A Pulitzer winning event to benefit A Positive Step of Monroe County
Billy Davis, founder of A Positive Step of Monroe County, right, and Miki Yaras-Davis, left, get warmed up for a day of shopping to benefit APSMC. On Saturday, March 15, the Lilly Pulitzer shop at 600 Front Street in Key West will donate 10% of all sales to A Positive Step of Monroe County to help fund the Idle Hands Summer Youth Employment program, an APSMC program partially supported by and run in partnership with the City of Key West.
Each year, the City provides jobs for young people enrolled in A Positive Step's Idle Hands Summer Youth Employment Program. The City also provides $35,000.00 towards the approximately $70,000 payroll for the program's students and one staff person. APSMC must raise the remainder of the budget. So come to Lilly Pulitzer on March 15, celebrate the arrival of spring with some colorful new clothes, and know that you are supporting a great program for our island community's youth.

Letty Nowak's New Gallery : JAG Gallery 1075 Duval Street (Duval Mall) 305-407-6202
Opening Reception for Rick Worth & AD Tinkham's New Paintings
(Although the Reception has Past) : The Exhibition will be Up for Many Weeks
Intimate Key West vignettes and dramatic nautical vistas share the walls when Rick Worth and A.D. Tinkham open at Jag Gallery. "We are excited to start our season with Rick and A.D." said gallery owner Letty Nowak" They've both been making work here for several years" Though they share the same island, their visions of Key West are unique. Tinkham, who says that he feels most alive when on the water in life threatening storms, uses subtle values to capture the power and depth of untamed oceans. Worth incorporates the colorful history of Key West not only in his vivid portraits of local landscapes and vernacular architecture, but in the vintage roof tiles he often uses as canvas. Join both artists at JAG gallery, 1075 Duval St Space 23 6-8 pm For more information call or text 305 407 6202

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE 2020 THE TWILIGHT ZONE FEB 18-MARCH 14
"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!"
Always one of our most popular shows of any season, come enjoy an evening of quirky, out-of-the-ordinary short plays, populated with a host of top Key West actors.
FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DeLUNE MARCH 24-APRIL 18
A timeless love story of a waitress and a short order cook. Their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious interplay lights up this one night stand between two lonely people who long for more.
As Clair de Lune plays on the radio, Johnny woos the reluctant Frankie and we root for this odd couple to find their way to each other and out of their past disappointments. Terrence McNally was recently awarded the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Red Barn first produced this play in 1990 and is thrilled to honor Mr. McNally and our theatre's 40th Anniversary with another production of this beautiful play.

The College of the Florida Keys continues its 2020 VIP Series with "The Jewish Underground: Smuggling Refugees from Cuba to Key West." The presentation, led by local author and historian Arlo Haskell, is on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus.
Haskell will share the little-known story of thousands of Jewish immigrants who became refugees in Cuba in the 1920s when they were barred from entering the United States. Cuban authorities looked the other way as smugglers transported them to Key West, pitting them against powerful local officials who belonged to the Ku Klux Klan and inspiring Ernest Hemingway's novel "To Have and Have Not."
Haskell is an award-winning author, historian, literary organizer, and publisher. He is executive director of the Key West Literary Seminar, publisher of Sand Paper Press, and author of "The Jews of Key West: Smugglers, Cigar Makers, and Revolutionaries," which received the Florida Book Award's Gold Medal for Florida Nonfiction.
In its seventh season, the College's VIP Series invites the community to learn from the visions, ideas, and perspectives of speakers of local, regional, and national prominence. The 2020 season, sponsored by Centennial Bank, includes presentations that focus on timely and relevant topics.
Tickets are $5 at the door. Admission is free for students at CFK and Monroe County schools. For more information, call CFK at 305-296-9081 or visit www.fkcc.edu.

