Florida Keys Community College's student ceramics club Mud-Pi will hold its annual fund-raising event on Friday, February 19 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the Key West Campus around the Jay Gogin "Essence of Life" Memorial Fountain. The party will feature fine food and drinks, live music by the Marty Stonely Band, and art created by FKCC students. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $30 at

For more than 20 years, the talented students of Mud-Pi have generously created dozens of ornate ceramic wall murals and garden fountains that grace many locations in the Keys and provide the College's Key West Campus its signature aesthetic. The department also hosts young students-elementary through high school grades-as well as special needs groups to introduce them to the fine art of pottery.

ext 3 Performance 2/14 : Eroica Trio, 2/28 Badke String Quartet, and 3/13 Axiom Brass Quintet. Due to space constraints their website has greater detail)
The winter heats up when the Eroica Trio breezes into town on February 14. Whether playing the great standards of the piano trio repertoire or daring contemporary works, the three young women who make up this celebrated string ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. The New York Times writes, "They play chamber music for the concert hall. There is an edge of the seat intensity to every note they produce". The Trio won the prestigious Naumburg Award.
Britain's Badke String Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at London's Royal Holloway University, are center stage on February 28. Formed in 2002, the Quartet is widely recognized as one of Britain's finest string quartets, and they play on a fine set of instruments. Continuing the new/old coupling, Charlotte Scott performs on the 1685 'Gagliano' Stradivarius; Emma Parker, a Peter Guarnerius violin from 1672; Jon Thorne plays a Giovanni Grancino viola from 1692; and Nathaniel Boyd is performing on a Grancino cello from 1695.
The final concert of the season presents the Axiom Brass Quintet on March 13. The Chicago-based quintet's repertoire includes traditional brass quintets, string quartet transcriptions, early music, and unique arrangements of American and Latin jazz. The ensemble's commitment to new music has led to several world premieres and ongoing commissioning projects. Axiom Brass is an Ensemble-in-Residence at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, as well as Rush Hour Concerts' "Back of the Yards" program in Chicago
Concert tickets are $20 at the door one hour before the performance or online: Keystix.com or classicalconcertskw.com. Any questions please call 305.745.2283, Season subscription pass (6 concerts) - $100. Subscription passes can be used for all concerts or for multiple guests at one or more concerts. 809 White St. 305-296-2080 Feb 18 J.H. Allen Reception / Exhibition 6-8PM for "Walk on White"
On Thursday evening, February 18, Stone Soup Gallery at 809 White Street hosts a showing of new works in oil and fresco by popular Key West artist, J. H. Allen, whose work nearly sold out last year at this time. Allen is noted for his depiction of water and cloud effects in the keys, and this collection of paintings is entitled: It's a Watery World. The show opens as part of the Walk On White festivities and runs through the end of March.
Allen's work in oil depicts the romance of the Florida landscape with a limited color palette of blues and ochres that is reminiscent of European paintings of the nineteenth century. His Fresco work, also on display, is much more graphic and contemporary in scope with a neo-expressive use of texture and composition. The artist will be present from six to eight pm to meet patrons and discuss the paintings on display.

Feb 20 5-8 "Moon Over Havana" by WB Thompson Celebrates the Color &
Character of Cuba
William Bradley Thompson captures Cuba - and captivates the curious traveler with paintings as intriguing and animated as the island itself.
In a caffeinated collision of colors and characters, history and humanity, Thompson brilliantly conveys the contradictions and question marks of Key West's international neighbor.
Thompson celebrates that kaleidoscopic clash in his latest exhibit, "Moon Over Havana," which opens with an artist's reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at The Gallery on Greene, 606 Greene St., Key West.
Old cars and new tour buses crowd the curving Malecon. Wistful women and unflinching federales wait for what will come; close, yet comfortable, and characteristically Cuban. Residents recline in doorways, and moonlight shines the city.
Thompson, who started his career as a lawyer and only painted to pay his law school tuition, sees it all and shows it off in Technicolor perfection.
The works in Thompson's "Moon Over Havana" are the results of a recent visit to Cuba during the Havana Biennial, said Gallery on Greene owner Nance Frank.
The acclaimed international art exchange occurs every two years, cloaking the country in contemporary art and exploring important international themes such as progress, technology and development.
Thompson will return to Cuba for the next Havana Biennial and will exhibit his work on the Malecon, the renowned and windswept seawall between Havana and its harbor.
In "Moon Over Havana," Thompson boldly bridges abstract and representational expression, which is how he describes his approach to art, refusing to relegate his subjects to one or the other.
"Moon Over Havana" opens Feb. 20 with an artist's reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at Gallery on Greene, 606 Greene St., Key West. For more information, visit galleryongreene.com or call 305-294-1669.

(released in the US as "Tight Little Island") at 6:00pm on Thursday, February 18 in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. The 1949 film is a lighthearted and exaggerated comedy directed by Alexander Mackendrick, starring Basil Radford, Joan Greenwood, Gordon Jackson and Catherine Lacey and is based on a true story of Scottish islanders who attempt to plunder many thousands of cases of whiskey from a stranded ship during a whiskey drought brought on by World War II rationing. "This terrifically witty British film from the famed Ealing Studios gives us a bar-stool seat at life on an island, thirsty for the golden nectar, the "water of life," says Key West Art & Historical Society Board member and film coordinator/host Michael Shields. "Key Westers will identify and laugh along on the slippery slope of what islanders will do to get their booze!"
