Raise a toast to Key West history with Key West Art & Historical Society Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., on Wednesday, October 9 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm during her popular "Happy Hour with the Historian" program at the BottleCap Lounge, 1128 Simonton Street, Key West. Discovery Saturday from 10-11 a.m. is hosted by the Dolphin Research Center, and children will discover the amazing abilities of dolphins. "Diving Dolphins" will include a game of "Guess the Skull" and other activities to teach children about dolphin biology. Space is limited. The Florida Keys Eco-Discover Center, operated by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, hosts Discovery Saturday for children in kindergarten through fifth grade on the third Saturday of each month. Located in NOAA's Dr. Nancy Foster Florida Keys Environmental Complex on the Truman Annex waterfront in Key West, the Eco-Discovery Center features more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, which interpret the resources and management efforts of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, two national parks, and four national wildlife refuges.

A struggling writer takes over as an online advice columnist who admits she doesn't have all the answers but mines her own mistakes to empathically respond to dilemmas that are at the heart of being human. The play was based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed of "Wild" fame (a book and movie starring Reese Witherspoon) and was originally directed by Thomas Kail, the director of Hamilton. Tiny Beautiful Things is a luminous play about reaching when you're stuck, healing when you're broken and finding the courage and humor to take on the questions which sometimes have no answers.

Bahama Village Music Program kicks of 20th season with 7th Annual
Sugarloaf Oktoberfest celebration
7th. Annual Sugarloaf Oktoberfest celebration is set for Sunday, October 6
at the Sugarloaf Lodge Tiki Bar from 3pm-7pm, promising a tasty, musical afternoon for all who attend. The annual fundraiser benefits the Bahama Village Music Program, an organization that helps bring free musical education to over 200 students aged 6-16 that would otherwise miss out on the lifelong gift of music.
"It's a good time for a good cause!" says Executive Director Katchen Duncan, who has been with the program since 2002.
Guests can anticipate a delicious pork dinner by South of the Seven, the new restaurant at the Sugarloaf Lodge, a silent auction and live music by musicians Larry Baeder, Ben Harrison, Bill Blue, and many of the program's talented students.

Now celebrating their 20
th
season, Bahama Village Music Program has served the community through music, with two choirs, two strings programs, a jazz ensemble, a ukulele orchestra, a steel pan band, a musical theatre program, music theory and songwriting classes, the "School of Rock" band, and a summer music camp. Led by Duncan and Program Director Kate Divoll, these classes and individual lessons are taught by more than a dozen student teachers, professional instructors, and dedicated volunteers, helping to create a sense of community spirit and pride while fostering important mentor relationships between local teenage musicians and their students, encouraging parent participation, and enhancing student self-esteem. The program is fully supported by local donors, foundations, and fundraisers.

Onscreen the Dynamic Duo worked together, thwarting arch-nemeses and saving the city with ease on screen. However, off-screen was an entirely different story, it seemed to be a battle of the male ego. Ward felt like a sidekick in real life, he felt he was underpaid and not treated equally to his co-star Adam West. He also felt the rest of the cast was awarded more luxuries than he was.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including grants from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Puffin Foundation, Pollock-Krasner Foundation; residencies and fellowships to The Artists Centre Dale, Norway; The Women's Studio Workshop, Blue Mountain Center, Acadia National Park; The Ballinglen Arts Foundation Ltd., Ireland, Fundacion Valparaiso, Spain, Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, The Cill Rialaig Project, Ireland, and The MacDowell Colony. Her work is included in numerous private and corporate collections, including The Library of Congress, and more.

Anayansi Prado is an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose independent productions have been broadcast nationally on PBS. Her works include "Maid in America" about Latina domestic workers in LA, "Children in No Man's Land" about unaccompanied immigrant children crossing the US/Mexico border and "Paraiso for Sale" about American retirees migrating to Panama. Prado is a Rockefeller Media Fellow, a Creative Capital Artist and has received support for her work from The MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, Fledgling Fund and others. Prado has a BS degree in Film from Boston University.

