The Keys Blast from Ed Krane & Friends
October 1, 2018

POW / MIA Recognition Day Ceremony took place Last Week; and we have a Few Photos to Share

After the release of their first album with their hit single, "I Got You, Babe," back in 1965, Sonny and Cher's popularity skyrocketed. The couple began making television appearances and even more performances. It didn't take long for the couple to get their own show.
The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was a variety show starring the famous couple and ran from August of 1971 until May of 1974. It was canceled do to the couple's divorce, though the duo reunited in 1976 until 1977 for The Sonny & Cher Show, which had an identical format to their old show.

Founded in 1978 by comedy actors Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as a musical sketch for Saturday Night Live, The Blues Brothers hit the big screen in 1980. Directed by John Landis, the classic film surrounds paroled convict Jake Blues and his brother Elwood as they seek redemption on the "mission from god." That "mission" being to reform their blues band and raise funds to save the Catholic orphanage where they grew up.
Pictured here is the cast of the sitcom Family Ties it aired 1982 to 1989. The series reflected the transition from the cultural liberalism of the 1960s and 1970s to the conservatism of the 1980s. It starred Michael J. Fox as a young young Republican (Alex P. Keaton) and his ex-hippie parents Steven and Elyse Keaton (portrayed by Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter). Even if you haven't seen it, you can guess what the family dynamics were like.
1971's A Clockwork Orange with Malcolm McDowell, certainly deserves its title of cult classic.  In this glimpse at futuristic England, Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his "Droogs" enjoy getting high and engaging in "a little of the old ultraviolence," before Alex gets jailed for murder. Alex is then subjected to experimental behavior modification technique in order to earn his freedom. They condition him to hate violence which makes him helpless after his release. Alex then learns what it's like to be the victim.
Here he is, in all his caped sparkling glory, The King, Elvis Presley. But why did he love jumpsuits so much?
It's known that Elvis found tuxedos too stuffy and most stage performers were wearing them. There are also rumors that while rehearsing in "normal clothes" he split his pants a few too many times and decided he needed something that provided a bit more room for movement. No matter the reason, he commissioned Bill Belew to make the now infamous "Elvis Jumpsuit" in all its flashy glory.
One thing about it that wasn't Elvis' idea, was the high collars, that was all Belew. High collars were more of a feminine thing at the time but Belew felt Elvis was the one man who could rock them and he was right

We Now Continue with "A Look Back at the 60's & 70's in Photos"
Pictured here are actress Barbara Hershey and actor David Carradine and their son, Free Carradine (who has changed his name to Tom). They met in 1969 while working on Heaven with a Gun and lived together until 1975. They had their son and appeared in multiple films together and even did a nude Playboy spread together, recreating some sex scenes from the film Boxcar Bertha.  Sadly their relationship fell apart in 1974, around the time Carradine was arrested for burglary arrest and had begun having an affair with Season Hubley.

Actress, author, and producer Sela Ann Ward had her breakthrough TV role as Teddy Reed in the drama series Sisters (1991-96), for which she received her first Prime time Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She received her second Prime time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Television Series Drama for the leading role of Lily Manning in series Once and Again (1999-2002). Ward later played Stacy Warner in the hit medical drama House, and starred as Jo Danville in CSI: NY (2010-2013).
Pictured here is actor, director, Clint Eastwood and bombshell Jayne Mansfield traveling together back in 1962. They two icons were the guest stars at San Francisco's Barbary Coast Fandango, an Old West-themed festival that was sponsored by The San Francisco Chronicle and California Historical Society. They were asked to judge their costume contest along with artist Lorrie Bunker, and supervisors Peter Tamaras and Charles Ertola.
Among the attractions at the event was that attendees could ride a Wells Fargo stagecoach that was robbed 15 times by Black Bart. They could pan for gold, or literally try to find a needle in a haystack to win a sewing machine. The last day of the Fandango, Mansfield was tasked with presenting a trophy to the winners of the fast draw competition
Johnny Bench was a catcher for the Cincinnati Reds from 1967 to 1983 and is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Bench is a 14-time All-Star selection and a two-time National League Most Valuable Player. He was also instrumental in six division title wins, four National League pennants, and two World Series championships. ESPN named him the greatest catcher in baseball history.

Penguins are so adorable, and we all love their little feet and the way they waddle about. These are Humboldt Penguins. They live on a small island off the coast of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They get endangered. These penguins were rescued and had to travel home. Apparently, no one could stand the idea of them flying in the airplane hold, so they got to travel with their human companions. And that meant being scanned like humans too. I wonder what security made of that!

