Ribbon cutting and open house at Mote Marine Laboratory's new International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration on Summerland Key
Threatened coral reefs now have more powerful allies in the Florida Keys following the official opening of Mote Marine Laboratory's International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration (IC2R3) on May 25 at Summerland Key, Florida.
Here are just 12 Photos of the 180 I took ; Our First Special Edition Summer Issue will have about 30 Additional Photos.

The 19,000-square-foot facility will more than double Mote's space for coral research and restoration efforts at its existing Summerland Key campus - one of five Mote sites in Florida - and provide an enhanced base of operations for collaborating scientists from around the world.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony Held on May 25 will allow Mote scientists, trustees, supporters and community leaders to celebrate and explore Mote's IC2R3 - a category-5 hurricane resistant facility with 30.1 kilowatt solar panels, a rainwater capture system and other eco-friendly features. The application process is under way to designate IC2R3 as the first LEED Gold facility in Monroe County.
Scientists at IC2R3 and its Goldstein Institute will advance coral reef research using: new seawater systems, raceways and experimental tanks for studying multiple reef species facing climate change impacts such as rising ocean temperatures and ocean acidification; molecular equipment to process and prepare samples for next generation sequencing and genomic analyses - for example, to find the best genetic strains of corals for reef restoration; microbial supplies for studying microscopic life forms that can help or harm coral reefs; a carbonate chemistry lab for ocean acidification research; and more. The facility offers classrooms and dormitories for visiting scientists and students.  Here is the RIBBON CUTTING LINK to the usual Excellent E-Newsletters that Kaitlyn and Hayley Produce; this MOTE E-Newsletter was done just a few Hours after Event.

The 2017 ART IN THE GARDEN Opened Recently
The famed gardens of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment included the art masterworks as counterpoint to the natural beauty of the botanical realm.  Each year, the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden on Stock Island emulates those storied sites by adding sculptural works by local artist.  But while the classical gardens are usually statements about the power of humankind over nature, "Art in the Garden" emphasizes harmony with nature.  Works are earth-friendly in the selection of materials (including recycled and natural "debris") and themes.
Sculptures by local artists accent the natural attractions of the conservation site on Stock Island through July, seven days a week, 10am-4pm.
The KW Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is located on College Road near the light on U.S. 1 just over Cow Key Bridge on Stock Island.  Call 305-296-1504 for directions and details.

Please mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Out of the Darkness Walk in Key West. Will you please join me and the  American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP)  as we continue our fight for suicide awareness and prevention?
I'm the captain of Hoover's Hoofers and it would be great to have you by my side as we walk to fight suicide. This year has been another tough year for communities throughout the Florida Keys. We have lost 3 teenagers, 3 young people in the Marathon area, and one of our most beloved citizens, Manny Madruga. And I just heard about another young woman in the upper keys.
So please walk with me - just click the Join This Team

Ocean Grill & Bar   is in many ways a testimony to the bounty of the sea, the adaptability of creating wonderous dishes from the vast variety of life beneath the waves and the endless multitude of flavors created by cultures all across the world using all manner of natures riches to bring out the natural beauty of seafood. Chef Lea Fettis has lived and breathed Key West's very own bounty of delicious seafood for over 20 years. Winning many awards along the way for items like 'Butter Poached Florida lobster' and  our signature dish 'Shrimp & Grits', he decided to give back much of what he has learned and create a largely seafood menu with flavors ranging from Cajun/Creole to the far East of Asia. An eclectic gathering of the finest ways to enjoy what we are blessed to have on our very own doorstep. You can find on our menu or Special's board local items like Florida Lobster, many varieties of local Shrimp, a myriad of wonderful fish, such as Yellowtail Snapper, Black Grouper, Mahi Mahi, Cobia, Ahi Tuna, Pompano, Lionfish and more.

Joining forces with Key West restaurant veterans John Gadonniex and Bill Jordan, we hope to put Ocean grill on the map of places to eat. With a great bar atmosphere as well we are hoping to join the expanding market in the upper end of Duval st for late night cocktails.