The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 Revised Edition
On Thursday, September 26, from 6:00PM - 7:00PM, Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Distinguished Speaker Series guest Willie Drye, author of "Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935,"to the Helmerich Research & Learning Center on the third floor of the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. Drye will discuss how he originally came to write about the 1935 hurricane, the people he met in the course of his research, and the hurricane itself. He will also present his newly released "Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 - Revised Edition," updated with additional details about the hurricane of 1935, along with a new chapter devoted entirely to Hurricane Irma, which struck the Keys in 2017. Willie Drye will be discussing the new edition of his classic book,
Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935
and signing copies on September 26 at the Customs House Museum in Key West. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore has this to say about it: "A scenario similar to the 1935 hurricane is one of my biggest fears as a forecaster today. This is a haunting and very possible scenario in coastal areas that have seen exponential growth since this monster. Willie Drye's book relives that 1935 horror and reminds us how breathtaking and unforgiving paradise can be."
Storm of the Century
is considered the definitive story of what is still the most powerful hurricane to make U.S. landfall. The revised and expanded edition includes new information about the hurricane and the people who were caught in it and a new chapter about Hurricane Irma. The Labor Day hurricane's 200 mph winds and 20-foot storm surge devastated the Upper Keys on September 2, 1935, killing more than 400 people, including about 260 World War I veterans living in beachfront work camps and working on a construction project. Florida Keys Council of the Arts and the South Florida Cultural Consortium present FREE Application Workshop in Key West
The South Florida Cultural Consortium Program offers the largest regional, government-sponsored artists' grants in the United States, awarding $15,000 and $7,500 grants to resident visual and media artists from the counties of Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach. Since it was established in 1988, the Consortium has awarded close to $4 million in fellowships to over 300 artists. In addition to receiving the grant, the artists take part in an exhibition hosted and organized by a visual arts institution in one of the five counties.
2019/2020 SFCC WORKSHOPS: DEMYSTIFYING THE PROCESS
How are recipients selected and how can an applicant improve his/her chances of being noticed? Find out at one of four workshops being offered across the South Florida region. With the contracts in place and a new fiscal year around the corner, the City of Key West wants to formally introduce its new City Manager, Greg Veliz and Assistant City Manager, Patti McLauchlin. With the retirement of Jim Scholl, Veliz has been chosen by the City Commission to move from his former role as assistant city manager. Veliz tapped McLauchlin from her former role as IT director.
Veliz was born and raised in Key West and came to work with the City in 2005 as a field inspector with the environmental protection/utilities division. He was named deputy director of the Community Service Department in 2006, then promoted to the position of director in 2008. This department encompasses some of the most fundamental aspects of providing service to the community ranging from keeping the streets clean through public works, to overseeing City
parks and recreation areas. Special events, sidewalk and right-of-way maintenance and City facilities: all fall under the purview of this department.
In 2014, Veliz was promoted to Assistant City Manager of Operations where he worked directly with the City Manager overseeing the operations of some 15 City departments including the ports, utilities, engineering, and transit.
In 2016, the City's two assistant city manager positions were melded into one, and Veliz also took on the administrative responsibilities of that position.
Veliz is passionately involved in the island's youth and sports. He's been an active volunteer coach with the youth leagues, the Boys and Girls Club and Relay for Life. He's served on multiple boards throughout the years.
Veliz and his wife Teri are celebrating 23 years of marriage this year. They have two daughters and three sons, one of whom - Gregory - is currently pitching for the LA Angels. In addition, they have eight grandchildren.
Patti McLauchlin hails from South Carolina. Some 40 years ago, she and her 14-month old son Franklin came to Key West.
McLauchlin has worked with the City for more than 30 years in a number of capacities, giving her a broad understanding of every aspect of municipal government. She started with the police department in dispatch and later the records department. While there, she discovered her propensity for information technology by creating a computer system for records. She later served the City as a trainer.
In 2002, she was promoted to the role of IT Director. Under her leadership, the IT department has helped the City evolve with fast-moving technology to provide accessible, state-of-the-art access to all aspects of City government to the community. During her tenure, all City departments have become more responsive to the public's needs through IT ranging from in-car police reporting to on-line payments. McLauchlin has improved the City's efficiency in all departments with the introduction of new software systems, hardware, and aggressive training programs to keep an every-changing staff up to date.
McLauchlin's son Franklin, after growing up in Key West, became a United States Air Force fighter pilot. He has retired and lives in South Carolina with the light of McLaughlin's life: her two grandsons.

