The Readings for this Sunday
Proper 19 Track 2
In our Hebrew Bible story the people worship an idol, but Moses’ prayer saves them from the Lord’s punishment. In one way or another this pattern is repeated throughout Israel’s history. The people have just made a solemn covenant with God, but quickly they lose faith and want to put their trust in some more tangible and useful religion. In this case the object of their worship is a bull-calf, a divinity among the Canaanites and a symbol of strength and virility. Moses intercedes against the Lord’s wrath and reminds him of his past help and commitment to this people.
A confession of sin and guilt and a prayer for a clean heart.
In this lesson Paul gives thanks to the Lord Jesus and praise to God for the salvation of sinners, among whom Paul has led the way. The apostle (or a later author writing for him) recalls his acts of persecution and blasphemy against Jesus. But the Lord was merciful to him in his ignorance and unbelief, as he has been to all who have come in faith to him.
In the gospel Jesus tells the two parables of the finding of the lost sheep and the lost coin. The setting helps us to understand that Jesus may have told the story about the lost sheep to defend his acts of reaching out to share the invitation of the reign of God with those often regarded as beyond God’s concern. In several ways it would be foolish to leave many sheep to go after one stray, but the parable emphasizes the lengths to which both Jesus and God will go to bring back one who is missing. The second story illustrates a related theme of the first: the great joy that is experienced when the lost is found.

Navigating Health and End-of-Life Care Documents:
Which Ones Do You Really Need?
No one ever plans to be sick or disabled. Yet, it's this kind of planning that can make all the difference - especially in an emergency. There are many different legal documents that can help you plan how your affairs will be handled in the future. Many of these documents have names that sound alike and because state laws vary, the rules, requirements and forms can vary by State.
An Attorney-at-Law (Anita Rufus) who specializes in end-of-life issues, will provide an overview of the health and end-of-life care documents that can be used to get your affairs in order. These documents include a durable and general power of attorney, advance directives, living wills, trusts, physicians orders for life-sustaining treatment, etc. Copies of the pamphlet,
The Five Wishes
, will be available and time will be allotted for questions and answers.
This is really going to be beneficial to people! ~Rev. Patricia

Collect for Sunday
O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

September is National Recovery Month
. The Episcopal Church is supportive of those groups and organizations that work for the health and well-being of those dealing, day-by-day, with addiction and recovery. ~Fr. Dan
For the Victims of Addiction
O blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and persevering love.
Amen. ~BCP 831

To be noted now: Listening Sessions
Bishop Susan has scheduled a series of
listening sessions
to be held around the diocese the week of September 23 through September 30. She writes:
"These listening sessions are part of my work in getting to know the diocese more completely. With the help of an outside facilitator who will moderate the sessions I will listen to your thoughts about opportunities for community building, your hopes, dreams, and concerns that will lead us into clearer discernment around God’s call to us and our ministry in our communities."
The nearest
Listening Session
to St. Hugh's is
in Palm Springs
(at St. Paul of the Desert Episcopal Church)
on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
. Sessions will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Registration is required. The complete story and registration information are
here
.

|
Our Bishop Susan has called us to prayer as part of the upcoming Listening Sessions:
I have … called the diocese to a nine-day Season of Prayer (a novena), lasting from
September 14 to September 22
, as we ask for God’s guidance in discerning our vision and mission. We have provided a prayer guide with scriptures, prayers, and discussion questions for each day during the nine-day period, appropriate for individual or group devotions.
~Bishop Susan
Please make the time to participate in this 9-day Season of Prayer. ~Fr. Dan

Your gift to St. Hugh's makes a difference. It allows us to be open so that "
all who seek God here may find God, and be filled with God's joy and peace."
It is always the right time. Donate to the mission and ministry of St. Hugh's. Your gifts--of time, talent, and treasure--make it possible to be present in Idyllwild so that we can both invite and then "enable questioning, open-minded people to discover for themselves, the significance of Jesus Christ."