Shrimp and Grits - Jumbo local shrimp over fontina cheese grits with a roasted corn and bacon butter sauce

Scalouper - Fresh Diver Scallops fused with black grouper over lobster risotto with stir fried vegetables and a fresh mint puree

On April 28th, President Trump signed the America First Offshore Energy Executive Order, directing a review of the locations available for offshore oil and gas exploration and of certain regulations governing offshore oil and gas exploration in American waters. The Order also directs the Secretary of Commerce to refrain from designating or expanding any National Marine Sanctuary and to review all National Marine Sanctuaries designated and expanded in the past 10 years.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation strongly supports the expansion and designation of marine sanctuaries and opposes the withdrawal of protections for existing sites.  America's national marine sanctuaries - our Nation's blue parks - play a vital role in preserving our history, protecting cultural resources, and conserving natural resources for current and future generations.
Our NOAA  National Marine Sanctuary System provides incredible economic and social benefits to all Americans, particularly coastal communities.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation urges the Administration to recognize the importance of sanctuaries to all Americans and sectors of the economy. We  want to ensure your voice is heard!  Let the Administration know you support our National Marine Sanctuary System by signing on to the letter
to Secretary Ross and Secretary Zinke.

The council has 20 representatives and alternates from community constituent groups, and 10 government agencies have non-voting representatives on the council. Serving in a voluntary capacity, the council members represent a variety of local user groups, as well as the general public.  Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary protects 2,900 square nautical miles of critical marine habitat, including coral reef, hard bottom, sea grass meadows, mangrove communities and sand flats, as well as shipwrecks and maritime heritage resources. (L) City Commissioner Margaret Romero, during Tuesday's City Commission meeting, proclaimed May 22-26 as Emergency Medical Services Awareness Week. "Our providers are educated and trained to react in a predictable and controlled manner," she wrote in the proclamation. "They exemplify the dedication of their profession to develop and hone their knowledge and skills to provide the best possible care to our citizens. "Our dispatchers show fortitude under pressure to assess emergencies and initiate lifesaving help and our responders work hard, their energy and compassion are expected to be inexhaustible. "We thank and honor our cross-trained firefighter EMTs and firefighter/paramedics," she continued, "and all who provide an invaluable service to our community by administering high quality emergency medical services to patients with a wide variety of medical needs."

(R) In recognition of the vital role that our merchants and seamen play in Key West's history, culture and economy, Mayor Craig Cates proclaimed May 22nd Maritime Day during this week's City Commission meeting. In times of war and peace, the American Merchant Marine has been dedicated to the orderly flow of goods and materials to and from the shores of our nation. May 22nd marks the anniversary of the day the SS Savannah sailed from U.S. shores in 1819 to Liverpool on the first successful crossing of the Atlantic by a ship using steam propulsion. "Each year on this day," reads the proclamation, "men and women from all our United States currently serving in the American Merchant Marine are honored, along with those who served with such dedication and valor and those many seamen who lost their lives in our wars and conflict."  Ron Demes, Executive Business Director for the Naval Air Station Key West, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Propeller Club and the Maritime Historical Society. "I can think of no other city in the United States of America to pay homage," he said. "As we come into this Memorial Day, it's important to remember the 250,000 merchant mariners who service in WWII, 6500 of whom lost their lives. Hundreds were prisoners of war. Over 800 ships were sunk or severely damaged. "

A recent study by the City of Key West with a grant made possible by the U.S. Forest Service and the Florida Division of Forestry identified government facilities within the city of Key West as having only 19 percent tree canopy coverage. The island overall has almost twice as much shady space. Now the City and civilian volunteers are helping the Navy raise the bar by planting trees on Navy property.

