Here's Kirk Douglas as "Cactus" Jack Slade back in the 1979 western-comedy The Villain. It all starts with a bank robbery gone awry, Cactus Jack ends up busted and facing a hangman's noose until the corrupt bank owner offers him a job. All Jack has to do is steal a strongbox full of money to ensure a mining operation defaults on its loan, allowing our "friendly" banker to take over the mine for himself. What could go wrong... right?
Ms. Charming Jones (Ann-Margret) comes to town to collect the money and take it back and to ensure the money makes it back, she's got some muscle on her side, Handsome Stranger (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Who just so happens to be the toughest and strongest hero in the west.

We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents...'The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross' was the best. How could anyone not love this guy, his epic afro, and all his 'happy little trees'? For a half hour, Bob Ross, who was just the epitome of 'chill' would make these beautiful landscapes while talking viewers through the process. Ross just had this almost contagious calm about him and such an easy and approach to what would normally seem like complex oil painting techniques. The show ran from January 11, 1983 until May 17, 1994 and in this time, it won three Emmy Awards.

Here's a rare goodie! Santa Claus and Alice Cooper playing ping-pong together back in 1972! As if seeing him stripped of his usual horror-inspired attire wasn't strange enough, here he is, hanging with ol' Saint Nick.  The rock singer, songwriter, and actor with a  flair  for the dramatics   has had a career spanning over five decades. Aside from his distinctive raspy voice, Cooper is famous for pioneering his own brand of macabre theatrical rock. His stage shows features guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, deadly snakes, baby dolls, and dueling swords, among other morbid things. Cooper is widely considered "The Godfather of Shock Rock".

Here's a shot of Carol "Pinky" Tuscadero, (Roz Kelly) striking a pose next to her ride on Happy Days. Pinky was an old romantic flame of Fonzie's, and she appears in three episodes; "Fonzie Loves Pinky: Part 1", "Fonzie Loves Pinky: Part 2" and "Fonzie Loves Pinky: Part 3". O ver the course of the 'Pinky episodes', she taught Fonzie a valuable lesson, and that is, not to be sexist. Pinky helped Fonzie win a demolition derby challenge, she can fix cars,   and she rides a (pink) motorbike-which she can do tricks with.

The soft rock band, America was formed in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. They spent the rest of the decade achieving significant popularity after releasing a string of hit albums and singles. Their debut 1971 album, America, included the transatlantic hits "A Horse with No Name" and "I Need You". Followed by hits such as "Ventura Highway" Hat Trick, and "Muskrat Love". In 1975 they had a number one single with "Sister Golden Hair" alongside "Daisy Jane." Their compilation album, History: America's Greatest Hits, was released the same year and was certified multi-platinum in the United States and Australia.

Two Mules for Sister Sara is an American-Mexican western starring Shirley MacLaine and Clint Eastwood. In it, an American mercenary gets mixed up with a nun on the run and the two become good friends. Sister Sara is raising money to assist Mexican revolutionaries who are fighting the French.
It received (mostly) favorable reviews, for example, Roger Greenspun of the New York Times reported, "I'm not sure it is a great movie, but it is very good and it stays and grows on the mind the way only movies of exceptional narrative intelligence do

-------------------------------
We Now Continue with a Look Back at the 60's & 70's in Photos

The Rookies was a police procedural series that aired between 1972 until 1976. As could be predicted from the title, it follows the follows the exploits of three rookie cops. More specifically, the series centers around officers, Danko (Sam Melville), Webster (Georg Stanford), Gillis (Michael Ontkean), and their superior Lieutenant Ryker (Gerald S. O'Loughlin) at the Southern California Police Department. Kate Jackson played Registered Nurse Jill Danko, officer Danko's wife. The show depicted highly dramatized versions of police cases and often intertwined work with the officer's home lives. It was during the show's third season that a two-part episode (entitled "S.W.A.T.") aired on and it served as the pilot for the spin-off series S.W.A.T.
Here's a lovely shot of Linda Evanstad, or as she is professionally known, Linda Evans back in 1964. Joan Rivers once said about Evans. "She is one of the only people in the business I've never heard anything negative about." Which is pretty impressive because Rivers always had the gossip on everyone.
Evans first gained notoriety for playing Audra Barkley in the Western television series, The Big Valley, which ran from 1965 to 1969. Prior to that, she played guest roles in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Wagon Train, and Outlaws. She appeared in a slew of detective shows throughout the 1970s, such as The Rockford Files, Mannix, Harry O, Banacek, McCloud and McMillan & Wife.   In 1980 she co-starred in one of Steve McQueen's final films, the western Tom Horn and then  she landed the role of Krystle Carrington, in ABC's iconic soap opera Dynasty (from 1981 until 1989).

