Florida Keys Council of the Arts: 2020 Members Show "Trees of the Keys"
Opened a few Days Ago "The Trees of the Keys"
The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is proud to announce our 2020 Members Show, "Trees of the Keys". The Opening Reception was a few Days Ago at the historic Gato Building, 1100 Simonton Street, Key West. The exhibition will remain on display through January 2020.
This show encourages artists to celebrate our magnificent arboreal canopy- from the lush tropical hardwoods to the abundant fruit trees, palms, and fragrant flowering shade trees. The show will include 2 and 3-dimensional artwork.
The Gato building, which is home to many State and County offices, supports the Art in Public Buildings program which offers an alternate space for artists to display their work.
The Florida Keys Council of the Arts supports visual, literary and performing artists and cultural organizations throughout the Keys with several grant programs and scholarships. We connect artists to each other and to their audiences.

World Aid's Day December 1 at The Aids Memorial / Edward B. Knight Pier
We have 10 new names to add to the Memorial in 2019.
Please join the Board of Directors of the Friends of the AIDS Memorial and the Key West Community as we remember those who we have loved and lost. We commemorate World AIDS Day every December 1st, beginning with a candlelight walk from Key West City Hall to the Edward B. Knight Pier. The names of those whom we are adding in 2019 will be read aloud, as well as the full list of names will be ready by both the marchers and attendees waiting at the Memorial. There is no cost to attend. Those wishing to be in the Candlelight Walk can meet at the compass rose in front of Key West City Hall on White St at 4:30PM. Key West Film Festival to Present Community 'Freebie' Films | Full Fest Program Now Revealed
Along with announcing that the complete Key West Film Festival program, with events, dates, times and ticket information is now published and available at kwfilmfest.com, producers of the Fest - which runs November 20-24 at the Tropic Cinema and other Old Town locations - have announced two 'Community Freebie' outdoor screenings to bookend the Festival, both ocean-side events taking place at Lagerheads Key West Beach Bar, 0 Simonton Street.
At 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 19, a good 'ol fashioned Florida fright-flick titled 'CRAWL' (rated R for 'bloody creature violence and brief language') sets a father/daughter team against a pair of alligators during a Cat 5 hurricane. Sit and watch on the beach, or in provided seats on the water - if you dare.
At 7:00pm Sunday, November 24, the Festival continues its tradition of closing with a free concert film, this year with a 20th Anniversary showing of the classic homage to Cuban music, 'Buena Vista Social Club.' Admission is free for both ocean-side showings, with happy hour priced drinks available for VIP and All-Access Pass holders.
While 'Buena Vista Social Club' marks the Festival's conclusion, it is not the only film on the program that celebrates Cuba and its cultural connections to Key West. This year, the first ever "Havana at the Key West Film Festival Shorts Program" makes its debut, showcasing four award-winning Cuban short films created by rising filmmakers living and working in Havana, the USA, and Spain, and starring some of Cuba's most renowned talent. The shorts, which will be screened on Saturday, November 23, will accompany a screening of the documentary "Errol Flynn's Ghost: Hollywood in Havana" by Florida filmmaker Gaspar González,
who transports the audience back to the 1940s and '50s Golden Age of Hollywood in Havana, when Cuba's capital boasted more movie theaters than New York City and showed mostly Hollywood fare.