Bahama Village Music Program Director looks back 20 years and forward to March 29 Birthday Bash at Coffee Butler Amphitheater
On Sunday, March 29, 2020 from 12:00pm - 6:00pm, the Bahama Village Music Program invites the public to help them celebrate their 20
th
anniversary with a Birthday Bash at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater-a free, family-friendly day filled with music and performances by Key West's finest musicians and BVMP students, audience jam-alongs, an artisan market, a cash bar, food trucks, a silent auction, a kid's zone, the inaugural presentation of the Key West Music Hall of Fame, and of course, birthday cake.
Throughout the program's two decades, the Bahama Village Music Program has served the community through music, offering over 20,000 free lessons taught by more than a dozen student teachers, professional instructors, and dedicated volunteers to over 2,000 children who could not otherwise afford it.
"BVMP has always been my safe place," says
Program Director Kate Divoll, who began her studies at the then-new program at the age of 7 in 1999. "
I learned patience, humility, and the importance of practice here."
Since then, Divoll has watched the program grow from a storage room with three keyboards to a comprehensive music school with 200 students and two choir programs, two strings programs, a jazz ensemble, a ukulele orchestra, a steel pan band, a musical theatre program, music theory and songwriting classes, the "School of Rock" band, contemporary and Junkanoo dance, and a summer music camp-all of which she now oversees with Executive Director Katchen Duncan.
Divoll schedules and teaches lessons, oversees teenage mentors and their stipends, writes grants, and directs the overall implementation of the program. But just as important to her is tending to each child's social-emotional growth and thesense of community needed to help their self-esteem soar.
"I have given countless hugs, snacks, and pep talks to our students," she says. "The level of trust partnered with a completely free, student-driven music curriculum is something to behold."
Behold the magic of it on Sunday, March 29 at their 20
th
Birthday Bash as they celebrate this important program that has inspired children island-wide to discover the musician within and thank the donors, foundations, and community-members that have supported them over the years.
"We would not be celebrating our 20th year without the kindness and generosity of so many," says Divoll. "A whole-hearted thank you to all that have contributed. Here's to another 20 years!".

ENCORE FEATURES FROM THE CITY OF KEY WEST PLUS A NEW ARTICLE FROM ALYSON on Black History Month & Commissioner Lopez / Mayor Johnston
After a 34 career with the Key West Fire Department, Fire Chief Michael Davila was honored at last night's City Commission meeting where he was met with a standing ovation. City Manager Greg Veliz took the opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and commitment that went into such a successful career, not only the series of promotions with their increased levels of responsibility, but the mettle that made those promotions possible. He noted the nights away from family, the responsibility of leadership and of keeping the community safe.
"I've seen a lot of changes over the 34 years of my career, all positive," said Davila. "It's been my honor and privilege to lead such a professional group of guys and women."
Davila noted that he is most proud of attaining a Class One certification for the department, a rating that is not only rare, but brings Key West property owners lower insurance rates.
Commissioner Billy Wardlow - himself a retired Key West Fire Chief called Davila "my main man. Michael taught me a lot and I taught him. He did one hell of a job. Thank you for all you've done for the city."
Wardlow was a captain with the department when Davila came on board.
Veliz then introduced the City's new Fire Chief, Alan Averette, who has been with the department since 1998.
"I am humbled by the titled I'm being honored with," said Averette, "but more so by the caliber of people I'm about to represent. The men and women of the Key West Fire Department are class one and second to none."
In the photo by Alyson Crean : Commissioners Jimmy Weekley and Mary Lou Hoover, Mayor Teri Johnston, City Manager Greg Veliz, retiring Fire Chief Michael Davila, Commissioners Sam Kaufman, Clayton Lopez and Billy Wardlow.

