Isn’t it amazing that sublime food is made up from the most simple of ingredients? Caramel, hollandaise, scampi, chocolate soufflé. What a miracle that the nations of this planet produce endless varieties of breads made from the same four staples: flour, salt, water (and sometimes leven).
Likewise with music: How is it possible that millions, no billions, of songs have been composed from the same few notes?
We’re drowning in sad news of late, but there are lifelines all around us. Most often, they are life’s simple ingredients that can reel us back in if we let them:
The curl at the nape of your daughter’s neck, waking to a cup of coffee your partner left on the nightstand, or that one hopeful leaf that (through the entire winter!) miraculously clings to the tree framed in your kitchen window.
Yes, there is a lot of bad out there at this point in time. But there are still these simple things that can make life sublime. So, before you get back to work, just take a breath. Stand still. And think: What’s your one good thing?
