A Great Cloud of Witnesses
Who do you turn to in the "great cloud of witnesses" for encouragement, prayer, strength, wisdom?

A hymn writer, a composer, a teacher and philosopher, a church planter, a couple of bishops, and a day designated as a " Major Feast " in our church calendar will inspire your own work as a Christ-follower. But the commemoration of faithful witness that caught my heart this week is the self-sacrificing love of Sister Constance and Her Companions remembered as the "Martyrs of Memphis" (September 9th).

Salt & Light
Add your prayers and thoughts
in forming our new Diocesan Strategic Plan
This week's edition of  Salt & Light (week of September 8) invites our participation in Listening Sessions, demographic research, prayer, and strategic planning.

" As one of her first acts, Bishop Susan Brown Snook has called for a revised strategic plan for the Diocese of San Diego. This new plan will build upon our previous strategic plan of 2012 and amplify our vision of spreading the fearless love of Jesus Christ throughout our diocese. … A pre-planning work group has begun to gather research materials at the national, regional, diocesan, and congregational levels to understand our current cultural contexts as well as the challenges and opportunities they present. As part of that research, Holy Cow consultant Susan Czolgosz will facilitate a number of  listening sessions  throughout the diocese in late September. … We also ask each church and mission to help with this research. … As we work on this strategic plan, we ask for your prayers for God’s guidance and wisdom.  Proverbs 16:3  reminds us that as long as we commit our work to God, our plans will be established. If we remain focused on discerning God’s will and God’s timing, our minds and spirits will remain open to inspirations arising from every corner of our diocese." A Season of Prayer
Our Bishop Susan has called us to prayer as part of the upcoming Listening Sessions:
I have … called the diocese to a nine-day Season of Prayer (a novena), lasting from   September 14 to September 22  , as we ask for God’s guidance in discerning our vision and mission. We have provided a prayer guide with scriptures, prayers, and discussion questions for each day during the nine-day period, appropriate for individual or group devotions.  ~Bishop Susan

Please participate in this 9-day Season of Prayer. The benefits of your prayers, and the prayers of many will be beyond what we can ask or imagine. ~Fr. Dan
Listening Sessions
From a previous edition of Salt & Light …
Dear Friends in Christ,
I invite you to take part in listening sessions to be held around the diocese the week of September 23 through September 30. These listening sessions are part of my work in getting to know the diocese more completely. With the help of an outside facilitator who will moderate the sessions I will listen to your thoughts about opportunities for community building, your hopes, dreams, and concerns that will lead us into clearer discernment around God’s call to us and our ministry in our communities.  ~Bishop Susan

To read more about the Listening Sessions and to register:  Salt & Light for the week of August 18th

Note:  the nearest listening session to us is at  St. Paul's in Palm Springs on Friday, September 27  (7-9 PM,  registration required  )

Documents You May Not
Want To Talk About
But should
Navigating Health and End-of-Life Care Documents:
Which Ones Do You Really Need?

On Tuesday, September 24th 11:45 - 12:30
At St. Margaret's Episcopal Church
Karns Hall
Palm Desert, CA

No one ever plans to be sick or disabled. Yet, it's this kind of planning that can make all the difference - especially in an emergency. There are many different legal documents that can help you plan how your affairs will be handled in the future. Many of these documents have names that sound alike and because state laws vary, the rules, requirements and forms can vary by State.

Patricia Riley, MBA, Director of Community Relations for Vista Cove at Rancho Mirage and Anita Rufus, an Attorney-at-Law who specializes in end-of-life issues, will provide an overview of the health and end-of-life care documents that can be used to get your affairs in order. These documents include a durable and general power of attorney, advance directives, living wills, trust, physicians orders for life-sustaining treatment, etc. Copies of the pamphlet,   The Five Wishes     , will be available and time will be allotted for questions and answers.

This is really going to be beneficial to people!
~Rev. Patricia