English rhythm and blues and rock band, The Animals had their first number 1 hit in 1964 with "The House of the Rising Sun". It became their signature song, perfect for their gritty, bluesy sound. Their version is certainly the most popular, Eric Burdon revealed in an interview that he first heard the song while in a club in Newcastle, England, it was sung by folk singer Johnny Handle. Deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon also brought to life hits such as "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "I'm Crying" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".
This iconic moment in pop culture all began when actor/comedian Robin Williams squeezed into a Broncos cheering uniform back in November 1979 for the 37th episode of Mork & Mindy. In a white sequined mini-skirt, a pair of go-go boots, and an orange neckerchief, Williams pranced around in front of a crowd of around 74,000 people.
Even though it was a stunt for the show, technically, in doing so, Williams became the first male Broncos cheerleader in history. With Robins sparkling on the sidelines, the Broncos were given all the motivation beat the Patriots 45-10
Pictured here is Lawrence Richard "Larry" Csonka, former professional football fullback. After highschool and then college ball, Csonka was the No. 1 pick by the American Football League's Miami Dolphins in the 1968 Common Draft.
He signed a three-year contract but his career off to a shaky start. It was only the fifth game of the 1968 season, vs. Buffalo, when he suffered a concussion and spent two days in the hospital. Just three weeks later, he suffered yet another concussion, On top of that, he also had a ruptured eardrum and a broken nose. He missed three games in 1968 and then three more in 1969.
But he recovered and went on to a perfect season with the Miami Dolphins in 1972 and won Super Bowl championships in 1972 and 1973. He was inducted to both the College Football Hall of Fame (1989) and Pro Football Hall of Fame (1987).
While Ann Jillian is best known for her role as the vampy Cassie Cranston on It's a Living, she has also appeared in more than 25 films, mostly for television. Her performance in the 80's series however, did bring her into national prominence and elevated Jillian to sex symbol status. The sitcom only aired for two seasons, ABC cancelled it due to low ratings and it was then sold into syndication (where it did surprisingly well).
Aside from It's a Living, she portrayed Mae West in a 1982 made-for-television film and was nominated for a lead actress Emmy and Golden Globe for her performance. In 1983, she appeared in Mr. Mom with Michael Keaton and Teri Garr. That same year, she also appeared in the miniseries Malibu, which starred Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint and James Coburn. Then she landed her own sitcom, Jennifer Slept Here, in which she played a ghost in a variation on The Ghost & Mrs. Muir.

SALT Gallery features Sarah Plaia Davidson in October
For the month of October, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,  www.saltislandprovisions.com)  will feature "Atmospheric Tendencies," a new collection of serene oil paintings and block prints by local artist Sarah Plaia Davidson. To celebrate Sarah's new works,  SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5th.

Sarah has been visiting Key West since the 1990s and pulls a lot of her inspiration from the tropical landscape. "Well, first there is the water," she explains. "As they say, it soothes the savage beast and I am no exception. Secondly, the salt. Elementally, it removes what is not wanted. The salt is also a great conductor, so I find Key West to be quite magical in that way. Endless sky and water speak to me as an artist because my work organically moves toward the minimal. I love the soft palette, the soft ground plane. It's both empty and full at the same time."
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine, and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Sarah's work will remain on display until the end of October. We're looking for short plays about Key West, Stock Island, and Lower Keys folks -- historical, contemporary, hearsay, (maybe) even the stuff legends are built on. Our ideal length is 10 minutes (but that doesn't mean that a 5 minute monologue wouldn't work). Our goal is to capture and tell the tales of our Keys history. A bloom of the Florida red tide organism,
Karenia brevis, persists in Southwest Florida and extends along ~130 miles of coastline, from northern Pinellas to southern Lee counties, and extends offshore (10 miles or more). A patchy bloom of
K. brevis also continues in Northwest Florida. Additional details are provided below.
Over the past week in Southwest Florida, K. brevis concentrations generally decreased in areas of Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and Collier counties, creating patchier bloom conditions along the coast. Observations of >1,000,000 K. brevis cells per liter ("high" concentrations) occurred in Manatee, Sarasota, and Lee counties and >10 miles offshore of Hillsborough County, but at fewer sites relative to last week. In Northwest Florida, K. brevis was observed in or offshore of Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Pasco counties, with up to "medium" concentrations observed in Bay and Gulf counties. Relative to last week, cell counts increased in areas of Bay County and decreased in Okaloosa County.
In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background to medium concentrations in or offshore of Pinellas County, low to high concentrations offshore of Hillsborough County, background to high concentrations in Manatee County, background to high concentrations in or offshore of Sarasota County, background to medium concentrations in Charlotte County, background to high concentrations in or offshore of Lee County, and low concentrations in Collier County. In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at very low concentrations offshore of Walton County, low to medium concentrations in Bay County, background to medium concentrations in Gulf County, and background to very low concentrations in or offshore of Pasco County.

CALLING FOR SHORT SCRIPTS OF SHORT PLAYS!

Fringe will produce selected plays as part of our upcoming 2018-19 season.

Submission Ends Oct. 18

"Luxury Graffiti" by Stephen Wilson 34 X 45 Mixed Media on Designer Boxes

Stephen Wilson is a mixed-media artist best known for his artistic exploration of the intersections between traditional craft and contemporary culture through blended use of handicraft techniques with modern technologies and pop iconography.  High fashion influences are quite prevalent in his work.  His redefinition of textile and embroidery-based art forms evokes questions regarding luxury consumerism and high-low art distinctions.

The Key West City Commission, during the recent meeting, has proclaimed September as National Suicide Prevention Month.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United Sates and is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 to 34.

In 2017, Florida experienced 3187 suicide deaths; twenty occurred in Monroe County. In 2018, there has been a rise in the number of suicide deaths in the county.
"The stigma associated with mental health conditions and suicide works against prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from seeking lifesaving help," reads the proclamation. "Organizations such as The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, through research education, advocacy and resources for those who have lost or struggle."
