A Look Inside This Week's Whims

May 2024, 2nd Edition

Good evening, Riley families,

What a spirited week we had last week! From Monochrome Monday to Fancy Friday, children and facilitators pulled out all the stops for this year's Spirit Week. Thank you for showing up and showing out for this year's prompts! And thank you to all who joined us in the animal enclosure on Friday afternoon. It was so wonderful to gather with all of you for Riley's Kid Hugging event.

Reminder to Juniper and Lower School parents: Thursday the children will visit the Rockport Opera House for DIVE IN! An Undersea Adventure Field Trip.

See you in the morning!

Spring Plays

Friday, May 31st, 5 pm

The Middle School Spring performance of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and the Upper School's performance of The Tempest, also by Shakespeare, will be on the evening of Friday, May 31. The evening begins at 5pm with the Lower School's play, Gluskabe and the Maple Trees, an adaptation of an Abenaki folk tale. The evening promises to be filled with humor, magic love and intrigue.

The children have been working with so much pride of accomplishment for undertaking the challenge of working with these complex texts (adapted for children). Please be aware that there is the depiction of intoxication and imbibing of wine and some language in the works that we have discussed at length in the context of Shakespeare but are aware may be surprising to hear, especially for any audience members. It is also possible that there may be a flashing lights effect to simulate lightning if we find that we are able to accomplish that effect, so people with sensitivities to flashing lights should be aware. Please join us for this enchanting evening!

Friday Activity: Goat Yoga!

The Art Room welcomed a special visitor this past week for Friday Activities: a goat kid! A stretchy, snuggly good time was had by all!

Straw Donations Requested for the Farm & Garden Program

The Farm ands Garden program consumes a lot of straw*, as animal bedding and as a growing medium or mulch. We're requesting donations of straw bales to continue providing the best care for the newest members of our community, our goat kids. Donated bales may be counted toward parent volunteer hours.

*Straw, not hay! Thank you!

Please send children with back up clothes, particularly extra socks, and rain gear! Spring has sprung and having the right extras and gear can really make or break a child's day! Don't forget to label clothes!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