Here's a good one of Fonzie (Henry Winkler) and his steady girlfriend Ashley Pfister (Linda Purl) on Happy Days. Linda Purl actually played two different roles on Happy Days. Originally, she was Richie Cunningham's occasional girlfriend Gloria in season two of the show (1974). Then she returned to the series as Ashley Pfister, a divorcee, and mother of a 6 yr old girl, who ends up becoming Fonzie's steady girlfriend a full eight seasons later in (1982-1983).

Here's a behind the scenes look at the iconic superhero film Superman (1978) with Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve. Directed by Richard Donner and based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Superman depicts Superman's origin story, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, his years in the town of Smallville, and his life as (disguised) reporter Clark Kent, who develops a romance with Lois Lane.
At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film made with a budget of $55 million. It was met with critical and financial success, bringing in worldwide box-office earnings of $300 million dollars, making it the second-highest-grossing release of the year.
The children's fantasy television series, H.R. Pufnstuf is a children's television series was a live-action, life-sized-puppet program. There were seventeen episodes that originally broadcasted from September of 1969 to December of 1969. It was first ranked #22 and then later #27 on TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever. The series was pretty psychedelic and full of nods to the stoner-culture. In it, a young boy named Jimmy is trapped on the magical Living Island, where pretty much everything can talk and he's hounded by an evil witch. The evil Witchiepoo is always trying to steal Jimmy's magic talking golden flute, named Freddy, and with the help of the friendly dragon, H.R. Pufnstuf, Jimmy tries to escape and return home.

Tennessee Williams Museum Nominated for Tourism Award

The Tennessee Williams Museum at 513 Truman Avenue, the most recent addition to the four museums stewarded by the Key West Art & Historical Society, has been nominated for an internationally noteworthy award by the British Guild of Travel Writers in its "Best Wider World Tourism Project" category.
The museum "has been created with passion, enthusiasm and above all, a desire to honor a man whose contribution to his field was everything Hemingway made and then some," said Julia Hammond, a London-based travel writer who put forth the award nomination following a visit to Key West in March.

Founded and curated by Dennis Beaver in honor of the Pulitzer-prize winning literary icon who became a Key West resident in 1949, the exhibit has become a destination for Tennessee Williams enthusiasts and scholars. The museum's preserved and showcased collection of historic, archival materials help eternalize the importance of Williams' legacy as one of America's greatest 20th century playwrights and offers the largest collection of Tennessee Williams memorabilia and literary artifacts available to the public. A full roster of writing and painting contests, film forums and live theater performances are offered during the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration every March thanks, in part, to the support given by the Key West Art & Historical Society.

Museum displays include artist Jane Rohrschneider's recently completed model of the playwright's home at 1431 Duncan Street where he lived from 1949 until his death in 1983, first edition plays and books, images from the late local photographer Don Pinder, and original steps from the film adaptation of Williams' play "The Rose Tattoo" which was shot entirely in Key West.
"Williams gave back to the community that welcomed him without judgement and this comes across in the fondness that shines through every exhibit in this tiny museum," says Hammond. "This is an intimate tale told within an intimate venue."

Hammond cited the museum's value for money ($7 admission for adults) and the social impact it offers by championing a prominent member of the LBGTQ community, providing a poignant but not pushy "warts-and-all celebration of his life."
The award winner will be announced at a gala held at the Savoy Hotel in London on November 4.
The Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit on 513 Truman Avenue is open for self-guided tours 9:30am-4:30pm daily.   Curator tours are available upon request and with advance notice.  For more information, contact Key West Art & Historical Society at 305-295-6616 or visit  WWW.KWAHS.ORG .  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It Takes an Island.

"TRUET"KEY WEST FL OCT 13 Anything Involving Kyla Piscopink is a GREAT SHOW.

