A Great Cloud of Witnesses
|
|
Who do you turn to in the "great cloud of witnesses" for encouragement, prayer, strength, wisdom?
This is a week full of witnesses to missionary zeal, including martyrdom. Each story, each witness commemorated this week reveals what the love of God, what the cost of discipleship may call forth from pretty ordinary folk like you and me. David Pendleton Oakerhater began his journey to Christ as an "honored Cheyenne warrior." The Martyrs of New Guinea were martyred not in the first centuries of Christianity but in the Twentieth Century. Prudence was driven out of Connecticut because she dared to teach African American girls. Even Mark Twain got involved in her story. Paul Jones was forced to resign as Bishop of Utah because of his pacifism. Father Aglipay has quite a journey as a Christ follower. And Elie Naud is part of the story of the work still carried on by Trinity (Episcopal) Church, Wall Street. I encourage you to follow the links to find out more. Follow the links and be encouraged in your journey as a Christ Follower (disciple). ~Fr. Dan
Here is the Calendar for September 1 - September 7
- 1 David Pendleton Oakerhater, Deacon and Missionary, 1931
- 2 The Martyrs of New Guinea, 1942
- 3 Prudence Crandall, Teacher and Prophetic Witness, 1890
- 4 Paul Jones, 1941
- 5 Gregorio Aglipay, Priest and Founder of the Philippine Independent Church, 1940
- 7 Elie Naud, Huguenot Witness to the Faith, 1722

This week's edition of
Salt & Light (week of September 1)
invites you to consider what we (ministers) mean when we talk about "Christian Formation" rather than Christian Education or Religious Education. Filled with links to additional resources, consider this an invitation to "keep learning" (and not just in a classroom, personal study, or library). ~Fr. Dan

Our Bishop Susan has called us to prayer as part of the upcoming Listening Sessions:
I have … called the diocese to a nine-day Season of Prayer (a novena), lasting from
September 14 to September 22
, as we ask for God’s guidance in discerning our vision and mission. We have provided a prayer guide with scriptures, prayers, and discussion questions for each day during the nine-day period, appropriate for individual or group devotions.
~Bishop Susan
Please consider participating in this 9-day Season of Prayer. ~Fr. Dan

From a previous edition of Salt & Light …
Dear Friends in Christ,
I invite you to take part in listening sessions to be held around the diocese the week of September 23 through September 30. These listening sessions are part of my work in getting to know the diocese more completely. With the help of an outside facilitator who will moderate the sessions I will listen to your thoughts about opportunities for community building, your hopes, dreams, and concerns that will lead us into clearer discernment around God’s call to us and our ministry in our communities.
~Bishop Susan
Note:
the nearest listening session to us is at
St. Paul's in Palm Springs on Friday, September 27
(7-9 PM,
registration required

Navigating Health and End-of-Life Care Documents:
Which Ones Do You Really Need?
On Tuesday, September 24th 11:45 - 12:30
At St. Margaret's Episcopal Church
Karns Hall
Palm Desert, CA
No one ever plans to be sick or disabled. Yet, it's this kind of planning that can make all the difference - especially in an emergency. There are many different legal documents that can help you plan how your affairs will be handled in the future. Many of these documents have names that sound alike and because state laws vary, the rules, requirements and forms can vary by State.
Patricia Riley, MBA, Director of Community Relations for Vista Cove at Rancho Mirage and Anita Rufus, an Attorney-at-Law who specializes in end-of-life issues, will provide an overview of the health and end-of-life care documents that can be used to get your affairs in order. These documents include a durable and general power of attorney, advance directives, living wills, trust, physicians orders for life-sustaining treatment, etc. Copies of the pamphlet,
The Five Wishes
, will be available and time will be allotted for questions and answers.
This is really going to be beneficial to people!
~Rev. Patricia

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has invited Episcopalians (and any who would choose to follow Jesus) to embark on the Way of Love introduced by Jesus in his ministry. Join me in the practices that make up the Way of Love. ~Fr. Dan
The Way of Love is a way of life. More than a program or curriculum, it is an intentional commitment to a set of practices. It's a commitment to follow Jesus: Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest.
