FLCC adds new speakers to lineup
FLCC has added new presentations to its Pathways Speakers program, in which K-12 educators can connect with an FLCC faculty member who will visit their schools to talk about a particular subject. The presentations are meant to encourage discussions about college and careers and provide insights in planning for the future.  New topics since the series launch in September include the following:

The Engineering Profession: Selim Araci, professor of physics, will provide an overview of the engineering profession and its different disciplines using examples from real-life stories. He will also discuss the details of an engineering education and the wide range of career opportunities it provides.

How Academic Writing and Thinking Might Matter in the Non-Academic World: Humanities instructor Derrick Gentry will discuss how the standards and conventions of academic discourse might offer a model for how to conduct civil and productive communication in the public sphere. He will convey to students that you don't have to be an aspiring scholar in order to value this mode of thought and communication.

Letting Go While Holding On. A Quick Guide For Families: Sarah Whiffen, associate vice president for student affairs, discusses how to prepare students and families for the transitions to a college environment. She will help families understand the basic enrollment processes, introduce them to college lingo and provide an overview of how to maximize the services on a college campus.

Overcoming Adversity Through Curiosity and Self-Empowerment: Trista Merrill, professor of English, will address how people can use their own passions to control the things they can control when facing trauma and adversity.

Coming soon: Biotech summer camp information

FLCC will host another summer biotech workshop for high school students in July.

Students in last year's class learned biotechnology techniques through projects in which they tested genetically modified foods, learned how to work with mammalian cells in a sterile environment, and cultured the bacteria picked up on dropped food to test the "five-second rule."

More information and an application will appear in future issues of the high school eNews.
