'Olelo Educator's Training: June 19 - 20
This class will cover 'Olelo's basic media production training and adds three basic concepts of integrating media throughout the course. Enrollment also gains you access to one-on-one staff mentoring time to assist with media production process, producing, equipment, as well as navigating the possibilities of your engagement with 'Olelo.  Five basic production concepts will be covered; Communication, Production process, W.A.F.F.L.E.S. (the acronym used by 'Olelo on how to engage various recording technology), the power of Editing and Deliverables. They begin with visual storytelling, where you learn to engage your target audience and the importance of pre-production. Learn about editing (Final Cut Pro X), why it is such a powerful tool and how deliverables shape the pre-production process. Class completion certifies you as an 'Olelo Producer. In-class exercises include two column script and storyboard creation, a video scavenger hunt (accessing all levels of camera equipment) and editing/creating a PSA from a two column script using Final Cut Pro X.

Spirit of Community Awards to 2 Hawai'i Students
Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals honored 102 young Americans in Washington, D.C., as State Honorees in the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. These high school and middle level students were chosen for their outstanding achievement in community service. Among the 102, 2 were from Hawai'i, and HAIS member schools: Mahealani Sims-Tulba, 18, from Ewa Beach and a senior at Sacred Hearts Academy; and Grace Kennedy, 13, from Kailua, and in 8th grade at St. Anthony School Kailua.

HAIS & HONOLULU Magazine Collaboration: Education Cheat Sheet

A new blog post was released on May 21, titled " Education Cheat Sheet: Our Top Five."  HONOLULU Magazine has pulled the five Education Cheat Sheets articles that were the most popular with their readers, in no particular order, so you can catch up on your education when you have a few minutes.  You can also find this article (and past HAIS & HONOLULU Magazine collaborations) on  our website .
HSDM Grants Available: Aug. 31
The Hawai'i Educational Networking Consortium (HENC) has announced that Hawai'i Schools Digital Media (HSDM) Grants are now available for the 2018/19 school year. $1,000 to $3,000 per school each year in support of curricular or extracurricular programs, student-produced digital media and video. For more information or to apply, please see this Flyer or go to their website.

8th Annual EMA Meeting: Sept. 25
Save the Date for the 8th Annual Enrollment Management Association (EMA) Meeting that will take place on September 25 at St. Louis School. This year's fall meeting will feature guest speaker Alexandra Scott. She will be speaking about "The Intersection of Gender Identity, Social Justice, and Mindfulness: How the Emergence of Transgender and Gender Non-Binary Children and Adults Creates a New Paradigm in Schools."  For more information, please view the attached Flyer. Yoga Ed Tools for Teachers Workshop: Sept. 27
This Yoga Ed. workshop will equip teachers with a broad variety of basic principles and tools to implement short yoga breaks with  children or teens. Participants will learn and practice yoga tools to effectively promote health, learning, and achievement.  This workshop can provide a deeper understanding of how to identify challenging times during a child  or teen's day, and successfully utilize yoga tools to shift them into a more positive state of mind. LSOTF Pre-Conference November  7
School teams will explore how to co-create learner centered envi ronments that intentionally integrate student and teacher voice. A team of at least 3 individuals is required for participation and student and  teacher participation on each team is encouraged. Individuals wishing to participate should email  Deanna D'Olier , to be added to the waitlist.

LSOTF Track @ SOTF X November 8 & 9
The LSOTF track will include specific featured speakers and workshop sessions during the Schools of the Future Conference that will allow pre-conference attendees to further build upon ideas/plans developed during the pre-conference. The sessions in the track will be open to pre-conference attendees, school leaders and aspiring education leaders. The track will culminate with a reflection session at the end of Day 2 for those who participated in the pre-conference. This will both provide an opportunity to debrief the experience, and to plan for next steps to keep our community connected.

The 24th Annual Hawai'i Advanced Placement Summer Institute 2018 (APSI) is coming up this June at Hawai'i Pacific University. This four-day professional development event brings together colleagues from all over the world to discuss course-specific content, instructional strategies, course organization and methods for promoting greater student participation. Sessions led by College Board-endorsed subject experts equip new and experienced educators with effective resources and best practices to bring back to their schools. SIAM
SIAM/MfA Workshop: July 8
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and Math for America (MfA) have teamed up to present a workshop, geared to high school math teachers, to introduce and expand knowledge about math modeling techniques for solving real, open-ended problems.  This session will prepare attendees to understand and teach the process of math modeling.  Take away materials will be provided, as well as certificates of participation.  A stipend of $50 will be provided to each of the first 60 registrants. Travel support will be available to registrants living 51 miles or more away, based on distance, in amounts ranging from $25 to $150.