Beginning October 1
st, Key West residents can purchase their new annual residential parking permit for Old Town. The new multi-colored stickers will help ensure marked residential parking spaces are reserved for residents.
The permits cost $20 a year. They are available at the Monroe County Tax Assessor's office at the Harvey Government Center. Applicants will need to show proof of residency in Key West as well as a driver's license and vehicle registration in order to obtain the residential parking permit.
In addition to ensuring that residents can park in the marked residential spaces, the permit parking for up to four hours, one time per day, without paying in any one of the five parking lots:
Fire Station #2 in the 600 block of Simonton,
Key West Bight main lot in the 800 block of Caroline,
Park N Ride garage in the 300 block of Grinnell,
Truman Waterfront Park (except during events),
Smather's Beach on-street parking on South Roosevelt Blvd
In order to use the permit in these areas, you must enter the permit number into the pay to park machine and display the receipt on your dash.
Old Town has over 1000 parking spaces marked as residential. Eligible vehicles will have exclusive rights to these spaces. The permits are available to residents, real estate property owners, military personnel stationed in Key West, seasonal residents who reside within the city for over four months of the year, and business vehicles affiliated with a business licensed in the city.
The parking permit does not in any way affect the 750 unmarked spaces or the 60 handicapped parking spaces in Old Town. Downtown workers who are not eligible for the permits are encouraged to explore the special monthly permit at the Park N Ride on Grinnell Street.

New Key West Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront 10a-2pm
On July 16 the Key West City Council approved a weekly Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront. The decision came after new organizers came forward to fill the void left by the abrupt departure of the Green Market at Bayview Park. Jill Snodgrass and Sean Krikorian, owners of the event firm Daily Plan-it, already organize the popular seasonal Key West Artisan Market at Higgs Beach so it was a natural fit. "We feature many of the same vendors who came to us expressing a need and desire to continue serving the people of Key West," Krikorian explained. "Many of them participate in a market almost every day somewhere in the keys, so missing an option on Thursdays left a void for them as well as the patrons." The Truman Waterfront Advisory Board reached
out to encourage selection of that recently renovated area as the new location and both vendors and organizers agreed it is a perfect choice.
The new event will began August 1 and continue every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The show will feature produce sold by the Homestead farmer who grows it, Rosie, the famous cheese lady, orchids and native plants, pickles, honey, handcrafted items and other specialties. Organizers are applying to make the show EBT/SNAP friendly so affordable fresh food will be available to more people. Working locals are urged to take advantage of the many prepared items and stop at the market during their lunch break to enjoy a seaside picnic while they shop. Parking is plentiful and free with a resident parking permit. Visitors are encouraged to use the free pink Duval Loop Bus which stops close by. The new splash park and tours of the Ingham are also available in the park.
"When the Green Market closed many locals were very vocal about wanting a farmers market option in their backyard." Krikorian said, "We hope everyone shows up to support this and helps make sure its sustainable."