Tammy Fox Sends Regards and tells us about the Upcoming Hurricane Season and Sheltering Animals
It's that time of year again when those of us living in the Keys are thinking about hurricane preparations. Today I'm asking you to add one more thing to your list of ways to get ready in the event that we see a hurricane. Please consider fostering an animal from the Florida Keys SPCA. Our facility in Key West is old and crumbling and flooding takes place even during a summer rain shower. It's just not safe in a hurricane. For this reason, we evacuate all our animals into foster homes when a hurricane threatens the Florida Keys. The same is true for our Marathon Campus. Although that facility is in better condition it is still not adequate or safe to leave our animals there during a hurricane. They would be happier, safer and drier with you in your home and we would be eternally grateful for the comfort you are bringing to them, and to us, during a storm. If you would like to help our animals, please call or stop by today and sign up for our foster program. Should a storm come our way, we will give you everything you need to care for one or more of our animals. All we ask is that you keep the animal safe until the storm has passed then bring them back to us. Unless of course you fall in love and would like to make it permanent.
For those of you who have helped us in the past; Thank You! We appreciate you opening your hearts and homes to our animals in order to keep them safe. Thanks to you we are able to breathe a sigh of relief knowing that our animals are safe, warm and with someone who could ease their stress during the high winds and rain. Your support means the world to us here at The Florida Keys SPCA.  We cannot do what we do without you. If you are able to stay on the hurricane foster list please call either location and let us know so we can keep the call list updated. Call us today at 305-294-4857 in Key West or 305-743-4800 in Marathon for more information and to be added to the hurricane foster list. Or visit us at either of our locations to learn more. Thank you for the support of your local animal shelter in the lower and middle keys- The Florida Keys SPCA

Key West Art & Historical Society Offers In-Depth Look at "Overseas to the Keys - Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway" Exhibit During Curator-Led Tour

On Wednesday, June 7, from 10-11am, Cori Convertito, Ph.D., will offer a special Curator-led tour of the newly renovated Key West Art & Historical Society Custom House Museum exhibit   " Overseas to the Keys - Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway."  The tour is free, but museum admission rates apply (KWAHS members enjoy free museum admission).  Reservations are required, limited to first 15 registrants.  The permanent exhibit celebrates an important part of Florida Keys history and the incredible engineering feat that joined mainland Florida to Key West, an overseas train they said couldn't be done.   Convertito will guide guests through a detailed look at some of the historic and unique treasures currently occupying the permanent exhibit located on the second floor and the reasons they were selected for the exhibition.

Topics include the original railroad car that debuted in the 2012 exhibit that transports visitors back to the early 1900s when Key West first connected to mainland Florida; Flagler's development of Florida's east coast and how his railway leapfrogged across the Florida Keys all the way to Key West; an oversized map of the Florida Keys; home video shot from the railroad in the 1920s; and newly acquired objects and ephemera from The Society's permanent collection. Society Curator Converito hopes these renovations will "provide a more comprehensive experience for visitors" and help them "wholly appreciate the engineering feat involved in constructing the Overseas Railway."   " Overseas to the Keys - Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway"  is a permanent exhibit and is generously supported by the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust, Thomas Kenan, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, and Lamont Harris. For reservations visit   www.kwahs.org/education/curator-tours . Key West Art & Historical Society ArtCamp! at Fort East Martello offers new sessions for teens aged 10-16
Pinhole Photography from Workshop Leader Jodell Roberts

This summer, youth aged 10-16 can join in on the cultural immersion fun while engaging in their passion for the arts and the environment with Key West Art & Historical Society's ArtCamp!, beginning June 12 th through June 30 th with three sessions: Teen Fossil Camp June 12- June 16, Pinhole Photography Camp: Technique June 19- June 23, and Pinhole Photography Camp: Creating a Body of Work June 26-June 30.  The Teen Fossil Camp guides students in learning how to sculpt and cast bones working with tools in clay, plaster, and sand, with an educational focus on science, math and critical thinking.  The Teen Pinhole Photography Camp sessions explore the physics of light, mechanics of the pinhole camera and elements of chemistry while gaining a foundation of art, design and the creative process through the world of film photography. These sessions encourage the teens and the more mature pre-teen to a week of creativity, empowerment, and educational excellence.    "Pinhole photography is great way for young people to have a hands-on, self-determining experience making photographs and art," says photographer and workshop leader Jodell Roberts. "Being actively involved in every aspect of the photographic process empowers the creator and imbues the art work with the essence of the artist."  Like the teens she will teach, Roberts was also introduced to photography as a teen at a summer photography workshop, and went on to attain her B.F.A. in Drawing and Printmaking from Florida Atlantic University.  She also assisted with the development of The Society's pinhole photography youth program from 2005 to 2010.   "We are excited to be working with Jodell Roberts, an aficionado of pinhole photography who has exhibited her work the Studios of Key West and Sodu Gallery," says Society Director of Education Adele Williams. "The camp will provide youth of the digital age with an insight into developing techniques similar to those used by photographic greats such Ansel Adams, Dorotea Lang and Arthur Rothstein."