Contractors began repaving the stretch of Simonton Street from Truman Avenue to Front Street. The project, which is expected to take about six months, will tackle one block at a time, repairing sidewalks, upgrading curb ramps, repaving and re-striping the road.
Work hours will be from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each block is expected to take two to three weeks to complete. There will be some closures on the affected blocks, but detour routes will be clearly marked. Because work is being conducted just one block at a time, traffic impacts are not expected to be cumbersome.
---------------
District VI City Commissioner Clayton Lopez and Mayor Teri Johnston were the guests today of Commander Valerie V. Littlefield at the Naval Hospital Branch Health Clinic Key West.
The gathering was a luncheon celebrating Black History Month, and Commissioner Lopez spoke about the unique way that black culture has woven the fabric of Key West.
The city boasts a diversity that was rare in the 19th Century. Key West had some of the first black elected and law enforcement officials in the state. He noted the black men who, as part of a city that was a union outpost during the Civil War, enlisted to fight the confederacy. And later, the group of Key Westers who, during WWII, joined an elite squadron of black Marines called the Montford Point Marines. In 1942, they were the first black men to serve in the Marines since the American Revolution.
Lopez talked about the strong faith-based community in Key West, including the Cornish Memorial AME Zion Church, whose founder, Sandy Cornish, was a freed slave and built the still-standing church out of the ribs of former slave ships.
"One of Key West's most famous homegrown successes," noted Lopez, "played a slave in many movies, taught Shirley Temple to dance, and was the most imitated black man ever."
That actor, Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry, was better known by his stage name Stepin Fetchit. Lopez noted that, though the Key West-born actor was sometimes frowned upon by activists, Perry broke down barriers that allowed future generations of black actors to flourish beyond bad stereotypes.
Commissioner Lopez concluded by acknowledging the service men and women who made up the audience.
"It doesn't matter what your political beliefs are," he said. "It doesn't matter, what your theological or personal philosophical beliefs are. What matters is that you care. Care enough to make a difference. You, who have chosen to serve are making the grandest contribution to our combined history."

Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

I'll be Updating the schedule Hopefully Next Week; Of course they have a very extensive and interesting Website..Please go to that for Great Info on ALL the Fascinating Concerts / Events They Have...

We Continue with the KWAHS Distinguished Speaker Series on March 5th. "U-Boats So Close to Home"
Tougias'
two-part multi-media offering features many historic photo slides including ones of the ships, images from both sea rescues and of the key people involved, maps of the action and examines the courage that emerged in many forms in each of the historic events.
"
This will be an edge-of-your-seat presentation," says Tougias. "By using slides, I'm able to transport the audience right into the events and give them a "you are there" feel. I even have a slide of
the
U
-
boat commander that sank the Heredia and the moment his particular
U-
boat was bombed
."
A prolific and versatile writer who has published 30 books in almost every category including history, young adult, humor, nature, and historical fiction, Tougias is best known for his survival-at-sea books which include "A Storm too Soon," "Rescue of the Bounty," "Fatal Forecast," and "The Finest Hours."
"I became interested in survival-at-sea when I learned about a sea rescue and tragedy off the coast of Massachusetts during the great Blizzard of 1978," he says. "I knew I had a great subject because a marine radio operator on land recorded every message from the boats in distress that night."
The result was his book "Ten Hours Until Dawn," which was later selected by the American Library Association as one of the top books of the year.
His passion for history and true survival stories prompted "U-boats So Close to Home," which he cowrote in 2013 with Boston Globe journalist Alison O'Leary, interviewing the boy (by then, 81) featured in the story and gathering source material.
"The research was incredibly exciting, especially finding the diary of the U-boat Commander who sank the ship the family was on," he says. "That way we were able to tell the story from both perspectives."
Tougias also gives inspirational presentations for business groups and colleges sharing what he has learned from survivors and rescuers about overcoming adversity, making sound decisions, and leadership. He will be on hand after the presentation to sign his books, all of which will be available for purchase.
Distinguished Speaker Series presentation tickets are $5 for KWAHS members, $10 for non-members, and are available at kwahs.org, click 'tickets." Early ticket purchase is recommended. Sponsored by the Helmerich Trust, Southernmost Beach Resort, and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. For more information, contact