FRINGE'S SEASON OPENS WITH THE LAST FLAPPER
Fringe Theater presents the hauntingly beautiful one-woman show The Last Flapper, November 19 - 23, at 7pm in the Key West Woman's Club, located at 319 Duval Street. This play, written by William Luce, is an evocative exploration of the life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, a woman whose strength - and frailty-- helped define a generation.
Outrageous. Spontaneous. Independent. Beautiful. Zelda
personified the carefree ideals of the 1920s Jazz Age. But her
tumultuous
marriage to F. Scott Fitzgerald, and her battle for mental health, took a toll.
The Last Flapper
, set inside the long term care facility in which Zelda lived during most of the final years of her life, draws largely from her own writings as a middle-aged Zelda looks back on her life. Sorting through the details of its joys and losses.
"I love that the playwright used Zelda's own words - from her letters, dairies, and professional writings - to tell her story," says the play's director, Rebecca Tomlinson. "It's so clear that Zelda had a brilliant mind and an incredible grasp of language and imagery." Zelda was also a dancer, painter, and published author before she died in a fire at the Highland Hospital in Asheville NC.
Zelda is
portrayed by Stephanie Miller, a part-time Key West resident who has worked in theatre, film and commercials in Montreal, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Key West. Audiences have seen her at the Waterfront in The Jewish Wife, and in the Fringe Theater's Alice's Parlor and It's a Wonderful Life. The play's director, Rebecca Tomlinson, is Fringe's Managing Artistic Director. Among her directing credits are Fringe's The Clean House, Regina Monologues, Conch Republic, the musical, and Glass Menagerie.
Playwright William Luce built his career showcasing historical figures in one-person plays that began with
The Belle of Amherst
, based on the life and writings of Emily Dickinson. Luce also wrote critically acclaimed one-person plays about Charlotte Brontë, Lillian Helman, Isak Dinesen, and John Barrymore.
Last Flapper
runs November 19-23 at 7pm. Tickets are $35 general admission and $50 reserved.
The play is presented in the beautiful and historic Key West Woman's Club. Seating is very limited, so advanced tickets are encouraged.

National Book Award Finalist Kali Fajardo-Anstine - Nov. 26th at 6PM
Kali Fajardo-Anstine is the author of the short story collection, Sabrina & Corina, a finalist for the 2019 National Book Award in Fiction. Fajardo-Anstine is also a former resident of Key West and her fiction has appeared in The American Scholar, Boston Review, The Idaho Review, Southwestern American Literature, and elsewhere. Last Stand Board is hosting an open discussion forum on alternatives proposed in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary "Restoration Blueprint." This important document will update rules for and management of the waters surrounding Key West and the Florida Keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas.
The board is formulating a response to the proposals and we want to hear from you about what is important to change or to keep the same.
We need your expertise to help us make a thoughtful, science-based reply.

KEY WEST, Florida Keys - The Key West Botanical Garden Society, a 501 (c)3 non-profit corporation, is recruiting for 5 seats on its Board of Directors for the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. The Garden is an endangered ecosystem and is the only frost-free tropical humid forest and botanical garden in the continental United States.
Applications are now open for consideration with two-year terms starting in January, 2020. The Board specifically seeks a Treasurer/Bookkeeper. Other areas of expertise that are particularly relevant to the board include, but are not limited to: Accounting, Law, IT, Education, Engineering, Public Relations and Fundraising.
We need you to serve - to share your expertise, and contribute. Board responsibilities include monthly board meetings and participation in committee work.
The Key West Botanical Garden Society was formed in 1988 taking over stewardship of the Garden which had been created in 1935 through WPA funding. Florida Keys Council of the Arts Request for Grant Proposals, Deadline November 30
The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is seeking Monroe County artists of all genres (visual, music, dance, literary, etc.) to apply for two grant opportunities. The deadline for Artist in Schools and Special Project grants is November 30 at 5pm. Applications are accepted online, and can be found at

The Artists in Schools Grant program invites teaching artists in the performing, visual, literary or historical arts into the classroom. Teachers and teaching artists are encouraged to collaborate on creative projects together to enhance the existing curriculum
or to teach a new topic integrating the arts. All Monroe County public and private schools, as well as other organizations that serve children ages 5-18, are eligible to be partners for the teaching artist. This application is for the spring 2020 semester. Artists in Schools grants are up to $2,000.
Special Project Grant is intended for arts organizations or individual artists in Monroe County. The grant is to provide short-term support to vital, creative projects that do not fit into the other grant categories. Special project funding is limited to once in three years, up to $2,000 per request.

