"Celebrate The Season" Exhibition for Newly Hung Works Local Artists currently Showing To get on their mailing List : Info@Keywestartcenter.com.

Key West Art Center will be hosting its first monthly Membership Meeting of 2016 on Friday, January 8
th at 3:30 pm the. Directly following the meeting the public is invited to attend a customary presentation to the membership by an artist of distinction. This month's presentation will be given by local artist Adam Russell.
Adam, and his wife Kelly Lever, moved to the island from Ohio in January 2010, a few months after completing an artist's residency at The Studios of Key West. Since then they have established themselves in our community, both as artists and business owners. Specializing in the making and curating of functional pottery and ceramic fine art, Key West Pottery was first established on Truman Ave. in 2010, relocating to 1203 Duval Street in 2014. The gallery - or, self descried "art house"- has quickly become a dynamic creative space in Old Town.
Adam Russell is a South Florida based Artist and Arts Advocate working in a variety of media to describe an artistic thesis rooted in the discovery of contemporary culture through access to its many historical influences. Educated in fine arts at the Columbus College of Art and Design and Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Adam has served on the board of Sculpture Key West and the City of Key West Art in Public Places and was recently appointed to the Advisory Board of Directors of the Key West Art and Historical Society.

Bone Island Maggie
by Peg Gregory,
$3.99 ebook, $14.95 paperback

"Bone Island Maggie is as classic a Key West character as you are likely to meet either in a book or strolling Duval Street. Her smile may be toothless, but her bite certainly isn't as she doggedly tracks down the brutal killer of an old friend. It's a zany romp that puts Maggie and her faithful ex-Marine chauffeur on a trail that runs from Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Road to the family paladares of Havana," says V. C. Weeks, Code of Honor.

Chris Bergh next in Audubon Speaker Series

The Florida Keys Audubon Society will kick off its 2016 Speaker Series on Wednesday, January 6 at 6:30 p.m. with a talk by Chris Bergh at the Key West Garden Club. Bergh is the Nature Conservancy's South Florida Conservation Director. He is also a member of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. His talk will be about how wildlife can benefit form updated sanctuary and refuge rules.
Currently all three of the Florida Keys national wildlife refuges, as well the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, are in the middle of a review process of their management plans. Bergh says that the groups are in the middle of that process, and in the coming year people will have a chance to give input on revised rules.
The question, says Bergh, is, "How do we take advantage of the new science that has occurred, and what we've learned about how various management practices have worked, in order to tweak and improve the management plan?" FKAS talks are free and open to the public.

ALSO  KEY WEST FOLLIES JAN 15 AT TWT 8PM
After a highly successful revival last season, the Key West Follies returns this year to again present a large variety of local talent in an old fashioned vaudeville type show on Friday Evening, January 15, 2016 at 8 PM. The Follies is patterned after the old Ed Sullivan's "Toast of the Town, and presents Key West artists in the professional environment of the Tennessee Williams Theatre.
It features the best (and sometimes the worst) of the local performing arts community. Director Rick Dery again promises a lively variety show of fourteen acts, and TWT lighting Director Anthony Palmer again will again paint the stage in marvelous patterns and colors. Theatre bars remain open for an impromptu mixer between the cast and the audience following the production. Ticket start at $20 for the mezzanine through $40 for center orchestra. Key West Follies benefits the Key West Business Guild. Click LINK3 for Tickets and Info
ALSO Peter Arnow sends regards tell us about "Towels of KW" :
The Key West Business Guild will award its annual Lifetime Membership Award to Towels of Key West at its January 6 membership luncheon held at the Key West Marriott Beachside.

They opened Cocktails of Key West nine years ago and began selling their own line of clothing, American Boy Key West, five years ago. Towels of Key West was one of the first to offer the famed LGBT Rainbow towel in the US for sale 30 years ago. They just recently reintroduced the Rainbow towel to the public this fall.

While everyone is busy with this hectic high season, it's a good time to remember that scammers don't take a holiday. And they're always coming up with new ways  to try and bilk people out of their money.
There have been recent reports of a new scam being perpetrated in Monroe County. A caller has identified himself as a member of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. According to the reports, this scammer warns people that they have missed a court summons. He attempts to have them make a payment in order to avoid arrest.
This is a reminder that law enforcement officers will never call and insist on payment to avoid arrest. It's also a reminder that, as convincing as the scammer's story is, never give out critical personal information over the phone. And if someone insists you wire or transfer money, be very wary. Always check to find out if the caller is legitimate.

Key West Art & Historical Society presents award-winning film "Chico & Rita" at Custom House Museum
On Thursday, January 7 at 6:00 pm, Key West Art & Historical Society will offer the 2012 Oscar-nominated animated film "Chico & Rita" - a story that illuminates a journey of the culture, the people, and the music that has influenced the world-in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center on the third floor of the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.

