27th Annual Schooner Wharf Bar & Galley Lighted Boat Parade Set to Dazzle
Saturday December 9, festively illuminated watercraft, including classic schooners, fishing and pleasure crafts, kayaks and dinghies will display their dazzle in the 27th annual Schooner Wharf Bar & Galley Lighted Boat Parade. The boats begin parading at 8 p.m., but arrive at the Key West Bight Marina at the Historic Seaport early in order to stroll through the magical beauty of the Key West Harbor Walk of Lights with its array of shops, restaurants and watering-holes, charmingly decorated for the holidays. At 6 p.m., catch the Gerald Adams Elementary School Steel Your Heart Band as they perform holiday tunes on the Schooner Wharf stage, followed by more live music by the Cayo Ritmo Band playing classic holiday tunes mixed with island dance rhythms of the Caribbean.
The lighted boat parade is one of multiple events that take place during the annual Key West Holiday Fest, an island-wide celebration presented in part by the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and the Monroe Country Tourist Development Council that continues through December 31. We Continue with the Artists of Frangipani
New artists joined Frangipani this summer including Sharon Wells, Gabrielle Wilson and Kerry Hoeppner. Sharon has some new watercolors, Gabrielle's chickens are charming and you must see Kerry's coconut sea creatures. Then there is new work from your favorites such as David Scott Meier, Deborah Moore, Deb Kik and Susann D'Antonio, new jewelry from Lois Songer and Lainie Davia and plenty of fun ceramics from Sandy Sun.
Finally, have a sneak peek at Fran Decker's new series of broken shell paintings, "This Once Was Home." This series was inspired by Hurricane Katrina and was ironically completed just days before Irma came and destroyed so many homes here in Monroe County.

The Key West Garden Club's December general membership meeting will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 1:30 pm at the Garden in the Fort West Martello on Atlantic Blvd. in Key West. The public is welcome to join us.
This meeting will be "A Garden Celebration". The volunteers and staff of the Garden Club want to celebrate the recovery of the garden after the impact of Hurricane Irma. We will have an informal atmosphere in the garden with John Harris of Earth Advisors, Sharon Lieberman our resident succulent expert, and the wreath making skills of the floral design group sharing their expertise just in time for the holidays.

SALT Gallery Presented Karen Luknis' "Mystical Entities": That Opened Reception Dec. 1
For the month of December, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,
will feature "Mystical Entities", a new collection of unique mixed media sculptures by local artist and Captain Karen Luknis.
Karen is a self-taught artist who has lived in Key West since 1990. In 2014, she was the First Place Winner in Mixed Media at "From a Woman's Hand," a juried showing at the Frangipani Gallery in Key West. Karen was also the recipient of an artist grant from The Ann McKee Artist Foundation in 2015. After the success of her Ann McKee show at The Studios of Key West, the Customs House Museum in Key West added one of Karen's pieces to their permanent collection - a great honor for an artist living and working in Key West.
Karen's mixed media sculptures are made with vintage tin games, industrial wooden molds, doll heads and parts from the '30s and '40s, wooden cheese boxes, mirrors, and various metal and wood objects. "I like the look and feel of vintage objects," she describes. "They are rugged and show wear and tear from being in existence for so long. Their imperfections reveal an inner beauty that cannot be contrived or duplicated - the look only comes from being real. They have, like myself, stood the test of time."
Karen's work is a whimsical collection of vintage artifacts and ephemera combined and arranged artfully, each with a unique character of its own. "My artwork is a metaphorical representation of my inner and outer life experiences," Karen says.
"Karen's works are dark, deep, whimsical, and fun - everything we look for in the art we exhibit at SALT," says gallery owner Laura Richardson. "They really make you confront the concept of time in a way that forces you to reflect nostalgically on your own memories. There is a commonality to Karen's work that allows the viewer not only insight into Karen's thought process but also allows them to see glimpses of herself in each piece. We're very excited to have Karen show at SALT!"
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine, and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Judi's work will remain on display until Dec. 31