The Key West Police Department is reminding bicyclists that front and back bicycle lights are mandatory. Riding without the requisite white front light and red rear light is not only dangerous, but can bring the riders fines of nearly $70.
As the seasonal population of Key West is growing, so have the number of complaints regarding bikes with no lights. Police are increasing efforts to stop, warn, and ticket these illegal riders.
Recent studies have shown that Key West, when compared to cities of equal size, ranks #4 for bicycle injuries and #4 for incidents involving pedestrians. Over the past several years, Key West has dropped in ranking from #1 to #4 for bicycle injuries -with the help of FDOT grants that help us dedicate officers for education and enforcement.
Ideally, the goal of these efforts is to educate motorists as well as cyclist and pedestrians. The goal of the enforcement is to change behaviors. Anyone driving a vehicle needs to be aware of cyclists and respect their right to share the road. Motorists must be aware of and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks. Pedestrians must use crosswalks and be sure they are visible to drivers when walking at night. Cyclists need to obey the rules of the road. The goal of these efforts is to make a real reductions in injuries and fatalities by changing behaviors.

Key West Film Festival announced that "Boys Don't Cry" filmmaker Kimberly Peirce and "Alien" actor Tom Skerritt will receive prestigious Golden Key Awards at this year's festival, running November 20-24, 2019 at the Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton Street.
Peirce, a writer, director, and Florida native who attended high school in Miami, will be honored on the 20th anniversary of the release of the groundbreaking film "Boys Don't Cry," which she co-wrote and directed. The festival will screen the film on Friday, November 22, with Peirce joining Film at Lincoln Center Deputy Director Eugene Hernandez for a pre-screening discussion.
Two-time Golden Globe nominee and "Picket Fences" Best Actor Award winner Skerritt, who has appeared in more than 40 films including "Top Gun" with former Key West resident Kelly McGillis, will be interviewed by Rolling Stone's David Fear at a Thursday, November 21 40th anniversary screening of the seminal sci-fi film "Alien," in which Skerritt played the part of Captain Arthur Dallas. "Alien" will be preceded by a screening of the award-winning short film "The Phantom 52," which premiered at Sundance 2019 and stars Skerritt. Director Geoff Marslett will also be in attendance.
"We are beyond thrilled and humbled to be able to honor both Kimberly and Tom on major anniversaries of two films that broke boundaries and rules for their genre and paved the way for so many future voices to express their creativity," says Key West Film Festival Director of Programming Michael Tuckman.

Key West Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront 10a-2pm
On July 16 the Key West City Council approved a weekly Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront. The decision came after new organizers came forward to fill the void left by the abrupt departure of the Green Market at Bayview Park. Jill Snodgrass and Sean Krikorian, owners of the event firm Daily Plan-it, already organize the popular seasonal Key West Artisan Market at Higgs Beach so it was a natural fit. "We feature many of the same vendors who came to us expressing a need and desire to continue serving the people of Key West," Krikorian explained. "Many of them participate in a market almost every day somewhere in the keys, so missing an option on Thursdays left a void for them as well as the patrons." The Truman Waterfront Advisory Board reached
out to encourage selection of that recently renovated area as the new location and both vendors and organizers agreed it is a perfect choice.
The new event began August 1 and continue every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The show will feature produce sold by the Homestead farmer who grows it, Rosie, the famous cheese lady, orchids and native plants, pickles, honey, handcrafted items and other specialties. Organizers are applying to make the show EBT/SNAP friendly so affordable fresh food will be available to more people. Working locals are urged to take advantage of the many prepared items and stop at the market during their lunch break to enjoy a seaside picnic while they shop. Parking is plentiful and free with a resident parking permit. Visitors are encouraged to use the free pink Duval Loop Bus which stops close by. The new splash park and tours of the Ingham are also available in the park.
"When the Green Market closed many locals were very vocal about wanting a farmers market option in their backyard." Krikorian said, "We hope everyone shows up to support this and helps make sure its sustainable."