Oscar®-winning director Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque, Calle 54) and Spain's legendary illustrator Javier Mariscal celebrate their passion for the music and culture of Cuba with an epic story of love, passion, and heartbreak. Set in 1948, the film features Chico- a young piano player with big dreams, and Rita- a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and desire unite them as they chase their dreams and each other from Havana to New York to Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas. The film captures a defining moment in the evolution of history and jazz, featuring the music of Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Tito Puente, Chano Pozo, and others.  Save the Dates: Artist Vera Vasek to Offer Four Week Installation Workshop at Fort East Martello
Saturday, January 9 marks the first of four consecutive Saturday sessions of Which Way Is Up?, a collaborative, multidisciplinary installation workshop offered by Vera Vasek in conjunction with Key West Art & Historical Society and their adolescent andadult education program, Outside The Lines. The workshop will run January 9, 16, 21, and 30 from 10:00AM-12:00PM and will be held at Fort East Martello's second floor citadel. The museum's eclectic collection will provide inspiration for a collaborative piece under the guidance of Vasek, who will lead them through the creative process from idea to formulation to creation. The workshop will culminate in a final exhibition with a reception on Friday, February 5 from 5:30PM-7:00PM.
Reserve your spot in this limited-space workshop by registering online at KWAHS.ORG/Learn. For more information callAdele Williams, Director of Educataion, at 305-295-6616 x 106. Cost is $125 for KWAHS members or $150 for non-members. All supplies will be provided. Your museums. Your community. It takes an island. IMAGE CAPTION: Artist Vera Vasek will guide participants through a series of explorations using historic Fort East Martello and the Museum as impetus for creativity in an upcoming installation workshop held by Key West Art & Historical Society each Saturday in January. Above Photo by Alan Kennish.

Vasek moved to the Keys in 1988 and became deeply inspired by the landscape around her, particularly that of the backcountry flats with their shifting sands, silence, and stillness. The colors and expanse found there "fed her sense of wonder" and led her towards creative explorations and collaborations with plaster, burlap, wind, weather, and time. She is an artist that embraces the poetry of process while creating work that "explores and balances surface phenomenon with what lies beneath and couples positive and negative images as part of a more complex and complete resolution," says renowned critic Lilly Wei.

I have to be honest I was surprised how much I enjoyed the trip and am looking forward to our trip next May which travels from Paris to Normandy then back to Paris. It was a truly magical adventure!
The campaign is a raffle for the Paris Cruise next May. It includes a cabin for 2 and 2 round trip tickets from Air Canada. The value of the package is $13,200.00.
We have so much more music to bring you for the 2016 season and are excited about our plans for the 2016-17 Season. Let's make sure all our campaigns are successful. Give a $100 donation and receive a chance to win a trip of a life time. Give more hundreds and get more chances! J Only 300 tickets will be raffled and the winner announced in early February. The Symphony office will fill out your raffle ticket/s and send you your numbered stub. Here is the LINK1 to make a donation
Or call 954-522-8445 to donate over the phone or send your donation by check to: South Florida Symphony ~ 221 SW 3rd Avenue ~ Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312; Thank you, for caring about your Symphony. Happy New Year! Sebrina

Forgotten Felines 305-743-2520

Forgotten Felines is an all volunteer organization which provides food and veterinary care to homeless and abandoned cats in the Middle and Lower Keys. They also place adoptable cats in loving homes and strive to educate the public about the imprtance of proper care and spay/neuter of pets. In the nearly two decades of its existence, Forgotten Felines has spayed/neutered more than 3,000 cats. They also maintain a number of daily feeding stations which service several hundred homeless cats.
----------------

On behalf of the officers, directors, volunteers, and, most importantly the abandoned and feral cats for which we provide food, spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and medical care, Forgotten Felines of the Florida Keys would like to thank all of the generous donors who opened their hearts and their wallets during our recent fundraiser. The event was a huge success, meeting the goal that had been set by the leadership.
A special thanks goes out to Marathon businessman and animal lover Richie Morretti who made a matching grant for the first $5,000 collected in the drive.

Forgotten Felines of the Florida Keys will hold its first quarterly meeting of the season at the Martin Luther Chapel (behind the NAPA store on Overseas Highway in Marathon) January 16th. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served.
If you are unable to attend, but are interested in becoming a Forgotten Felines volunteer or to make a donation should call (305) 743-2520 OR 305-515-2759. Jerry Dykhuisen sends regards and this end of the year report :

Over 120 sea turtle experts from around the world traveled to the beautiful Florida Keys to attend the Sea Turtle Workshop hosted by The Turtle Hospital this past weekend. Veterinarians, rehabilitation specialists, and scientists specializing in marine turtles traveled great distances to share their experience and to help further their knowledge of sea turtles. New friendships were born, colleagues reunited, and ideas shared regarding marine turtle veterinary care, rehabilitation, husbandry, education, and research. The Monroe County Government EOC was the site for a full day of lectures and presentations. Georgia Sea Turtle Center's Dr. Terry Norton talked about "Wound Care in Sea Turtles" and lead a hand's on lab on Wound Vac Therapy at the Turtle Hospital on Sunday. Florida Atlantic University's Dr. Jeanette Wyneken presented on "Growth and shape change in neonate Flatback Turtles" and lectured on "Flippers: Inside and Out on Sunday. The University of Florida was well represented with lectures and hands-on labs: Dr. Brian Stacy lead a Necropsy Lab at the Turtle Hospital, Dr. Nicole Stacy presented on "Sea Turtle Leukocytes" and lead a blood lab on Sunday and Dr. Mike Walsh spoke about "Euthanasia of Immature Green Sea Turtles". Seating at the government center was filled to capacity and a total of 27 lectures ran well into Saturday evening. The Hyatt's Faro Blanco Lighthouse Restaurant catered a delicious buffet dinner on the lawn at the Turtle Hospital for workshop attendees. Large celebration tents lit with hanging chandeliers kept guests dry despite the soggy weather. The angelic voice of local entertainer Adrienne helped lighten the mood and added to the ambiance as the day's serious topics waned into dinner conversation. Although guests came from different backgrounds, from as far away as Italy, they had one goal in mind: to better help the survival of sea turtles throughout the world. The Turtle Hospital would like to thank Marathon's island community, the vendors, and Monroe County Commissioners for their support and the warm welcome extended to conference attendees.
