PART 3 of 4 Highlighting the Artists of Cocco and Salem

The Final Hometown Q&A Forum for 2018

Part 4 of Many Parts / Weeks Featuring 350 Photos from the 60's & 70's
Pictured here is the leading cast members of Star Wars, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill, taking a break. While all three of these actors went on to have successful acting careers outside of the Star Wars films, they will always be remembered for their roles in what's arguably the best, epic space opera ever created.
George Lucas's 1977 "Star Wars" was the first film in a trilogy that later launched the franchise still turning to this day. The original storyline focuses on the Rebel Alliance who aims to destroy the Death Star, under the lead of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher).

A Brazilian pilot became famous for his selfies taken on and around planes. This one was taken with the beautiful Dubai palm in the background. He received a wealth of likes from unsuspecting folks who thought the photos were genuine. But the physics and mechanics of flight make it impossible to roll down the window and take a selfie in a plane. Decompression, death, and destruction would follow it. A lot of people had their bubble burst by this dose of reality.

Liz Taylor and Eddie Fisher, the couple who sparked what's known as Hollywood's great betrayal. Eddie Fisher was married to Liz Taylor's best friend Debbie Reynolds when they began their affair. The two actresses had been friends since they were just teenagers and Reynolds was the mother of Fisher's two children: Todd and Carrie Fisher.
It all started at the height of Reynolds' stardom, Taylor's husband Mike Todd was killed in a plane crash and Reynolds wanted to be there for her. Unfortunately, 'being there for her' turned into giving up her own husband. Eddie Fisher stepped in to comfort Taylor in her time of need and completely stepped out on Debbie, leaving her to raise their children alone (and he never sent her any money). All of Hollywood was stunned by Fisher and Taylor's betrayal, they were crucified by the press.
Taylor's reaction was simply, "You can't break up a happy marriage, I'm not taking anything away from Debbie Reynolds because she never really had it."
One of the most iconic comedic shows to date, Saturday Night Live became a huge hit with audiences through the combination of introducing young and budding talent as well as having well-written material that not only captures the audience's attention but it sure to keep it while stirring up controversy at every turn.
Throughout the decades SNL has remained a tremendous talent farm. With a run spanning over three decades, it's only natural that SNL is where so many brilliant comedy stars got their start. And with writers like Tina Fey, Adam Sandler, and Eddie Murphy (among many, many other seasoned comedians writing for the show, it's no wonder SNL is still going strong.

Born Barbara Jean Morehead, Barbara Eden had her big film debut back in 1956's "Back from Eternity." She did a series of unremarkable films before landing what would become her most memorable; Jeannie in "I Dream of Jeannie". The show was wildly popular, coming in second only to Bewitched for the span of five years. In addition to the 139 episodes she played as the beloved genie, she also donned a brunette wig to portray Jeannie's evil sister.
After Jeannie, Eden filmed the unaired pilot of "The Barbara Eden Show" and the pilot for "The Toy Game". Another popular role Eden played was that of Stella Johnson, in the movie Harper Valley P.T.A. The film was later adapted into a television series, also starring Eden.
October 1986, Eden published her autobiography, Barbara Eden: My Story in 1986 and then followed it up with her memoir, Jeannie Out of the Bottle in 2011.