Key West Art & Historical Society invites locals and tourists to experience a multi-platform, self-guided, and free tour program of Key West's historic sites designed to highlight the island's unique multi-cultural history and heritage through the Key West Historic Marker Tours website and phone app.
Originally designed and launched by Bruce Neff under the auspices of Key West Historic Markers Inc., the program merged with Key West Art & Historical Society in 2018 and consists of three primary elements: a map of cultural and museum attractions featuring 121 historic location markers that pay tribute to Key West's colorful past, phone apps that act as a personal museum docent to support those taking the self-led walking tours, and a comprehensive website at
KWHMT.org that provides a virtual tour of Key West, historic background and community information, digital collections of local postcards and cigar box art, and links to Google maps.
Key West has one of the largest historic districts with the densest amassing of historic frame vernacular buildings in the country. Key West Art & Historical Society honors the island's literary history with exhibit at Custom House Museum
Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the "Literary History of Key West," an exhibit that opened with a special reception on Friday, November 1, from 6:00pm -7:30pm and runs through February 9, 2020 in the Byran Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. The exhibit pays tribute to a selection of nearly 40 writers spanning generations and genres.
Among the earliest and most familiar are Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, and Tennessee Williams - literary luminaries that were drawn to the island's bohemian, tropical lifestyle. Others might recognize Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, and John Dos Passos. Then came the 1970s - "
a perfect storm of gorgeous weather, inexpensive housing, tranquility, and tradition," says Convertito - which further attracted writers Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, Hunter S. Thompson, James Merrill, Richard Wilbur, and Allison Lurie. Today, the island is home to celebrated writers Judy Blume, Robert Stone, Meg Cabot, Rosalind Brackenbury, Ann Beattie, and Edmund White, as well as the Key West Literary Seminar, the Key West Writers Guild and the Key West Poetry Guild.
"Once the tradition of writers living and working on the island had been established by these early luminaries, others began to follow in their footsteps," says Convertito. "Newcomers to the island embraced the reputation of those who came before them."
With a heavy focus on individual narratives that include their connection to Key West, the exhibit also aims to
serve as a springboard for discovering the island's cultivation of inspired works and the authors who penned them.
"Understanding our long-standing literary tradition is key,"
says Convertito. "
There is such an infusion of people and cultures in Key West, and it furnishes an excellent backdrop for writers, particularly the eccentric perspectives in narrative." Going further, she says, "this island sustains a genuine balance of magical and mysterious which continues to attract Pulitzer Prize winners, Poet Laureates and Nobel Prize winners."

Do you collect interesting and unusual objects? Is your home filled with knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, collectibles, artwork, and other objects of interest? Your unique treasures could be part of the upcoming "Key West Collects: Our Community Treasures" exhibit, one of Key West Art & Historical Society's popular returning exhibits, slated for the Custom House Museum from November 22, 2019 through January 5, 2020.

Key West Art & Historical Society Announces Live Music at Martello Concert Starring Perpetual Groove and opening act The Happy Dog
Tickets are now on sale for an evening of live music starring legendary "jam band" Perpetual Groove with opening act The Happy Dog, presented by Key West Art & Historical Society via its popular Music at Martello series. Set for December 12, 2019 on the grounds of historic Fort East Martello, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd., doors will open at 6:00pm with The Happy Dog band starting at 7:00 followed by headliners PGroove.
Perpetual Groove, known for a sound that fuses Southern rock, funk, jazzy improvisation, indie rock and synth loops, and whose hits include "Save for One," "Mr. Transistor," "Three Weeks," "Teakwood," and "Walking in Place," will be performing from their classic play list along with material from their newly released self-titled album.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for a "backyard casual" setup that will include food vendors and cash bar.

