' The Glimmer Twins '
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones perform at a secret club gig for 600 lucky fans as the band warm up for their 4 dates in London and New York the following month. Fans paid only $20 for tickets at La Trabendo Rock Club on October 25, 2012 in Paris, France.

Jagger and Richards adopted the nickname " The Glimmer Twins " after a vacation cruise they took to Brazil in December 1968/January 1969 with their then-girlfriends, Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg. An older English couple on the ship kept asking Richards and Jagger who they were. When they refused to reveal their identities, the woman reportedly kept asking, " just give us a glimmer ", which amused Jagger and Richards.

CoffeeMill celebrates dance with 2 performances at Tennessee Williams Theater May 17 and May 18.
For over 36 years, CoffeeMill's instructional offerings have nurtured dancers young and old, supporting their professional and recreational development. On Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, they celebrate with DanceWorks 17!, their annual spring dance concert featuring the ballet
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as well as several newly choreographed contemporary works at 7:30pm at Tennessee Williams Theater.
This year's annual concert brings together the best works produced by students, faculty, and professional dancers as they collaborate on an astounding celebration of all styles of dance including ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, modern, tap, jazz, lyrical, African, belly dance, and tumbling. The audience can expect riveting performances by CoffeeMill instructors Leigh Pujado, Marissa Ajamian, Kara Querio, the Southernmost Shimmies, and the Young Dance Collective, CoffeeMill's newly-formed non-profit and award-winning dance company comprised of dancers ages 8-17. The Collective is led by Joseph Goodman, a classically trained ballet dancer that offers the young dancers a rigorous syllabus in the Russian-based Vaganova technique.
With its two studios-"By the Bay," located near the SearsTown Publix, and "The Annex," at 804 White Street- CoffeeMill has increased its dance and fitness offerings and special workshops, intensives, and camps. This summer's roster includes themed morning camps for children ages 3-8 at The Annex Studio from Monday, June 10 - Friday, July 19; a summer intensive series for children of all ages from Monday, June 3 - Friday July 26; and Key West Modern Dance Workshop 2019, a free (for Monroe County residents with a $25 registration fee)one-week modern dance intensive of technique, repertory, and composition classes for mixed levels ages 12 and up at By the Bay, along with regularly scheduled classes at both locations. The annual DanceWorks! performances are a culmination of the time, talent, and dedication of students and instructors and the many opportunities for learning that CoffeeMill provides. Native Plant Sale at the Key West Tropical Forest
KEY WEST, Florida Keys
- The Nursery at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden will be offering native trees, shrubs and vines for sale from 9am to noon on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Nursery volunteers have propagated 161 species of plants bringing the inventory to more than 1,500 plants which attract butterflies and birds. Many plants are on the State of Florida endangered species list. Sizes range from one-gallon to 15-gallon pots. Key West Tropical Forest members receive a 15% discount. All proceeds directly benefit the Garden's conservation program.

Key West Sustainability Coordinator, Alison Higgins will be speaking on "Anticipated Effect of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise in Key West". "I first came to Key West as part of a motley sailboat crew with a plan to go on to the Bahamas," Paige says. "We were having way too much fun and we all had a very hard time leaving Key West to continue the journey. The boat stayed on after I returned to my other life, but I would return often for visits - at one point I told myself I would give it one year and I went and got a real job, but as happens to most of us, that year became many more - like thirty something!"
Key West's expansive landscape is very evident in Paige's work. "The geographical landscape is a huge influence both to me as a person and, more notably, as an artist," Page explains. "Anyone who lives here cannot escape the spaciousness of our endless sky and horizon lines - particularly as I live in Sugarloaf and the drive to Key West is always so amazing, with constant movement of both clouds and colors in the big sky and the ever-changing hues of the blue/green waters. The vegetation and mangrove islands add some soft natural shapes and shades - they break up and temper the sky and water. You will certainly see that visual in my abstracted landscapes that are part of this show."
After years of creating, Paige has found a home in the abstract expressionist style. " I had no formal art training or schooling and had never consider myself 'artist' material, but I found myself enjoying some local classes and playing around with paints and canvases," she says. "I would show up to Jim Salem's art group on Thursdays and found that I could learn some real basics and beyond in painting realistic images but could make them somewhat expressionist. I could express myself in my own hand without my work having to look like anyone else's. It was not until I took some abstract art classes that I began to feel liberated and that I did not have to play by any rules of perfection - I could free wheel."
Mixing paint colors and utilizing all manner of brushes, palette knives, oil sticks and pens allows Paige to fully engage in abstract art making. "My works tend to vary; colorful and playful, energetic, bold and direct or softer and sensitive, tending toward the intuitive," she says. "I am inspired by the variance of hue and color creating varying forms on the canvas; dark and light, harsh and soft, the mixing of bits of color and meandering line to bring life to the canvas. Abstract expressionism, for me, is a process of releasing the subconscious. I am intrigued by the small glimpses, connections and larger emotional arisings that chance to work together and become the work.

