The College of the Florida Keys invites the community to celebrate the groundbreaking for its new Upper Keys Center.  A ceremony will be held at the site of the new building at Mile Marker 106.4 on the Overseas Highway in Key Largo on Friday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m.  The 2.12-acre property, which previously housed a "Shell World" store, has been cleared to prepare for construction of the 38,000-square-foot CFK facility.

The new Upper Keys Center, which is scheduled to open in August 2021, will replace the College's limited space held at Coral Shores High School and will allow the College to double its capacity to serve more than 300 students annually.  The College plans to expand five existing programs in the Upper Keys: nursing, emergency medical technician, paramedic, marine environmental technology, public safety (law enforcement and corrections academies), and apprenticeships.  In addition, the College plans to develop new programs.
The College was awarded a $16 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) last year to construct the new facility.  An additional $4 million is being raised from local sources.

Recreational and professional painters  are invited to participate in Key West Art & Historical Society's  Saturday, February 22, cash  prize  plein  air painting contestpart of the  multi-event   celebration held in Key West annually in honor of the Pulitzer  Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams, who took up painting in the later part of life.

In the spirit of this year's celebration theme, "The Women of Tennessee Williams," artists have the choice of three   local  venues associated with his  "The Rose Tattoo" character Serafina,  portrayed by actress Anna Magnani in the  locally shot  film: The Rose Tattoo House at 1421 Duncan Street, St. Paul's Church at 401 Duval Street, and the former Key West High School at 1300 White Street (now City Hall).

Artists supply their own painting materials and easels and can collect their stamped canvas/paper beginning at 8:30am   on February 22  at the Tennessee Williams Museum, 513 Truman Avenue.   Finished artwork  must  be  returned  to the  museum  by 4:00pm, and from 5:00-6:00pm, there will be an artists'  reception, open to the public.

Blind-judging   for the contest will be conducted by four arts community leaders, with first and second place winners in both the professional and recreational categories presented with  $200 and $100  cash prizes, respectively,  at a  March 26 Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration at the  museum, at which the artists are welcome to offer their paintings for sale.

Artists can register   and pay the $20 entry fee   at   KWAHS.ORG   (click 'Events')   by  February 21 or sign up the morning of February 22 at the Tennessee Williams Museum. Contact Cori  Convertito , Ph.D.,   at 305-295-6616 x 112 or   [email protected]  for more information.

On Monday, February 24th, the Friends of the Key West Library will present Ayse Papatya Bucak, a writer and professor at Florida Atlantic University.     The lecture  will take place at the Tropic Cinema on Eaton Street.  Admission to the lectures is free. The talk begins promptly at 6:00 p.m.
Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Bucak grew up in Havertown, Pennsylvania and attended Princeton, where she completed her bachelor's in English. She went on to attain her MFA in Creative Writing from Arizona State University.

The Trojan War Museum and Other Stories  was published in 2019 and is a collection of short stories that explores worlds that are both Eastern and Western, realistic and fantastical. Bucak dives headlong into fundamental questions about identity, gender, and power dynamics. Many of the stories in the collection feature girls or women struggling to find their place, their voice, their sense of self in the midst of people and circumstances that both encroach upon and call into doubt their very existence. Two of the stories included in this recent collection were recipients of O. Henry and Pushcart Prizes.
Bucak said in a 2014 essay, "My work is to see who you are and who I think you could become. To notice the slate grey night lit by a full moon half behind a cloud. To know what it is to want more from someone than they are willing to give. To see the shadows cast by your secrets."
Bucak's poetry and prose has appeared in One StoryGuernicaBombCreative NonfictionWitnessKenyon ReviewPrairie SchoonerThe PinchThe Iowa Review, and Brevity. She also serves as a contributing editor for Copper Nickeland and has been a resident at Studios of Key West, Willapa Bay AIR, Hedgebrook, Brush Creek, the Betsy Hotel, and the Millay Colony for the Arts.

Dear Tropic Cinema Members and Community,

It has been my privilege to serve on the Tropic Cinema's Board of Directors for six years and then as your Executive Director for the past 18 months. I came into the executive director role at a unique time in the Tropic's history, a time that required balancing the needs of our community in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma with navigating the seismic shifts in the film industry.

I had the opportunity to oversee the renovation and updating of the facilities, while expanding the scope and diversification of Tropic Cinema's special programming. I'm proud of the over 100 special events and screenings we programmed during my tenure, which were designed to deliver variety for the entire island community.

Having achieved these goals and having had the good fortune to be awarded a Knight Foundation Grant, I feel it is time for me to step aside to pursue my other creative projects in theater, film and photography. As the film industry continues to evolve there are a lot of challenges ahead, but I am confident that the Tropic will be able to meet these challenges and move forward stronger than ever.

Finally, I would like to thank the staff, volunteers, donors and members. The Tropic holds a unique and important place in the Key West community and none of it would be possible without your generosity, time and support.

I'll see you at the Tropic!

Michael Marrero

Mayor Johnston Establishes Historic Key West Cemetery Restoration Committee

Mayor Teri Johnston and City Manager Greg Veliz this morning were among a group of historians, residents and City staff taking a hard look at the Historic Key West Cemetery.
This fact-finding mission was the first step by a new committee convened by Mayor Johnston to look at restoring the cemetery while maintain its historic significance.
A recent study by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council showed that the cemetery is one of the most-visited sites by the more than 2 million tourists who come to Key West annually.
"Not only is this a popular site to visit for tourists," said Mayor Johnston, "but it is also is a sacred place for our residents of Key West."
The group set several top priorities, including the immediate repair of structures that cover gravesites, the removal of rubble, and the leveling of graves and tombstone. The ideas include using backfill of soil and grass to return to some of the graves to their original state by replacing shattered concrete and - in some cases -- asphalt.
City Manager Greg Veliz said he wants to keep as much of the historic appeal as possible while improving damaged areas and ensuring public safety.
The cemetery's new Sexton, Christopher Varela, said all efforts will be made to contact the families of the graves that need attention. The City will reach out through the mail and through newspaper publications before any work begins on a certain structure and gravesites.

------------------
Beginning Tuesday, February 18 th, contractors will begin repaving the stretch of Simonton Street from Truman Avenue to Front Street. The project, which is expected to take about six months, will tackle one block at a time, repairing sidewalks, upgrading curb ramps, repaving and re-striping the road.
Work hours will be from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each block is expected to take two to three weeks to complete. There will be some closures on the affected blocks, but detour routes will be clearly marked. Because work is being conducted just one block at a time, traffic impacts are not expected to be cumbersome.
---------------

The City of Key West wants to remind residents aware that they cannot block off parts of the public right of way for private parking. Now that season is getting into full swing, City officials have received complaints that some residents are posting signs or even using cones and barricades to reserve parking spaces along the city streets. The right of way is public property, and cannot be marked with private "No Parking," "No Trespassing," or other signs. Nor can this area be blocked with cones or other obstructions.
The City's Code Compliance and Parking Enforcement officers will be addressing this illegal use citywide in the coming weeks. Anyone who has tried to reserve city right of way for private use is warned to take down the signs or remove the blockage immediately. Cones or other illegal blockades will be removed.

Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations.
