Florida Keys Community College's student ceramics club Mud-Pi will hold its annual fund-raising event on Friday, February 19 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the Key West Campus around the Jay Gogin "Essence of Life" Memorial Fountain. The party will feature fine food and drinks, live music by the Marty Stonely Band, and art created by FKCC students. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $30 at www.keystix.com or for $35 at the door.
As per tradition, attendees will be able to select their own student-crafted ceramic bowl from which to enjoy their meal and then keep as a commemorative souvenir. The funds raised will be used to purchase materials and equipment that enable Mud-Pi to continue to beautify and enrich the community. For more than 20 years, the talented students of Mud-Pi have generously created dozens of ornate ceramic wall murals and garden fountains that grace many locations in the Keys and provide the College's Key West Campus its signature aesthetic. The department also hosts young students-elementary through high school grades-as well as special needs groups to introduce them to the fine art of pottery.

305-304-3203 N ext Performance 2/14 : Eroica Trio. Their website has greatedetail.

The winter heats up when the Eroica Trio breezes into town on February 14. Whether playing the great standards of the piano trio repertoire or daring contemporary works, the three young women who make up this celebrated string ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. The New York Times writes, "They play chamber music for the concert hall. There is an edge of the seat intensity to every note they produce". The Trio won the prestigious Naumburg Award.

Britain's Badke String Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at London's Royal Holloway University, are center stage on February 28. Formed in 2002, the Quartet is widely recognized as one of Britain's finest string quartets, and they play on a fine set of instruments. Continuing the new/old coupling, Charlotte Scott performs on the 1685 'Gagliano' Stradivarius; Emma Parker, a Peter Guarnerius violin from 1672; Jon Thorne plays a Giovanni Grancino viola from 1692; and Nathaniel Boyd is performing on a Grancino cello from 1695.

The final concert of the season presents the Axiom Brass Quintet on March 13. The Chicago-based quintet's repertoire includes traditional brass quintets, string quartet transcriptions, early music, and unique arrangements of American and Latin jazz. The ensemble's commitment to new music has led to several world premieres and ongoing commissioning projects. Axiom Brass is an Ensemble-in-Residence at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, as well as Rush Hour Concerts' "Back of the Yards" program in Chicago

Concert tickets are $20 at the door one hour before the performance or online: Keystix.com or classicalconcertskw.com. The Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit is celebrating the playwright's March birthday by providing a series of cultural events to be held throughout the month. Artist and writers are invited to participate in three contests being offered as part of the celebration: Short Story Writing, Poetry and Plein Air Painting.

Registration and submission deadline for the writing contest is March 5. Professor Susanne Woods is coordinating the contest and will join other published writers in selecting the winners. Registration and submission for the poetry contest is March 17. Respected poets will join coordinator Nancy Boylan from the Key West Poetry Guild in judging poetry submissions. There is a possibility that the entries in the short story and poetry contests will be published in an on-line publication.

This year's painting contest is again coordinated by Cori Convertito, curator at the Key West Art and Historical Society. Registration deadline for the plein air painting contest is March 17. The painting event will be held on March 19 from 9 to noon at the Waterfront Playhouse, the subject of this year's painting contest. Dr. Convertito and other community art leaders will serve as judges. The winning painting will be featured on the cover of the playhouse's 2016-2017 playbill. Additionally, first and second place winners in all three contests will receive cash prizes.

Scott Pridgen Executive Dir.

After three decades of illness and devastating loss to the Florida Keys, the 30th anniversary of AIDS Help is not one Executive Director Scott Pridgen takes lightly.  "As we prepare to recognize our 30 years at the Harry S. Truman Little White House on February 19th, we are very cognizant that there's still no cure...there's still no vaccine...and new incidents of HIV infection, as well as various sexually-transmitted illnesses, are on the uptick. Our work as an Agency isn't done and in many ways, has more urgency than ever," he explains.

AIDS Help has become a national model, Pridgen points out, and it's that success that will be applauded among heavy d'ouevres by the Iron Chefs, a cash bar and entertainment from Debra and Patrick, generously underwritten by both the Elwell and Meisel families.  What the evening, titled '30 Years of Caring', will offer from 6 - 8 p.m. that Friday is a rewind of the past, a re-introduction to the present and renewal for what the future holds. What Pridgen calls the 4 Pillars of the Agency will be reiterated: "Treatment. Prevention. Housing. Research. Those are the 2016 cornerstones," Pridgen notes.  "No matter how they've been refurbished and updated over time, they bear the weight of the Agency like the legs of a chair, the wheels of a car and lot of people helped raise those pillars.""
It's one reason the Agency has opted to invite the entire Keys community via social media, public relations outreach, personal phone calls, E-blasts and casual conversation. At first, the guest list was comprised of the social services and healthcare arenas, Monroe County governance, past Board members, philanthropists, our Royal family and long-standing volunteers.
"And then a light went off over our heads," Pridgen remarks. "How could we omit so many who have forged a special relationship with our Agency? So, if you haven't heard about it before now, consider this your official invitation!"
One regret: finite space has placed limitations on the size and sprawl of how many can attend, so Pridgen adds that a prompt RSVP is essential.  To reserve your place, Pridgen emphasizes, please e-mail Groups@WeveGotTheKeys.com.