The Society's ArtCamp! program, in operation for over thirty years and one of the oldest children's summer camps in the Keys, marks the organization's commitment to the many youth programming and educational initiatives that aim to "inspire a greater sense of place and historical understanding," says KWAHS Executive Director Michael Gieda. While ArtCamp! is successfully filled every year by children aged 5-12, the new program geared towards teens and more mature pre-teens marks their commitment to growing their educational programs, specifically the underserved parts of community.   "The majority of summer programs available in Key West target younger age groups," continues Williams. "KWAHS recognizes the demand for teen programming and hopes that by offering camps like Fossil Lab and Pinhole Photography that parents will have a more constructive outlet  for their teens."   The camp's weekly sessions run the creative gamut to touch upon a variety of art, culture and the humanities to get children thinking, moving and making:  Claymation; Pirate Camp; Teen Fossil Camp; Sand Sculpting Camp; Pinhole Photography for Teens- Technique; Pinhole Photography for Teens- Creating a Body of Work; Wrecker's Camp; Mask Making Camp; The Key Deer, the Rooster, and the Dolphin Camp; Praising the Palm Camp; Roller Coaster Camp; Summer Theatre Camp; and Mission Control Camp.  Campers also have the experience of exploring Fort East Martello, an enclosed Civil War-era fort stewarded by Key West Art & Historical Society and the location for the weekly camp sessions.  Each week will have auxiliary activities and excursions pertaining to the specific sessions, including field trips to local museums, nearby beaches and gardens-all highlighting the abundant history and cultural assets of our islands while encouraging and expanding students in their knowledge of their local community.

ArtCamp! runs from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday - Friday, with a varying fee depending on the camp, with a discount for Society Members. Included are all supplies, light snacks and weekly Friday pizza parties. Detailed descriptions of the Teen Camps and all of the ArtCamp!  sessions and registration information can be found at  KWAHS.ORG/LEARN  or by calling Adele Williams at 305-295-6616, extension 115.  Your museums.  Your community.  It takes an island.

Reef Relief's youth education programs grow thanks to disney conservation fund grant!

The Disney Conservation Fund focuses on reversing the decline of wildlife and increasing the time kids spend in nature. Since its inception in 1995, DCF has provided approximately $65 million to support conservation programs in 115 countries. For the 3rd year, The Disney Conservation Fund is supporting Reef Relief's Coral Reef Youth Education Program including the Discover Coral Reefs School Program and Coral Camp for Kids Program.
Reef Relief has provided the Discover Coral Reefs School Program to the Monroe County School District for over 23 years. This program supplements the Monroe County Curriculum by teaching students core marine science topics so they can better understand their local marine environment. This program primarily teaches students the value and importance of the local coral reef ecosystem, and ways that they can be positive stewards of the marine environment. This year, the Discover Coral Reef School Program has worked with a variety of new schools, now reaching 15 schools within Monroe County. The program is scheduled to teach more 4,700 students by the completion of the 2016-2017 school year.
Coral Camp for Kids provides an opportunity for children to learn more about coral reefs and marine science outside the classroom. Coral Camp is a nature-based education camp that focuses on marine science and offers interactive lessons and daily field trips, including 4 days of snorkeling at the sponge gardens, seagrass beds, and barrier coral reef. This upcoming summer will be the 9th consecutive year that Reef Relief has held Summer Coral Camp for Kids. This year, Reef Relief expanded this educational opportunity by providing a Spring Break Coral Camp. Reef Relief's Youth Education Programs have grown and expanded leaps and bounds in the 2016-2017 year thanks to the Disney Conservation Fund Grant. These goals would not have been met without the support of the locals in the Florida Keys community and generous grant donations. For more information: email: reefrelief@gmail.com, call (305) 294-3100 or visit reefrelief.org/ . Reef Relief is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to improving and protecting our coral reef ecosystem. Check us out at reefrelief.org
