Kyla Bruno of Fairport, a Penfield High School graduate, was among the FLCC graphic design students who created a label for FLCC-made wine and pitched it to her counterparts in the viticulture program. Viticulture students selected Kyla's design for their 2017 vintage, to be bottled in May. State OK's new hospitality, tourism programs
The state Education Department has approved new Finger Lakes Community College programming that provides more flexibility and choice for students pursuing careers in hospitality and tourism.

New degree:

New  one-year certificates:
The certificates can be taken alone or as a track within the degree program. Students also have the option to start in one of the one-year certificate programs and then work toward the two-year degree.  The new programming consolidates three current degree programs in tourism management, tourism studies and hotel and resort management.

"This new approach to educational programming allows younger students to explore options in hospitality and then specialize, using one of the three tracks," said Jamie Rotter, assistant professor of culinary arts.

Tourism in the Finger Lakes is a $3 billion per year industry supporting nearly 60,000 jobs, according to a report by Tourism Economics, an economic analysis firm based in Philadelphia.

Starting in January, new students will be able to choose the new hospitality and tourism management degree and related certificates when they file the online application available at  flcc.edu/apply . Prospective students can get more information during a visit to FLCC, which can be scheduled online at  flcc.edu/visit .

Important deadlines: Nursing, massage

While FLCC is an open-access institution, two of the college's 56 degree and certificate programs have competitive admission: nursing and therapeutic massage and integrated health care.

These two programs also have a Feb. 1 admissions deadline for first-round reviews. Applications received after Feb. 1 will still be considered for any remaining openings.

The nursing program is very competitive. Each year FLCC receives 500 or more applications for the 80 seats in the program. Admission is based on a point system. For more information on admission requirements for the point system, students should review the self evaluation sheet. More information about the nursing program and admission can be found on the frequently asked questions (FAQs) page on the website.

Information on the therapeutic massage program is also found on the website.

The application for all FLCC programs is available  online.