Kyla and Keith met in New Orleans in 2013, and decided that, together, they had a story to tell. Their early discussions yielded the DKW-staged dual duo show, "Cherry Red" and later, the March 2018 workshop performance of this duet production. This fall, they've streamlined their vision even further and are proud to present their newest collection of "True-ets!"

Here's Robert Conrad striking a pose as frontier secret agent James West in The Wild Wild West.  The Wild Wild West was a television series that was developed a western that also featured a number of fantasy elements. Because the Western genre was beginning to lose out to the spy genre, the combination of technologically advanced devices and the Victorian era time-frame gave The Wild Wild West quite the ratings winning edge. Technically, this show could be credited with origins of the steampunk subculture. Violence was a heavy issue  for  the series however, some episodes were exceptionally violent for the time and that was ultimately the show's downfall. Despite having very high ratings, the series was  cancelled  near the end of its fourth season.

The 1974 American sports comedy The Longest Yard, follows a former NFL player (Burt Reynolds) recruiting a group of prisoners and playing football against their guards. The film was shot on location at Georgia State Prison and it featured many real-life football players, including Green Bay Packers legend Ray Nitschke. The film was quite the success, critics and audiences seemed to enjoy it, and it earned $22 million in North America and has since, been remade three times.

The romantic comedy, The Owl and the Pussycat starred Barbra Streisand and George Segal. Streisand's role was that of the uneducated actress, model, and part-time prostitute, who is living with an aspiring writer (Segal) temporarily. Their obvious differences could easily work against them but over time they start to admire each other.
The film was an instant hit, grossing $23,681,338 (domestic), making it the 12th highest-grossing film of 1970. It then went on to gross $11,645,000 in rentals bring the grand total up to $35,326,338.

Actor John Saxon has worked on over 200 projects during a span of 6-years. He is really well known for his considerable work in the western and horror genres, as well as for his role as Roper in the 1973 film Enter the Dragon. One of his most iconic roles was that of Lt. Donald Thompson, the father of Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) in the 1984 slasher horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. In then in Wes Craven's New Nightmare where he played himself

Richard Lee Petty, nicknamed The King, is a former NASCAR driver who won the NASCAR Championship seven times! Statistically, he is the most accomplished driver in the history. He won a record 200 races during his career (the Daytona 500 a record seven times).  Petty was a second generation driver his father is Lee Petty, who won the first Daytona 500 back in 1959 and was a three-time NASCAR champion. Pictured here Is Richard Petty with his son Kyle, who is also a well-known NASCAR driver now too.

SALT Gallery features Sarah Plaia Davidson in October
For the month of October, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,  www.saltislandprovisions.com)  will feature "Atmospheric Tendencies," a new collection of serene oil paintings and block prints by local artist Sarah Plaia Davidson. To celebrate Sarah's new works,  SALT will be hosted an opening reception at the gallery Last Week.  The Oct. 15th Issue will have a Photo Feature from this Event.

Sarah has been visiting Key West since the 1990s and pulls a lot of her inspiration from the tropical landscape. "Well, first there is the water," she explains. "As they say, it soothes the savage beast and I am no exception. Secondly, the salt. Elementally, it removes what is not wanted. The salt is also a great conductor, so I find Key West to be quite magical in that way. Endless sky and water speak to me as an artist because my work organically moves toward the minimal. I love the soft palette, the soft ground plane. It's both empty and full at the same time."
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine, and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Sarah's work will remain on display until the end of October. FRINGE THEATER ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR 2018-19!

Fringe Theater announces dates for its second round of  Auditions for the upcoming 2018-19 season.  "We cast most of our mainstage season from our May auditions," explains Artistic Director Rebecca Tomlinson, "but there's still great opportunities to work with Fringe on upcoming shows!"

Auditions for August Wilson's The Piano Lesson will be held on Saturday, Oct 13 at 11am in the Meeting Room of the Frederick Douglass Community Center, located at 111 Olivia Street. "This is the story of a 1930s African American family who is struggling to determine the best way forward," says Wilhelmina Lopez Martin, the show's director. The show needs 5 men (ages 30-60), 2 women (ages 20-40), and 1 girl. No experience is necessary. No memorization is required as this play is presented as a reading. Auditions will include cold readings, which means scenes will be handed out at the auditions.  The show's performance dates are in Feb 14-16.

