What I Learned and Knew from Past Years : The Keys are in Serious Trouble. Tuesday, December 12
th
marks the last day for public comment on FPL's request to put 2 new nuclear reactors at Turkey Point. It is important for the public to speak up because FPL has not maintained the nuclear reactor it already has, resulting in an underground plume of saltwater laced with ammonia, phosphorus, nitrogen and tritium that has been steadily approaching the Florida Keys only aquifer and Biscayne Bay for decades. The plume is now 10 miles away and the State of Florida recently ordered FPL to fix the problems. FPL denies wrong doing and is challenging a US Court ruling that says they cannot dismiss the Clean Water Act lawsuit being brought against it by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Tropical Audubon Society. The case at hand to comment on is whether FPL can pass on the ~$200 million cost of clean up to its customers. Email your opinion to

Paula Tishok prepares to peddle the streets of Key West Wednesday night on her festively adorned hammerhead shark bike, made from recycled materials and paper mache. She and her toothy pal were among a record 920 riders led by Santa and Mrs. Claus as part of the annual Wesley House Family Services Lighted Bike Ride toy drive for children, one of many events occurring during the Key West Holiday Fest, which is presented in part by the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys & Key West and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. We will be offering native trees, shrubs and vines for sale in the Nursery of The Key West Tropical Forest, 5210 College Road on Stock Island Saturday, December 16th, from 9 am to 12 pm. Choose from over 1,500 plants and 150 species of butterfly and bird attracting plants propagated by the volunteers in sizes from one-gallon to 30-gallon pots. The community is invited to attend a traditional Menorah lighting ceremony hosted by the City of Key West at Bayview Park, Thursday, December 14, from 5:30-6:30pm, with blessings offered by Rabbi Shimon Dudai from Congregation B'Nai Zion and Rabbi Jacob Zucker from Chabad of the Florida Keys. Conducted just before sunset, the lighting signals the beginning of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. The Lighting of the Menorah is one of many celebrations that occur during the island-wide Key West Holiday Fest,

Florida Keys Community College launched its first bachelor's degree program in January 2017. The much-anticipated new degree, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management (BAS-SM), is the first and only public, on-campus baccalaureate degree option in the Keys.
The BAS-SM program includes coursework in management, finance, marketing, human resources, and leadership. It also includes field experience in supervision and management settings to enable students to integrate theory with practice. The bachelor's degree builds upon associate degrees already offered at FKCC; students must complete an associate degree or equivalent prior to applying to the bachelor's degree program.

SALT Gallery Presented Karen Luknis' "Mystical Entities": That Opened Reception Dec. 1
For the month of December, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,
will feature "Mystical Entities", a new collection of unique mixed media sculptures by local artist and Captain Karen Luknis.
Karen is a self-taught artist who has lived in Key West since 1990. In 2014, she was the First Place Winner in Mixed Media at "From a Woman's Hand," a juried showing at the Frangipani Gallery in Key West. Karen was also the recipient of an artist grant from The Ann McKee Artist Foundation in 2015. After the success of her Ann McKee show at The Studios of Key West, the Customs House Museum in Key West added one of Karen's pieces to their permanent collection - a great honor for an artist living and working in Key West.
Karen's mixed media sculptures are made with vintage tin games, industrial wooden molds, doll heads and parts from the '30s and '40s, wooden cheese boxes, mirrors, and various metal and wood objects. "I like the look and feel of vintage objects," she describes. "They are rugged and show wear and tear from being in existence for so long. Their imperfections reveal an inner beauty that cannot be contrived or duplicated - the look only comes from being real. They have, like myself, stood the test of time."
Karen's work is a whimsical collection of vintage artifacts and ephemera combined and arranged artfully, each with a unique character of its own. "My artwork is a metaphorical representation of my inner and outer life experiences," Karen says.
"Karen's works are dark, deep, whimsical, and fun - everything we look for in the art we exhibit at SALT," says gallery owner Laura Richardson. "They really make you confront the concept of time in a way that forces you to reflect nostalgically on your own memories. There is a commonality to Karen's work that allows the viewer not only insight into Karen's thought process but also allows them to see glimpses of herself in each piece. We're very excited to have Karen show at SALT!"
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine, and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Judi's work will remain on display until Dec. 31

Key West Art & Historical Society presents "Key West Collects," an exhibit of unusual and wonderful collections of knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, tchotchkes, artwork and other objects collected by Key West/Florida Keys residents. Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series guest Craig Pittman to share weird and wonderful Florida stories at Tropic Cinema
On Thursday, December 14 at 6:00pm, Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Distinguished Speaker Series guest and journalist Craig Pittman at the Tropic Cinema where he is to present selections from "Oh, Florida! How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country," a book that recently won the gold medal for Florida non-fiction from the Florida Book Awards.
The Tampa Bay Times environmental journalist and author of four books is a native Floridian with a bevy of top-tier reporting awards and a resume of newspaper beats that include "quite a few natural disasters, including hurricanes, wildfires, and the Florida Legislature."

Get into the holiday spirit at Key West Art & Historical Society's Holiday Concert & Bazaar on Thursday, December 21st from 5PM to 9PM, located on the sweeping historic porch and promenade of the Custom House Museum.
The celebration will feature Key West's finest artisans, musicians and choirs, along with a spectacular holiday light show presented by Key West High School's 'Conch 5 Studios' students, with proceeds to benefit the Bahama Village Music Program & Society educational programs.

It's time to deck the halls, but it's also a season where fire can be a threat Key West Fire Chief Michael Davila wants to remind the community to be alert for possible fire hazards that can sneak into our homes over the holidays. Space heaters, candles and dry Christmas trees are just some of the potentially dangerous additions to our homes this time of year.
Each year, lives are lost and homes destroyed because of unsafe use of heaters. The following are some tips to ensure you don't become a statistic:
- Never use ovens, ranges or grills as heating devices
- Install carbon monoxide detectors
- Keep all heating devices at least 36 inches away from other objects, including walls and furniture
- Never use an extension cord with a space heater, and never leave it unattended
- Keep candles at least one foot away from anything flammable and never leave one unattended
- Be sure your smoke alarm is tested monthly
- Use an artificial tree, or be sure your real one is fresh and keep it watered
- Use safe lights, check cords for wear, and don't use more than three strands on one extension cord
- Keep candles a long, safe distance from the tree
- Do not allow children to handle the lights
- Never use indoor extension cords out of doors
- Unplug the lights before changing bulbs
Finally, even cooking can be hazardous if we don't follow a few simple steps:
- Do not leave a stove unattended
- Keep saucepan handles turned away from the front of the stove so that children cannot pull them down
- If you deep fry a turkey, be extra careful; do not use the deep fryer under a deck and be sure to keep children away from that vat of hot oil. This is a potential dangerous means of cooking, so be fully aware of the hazards before you start.

Since we had a lot of blue on the building to begin with, the tarps on there now kind of blend in and haven't been noticed by many in the community. We were hoping that some of your many followers might be inclined to help us out.