Key West Art & Historical Society presents Children's Heavenly Horses Archaeology 3-day Workshop at Fort East Martello Museum
Children aged 6-12 looking for a pre-Thanksgiving adventure can enjoy "Archaeology: The Heavenly Horses," a Key West Art & Historical Society workshop held Monday, November 25 through Wednesday, November 27 from 9:00am-4:00pm at Fort East Martello Museum. This 3-day workshop features puzzles, traps, obstacle courses, field games, ancient alphabets, costuming, and live-action role-playing.
Led by instructors Rick "Deadeye" Wheelus and Kevin Lisinski, "Archaeology: The Heavenly Horses" student adventure teams will travel along the Silk Road, across the Steppes, and over the Himalayas guided by historic personas like Julius Caesar, Attila the Hun, and the Emperors of China as they discover the connections between the East and the West, save the world, and solve the riddle of the Heavenly Horses.
The cost for "Archaeology: The Heavenly Horses" is $120 for Society members and $135 for non-members and includes all supplies. The Key West Film Festival Launch party, the exciting
8th Annual Key West Film Festival 2019 lineup was announced--
including major fall films from Noah Baumbach and Destin Daniel Cretton.
More than 115 films and V/R pieces will be shown during the 5-day festival, which runs November 20-24. Nearly half of the feature films at the festival will be Florida festival premieres.
Baumbach's MARRIAGE STORY (Netflix), starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and Cretton's JUST MERCY (Warner Bros. Pictures), starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx serve as the marquee Centerpiece films, joining the previously announced Opening and Closing Night Films, Martin Scorsese's THE IRISHMAN (Netflix) and Trey Edward Shults's Hollywood, FL-basedWAVES (A24). The latter two films play as part of the festival's 5th Annual Critics Focus program, in which two of the nation's top critics curate the slots and have a pre-screening discussion. Shults will appear for a Q&A moderated by Collins and Yamato.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman says, "We are once again elated to be showcasing some of the major contenders for the Oscars this year and giving audiences in Key West a first look at these films, which are sure to be talked about for decades to come. And we are equally proud of the spotlight we are placing on Florida-based stories, not just through our extensive local programming, but as seen through so many films in our main slate program that take place in or are connected to Florida."
Other Spotlight films include the Florida premieres of Emily Taguchi and Jake Lefferman's AFTER PARKLAND, who will both attend the festival, and Bert & Bertie's TROOP ZERO, starring Viola Davis and Allison Janney and written by Florida native Lucy Alibar (Beasts of the Southern Wild). Another Florida native, acclaimed filmmaker Ondi Timoner, returns to KWFF with a special director's cut of her film MAPPLETHORPE, which took home the award for Best LGBTQ Film at KWFF 2018.
Film critics in attendance at this year's festival will include Collins, Yamato, and Eric Kohn, Executive Editor & Chief Critic of IndieWire; David Fear, Senior Editor and critic at Rolling Stone; Eugene Hernandez, Co-Publisher of Film Comment; Monica Castillo of RogerEbert.com; Tomris Laffly of Variety; Shirrel Rhoades of Adams Publishing Group, and Hans Morgenstern of the Miami New Times. These critics will participate in the 5
th Annual Critics Panel, moderated by Eric Kohn, and collaborate to decide the winner of KWFF's fourth annual Critics Prize. Unique in its nature, the Critics Prize, voted on by the critics in attendance, is presented to one film from the entire program.
Special events this year include previously announced appearances by Florida native Kimberly Peirce and legendary actor Tom Skerritt, who will be honored with the prestigious Golden Key Awards on the 20
th Anniversary of BOYS DON'T CRY and the 40
th Anniversary of ALIEN, respectively.
The fourth annual Golden Key for Costume Design will also take place, this time with an award honoring Arianne Phillips, whose recent work was showcased in Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Deborah Nadoolman Landis, a past president of the Costume Designers Guild and former Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, will helm a video presentation of the award.
New to the program this year is the Kibbitz with Critics series, in which the curating critics share two of their favorite films from the last year over brunch. Collins will present Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar's AMERICAN FACTORY and Yamato will present Florida-raised Lulu Wang's THE FAREWELL.
Additional films in the main slate with ties to Florida include PAHOKEE, A WOMAN'S WORK: THE NFL'S CHEERLEADER PROBLEM, and THE INFILTRATORS. Special guests from each of these films will appear at the festival.
The festival will take place in Key West from November 20-24, and includes special event screenings and a curated selection of over 30 feature films and shorts programs encompassing narrative features, documentaries, foreign language cinema, LGBTQ cinema, VR, and works by Florida filmmakers. The shorts programs were curated from hundreds of submissions from Florida, the United States, and a dozen other Latin American, Caribbean, European, and Asian countries.
The complete line-up is as follows. Eugene Hernandez and Brian Brooks assisted in the curation of the LGBTQ programming and the Virtual Reality programming was curated by Matthew Bolish. Filmmaker Ruth Reitan, a graduate of the University of Miami MFA program and KWFF alumnus, directed the programming of the local and short films.
