A Great Cloud of Witnesses
All Saints at St. Hugh's
All Saints Sunday at St. Hugh's, 2018
On Sunday, August 18, 2019, we heard the text from Hebrews 12:1-2:
THEREFORE THEN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us, 2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection] .
Amplified Bible (2015)

I asked: Who do you turn to in the "great cloud of witnesses" for encouragement, prayer, strength, wisdom?

I pointed to our Church Calendar of Saints (a work in progress) entitled A Great Cloud of Witnesses and quoted from the Introduction "The saints encourage us; they pray for us; they strengthen us." Likewise, I encouraged you to learn more about the women and men who are part of our great cloud of witnesses—finding encouragement, strength, and wisdom for yourself as you learn about the lives they led as they followed Jesus on the Way.

The story of Thomas Gallaudet and Henry Winter Syle touches my heart and encourages me in my journey—no matter the obstacles. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, of course, continues to influence Christian Theology today. And, what do you know about the Desert Fathers and Mothers? Keep learning. ~Fr. Dan

Would you like to learn more about Christian faith or strengthen understanding of the  Episcopal Church  ? Do you long for deeper engagement with holy scripture? Are you hungering to learn with others? The diocesan  School for Ministry  may be for you.

The school will soon begin its seventh year. Year by year, the School for Ministry grows in strength and number as it lives more fully into the vision of a local school for formation and theological training.

While the School for Ministry primarily draws students discerning a call to ordained ministry, this community of learning includes all adult learners, particularly those who are hungry to learn about Biblical study, church history, Christian spirituality, ethics, pastoral care and liturgics, to name a few.

Now that we have welcomed a new diocesan bishop, the Rt. Rev. Susan Brown Snook, I and other diocesan leaders welcome her vision for how the School for Ministry can best support local formation for both those discerning diaconal or priestly vocations and for members of our geographically large diocese who are hungry to learn more and enhance their practice of ministry.

To that end, we will explore technology to offer remote teaching and learning. We will also explore possibilities for partnership with accredited seminaries, so that some of the needs that cannot be met by the School for Ministry might be met in partnership.
~ The Rev. Laura Sheridan-Campbell , D.Min
Rector, School for Ministry

The Way of Love
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has invited Episcopalians (and any who would choose to follow Jesus) to embark on the Way of Love introduced by Jesus in his ministry. Join me in the practices that make up the Way of Love. ~Fr. Dan

The Way of Love is a way of life. More than a program or curriculum, it is an intentional commitment to a set of practices. It's a commitment to follow Jesus: Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest.

Documents You May Not
Want To Talk About
But should …
Navigating Health and End-of-Life Care Documents:
Which Ones Do You Really Need?

On Tuesday, September 24th 11:45 - 12:30
At St. Margaret's Episcopal Church
Karns Hall
Palm Desert, CA

No one ever plans to be sick or disabled. Yet, it's this kind of planning that can make all the difference - especially in an emergency. There are many different legal documents that can help you plan how your affairs will be handled in the future. Many of these documents have names that sound alike and because state laws vary, the rules, requirements and forms can vary by State.

Patricia Riley, MBA, Director of Community Relations for Vista Cove at Rancho Mirage and Anita Rufus, an Attorney-at-Law who specializes in end-of-life issues, will provide an overview of the health and end-of-life care documents that can be used to get your affairs in order. These documents include a durable and general power of attorney, advance directives, living wills, trust, physicians orders for life-sustaining treatment, etc. Copies of the pamphlet, The Five Wishes , will be available and time will be allotted for questions and answers.

This is really going to be beneficial to people! ~Rev. Patricia