The Nursery at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden will be offering native trees, shrubs and vines for sale from 9am to noon on Saturday, September 21, 2019. 161 species of plants are now available bringing the inventory to more than 1,500 plants which attract butterflies and birds. Key West Tropical Forest members receive a 15% discount. All proceeds directly benefit the Garden's conservation program.
The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden on Stock Island is seeking volunteers to help with the Nursery, Garden and general office help. No experience necessary and training is provided. Volunteer hours apply toward Community Service for students, City, County & State Programs. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. The Beach Conditions Reporting System (BCRS) provides daily updates on waves, currents, water and air temperature, algae and multiple other conditions at 38 beaches, including Lake Worth and 37 Gulf Coast beaches in Southwest Florida and the Panhandle. Originally designed and launched by Bruce Neff under the auspices of Key West Historic Markers Inc., the program merged with Key West Art & Historical Society in 2018 and consists of three primary elements: a map of cultural and museum attractions featuring 121 historic location markers that pay tribute to Key West's colorful past, phone apps that act as a personal museum docent to support those taking the self-led walking tours, and a comprehensive website at
KWHMT.org that provides a virtual tour of Key West, historic background and community information, digital collections of local postcards and cigar box art, and links to Google maps.
Key West has one of the largest historic districts with the densest amassing of historic frame vernacular buildings in the country. The island's history encompasses unique architecture, Civil War forts, famous authors' homes, connection to wars and revolutions, once-thriving turtle and sponging industries, sunken treasure galleons, slave ships, Flagler's railroad, boom and bust economies, and much more.

Key West Art & Historical Society Call for Collections of Curios, Artworks, Baubles and Tchotchkes
Do you collect interesting and unusual objects? Is your home filled with knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, collectibles, artwork, and other objects of interest? Your unique treasures could be part of the upcoming "Key West Collects: Our Community Treasures" exhibit, one of Key West Art & Historical Society's popular returning exhibits, slated for the Custom House Museum from November 22, 2019 through January 5, 2020.
Keys residents who would like to have their own unusual or impressive collections considered for the exhibit should contact KWAHS Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. at 305-295-6616 x112 or send a description with photographs via email to [email protected]. The last "Key West Collects" exhibit, held in 2017, included objects such as exotic opium pipes, vintage dolls, World War I sheet music, scrimshaw from the 19th century, pre-Columbian artifacts, embroidered linens and other cherished objects collected by our local community.
"Florida Keys residents are fascinated in so many facets of culture, history and the arts," says Society curator Cori Convertito. "Displaying a small representation of their interests allows the museum to generate conversation amongst its visitors."

Key West Art & Historical Society Announces Live Music at Martello Concert Starring Perpetual Groove and opening act The Happy Dog
Tickets are now on sale for an evening of live music starring legendary "jam band" Perpetual Groove with opening act The Happy Dog, presented by Key West Art & Historical Society via its popular Music at Martello series. Set for December 12, 2019 on the grounds of historic Fort East Martello, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd., doors will open at 6:00pm with The Happy Dog band starting at 7:00 followed by headliners PGroove.
Perpetual Groove, known for a sound that fuses Southern rock, funk, jazzy improvisation, indie rock and synth loops, and whose hits include "Save for One," "Mr. Transistor," "Three Weeks," "Teakwood," and "Walking in Place," will be performing from their classic play list along with material from their newly released self-titled album.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for a "backyard casual" setup that will include food vendors and cash bar.

Sail into historic exploration with Key West Art & Historical Society and archaeologist Corey Malcom, Ph.D., aboard luxury sailing catamaran Argo Navis
On Tuesday, October 29, noted archaeologist and Mel Fisher Maritime Museum curator Corey Malcom, Ph.D., will lead a historically illuminating morning seafaring excursion presented by Key West Art & Historical Society aboard the 75ft long, 35ft beam luxury catamaran SV Argo Navis, departing from the dock at 201 William Street at 10:00a.m. and returning at noon.
Passengers can make their own Bloody Marys, enjoy mimosas or non-alcoholic beverages, fresh fruit, delicious breakfast pastries and salt spray as Dr. Malcom, who is Director of Archaeology for the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and President of the Key West Maritime Historical Society, shares the back-story and personal insights on the day's topic, "The History of the Key West Bight," exploring the rich history of the water, the shorefronts, and the islands along the western end of Key West.
Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs, tickets are $45.00 for KWAHS members and $55.00 for non-members. Space is limited to 50 passengers, so early registration is recommended.