For her fused glass project "Waves of the Future"
This project will involve three separate but complementary pieces of wall art, each comprised of a brushed metal backing with attached fused glass panel created in a manner to evoke the power and majesty of the sea in the mind of the viewer.
Debbie works mainly with sheets of fusing glass, cutting and placing, then fusing and often slumping to add dimension. She also works with tempered glass, which would otherwise end up in a landfill. She shatters this glass, then fuses it into something entirely new.
Louis Wray
For his multi-media textile project "Projections and Patterns of the Sea"
Louis received an Anne McKee Grant in 2009 and is in the midst of developing a series of patterns that can be printed on nearly any medium. Textiles, aluminum, vinyl, magnets, polyester stretch fabric, canvas. These patterns are being created from imagery surrounding coral and the ocean. It is to bring light to the decline of our sea and how we need to bring it above the surface to see the beauty below.
Nicholas Bergery :
For his mixed media photo print project "Heavenly Gardens"
Nicholas is one of our participating artists for the auction and was an Anne McKee grant winner both in 2006 and 2007. Nicholas will be creating a new body of work on the theme of Heavenly Gardens, a series of six medium and six large giclée prints on canvas for a Key West audience. He will shoot a series of exotic flowers, plants and trees in Key West's tropical gardens, and combine these images with colorful clouds. Some prints will be embellished with hand tinting, drawing and painting, using colored pencils and pastels, inks and retouching dyes.

The City of Key West had a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony as Nelson English Park reopens to the public. The park, located at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center at 300 Catherine Street, & has been closed for the past several weeks while City crews have replaced aging surfaces and provided a face lift for the popular park.

The Key West Art Center was incorporated as a non-profit in 1960 and is devoted to the encouragement of local artists by furnishing them a central market place for their work. Peek into the past at Key West Art & Historical Society's upcoming vintage postcards exhibit at Custom House Museum
Tourists have been visiting Key West and the Florida Keys since the mid-1800s, and Key West Art & Historical Society has an extensive postcard collection which documents it. On Friday, May 10, from 6:00pm - 7:00pm in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, a new exhibit titled "Wish You Were Here: Postcards From Paradise" will showcase more than 13
0years' worth of vintage images taken from Key West Art & Historical Society's archives, a repository that contains over 2,000 collected and digitized postcards.
The exhibit will
feature aesthetically engaging cards in original, reproduction, and enlarged formats as well as information on the many facets of postcard collecting and their influence on social, economic, and architectural history.
"Postcards are like windows into the past, windows that convey glimpses of particular places, times, emotions, and sentiments," says Society Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. "Postcards representing geographic locations, such as the Florida Keys, served as modestly-priced, mass-produced means of communication, and were particularly prominent during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries."
While each card's written and pictorial content is different, each is a portal to the cultural and social values of the time in which they were written and sent.
"They are an exceptional source of social history because they reveal what was popular or seen as important in the region where the postcard was sold," says Convertito. "They can, in an ancestral sense, be thought of as the predecessor of today's social media sites such as Instagram - a filtered/enhanced image alongside personal sentiments."

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts supports all the arts, in all the Keys, all the time. The local arts agency launched its seventh annual Connections Project road show in Key Largo a few months ago and it has arrived in Key West at the spacious lobby at the Gato Building. The reception is
Friday, May 3rd from 5:30-7:30. The community is invited to visit the vibrant 24-foot mosaic mural created by local artists and art lovers. After connecting with the art, patrons can also collect art by making a $50 donation for one canvas or a $125 donation for three at the reception or online at
www.keysarts.com. Once the show has ended, donors receive a randomly selected piece of the mosaic in the mail. Each work includes an artist statement providing insight into the origin of the work and the artist's thoughts and inspiration. The Ocean is Calling! Reef Relief Summer Coral Camp Registration is Now Open.
Coral Camp 2019 Registration is Open! When school lets out, Coral Camp begins. Each fun-packed day, campers experience hands-on-learning, interactive games and outdoor activities. Activities include science and art projects in addition to field trips around Key West. Campers also experience four days of snorkeling: one day practicing their snorkeling skills at the beach, one day in the seagrass beds and sponge gardens, and two days snorkeling at the barrier reef.
Weekly sessions begin June 3th
and go through August 9th. Sessions are limited to 25 campers
per session. Camp is designed for 6-12 year olds. A limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify. Coral Camp runs Monday through Friday from 8:30am- 4:30pm. Camp fees are $225 per child per week or a discounted rate of $200 per child per week when registering for multiple weeks or siblings. Space is limited! Reserve a slot today!

As the season winds down, Frangipani introduces a couple of new artists who have recently joined the gallery with some unusual and interesting work. Maria Krikorian works in acrylics and resin to produce some geode like creations and waves of color. Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

On Thursday, May 9, 2019, from 6:00-7:00pm, Key West Art & Historical Society presents Alex Vega, Executive Director of the Key West Firehouse Museum, who will discuss "Fires that Forged Key West," including the Great Fire of 1886 at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
Vega is a retired second-generation firefighter, historian, writer, and author of the book "The History of Key West Firehouse No. 3," which will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

Key West Art & Historical Society ArtCamp! at Fort East Martello offers weekly camp sessions for children
Registration is open for this summer's ArtCamp! at Fort East Martello, a summer program for children ages 6-12 that celebrates Key West's rich artistic history and natural landscape over a series of ten, one-week sessions beginning June 3 and running through August 9. Each camp theme is designed to get children thinking, moving, and making:

Ancillary activities and excursions pertaining to specific sessions, including field trips to local museums and nearby beaches, parks, and gardens, highlight the abundant history and cultural assets of our islands while expanding students' knowledge of the local community. In addition to the weekly themed curriculum, campers also have the experience of exploring Fort East Martello, an enclosed Civil War-era fort stewarded by Key West Art & Historical Society, with time for natural, open-ended play, with outdoor play stations, water play, a dress-up area, giant blue building blocks and a Rigamajig from Imagination Playground.
The camp, in operation for over thirty years, marks Key West Art & Historical Society's commitment to youth programming and educational initiatives that aim to inspire a greater sense of place and historical understanding about our island home.
ArtCamp! runs from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday - Friday and is $200 per session for Society members, $225 for nonmembers. Included are all supplies and light snacks. Detailed descriptions of the ArtCamp! sessions along with registration information can be found at