Phonics
Phonics Plus: July 10 - 14
The course will introduce teachers to the Phonics Plus Method, which provides accurate and  practical ways to teach using phonics as a foundation for spelling, speaking, reading, and writing. Participants will be taught the sounds of the 70 common phonograms, spelling rules, and proper handwriting skills, based on the Writing Road to Reading textbook. The intensive 5-day course will cover teaching language arts from kindergarten to second grade. For more information, please see their Flyer.

EdCamp West Oahu: July 14
Registration is now open for the first annual Edcamp West Oahu happening this summer. Registration is free and includes coffee, lunch, lots of learning, and prizes to give away. EdCamps are "UNconferences" that are free, vendor-free, and participant-driven PD events where the attendees determine the topics and facilitate the sessions, which are conversations - not presentations. Teaching Historical Thinking Workshops: July 18 - 20
The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities and Chaminade History Center are holding a series of three one-day teacher workshops in July on the islands of Maui, Hawai'i, and O'ahu, featuring renown classroom teacher and best selling author Bruce Lesh, " Teaching Historical Thinking: Why Won't You Just Tell Us the Answer? " Teachers will engage in hands-on activities focused on historical thinking skills and the use of historical investigations to teach history. Recommended for middle and high school teachers. Global Educator Strand:  July 23 - 25
This 3-day session focuses on the sharing of school curriculum, vision and pedagogical alignments around personalized, product-oriented global learning. Through a facilitated design process, participants collaborate on projects with educators from more than 25 schools in 10 countries. Attendees also connect with students participating in the  Student Global Leadership Institute  to observe and interact with their experiences with global change making. The goal of this design is to create opportunities for conversations and collaborations to take place, so that educators can return to their schools with new programming ideas. Multisensory Writing: July 24 - 25
Multisensory Writing: Framing Your Thoughts/Project Read module - The first part of this workshop uses a systematic multisensory approach to teach the role of words in composing a sentence and to recognize patterns such as bare bone sentences, subject describers, and predicate expanders. During the second part, participants practice applying sentence development around the "key point" of different types of paragraph structures. Additional information and registration  here.

Hawai'i Pacific University will be hosting an Esports Summer Camp from July 10th - 13th at the Esports Arena at Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Are you a competitive gamer? Are you interested in learning more about the billion-dollar business of Esports? The main gaming components will focus on League of Legends, Virtual Reality and the evolution of competitive Esports at the collegiate level. There will be guest speakers, as well as faculty, staff and student instructing on different aspects of Esports. "Acts of Aloha" Scholarship for 'Oahu Students: Aug. 5
The Ohana Broadcast Company, along with partners Alaska Airlines, First Insurance Company of Hawai'i, and Rainbow Drive-In, has announced a new scholarship opportunity for 'Oahu high school juniors and seniors, and college students. One scholarship will be awarded in 2018 to someone who has performed 'acts of aloha,' the goal being to promote acts of kindness and spreading aloha. The scholarship includes $3000 and roundtrip air travel to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies. The recipient will be announced no later than August 13. Senator Brian Schatz's office is currently accepting applications for both their High School Internship Program and their U.S. Service Academy Nominations. Both are open to students from all islands. Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat: Sept. 17 - 20
The Cat in the Hat creates a day full of wacky adventure, wondrous balancing feats, and zany rhymes. It all seems under control until the Cat unleashes Thing 1 and Thing 2, wreaking havoc on the house and leaving the children to wonder what mother will say when she returns home. Doctor Seuss's classic comes to life on stage in an action-packed romp. Directed by UHM Theatre MFA recipient and Honolulu Theatre for Youth company member, Nathaniel Niemi.

Sanford Programs has announced its Spring 2018 Request for Proposals. S upported by a gift from philanthropist and businessman Denny Sanford, they anticipate awarding $2 million in Sanford Grants, spread across their three signature programs: Harmony, Inspire, and the
Sanford Institute of Philanthropy.