Key West Naval Air Station centennial to be celebrated at Custom House Museum
Key West Art & Historical Society hosts Naval Air Station Key West's centennial celebration on Thursday, December 7, from 5:00-8:00pm at the Custom House Museum, with a special exhibit and reception kicked off with opening remarks by Commanding Officer Capt. Bobby Baker promptly at 5:00pm.
The public is invited, with a special call to active and retired military, who are encouraged to wear their uniforms to be photographed in front of Seward Johnson's sculpture, "Embracing Peace," a 25-foot tall bronze rendition of the iconic picture of a sailor kissing a nurse at the end of World War II.
"Our armed services are crucial to our country, and in celebrating the centenary of naval aviation in Key West, we have recognized the symbiotic relationship enjoyed by the Navy and Florida Keys community," says Society Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D.
The special exhibit focuses on the region's naval aviation, a natural complement to the museum's current "The Navy in Key West" exhibit of unique images, artifacts, uniforms, military memorabilia, and interactive displays about Key West's maritime past.
"A number of our museum visitors actually served in Key West during various periods, including World War II, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Cold War," says Convertito. "Engaging with them and hearing their stories has made this extra special."
Both the Naval Air Station centennial exhibit and the landmark "The Navy in Key West"exhibit run until the year's end.

Key West Art & Historical Society exhibits Florida Keys residents' curious collections at the Custom House Museum
Key West Art & Historical Society presents "Key West Collects," an exhibit of unusual and wonderful collections of knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, tchotchkes, artwork and other objects collected by Key West/Florida Keys residents, with a special reception on December 8, 2017, from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
The unique exhibit offers something of interest for everyone "no matter what their age range, nationality or education level," says Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. Objects were selected from an "overwhelming response" to this spring's call for collections. The display features a diverse array including WWI-era sheet music, opium pipes, pop-up books, Native American stone animal fetishes, pre-Columbian ceramics and textiles, champagne flutes and many other unusual items.
"Key West Collects" will be the third exhibit with that name, created several years ago by The Society with the intent of engaging the local community while showcasing their cultural diversity.
"Florida Keys residents are interested in so many facets of culture, history and the arts," says Convertito. "Displaying a small representation of their interests allows us to
generate conversation amongst our visitors."
A favorite among the community and The Society alike, "Key West Collects" gives the community an opportunity to "take ownership of The Society's exhibits," says Convertito. "No doubt

Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series guest Craig Pittman to share weird and wonderful Florida stories at Tropic Cinema
On Thursday, December 14 at 6:00pm, Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Distinguished Speaker Series guest and journalist Craig Pittman at the Tropic Cinema where he is to present selections from "Oh, Florida! How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country," a book that recently won the gold medal for Florida non-fiction from the Florida Book Awards.
The Tampa Bay Times environmental journalist and author of four books is a native Floridian with a bevy of top-tier reporting awards and a resume of newspaper beats that include "quite a few natural disasters, including hurricanes, wildfires, and the Florida Legislature."

It's time to deck the halls, but it's also a season where fire can be a threat Key West Fire Chief Michael Davila wants to remind the community to be alert for possible fire hazards that can sneak into our homes over the holidays. Space heaters, candles and dry Christmas trees are just some of the potentially dangerous additions to our homes this time of year.
Each year, lives are lost and homes destroyed because of unsafe use of heaters. The following are some tips to ensure you don't become a statistic:
- Never use ovens, ranges or grills as heating devices
- Install carbon monoxide detectors
- Keep all heating devices at least 36 inches away from other objects, including walls and furniture
- Never use an extension cord with a space heater, and never leave it unattended
- Keep candles at least one foot away from anything flammable and never leave one unattended
- Be sure your smoke alarm is tested monthly
- Use an artificial tree, or be sure your real one is fresh and keep it watered
- Use safe lights, check cords for wear, and don't use more than three strands on one extension cord
- Keep candles a long, safe distance from the tree
- Do not allow children to handle the lights
- Never use indoor extension cords out of doors
- Unplug the lights before changing bulbs
Finally, even cooking can be hazardous if we don't follow a few simple steps:
- Do not leave a stove unattended
- Keep saucepan handles turned away from the front of the stove so that children cannot pull them down
- If you deep fry a turkey, be extra careful; do not use the deep fryer under a deck and be sure to keep children away from that vat of hot oil. This is a potential dangerous means of cooking, so be fully aware of the hazards before you start.

Imporatant Message from your QuarterMaster
Don't know if you are aware, but our Post sustained major damage from IRMA and will be closed for the foreseeable future. We are currently doing the "insurance and contractor dance" and have begun soliciting support to help offset the expenses of both repairs and paying all our reoccurring monthly expenses without the benefit of income.

Since we had a lot of blue on the building to begin with, the tarps on there now kind of blend in and haven't been noticed by many in the community. We were hoping that some of your many followers might be inclined to help us out.