Part 3 Airport Photos
his little girl was so excited to be at the airport, and she wrote her sign. She also wrote it in her language! It started off relatively well because you can distinguish the word welcome. The rest is a bit of a mystery. Luckily, someone asked her who she was there to welcome, and she informed them it was her grandparents. Not even an Egyptologist would make sense of those hieroglyphics. But I'm sure Grandma and Grandpa were so proud that they framed the sign!
They say it's better if you don't see what happens to your luggage after it disappears behind those plastic flaps when you check in. And here's the reason why. A baggage handler was taking his love of Tetris, Jenga, and a whole bunch of other games to a brand new level. This luggage tower defies the laws of physics and is impressive. Until you remember that it's your suitcase with chocolates in it right at the bottom of the cart!
You would think that all the noise and chaos at an airport would keep the critters away. But funnily enough, it doesn't. Animals on the runway can cause havoc for airplanes. They can cause accidents which may prove fatal. Many airports have traps and devices around them to keep animals away. One airport, however, tried a different approach. This is Piper the Border Collie. Piper's job is to patrol the perimeter of a Michigan airport to keep animals at bay.
Imagine this image was real, and you were on one of these airplanes. It looks like my commute home every evening. One wrong move would set off a domino effect of planes crashing and exploding. Talk about the traffic jam from hell. Fortunately, this is a Photoshopped image. It shows all the planes that departed from the LAX Airport on one day. It is a cleverly crafted image designed to show you the immense volume of traffic the airport carries.

We now Continue with a Look at the 60's & 70's in Photos
This classic Kodak moment was captured back in 1957 and is credited with being the birth of the 'side eye'. Apparently, this otherwise elegant event was organized by Paramount organized for Sophia Loren. Then in bounces Jayne Mansfield in a little less fabric than everyone else, and plops down at the guest of honor's table. Loren later confirmed that, yes, she was thinking exactly what it looks like she was thinking.
As Loren put it:  "Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I'm staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I'm so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow-BOOM!-and spill all over the table."

Having just formed the year before in 1960, this relatively small rock band had made significant headway by playing in the "underground club scene" and embarking on several mini-tours in and around Britain. They would go on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world.
"Beatlemania" was the best word to describe the intense fan frenzy that was directed towards this legendary band. Their fans weren't simply star struck, people (especially teen girls) were obsessed, they went completely mad over the band. The phenomenon began in 1963 and continued well beyond the group's past the group's break-up in the 1970s.
For The Beatles, it's not just about their sound. It's their message and their entire demeanor which is directly related to their era of origin. Perhaps it could be said about all artists that they are a product of their time, but this is especially true for "The Beatles" and it makes replicating them impossible.

Pictured here is a stunning Antonia Christina Basilotta, better known by her stage name Toni Basil. The singer-songwriter, actress, filmmaker, film director, choreographer, and dancer, best known for her multi-million-selling worldwide 1982 hit "Mickey", which reached No 1 in several countries.
Her choreography work includes American Graffiti (1973), The Rose (1979), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Something to Talk About (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997),[5] Legally Blonde (2001), Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), Charlie Wilson's War (2007), and The House Bunny (2008)

Mary Ann Mobley went from being Miss America in 1959, to undercover rescue missions as a trapeze artist named Crystal Walker in an episode of Mission Impossible in 1966.  In the episode "Old Man Out" Briggs & Co. pose as a small circus in efforts to rescue an elderly cardinal who has been taken prisoner by an Eastern European country. Briggs ends up recruiting former-flame (Crystal) who is also a trapeze artist. She accompanies Briggs and the IMF on their mission. Piracy Theories Still Surround it decades later.

More Photos from the 60's & 70's
Here is a great photo of Brigitte Bardot strumming on her guitar at a beach party in Saint-Tropez, back in 1967. The stunning beauty is best remembered for her modeling for obvious reasons but during the 1960s, Bardot tried her hand at music as well. She recorded hits with the French vocalist/songwriter/lounge-man Serge Gainsbourg and released her own albums like Brigitte Bardot Sings and Special Bardot.  Model, actress, activist, author, and singer... the multi-talented sex-symbol and fashion icon just had that je ne sais quoi that had even The Beatles idolizing her.
Pictured here is Elvis Presley, also known as 'The King' wandering a record store in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis moved to Memphis with his family when he was 13-years old, it's where he began his music career in 1954 and really came into his own.
Elvis fused country with rhythm and blues, he was an early popularizer of rockabilly. His first RCA single "Heartbreak Hotel" was released in January of 1965 and wasted no time in becoming a number-one hit in the US.  Since then Elvis has gone on to earn the largest presentation of gold and platinum record awards in history. The King has a total of 90 gold, 53 platinum, and 25 multi-platinum album awards under his massive belt buckle.