Auditions for a new musical, It's About Time, will be held on Saturday, Oct 13 at 1pm on the third floor of The Studios of Key West, located at 533 Eaton St. The play is written by local playwright Don Bearden and will be directed by Cameron Murray with musical direction by Vincent Zito.  Scenes and music will be provided for actors. The show needs 5 men (ages 30-60) and 4 women (ages 20-60).  The show's performance dates are April 24-27.

Additional auditions will be scheduled next month for Key West Characters, a collection of original 10 minute plays about Key West, which will be performed at the Oldest House in late February. Scripts for this show will be accepted through Oct 12. Soon after directors will be selected and audition dates announced. This show's performance dates are Feb 26 and 27.

"Luxury Graffiti" by Stephen Wilson 34 X 45 Mixed Media on Designer Boxes

Stephen Wilson is a mixed-media artist best known for his artistic exploration of the intersections between traditional craft and contemporary culture through blended use of handicraft techniques with modern technologies and pop iconography.  High fashion influences are quite prevalent in his work.  His redefinition of textile and embroidery-based art forms evokes questions regarding luxury consumerism and high-low art distinctions.

Key West Art & Historical Society Celebrates Fantasy Fest Altruism and the Candidates Behind it

Key West Art & Historical Society presents their 3rd annual "A Royal Retrospective" exhibit, October 11-29 in the lobby of the Custom House Museum. It is a look back at decades of Key West Fantasy Fest revelry, royalty and altruism via memorabilia, keepsakes, photographs, and posters, co-curated by Tennessee Williams Museum curator Dennis Beaver and Society curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D.

And one night only - Thursday, October 18 from 6pm-8pm - the exhibit becomes the site for an all-candidate "Royal Retrospective" party open to the public, with a cash bar and light appetizer fare, with 100% of the $10 admission benefitting AIDS Help of Monroe County. Former Fantasy Fest Kings and Queens are encouraged to attend.
Fantasy Fest events are sponsored in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.   For more information, contact curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at cconvertitofarrar@kwahs.orgor 305.295.6616 x112.  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

Five Fantasy Fest Fun Facts to Get the "Royal Retrospective"  Party Started

Here are a few fun facts to help to help get the Royal Retrospective party started:

1.      Flashback: Cue the Tumble(sea)weeds . Prior to 1979, if you stood on the intersection of Front and Duval Streets during what is now Fantasy Fest week, it resembled a ghost town.  Joe Liskza, the then-President of the Tourist Development Association had a simple idea that boomed into what is now the busiest, most lucrative week for the island: an adult extravaganza of creative costuming, parades, libations and excitement.

2.     The Naked Truth behind the Altruism.  Amid more than 50,000 painted and costumed party-goers that revel in Key West's streets, bars, and restaurants is one very altruistic Fantasy Fest King and Queen couple, crowned for raising awareness and much-needed funds for AIDS Help of Monroe County. "Candidates and their team of volunteers spend over eight weeks of their lives being ambassadors to AIDS Help," says Scott Prigden, Executive Director. It is a jam-packed two months of collaborating with local businesses to create and host special events in order to generate the candidate's personal message - and money that provides treatments, housing, prevention, and research for those in need in our community.

3.    A Multi-Million Dollar Idea .  Since 1989, AIDS Help of Monroe County has facilitated this very important community fundraiser, selecting candidates dedicated to the cause.  In the 29 years of Fantasy Fest campaigns, candidates have raised more than 4 million dollars dedicated to AIDS Help.  $4,354,315 to be exact.  See a tally of each year's fundraising efforts at the Custom House "Royal Retrospective" exhibit.

4.      Renegade Creativity.   Before a King or Queen candidate can even be considered, each must first raise two thousand dollars to show their commitment, which they can then use toward their campaign. Many of the koozies, t-shirts, bracelets, buttons, baubles, hats, fans, bumper stickers and other accoutrements that get their message out are showcased in the Society's exhibit.

5.      A Passion for Posters.   Over the years, artists have responded to a call for Fantasy Fest poster art with an abundance of inspirations, some of which will be on display at the Royal Retrospective.

