A Look Inside This Week's Whims

November 2023, 1st Edition

Happy November, all!

The calendar this month is full of so many wonderful opportunities to gather with our Riley community and we hope to see your lovely faces as often as we're able! Every Wednesday we're welcoming parents to stay after school with their children to enjoy our beautiful campus. Families can create their own fun or join up with a fun game of dodgeball or ultimate frisbee. Later this month we'll be making reusable beeswax food wraps at Women's Art Night, enjoying the children's hard work at the Fall Productions, feasting at Thanksgiving in the Woods, and gathering on Parent's Night & Mini Craft Fair. Check the calendar to stay in the loop and reach out with any questions you might have!

Are you still getting little info after asking " How was your day?"

Here are s0me more helpful approaches:

AfterSchool Questions

Hope you all are feeling mightily rested after gaining an hour from the time change last night! Looking forward to sunnier morning drop offs in the weeks ahead.

See you in the morning!

Late fall temperatures are here! Please send your children in layers with warm backup clothing, especially extra socks. Please remember to label your child's clothing so that as layers come off over the course of the day we're able to keep track of belongings. Thank you!

Women's Art Night:

Art Room opens at 4:30 but folks are more than welcome to trickle in. No experience needed!

If you plan to attend, send a quick RSVP to julieletowski@gmail.com so that we can ensure there are enough supplies on hand. Thank you!

Fall Productions

Friday November 17th, 5 PM

Coming Friday, November 17 at 5:00pm, Riley Upper and Middle school children will be taking the stage in two puppet shows. The first is called “The Great Race” and the second is “Li Chi and the Serpent”. The children have painstakingly created their characters’ puppets by hand and are excited to share these two Chinese myths. We hope you all can come! - Michelle

Lower Schoolers will also have their fall production this evening and will be presenting before the Middle/Upper School puppet shows.

Thanksgiving in the Woods

Parent Back to School Night

November 30th, 3:30-6

Parents will be encouraged to come explore the classrooms and their children's work… AND to join us for afternoon tea and a mini craft fair.

We're thrilled to be adding a Tea & Mini Crafters Market to this wonderful evening!

This is a call to crafters/makers/artists who would like to participate in this. It will be a fundraiser asking vendors to donate a portion of their sales.

Order forms and more info to come. Thanks to Mary Nelson and Adriana Diioro for spearheading. Reach out to Becky or Lindsay for more information.

Call for Ideas & Connections;

Plus Riley Need to Knows, Updates, & More!

Procedure change for early pick up of students.. any child who needs to be picked up early must be dismissed through the office. If the pick up will be at the time of a class change, the child can be waiting in the office . However, if it is midway through a class period, parents must retrieve them directly from class before signing them out.

Classes run 8:45-9:45; 10-11; 11-12; 12-1:30; 1:30-2:30; 2:30-3:30. For example: a child getting picked up at 11:45 or 2:15 or would have to be collected from class. If you want your child waiting for you in the office, we will hold them there from the start of class.

Riley's search continues for a MATH facilitator for the Upper School beginning in December.. please reach out if you have a candidate in mind!

The Board of Trustees is looking to expand - recommendations welcome!

Also, know anyone that you would love to be a part of the Riley Community? From prospective families to guest speakers or demonstrations and beyond, your connections and ideas are eagerly welcomed! Just let Becky know.

ANY insights, questions, concerns about anything … please always come directly to Becky, either by catching her in the office, emailing director@rileyschool.org or calling 596-6405 to set up an appointment. No concern is too small..

In addition, if it you need to get in touch and it is related directly to your child, please always feel free to connect with Becky, with Lindsay if it is a Wade Acres child, with Hattie for Lower School children, Anna for Middle School children, and Kyle for Upper School children. In addition, you always have access to your child’s Reflection leader at their Riley email… or by doing a quick check in at pick up. Please know that faculty are expected to reply within 24 hours.. but it may not be sooner as their focus during the day is on the children!

Don't Forget Your Blaze Orange!

Hunting season is here and it's time to make sure our children have some blaze orange to wear while they're in the woods. Outgrown last year's blaze orange gear? Grab some Riley gear in blaze orange to keep them safe!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
