The "It's for the Birds" fundraiser to benefit the Key West Wildlife Center is set for Sunday, February 23, 3 pm to 5:30 pm at the West Martello Towers. This annual event offers fabulous food, an amazing Silent Auction and raffles generously donated from a variety of local resorts, businesses and restaurants. The Key West Wildlife Center, located at 1801 White Street, is a non-profit organization providing rescue and rehabilitative care to wildlife from mile marker 0-30 in the Florida Keys. They are a rescue and rehabilitation facility operating as a trauma clinic and field hospital. Their main focus is rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife and returning them to the wild. Any businesses wishing to donate or participate should contact volunteer coordinator Janice Manari at 717-580-8333 or the Wildlife Center.

In addition to guest's opportunity to bid on great prizes, there will be entertainment by Jubal MD, as well as wine, beer and beverages.  The center's educational wildlife ambassador will be on hand to answer questions about the programs. Tickets are just $25 and available on line at http://bit.ly/ItsForTheBirds. New Date February 10 6:30PM

It's time to howl at the moon again with Southernmost Slow Ride! February Full Moon is known as the Snow Moon so let's dress in our Snowy best! We are meeting at the end of White Street Pier, by the Compass, at 6:30pm. The sun sets at 6:18pm if you want to arrive early. Come catch the sunset and howl at the moon with us or at least have fun riding and socializing. All ages and abilities are welcome! Meet us out at White Street Pier and we normally meet at the end of the pier. We start gathering at at 6:00pm and ride out at 6:30pm Routes are TBA.

Please bring, install, and use as many lights on your bike as possible. Regular bike lights, decorative bike lights, wheel lights, glow sticks, novelty light-up glasses and hats and ties and boas, and anything lights up or glows and is safe to ride with! If you have any bike-mounted music, you can bring that too. We will have tunes playing from a couple of our bikes. Don't have that stuff? You can still come and ride.

NOTE: Ride at your own risk. No road closures, no escorts, only informal marshaling-a mellow ride with friends you know and some you haven't met yet. We will "take the lane" and own the road at times, but we will also get in single file or pull over to allow backed-up cars to pass, so please follow the marshals and the general vibe of the group.

The College of the Florida Keys honored the career of W. Jean Mauk, Vice President of Finance and Administrative services, who retired last week after 24 years of service to the College.  On Tuesday, the CFK's District Board of Trustees presented a resolution of appreciate to Mauk at their monthly meeting, and on Friday, colleagues, board members, and friends gathered on the Key West Campus to celebrate her contributions to the College.
Mauk started her career at the College as the Controller in 1996 and was promoted to Dean of Finance and Administrative Services in 2006.  While she retired in 2007, she returned to the College in 2011 as the Vice President of Business and Administrative Services.  She also taught Financial Accounting at the College.  During her tenure, Mauk has ensured the College's strong financial standing.  She has overseen major upgrades in technology as well as the completion of several construction projects including Lagoon Landing residence hall, the Marine Technology building, and the recovery from Hurricane Irma.
"Her dedication, attention to detail, and knowledge has allowed the College to maintain a strong fiscal position and good facilities despite the lack of state funding to support our enterprise," said CFK President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra.  "We thank her for her exemplary leadership and wish her the best in her retirement."
-------------------

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay presented a $100K donation to CFK President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra yesterday. The donation will go toward constructing CFK's new Upper Keys Center in Key Largo, scheduled to open in August 2021. The 38,000 square foot building will include facilities dedicated to training future and current law enforcement and corrections officers through the College's Institute for Public Safety. The donation came from drug-related funds and not from taxpayer funds.

Recreational and professional painters  are invited to participate in Key West Art & Historical Society's  Saturday, February 22, cash  prize  plein  air painting contestpart of the  multi-event   celebration held in Key West annually in honor of the Pulitzer  Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams, who took up painting in the later part of life.

In the spirit of this year's celebration theme, "The Women of Tennessee Williams," artists have the choice of three   local  venues associated with his  "The Rose Tattoo" character Serafina,  portrayed by actress Anna Magnani in the  locally shot  film: The Rose Tattoo House at 1421 Duncan Street, St. Paul's Church at 401 Duval Street, and the former Key West High School at 1300 White Street (now City Hall).

Artists supply their own painting materials and easels and can collect their stamped canvas/paper beginning at 8:30am   on February 22  at the Tennessee Williams Museum, 513 Truman Avenue.   Finished artwork  must  be  returned  to the  museum  by 4:00pm, and from 5:00-6:00pm, there will be an artists'  reception, open to the public.

Blind-judging   for the contest will be conducted by four arts community leaders, with first and second place winners in both the professional and recreational categories presented with  $200 and $100  cash prizes, respectively,  at a  March 26 Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration at the  museum, at which the artists are welcome to offer their paintings for sale.