The all-candidate AIDS Help fundraiser taking place Thursday, October 18 from 6pm-8pm aims to be "a reunion of sorts" says Convertito, and encourages former Kings and Queens to join the party, which features the exhibit, a cash bar, and light appetizers. For more information, visit KWAHS.org/exhibitions/royal-retrospective or contact curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at 305.295.6616 x112. Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series Guest Dr. Pamela Stephenson Connolly to present "The History, Culture, and Politics of BDSM"

Key West's 10-day long extravaganza of exuberant and sensual Fantasy Fest parties and parades create the foundation for Key West Art & Historical Society's adult-only, Distinguished Speaker Series presentation, "The History, Culture, and Politics of Bondage/Domination/Sadomasochism," by psychologist, sexologist and sex therapist Dr. Pamela Stephenson Connolly from 6:00PM-7:00PM on October 25 at Key West Theater, 512 Eaton Street.

Dr. Connolly will discuss her research on the subject and reveal fascinating facts about the nature and role of BDSM among couples. For adults over 21 only, this exciting lecture promotes a fun, utterly frank and positive view of BDSM. But there is also an important message: In gaining insights and an educated perspective into the beliefs, and mythologies regarding BDSM, one can better understand one's own sexual mysteries.

Tickets are $20.00 for Society members and $25 for non-members, and can be reserved at KWAHS.ORG (click on "Tickets" tab).

Key West residents can now purchase their new annual residential parking permit for Old Town. The new purple stickers will help ensure marked residential parking spaces are reserved for residents.

The new purple permits cost just $10 a year. They are available at the Monroe County Tax Assessor's office at the Harvey Government Center. Applicants will need to show proof of residency in Key West as well as a driver's license and vehicle registration in order to obtain the residential parking permit.

Old Town has over 1000 parking spaces marked as residential. Eligible vehicles will have exclusive rights to these spaces. The permits are available to residents, real estate property owners, military personnel stationed in Key West, seasonal residents who reside within the city for over four months of the year, and business vehicles affiliated with a business licensed in the city.

The parking permit does not in any way affect the 750 unmarked spaces or the 60 handicapped parking spaces in Old Town. Downtown workers who are not eligible for the permits are encouraged to explore the special monthly permit at the Park N Ride on Grinnell Street.

Today's home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to use that time wisely takes planning and practice.  The Key West Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) -- the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years -- to promote this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere," which works to educate the public about basic but essential ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire.
At Last week's City Commission meeting, Mayor Craig Cates proclaimed October 7 th through the 13 th as Fire Prevention Week.  The Key West Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Look. Listen. Learn." including annual visits of fire personnel and apparatus to schools for life safety education, as well as visits to the fire stations from day cares. The Key West Fire Department will also be offering free smoke alarms for homes that do not currently have alarms. These alarms were donated from Margaritaville Resort and Marina of Key West, and Strunk Ace Hardware.
"The Key West Fire Department would like to thank Margaritaville General Manager Diane Schmidt and Strunk Ace Hardware's Andy Strunk for their generous donations," said Fire Marshall Danny Blanco as he accepted the Mayor's proclamation.
NFPA statistics show that the number of U.S. home fires has been steadily declining over the past few decades. However, the death rate per 1000 home fires that are reported to fire departments was 10 percent higher in 2016 than in 1980.
"These numbers show that while we've made significant progress in teaching people how to prevent fires from happening, there's still much more work to do in terms of educating the public about how to protect themselves in the event of one," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA's vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. "This is particularly critical given the increased speed at which today's home fires grow and spread."
Carli also notes that although people feel safest in their home, it is also the place people are at greatest risk to fire, with four out of five U.S. fire deaths occurring at home. That over-confidence contributes to a complacency toward home escape planning and practice.
"Working in the fire service for many years, we know that people often make choices in fire situations that jeopardize their safety or even cost them their lives," said Blanco. "We need to do a better job of teaching people about the potentially life-saving difference escape planning and practice can make and motivating them to action."
While NFPA and the Key West Fire Department are focusing on home fires, these fire safety messages apply to virtually anywhere.
"Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go," said Blanco. "No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately."
Fire Marshal Blanco says this year's "Look. Listen. Learn." campaign highlights three steps people can take to help quickly and safely escape a fire:
Look  for places fire could start.  Listen  for the sound of the smoke alarm.V Learn  2 ways out of every room.
