HAIS Member Meeting & Reception: May 9
The  HAIS Board of Directors invites HAIS member Heads of Schools to the 2018 Annual Member Meeting & Reception, to be held at the Pacific Club. Attendees can connect with current and incoming HAIS Board Members, hear about the 2017-2018 year recap, learn about upcoming programs and initiatives for the 2018-2019 year, and network with other HAIS member school heads. 'Olelo Educator's Training: June 19 - 20
This class will cover 'Olelo's basic media production training and adds three basic concepts of integrating media throughout the course. Enrollment also gains you access to one-on-one staff mentoring time to assist with media production process, producing, equipment, as well as navigating the possibilities of your engagement with 'Olelo.  Five basic production concepts will be covered; Communication, Production process, W.A.F.F.L.E.S. (the acronym used by 'Olelo on how to engage various recording technology), the power of Editing and Deliverables. They begin with visual storytelling, where you learn to engage your target audience and the importance of pre-production. Learn about editing (Final Cut Pro X), why it is such a powerful tool and how deliverables shape the pre-production process. Class completion certifies you as an 'Olelo Producer. In-class exercises include two column script and storyboard creation, a video scavenger hunt (accessing all levels of camera equipment) and editing/creating a PSA from a two column script using Final Cut Pro X.

HSDM Grants Available: Aug. 31
The Hawai'i Educational Networking Consortium (HENC) has announced that Hawai'i Schools Digital Media (HSDM) Grants are now available for the 2018/19 school year. $1,000 to $3,000 per school each year in support of curricular or extracurricular programs, student-produced digital media and video. For more information or to apply, please see this Flyer or go to their website.

Yoga Ed Tools for Teachers Workshop: Sept. 27
This Yoga Ed. workshop will equip teachers with a broad variety of basic principles and tools to implement short yoga breaks with  children or teens. Participants will learn and practice yoga tools to effectively promote health, learning, and achievement.  This workshop can provide a deeper understanding of how to identify challenging times during a child  or teen's day, and successfully utilize yoga tools to shift them into a more positive state of mind. BPF Changemakers Challenges: starts May
The BPF Changemakers are a new free new campaign for students who are interested in changing Hawaii's dependence on fossil fuels. This program is for all middle and high school students statewide.  Challenges will be announced through their google  site , email, and Instagram to those who sign up. Prizes will be given away for each energy awareness challenge completed in hopes of fostering a community of true energy ambassadors. Clean energy challenges start the first week of May. Those interested in participating can sign up here, or go their website for more information.  Follow their Instagram @BPF_Changemakers and tag a post with #BPFChangemakers. Blue Planet Foundation's Griffith Jurgens is available to come speak with small groups or classes about the program (10-15 minute presentation); please contact him with any questions.
Preschool Open Doors Application Period: May 1 - 31
The   Preschool Open Doors (POD) application period is May 1 - May 31. Applications received during this period will be considered for preschool participation during July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019.  The POD Application Packet is available May 1, 2018 through May 31, 2018. 'Oahu Charity Walk: May 19
On Saturday, May 19th,  Hawai'i Arts Alliance  will join with the Hawai'i Visitor Industry and local businesses to raise money for local causes, including Arts in education.  The walk is a 5.25 mile course through Waikiki, lined with entertainment and food. Teens & Exploitation in Hawai'i Presentation: May 31
This prevention-based Education Program is Ho'ola Na Pa's version of stranger danger for youth to young adult in the 21st century. This program teaches what sex trafficking is, what the warning signs are, why it is common in Hawai'i and how to get help. It also goes over the danger of social media and gaming and reinforces using privacy settings. All - t weens , teens, teachers, counselors, specialists, admin, parents, service providers, law enforcement - are welcome, and those who register beforehand will get a free door prize ticket. Akahi Leadership Program: June 12 - June 30
St. Andrew's Schools are currently collaborating with Kona Earth Enrichment Program (KEEP) on the Akahi Leadership Program, a 3-week, all-girls program at Hue Hue Ranch on the Big Island. Designed to foster authentic, adaptive leadership, and promote the idea of a future with human society harmonized with the natural world, the program at the Ranch will give students the opportunity to live off the land and learn basics of permaculture and nature observation. Leadership training includes communication skills, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.  For more information, please contact Sophie Halliday, the Director of Education Programs at St. Andrews; to learn about scholarship opportunities, please contact KEEP. Annual Goodwill Goes GLAM: July 20 - 22
Goodwill will once again be hosting their Annual Goodwill Goes GLAM! event, presented by Bank of Hawai'i Foundation at the Blaisdell this summer. They're asking for volunteers to help work the event; volunteers can be scheduled in groups to allow large groups of students and family to volunteer on the same day/shift.
Volunteers will receive Free Event Admission on the day they volunteer, free volunteer T-Shirt, 20% discount coupon, and light snacks during their shift. The Retail Days are Friday, July 20, 2018 - Sunday, July 22, 2018.  For more information, please see their website.

"Acts of Aloha" Scholarship for 'Oahu Students: Aug. 5
The Ohana Broadcast Company, along with partners Alaska Airlines, First Insurance Company of Hawai'i, and Rainbow Drive-In, has announced a new scholarship opportunity for 'Oahu high school juniors and seniors, and college students. One scholarship will be awarded in 2018 to someone who has performed 'acts of aloha,' the goal being to promote acts of kindness and spreading aloha. The scholarship includes $3000 and roundtrip air travel to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies. The recipient will be announced no later than August 13. Wet'n'Wild Teacher Appreciation Month: May

For the entire month of May, State of Hawai'i educators (Hawai'i DOE teachers and HAIS teachers) receive free admission to the park just by showing their school ID that shows they are a teacher. DOE and HAIS educators also receive discounted admissions for their family members and friends at $29.99 each + tax ($20 OFF General Admission). In addition to the free and discounted admission,  Wet'n'Wild Hawaii will  extend a special season pass rate of $45 each (savings of $10 OFF regular price).

SEL Competence Assessment Design Challenge: May 4
The Assessment Work Group has launched the 2nd Annual Design Challenge, a  competition for direct assessments of student social and emotional learning . The  Challenge  will use lessons learned from the first Design Challenge and place a particular focus on addressing practitioners' assessment needs. KS Education Technology Conference: June 5 - 6
The  deadline is approaching for the upcoming KS Education Tech. Conference, entitled "Disrupt 2018."   Arthur Renowitsky and Eugene Yoon  will be teaming up as keynote speakers for the conference. The 24th Annual Hawai'i Advanced Placement Summer Institute 2018 (APSI) is coming up this June at Hawai'i Pacific University. This four-day professional development event brings together colleagues from all over the world to discuss course-specific content, instructional strategies, course organization and methods for promoting greater student participation. Sessions led by College Board-endorsed subject experts equip new and experienced educators with effective resources and best practices to bring back to their schools. Global Educator Strand:  July 23 - 25
This 3-day session focuses on the sharing of school curriculum, vision and pedagogical alignments around personalized, product-oriented global learning. Through a facilitated design process, participants collaborate on projects with educators from more than 25 schools in 10 countries. Attendees also connect with students participating in the  Student Global Leadership Institute  to observe and interact with their experiences with global change making. The goal of this design is to create opportunities for conversations and collaborations to take place, so that educators can return to their schools with new programming ideas. 8th Annual EMA Meeting: Sept. 25
Save the Date for the 8th Annual Enrollment Management (EMA) Meeting that will take place on September 25 at St. Louis School. This year's fall meeting will feature guest speaker Alexandra Scott.