Artists can register   and pay the $20 entry fee   at   KWAHS.ORG   (click 'Events')   by  February 21 or sign up the morning of February 22 at the Tennessee Williams Museum. Contact Cori  Convertito , Ph.D.,   at 305-295-6616 x 112 or   [email protected]  for more information.

"Corpus" Curated by the Extremely Talented Alaen Ledesma Fernandez with the Backing of The Florida Keys Council of the Arts at the Roberto Russell Gallery at Ocean Sotheby's Int. Realty 81888 Overseas Hwy. Islamorada.

The Corpus collective exhibition brings together the work of five Cuban painters who focus their visual discourse on the human body.   From different expressions, the body is the protagonist of his works, and with this the inquiry about his particular rituals of representation and understanding of beauty.
Using figuration as an artistic expression and evoking a universe of individual symbols, they bring the viewer closer to their particular stories while proposing routes of inquiry about the human condition, the balance between pain and hope and the complexity of life experience.

The works of Capdevilla, Nodarse, Guzmán and the binomial Sandra and Enmanuel reveal five different ways of transcending the limits between the corporal and the spiritual, of externalizing the harmony between the internal sphere and the universal space, while seducing contemplation and  They encourage reflection.

The City of Key West wants to remind residents aware that they cannot block off parts of the public right of way for private parking. Now that season is getting into full swing, City officials have received complaints that some residents are posting signs or even using cones and barricades to reserve parking spaces along the city streets. The right of way is public property, and cannot be marked with private "No Parking," "No Trespassing," or other signs. Nor can this area be blocked with cones or other obstructions.
The City's Code Compliance and Parking Enforcement officers will be addressing this illegal use citywide in the coming weeks. Anyone who has tried to reserve city right of way for private use is warned to take down the signs or remove the blockage immediately. Cones or other illegal blockades will be removed.

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed February 8 th  as Elizabeth Bishop Day in honor of one of the city's most renowned poets.  Elizabeth Bishop lived in Key West in the 1930s and 1940s and found inspiration, support, and solace in its subtropical flora, fauna, culture, and in the variety of its people.  "Bishop's poetic style underwent a lasting transformation in response to Key West's unique environment, and she completed her first book, 'North & South' while living in Key West," reads the proclamation.  Bishop went on to become one of the most important American poets of the 20th century.  Bishop's former Key West home at 624 White Street has been acquired by Key West Literary Seminar and will be restored and preserved as it was when Bishop lived there.  Arlo Haskell, the executive director of the Key West Literary Seminar, accepted the proclamation.  "The poems Elizabeth Bishop wrote about Key West," he said, "keep this place fresh and interesting and lively."   He encouraged the community to come to the White Street house on Saturday, February 8 th  from noon until 2 p.m. for an open house.

Keys Kids Junior and Bahama Village Music Program Present "Wizard of Oz"

In celebration of the 80 th  anniversary of "Wizard of Oz," Bahama Village Music Program invites the public to evening performances presented by Keys Kids Jr. at the Key West High School auditorium, set for Thursday, February 13, Friday, February 14, and Saturday, February 15 at 7:30pm, and a Saturday matinee at 2:00pm. More than fifty Horace O'Bryant and home-schooled students will perform in the delightful, full-scale musical that they have rehearsed for since November.

Under the direction of HOB teacher Stephanie Manaher, musical director Nancy 3. Hoffman, choreographer Penny Leto, and set designers Garth and Katie Holtkamp, the children's character's come to life as they offer audiences delightful classics such as as "Over the Rainbow" and "Merry Old Land of Oz."

Due to a tremendous response to auditions, performances include a double cast of characters: Dorothy will be played by Kaira Valdez and Angelina Diaz, Alex Mansour as the Scarecrow, Olivia Mansour and Conner Freeman as the Tin Man, Jake Ferguson as the Cowardly Lion, Dianna Holliman and Detra Dor as Glinda, Zandrie Font and Lily Kaufman as the Wicked Witch, and Sebastian Jeanpierre as the Wizard. Young performers from Gerald Adams and Poinciana Elementary Schools will join HOB elementary students to star as the Munchkins in their enthusiastic version of "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead."

Since 2017, Bahama Village Music Program has offered the free musical theater program to local schools, allowing them to increase their outreach into the community and bring the gift of music to as many children as possible.

Tickets are available at bvmpkw.org and can also be purchased at the door. A silent auction and a concession stand will be available for all performances.  Sponsored by the Bahama Village Music Program and the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys. The below Site has Past and Current Issues of The Keys Blast from Ed Krane & Friends
Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.
