 8 a.m.. January 3rd: White Street Pier 8 a.m.. January 10th: Eaton Street, in front of Restaurant Store 8 a.m.

Maikel Mesa Fría is a young imaginative Artist who lives in Havana, Cuba. Fría uses bright colors to paint picturesque Cuban landscapes inside of objects that are typical to the Cuban culture, such as cooking pots, watering cans and fruits. These dream like scenes bring the images of the Cuban countryside to life.
We'll have fresh shows monthly that will run in conjunction with the Stock Island Design District's 2nd Saturday art stroll.

, "The Florida East Coast Railway: For 125 Years America's Speedway to Sunshine,"

"the greatest railroad story ever told" as Bramson regales listeners with the railway's history, the life of founder and builder Henry M. Flagler, and the story of the Key West Extension.
Bramson, who is the Florida East Coast Railway Company Historian, Barry University Adjunct Professor of History and Historian in Residence, and Nova Southeastern University Lifelong Learning Institute Adjunct Professor of History, is considered America's foremost authority on the history of transportation to, from, and within Florida. He has the largest collection of the Florida East Coast Railway and Florida transportation memorabilia in the world (larger than the state museum's collection and the Flagler Museum's collection), and maintains the railroad's historic archive.
He is the author of more than three hundred articles, has appeared on A & E, Discovery Channel, Fox FX, The Collectibles Show, History Channel, Florida Public Broadcasting, the Learning Channel and Turner South Network, and has written more books on, about, and dealing with the history of the Sunshine State than anyone else in history, with five of his thirty-five books dealing directly with the Florida East Coast Railway. His book, "Speedway to Sunshine: The Story of The Florida East Coast Railway," will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

Key West Art & Historical Society will offer a "Woodtastic" Professional Day workshop for children aged 6-12 on Monday, January 6, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Students will experience different grains and textures of wood and create artworks entirely from their own imaginations or inspired by the works of other artists, such as this painted wood piece in the KWAHS collection titled "Tiger with Bow" by Suzie dePoo. Key West Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront 10a-2pm
On July 16 the Key West City Council approved a weekly Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront. The decision came after new organizers came forward to fill the void left by the abrupt departure of the Green Market at Bayview Park. Jill Snodgrass and Sean Krikorian, owners of the event firm Daily Plan-it, already organize the popular seasonal Key West Artisan Market at Higgs Beach so it was a natural fit. "We feature many of the same vendors who came to us expressing a need and desire to continue serving the people of Key West," Krikorian explained. "Many of them participate in a market almost every day somewhere in the keys, so missing an option on Thursdays left a void for them as well as the patrons." The Truman Waterfront Advisory Board reached
out to encourage selection of that recently renovated area as the new location and both vendors and organizers agreed it is a perfect choice.
The new event began August 1 and continue every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The show will feature produce sold by the Homestead farmer who grows it, Rosie, the famous cheese lady, orchids and native plants, pickles, honey, handcrafted items and other specialties. Organizers are applying to make the show EBT/SNAP friendly so affordable fresh food will be available to more people. Working locals are urged to take advantage of the many prepared items and stop at the market during their lunch break to enjoy a seaside picnic while they shop. Parking is plentiful and free with a resident parking permit. Visitors are encouraged to use the free pink Duval Loop Bus which stops close by. The new splash park and tours of the Ingham are also available in the park.
"When the Green Market closed many locals were very vocal about wanting a farmers market option in their backyard." Krikorian said, "We hope everyone shows up to support this and helps make sure its sustainable."

Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. The Beach Conditions Reporting System (BCRS) provides daily updates on waves, currents, water and air temperature, algae and multiple other conditions at 38 beaches, including Lake Worth and 37 Gulf Coast beaches in Southwest Florida and the Panhandle.
