Special Event! An Evening with Michael Thompson and Rob Evans: The Pressured Child

HAIS, in partnership with Punahou School, is pleased to present a special presentation for parents & educators from HAIS member schools. "The Pressured Child" is, in fact, a presentation for "pressured parents" who have forgotten what school is actually like. It is a talk for parents who are gripped by worries and misapprehensions about their children's life in school. This presentation will address the psychological journey that children experience during their thirteen years in school. Parents will be reminded that children are almost never judging themselves by grades: they are always monitoring their own development and constantly searching for three things: connection, recognition and a sense of power. Each journey has its own different pressures. Every child is constantly developing strategies for coping with the pressures that he or she feels.

HAIS Schools Re-Use: Free Computers

HAIS has 7 PC computers and 1 iMac computer, all perfect for classroom work and ready for use. The 7 PCs all have the same specs, which are as follows: Core i5-2400, 3.1GHz processor, 3GB RAM. The iMac is a 20-inch (late 2006), with Intel Core 2 Duo (2.16 GHz), 1GB RAM, and 250 GB hard drive. They are in very good condition.

There are also 10 monitors and 6 keyboards, all standard, all ready to use. Please call or email the HAIS office if you're interested, as they will be given away on a first-come first-serve basis.

Early Childhood Educators Workshop: Feb. 17

There will be a FREE early childhood educators workshop, entitled "Addressing the Nature of Challenging Behavior in Young Children," on Hawai'i Island, February 17. The workshop will consist of presentations by experts about classroom strategies, working with parents and teaching pro-social behavior, along with opportunities for conversations to support the social-emotional growth of our early learners and is appropriate for pre-school through grade 3 educators. 2018 Global Issues Network Conference: Mar. 9 - 11

The 2nd annual Hawai'i Global Issues Network Conference will take place March 9 - 11 at Le Jardin Academy. GIN is an international organization that facilitates conferences around the world for students to collaborate on and engage in the issues our society is currently facing to attempt to come up with real solutions to problems on both a local and global scale. Today, GIN includes students from over 500 schools across the world.This year's theme is Ka Po'aiapuni Wai, "the water cycle," which connects all living things. The three-day conference will include student workshops, keynote speakers, breakout sessions, a film showing, networking and collaboration opportunities, and overnight camping. Travel Grants

HAIS will award a limited number of travel grants, on a first come, first served basis to Neighbor Island member schools. Monies awarded must be used to offset airfare and hotel expenses, and will range from $450 - $1350, for 1 to 3 attendees, per school. Upon completion and approval of the Application Form , further details of the grant procedure will be communicated to the award recipients. Kamehameha Middle School Parent Workshop: Feb. 1

Jeff Eben is an award-winning educator, leader, author and speaker. A promising young athlete with dreams of a college football scholarship, Jeff sustained a catastrophic injury at 16 that left him paralyzed and tasked with building his life and career in a wheelchair. Despite his injury, Jeff enjoyed a 30 year career in public education that included coaching football and basketball, teaching, and administration. His powerful story and unique philosophy of "Feel The Love" has afforded him the opportunity to speak around the world. Come join us as Jeff Eben shares his story of resiliency and hope and shares with parents how to instill a spirit of resiliency and hope within their child. MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge: Feb. 23

MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is the Internet-based competition for high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing STEM majors and careers. The contest is open to all U.S. students, and will award top teams this year with $100,000 in scholarships toward the pursuit of higher education. Working in teams of 3-5, participants come up with their best solution to an open-ended, math-modeling problem focused on a realistic issue in 14 hours. 2018 Hawai'i STEM Conference: Apr. 10 - 11

The Women in Technology Project (WIT) has announced the 2018 9th Annual Hawai'i STEM Conference. They invite teachers and students to register to attend, as well as organizations to participate through sponsorship, break-out session presentations, and interactive exhibitor playg rounds. Contributing sponsors will allow over 1,000 students and teachers who are positively impacting communities to continue to be introduced to, and continue to be exposed to, innovative technologies. The conference will be held April 10 - 11 at the Hawai'i Convention Center on Oahu. Sanford Harmony SEL Seminar: Feb. 7

This webinar will be hosted by speaker Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, EdD, neuroscientist from the University of Southern California.

Today's children are living in an age marked by unprecedented access to entertainment and educational technology, yet are expected to spend more time focused on academic tasks. How do these forces shape children's social and intellectual development and what can educators and parents do to support children's healthy social and moral development, meaningful learning, and academic success? By examining neuroimaging data from adults alongside creative and scientific works by children, Dr. Immordino-Yang will show how the emotions children and adolescents feel in their close social relationships are central for academic development and learning.

Shadow A Student Challenge: Feb. 19 - Mar. 2

From February 19th to March 2nd, school leaders across the world will clear their calendars, silence their walkie-talkies, throw on sneakers, and immerse themselves in student life for a day. This crash course in empathy will help school leaders see their own schools from a student's point of view and take action for positive change. Every student experience matters, and each shadow experience sends the message that student voice matters.

Math Learning Difficulties Workshop: Mar. 3

Math difficulties range in severity and topic areas, and may be further complicated by co-existing difficulties in language comprehension. In this workshop held by HIDA ( Hawai'i branch of the International Dyslexia Association), classroom teachers, tutors, and homeschool parents of children (grades 3-12) will learn strategies to help remedy some common math difficulties their students encounter. Participants will receive manipulatives to take/use in helping students with math learning difficulties. This year will be the first ever Google Summit for Education on Kauai. Ethnomathematics Graduate Certificate: Feb. 15

An invitation to all teachers, not just math, to earn a graduate certificate in Ethnomathematics from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa College of Education in 11 months. Ethnomathematics is the integration of Indigenous wisdom and 21st century technology through real-world applications of mathematics that are relevant, contextualized, and sustainable.