Here stands the ever-so-stunning actress Julie Christie, back in 1961. She was an icon of the "swinging London" era of the 1960s and has been honored considerably over the years for her masterful performances. She has won the Academy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.  Her list of film credits include titles such as, her breakthrough film Billy Liar (1963), Darling (1965), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and Doctor Zhivago which was the eighth highest-grossing film of all time (after adjustment for inflation).  She also starred in classics like Fahrenheit 451 (1966), Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Petulia (1968), McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Don't Look Now (1973), Shampoo (1975), and Heaven Can Wait (1978)

Here we have a family photo of Peter Fonda with his first wife Susan, son Justin and daughter Bridget back in 1969. Peter was no stranger to fame growing up, he is the son of Henry Fonda, and younger brother of Jane Fonda. He went on to become an icon of the counterculture of the 1960s with his indie hit Easy Rider.  The 1969 film was co-written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern. Fonda produced it and Hopper directed. In it, Fonda and Hopper star as two bikers who smuggling cocaine from Mexico to Los Angeles and then have to travel back with the drug money.  The notion of 'free love' is explored as is drug experimentation. Easy Rider became a landmark counterculture film, often referred to as a "touchstone for a generation" that "captured the national imagination. "

More AIRPORT PHOTOS
Penguins are so adorable, and we all love their little feet and the way they waddle about. These are Humboldt Penguins. They live on a small island off the coast of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They get endangered. These penguins were rescued and had to travel home. Apparently, no one could stand the idea of them flying in the airplane hold, so they got to travel with their human companions. And that meant being scanned like humans too. I wonder what security made of that!
The luggage carousel is generally the culmination of a long flight. There you stand, waiting for your suitcase to come out on the conveyor so you can grab it. It seems to move so slowly. You stand there, arm outstretched, ready to grab your suitcase. Only to realize it's not yours, it just looks like yours. One year, Spain-air gave some weary travelers something to smile about. Instead of sending out their suitcases straight away, they sent some gifts out first.
This is the beach right at the beginning of the runway at Maho Beach in Saint Martin. This beautiful Caribbean island has magnificent beaches, but this one is popular for a different reason. As airplanes come to land at the airport, they drop low over the beach. It's the perfect backdrop for a selfie, and many visitors take them. For others, it's a day spent dropping to the deck every time a plane passes overhead to avoid being sucked up into the jet engine.
Escalators and mechanized walkways are meant to speed up your movements around the airport. What's best is that you can continue to walk on them, getting you to your destination sooner. Unless that is, you get stuck behind someone with a death grip on the handle and a determination to hold up the traffic. This elderly lady is not letting go, and she doesn't care who's stuck behind her. It's one of the few perks of old age - you don't have to care what anyone thinks anymore.

Sheriff's Office Aviation Division targets aggressive driving

Sheriff Rick Ramsay recently ordered the agency's Aviation Division to address aggressive driving specifically along U.S. 1 during the 2018 motorcycle Poker Run.
Starting Friday, the Sheriff's Office launched its small helicopter along with a law enforcement officer. Note: This is not one of the Trauma Star medical emergency helicopters, which are separate aircraft.
The helicopter patrol focused on aggressive drivers in the Islamorada area and teamed up with marked and unmarked traffic enforcement cars strategically located throughout the area. The helicopter spotted violators and followed the violators while radioing ahead to waiting patrol cars. Those patrol cars would then conduct the traffic stop.
The effort led to eight drivers being stopped and ticketed - seven of those were passing in no-passing zones and one person drove past a stopped school bus.
Although traffic was light in comparison to recent years, Sheriff Ramsay and the Sheriff's Office is committed to curbing illegal activity. That includes those who don't follow traffic laws.
"Every stop we performed during this new operation could have prevented a potential crash and loss of life," Sheriff Ramsay said. "This is just one of multiple steps I am taking when it comes to stopping aggressive driving."

