Students tested the "five-second rule" by dropping different types of food in locations around campus and culturing the bacteria the foods picked up. Students from Naples, Phelps-Clifton Springs, Pittsford, Webster, Canandaigua, Wayne Central, and Spencerport also took part. See more photos on the FLCC Flickr site

Gemini signups underway
FLCC representatives will collect Gemini registrations and notarize forms at local high schools, starting this week, according to a schedule provided to each high school counseling office. Gemini instructors should have already received registration materials to pass out to students.

All students need to complete a certificate of residency form for the fall semester. Teachers should encourage students to get the form notarized prior to FLCC's visit to reduce their wait time and remind them that a photo ID and proof of address are required.

Gemini students are required to pay a $5 per credit hour fee, or $15 for a typical three-credit course. Students eligible for free and reduced meals should mark the box on the registration form, and the fee will be waived.

Students unable to meet with the FLCC representatives during the school visit can mail the registration materials and payment no later than Oct. 6. Juniors and seniors may take any Gemini course; sophomores may enroll in computer science, foreign language, general studies (GST) and health and physical education courses. For questions, email  secondaryprograms@flcc.edu  or call (585) 785-1669.

  • Architectural technology and building sciences
  • Information technology (networking and security)

FLCC speakers come right to the classroom
FLCC has just launched a Pathways Speakers Program to help high school students understand the connection between the curriculum and the real world of work and to provide teachers with curriculum-related expertise.

The program is meant to help students understand the full range of options available to them after high school.  Speakers will go directly to schools to give presentations in classrooms and small group settings. The list of speakers and topics is on the FLCC website at flcc.edu/pathways.

Teachers can contact the speakers directly through the website to arrange a mutually convenient day and time.

Communicating with Spanish-speaking families
The Conversational Spanish class will meet at the Geneva Campus Center.
FLCC will offer an evening conversational Spanish class, starting Oct. 3, to help educators, health care workers and others communicate more effectively with Spanish-speakers.

Teachers can receive Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credit through FLCC for this program and must provide notice upon registration that they would like to receive a certificate.

Conversational Spanish runs Tuesdays from Oct. 3 through Nov. 28, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the FLCC Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney St., room 144. There is no class on Nov. 21 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The class is an outgrowth of a common concern among members of Community Agencies and Schools Together (CAAST) about communicating with Spanish speakers. For example, elementary students may pick up English quickly but their parents struggle in conversations with teachers.

The cost for the 8-week class is $140 per person. Space is limited to ensure enough time for students to practice speaking. To enroll, email to andrea.badger@flcc.edu or call (585) 785-1906.