Key West has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a 2015 Tree City USA in honor of the city's commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the fourth time the city has earned this recognition. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
Key West achieved this recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capital and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Trees provide multipole benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove pollutants and provide wildlife habitat.

Connoisseurs of the cocktail will be intoxicated (figuratively, of course!) by the upcoming presentation at the Key West Art & Historical Society. On Thursday, February 11, from 6:00pm-7:00pm, the Society welcomes the public to the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House for "Hemingway's Favorite Drinks: His Days in the Gulf Stream," a presentation by Philip Greene, attorney, writer, cocktail historian, and co-founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail.

PLUS
Anyone interested in honing their photography skills now has a chance to do so with one of the world's greatest living photographers. Allen Rokach-hailed by the New York Academy of Sciences as "one of the world's preeminent flower and garden photographers"- will lead a weekend workshop and lecture March 4-6
as offered by the Key West Art & Historical Society's adolescent and adult education program, "Outside The Lines."
PLUS
The Key West Art & Historical Society will present "Whisky Galore!" (released in the US as "Tight Little Island") at 6:00pm on Thursday, February 18 in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street. The 1949 film is a lighthearted and exaggerated comedy directed by Alexander Mackendrick, starring Basil Radford, Joan Greenwood, Gordon Jackson and Catherine Lacey and is based on a true story of Scottish islanders who attempt to plunder many thousands of cases of whiskey from a stranded ship during a whiskey drought brought on by World War II rationing. "This terrifically witty British film from the famed Ealing Studios gives us a bar-stool seat at life on an island, thirsty for the golden nectar, the "water of life," says Key West Art & Historical Society Board member and film coordinator/host Michael Shields. "Key Westers will identify and laugh along on the slippery slope of what islanders will do to get their booze!"

PLUS
Key West Art & Historical Society presents the first of three monthly Lunchtime Lecture Series on Wednesday, February 17 from 12:00pm-1:00pm at the Custom House Museum on 281 Front Street. The Series will offer attendees a behind the scene's perspective of The Society's curatorial department, Curator Cori Convertito's unique approach to collections management, and how exhibits are created.  The first in the Series features a discussion about the creative process behind the exhibit

Cori Convertito, PhD., Curator for the Key West Art & Historical Society, and host of its Lunchtime Lecture Series, holds a 9ft x 4ft Suzie dePoo peacock-themed textile artwork, one of the many historic artworks that The Society is custodian to.

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFO FROM ERIC ELLOIE

    --------------------------------------
Music Educator Jack Louden has brought music back to Stanley Switlik Elementary in Marathon. And the students are every excited. After being eliminated three years ago, the school is again echoing the sounds of music!
Mr. Louden, who was teaching in the public school system of suburban Atlanta, was surprised to hear last spring that the county was cutting back on music. He began searching for a new position, and successfully landed his current position at Switlik. "The administration, faculty and parents are so glad that music is back," says Mr. Louden who teaches music to grades Kindergarten through grade 5. Students wanted to begin a chorus. So, after holding audition last September, 48 students in grades 3 through 5, became the Switlik Singers. The group has sung at various functions, including Fishermen's Hospital Christmas tree lighting, Veteran's Day Celebration, and the Santa's Workshop, sponsored by the school's PTO. If you would like to have the choir sing at your special event, please call Mr. Louden at the school or e-mail him at JackLouden@Gmail.com.  The chorus  also needs funding to purchase music and chorus uniforms. If you would like to help, please contact Mr. Louden at 305-289-2490

Next in the VIP Series Schedule:
"Tennessee Williams in Key West"
Dennis Beaver, Founder & Curator of the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit. Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
This insightful presentation is an overview of the life of playwright Tennessee Williams during his residency in Key West from 1949 to 1983, years in which he won multiple awards for drama including two Pulitzers and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. For this lecture, FKCC is proud to welcome Dennis Beaver, Founder and Curator of the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit. Come and experience the literary legend in a new local light.
"Jaws 2016: How We See Sharks 40 Years Later"
Dr. Patrick Rice, FKCC's Chief Science and Research Officer.
Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. In 1975, the movie blockbuster Jaws tapped into our primordial fear of sharks and resulted in a phobia and backlash against sharks that lasted for decades. However, over the past 40 years the perception of sharks has changed and the once feared monsters are now being seen as majestic, beautiful creatures that are critical to our ocean's health. This presentation will take you on a journey through the evolution and history of sharks, with a special focus on shark sensory biology and how they perceive their watery world.
FKCC's 2016 V.I.P. Series continues with "Conversations with Broadway Legend Ben Vereen" on Thursday, February 18 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre.