Dr. Madeline Pumariega, Chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS), presented a check on behalf of the FCS Foundation for $16,824 to the Florida Keys Community College (FKCC) Foundation last week.  The donation matches locally raised funds for scholarships for students in the nursing program as well as students who are the first in their families to attend college.

Of the total, $10,356 was provided by Florida Blue for nursing students, which matches donations to the FKCC Foundation from organizations such as the Hemingway Look-Alike Society, the Lower Keys Women's Club, and the American Legion Post 28.  Additionally, the Helios Education Foundation donated $987 and Bank of America contributed $5,481 to match amounts raised locally to support first-generation-in-college student scholarships. The primary local donor for such scholarships is FKCC President Emeritus Dr. William A. Seeker.  Dr. Seeker, the first in his family to earn a college degree, established the Sue and Albert Seeker First Generation in College Scholarship in 2007 in honor of his parents.

"The FKCC Foundation is very grateful to receive these scholarship donations that will help FKCC students achieve their academic and personal goals," said Dr. Frank Wood, FKCC Vice President of Advancement and the Executive Director of the FKCC Foundation.  "Scholarship awards allow students to focus on intellectual challenges rather than financial ones; they reaffirm dreams."

For more information about supporting the FKCC Foundation, contact Dr. Wood at 305-809-3287 or frank.wood@fkcc.edu.

Ph.D. candidate researches Stock Island's  Southernmost Pre-Columbian Archaeology Site, shares findings in Key West classrooms

For the past two years archaeologist Ryan Harke of Tampa, Florida, has been researching a little-known Pre-Columbian habitation on Stock Island. The Ph.D. candidate will be in Key West September 20-23 to continue his work and research and on Friday, September 21, will be sharing his methods and findings with Sugarloaf Elementary School 8 th grade students as well as with a group of HOB STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) students, courtesy of Key West Art & Historical Society.

The site that Harke is studying, located on Stock Island where the jail and its parking lot now exist, is one of the largest Pre-Columbian habitations known in the Keys, consisting of a black-earth mound. By studying the mound and a large midden of shells, sea-turtle bones, shellfish, and the now extinct Caribbean Monk seal and pygmy sperm whale remains found there, Harke can determine how Florida Keys Native Americans interacted with their island environments 800 years ago, including knowing what species they ate and what tools they used.

The Key West Police Department, with the help of a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation, is rolling out a program aimed at improving the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians in particularly accident-prone areas of the island.

Recent studies have shown that Key West, when compared to cities of equal size, ranks #4 for bicycle injuries and #4 for incidents involving pedestrians. Over the past several years, Key West has dropped in ranking from #1 to #4 for bicycle injuries -with the help of these FDOT grants.

The "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow" FDOT campaign is providing grant funding so that the Key West Police can step up enforcement in targeted areas to stop unsafe behavior or all road users: motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Officers will have an increased presence in all of the crosswalks on North Roosevelt Blvd., including those at the Triangle.

These High Visibility Enforcement Details are funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with FDOT.

The program is an effort to educate motorists as well as cyclist and pedestrians. The goal of the enforcement is to change behaviors. Anyone driving a vehicle needs to be aware of cyclists and respect their right to share the road. Motorists must be aware of and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks. Pedestrians must use crosswalks and be sure they are visible to drivers when walking at night. Cyclists need to obey the rules of the road. The goal of the grant is shows real reductions in injuries and fatalities by changing behaviors.

That means that bikes, when travelling in the road, must go with the flow of traffic, stop at all lights and stop signs, and use lights at night. It's also illegal for a bicyclist to pass a car on the right, especially through an intersection. Bicycles may ride on sidewalks, however they must yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal when passing someone on foot. Bikes and motorists must yield to pedestrians.

The Key West Police Department will be targeting these particular areas, as part of the grant, through May of 2019.
