305-304-3203 Jan 31 (William Hagen : Violin) . 4PM at St. Paul's    THEN  next Performance 2/14 : Eroica Trio. Their website has greater detail.

The month of January wraps up with a performance by violin player William Hagen. Reaffirming the "everything old is new again" theme, the young musician plays on an Andrea Guarneri (Cremona) violin, c. 1675. Hagen, a native Utahn, began violin lessons at the age of four, later studying with virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho at The Juilliard School. In a program sure to please traditionalists, Hagen opens with a "sweet little Mozart sonata" and continues with selections from Prokofiev and Ravel, as well as others.

The winter heats up when the Eroica Trio breezes into town on February 14. Whether playing the great standards of the piano trio repertoire or daring contemporary works, the three young women who make up this celebrated string ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. The New York Times writes, "They play chamber music for the concert hall. There is an edge of the seat intensity to every note they produce". The Trio won the prestigious Naumburg Award

Concert tickets are $20 at the door one hour before the performance or online: classicalconcertskw.com. Any questions please call 305.745.2283, Season subscription pass (6 concerts) - $100. Subscription passes can be used for all concerts or for

The Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit is celebrating the playwright's March birthday by providing a series of cultural events to be held throughout the month. Artist and writers are invited to participate in three contests being offered as part of the celebration: Short Story Writing, Poetry and Plein Air Painting.

Registration and submission deadline for the writing contest is March 5. Professor Susanne Woods is coordinating the contest and will join other published writers in selecting the winners. Registration and submission for the poetry contest is March 17. Respected poets will join coordinator Nancy Boylan from the Key West Poetry Guild in judging poetry submissions. There is a possibility that the entries in the short story and poetry contests will be published in an on-line publication.

This year's painting contest is again coordinated by Cori Convertito, curator at the Key West Art and Historical Society. Registration deadline for the plein air painting contest is March 17. The painting event will be held on March 19 from 9 to noon at the Waterfront Playhouse, the subject of this year's painting contest. Dr. Convertito and other community art leaders will serve as judges. The winning painting will be featured on the cover of the playhouse's 2016-2017 playbill. Additionally, first and second place winners in all three contests will receive cash prizes.

For registration forms and full details about the contests and other planned events, go to twkw.org or email Dennis Beaver at exhibit@twkw.org.; or 305-294-3121 513 Truman Ave.

Scott Pridgen Executive Dir.

After three decades of illness and devastating loss to the Florida Keys, the 30th anniversary of AIDS Help is not one Executive Director Scott Pridgen takes lightly.  "As we prepare to recognize our 30 years at the Harry S. Truman Little White House on February 19th, we are very cognizant that there's still no cure...there's still no vaccine...and new incidents of HIV infection, as well as various sexually-transmitted illnesses, are on the uptick. Our work as an Agency isn't done and in many ways, has more urgency than ever," he explains.

AIDS Help has become a national model, Pridgen points out, and it's that success that will be applauded among heavy d'ouevres by the Iron Chefs, a cash bar and entertainment from Debra and Patrick, generously underwritten by both the Elwell and Meisel families.  What the evening, titled '30 Years of Caring', will offer from 6 - 8 p.m. that Friday is a rewind of the past, a re-introduction to the present and renewal for what the future holds. What Pridgen calls the 4 Pillars of the Agency will be reiterated: "Treatment. Prevention. Housing. Research. Those are the 2016 cornerstones," Pridgen notes.  "No matter how they've been refurbished and updated over time, they bear the weight of the Agency like the legs of a chair, the wheels of a car and lot of people helped raise those pillars.""
It's one reason the Agency has opted to invite the entire Keys community via social media, public relations outreach, personal phone calls, E-blasts and casual conversation. At first, the guest list was comprised of the social services and healthcare arenas, Monroe County governance, past Board members, philanthropists, our Royal family and long-standing volunteers.
"And then a light went off over our heads," Pridgen remarks. "How could we omit so many who have forged a special relationship with our Agency? So, if you haven't heard about it before now, consider this your official invitation!"
One regret: finite space has placed limitations on the size and sprawl of how many can attend, so Pridgen adds that a prompt RSVP is essential.  To reserve your place, Pridgen emphasizes, please e-mail Groups@WeveGotTheKeys.com.

Students and mentors were on hand when Mayor Craig Cates, vice Mayor Clayton Lopez and Commissioner Sam Kaufman gave a huge thank you to Take Stock in Children in light of National Mentoring Month.  First established in 1995 in Monroe County, Take Stock provides at-risk and low-income students extensive support, motivation and accountability to ensure they graduate from high school and pursue their post s econdary education goals. In exchange for the students' hard work, they receive a full four-year Florida pre-paid scholarship.  The work of Take Stock Monroe mentors results in the high school graduation of 100 percent of the Take Stock scholars, and the matriculation of 96 percent in post-secondary education, well over the national averages. Nearly 800 students in Monroe County have been served by Take Stock.  "During National Mentoring Month," noted the Mayor in his proclamation, "Take Stock in Children Monroe commends and honors its 250 volunteer mentors for the assistance, advice, and guidance they provide during weekly mentor sessions, making a positive difference in the students' lives and improving their self-confidence and belief that a college degree is attainable."

Kirsten Hines is a writer, photographer, biologist and environmental educator focused on wildlife, nature, travel and conservation. She has long championed Florida's native plants and habitats through her writing and photography.

James A. Kushlan is an ornithologist, educator, writer, and conservationist. A funny and powerful portrayal of a mother who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son's partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son or their own. Haunted by her son's ghost and weighed down by anger, the mother finds true hope and promise in the new and evolving definition of "family." The complex relationships that emerge are surprising and deeply moving.
