Schools of the Future Conference: Oct. 26 & 27

The 2017 Schools of the Future Conference will take place on October 26 and 27, at the Hawaii Convention Center. 
It's not too late to Register!

Yale RULER Program  Registration Deadline: Oct. 20

In partnership with the Hawai'i Community Foundation, we are pleased to offer the RULER Training and Program in Hawai'i! Marc Brackett, 2016 Schools of the Future Keynote Speaker, will be leading the training along with his team from the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence. Neighbor Island schools may apply for travel scholarships, made availble by HCF. 
About RULER
The RULER approach is an outgrowth of decades of research on emotional intelligence conducted by Yale University's Centre for Emotional Intelligence, demonstrating that emotional skills are integral to learning, making sound judgements, maintaining physical and mental health, and achieving success in school and beyond. RULER's sustainable evidence-based approach helps schools to develop emotional literacy in students and all of the stakeholders involved in their education, including school leaders, teachers, support staff, and family members.

2017 Global Issues Network Fall Kick-Off Event: Nov. 3
Students and educators are invited to join us for the first GIN event of the school year! This event will feature breakout sessions with NGOs and non-profits, a student panel about how to prepare for the conference and how to engage with the Global Issues Network and the opportunity to connect with other GIN schools. GIN Event - Lo'i Restoration in Kalihi: Nov. 4 
This is an event for those who don't mind getting their hands dirty to help make the city naturally, culturally, and sustainably more vibrant. Building off the amazing momentum from the GIN Kick-Off event, Mid-Pacific is holding a day of service restoring a lo'i in Kalihi, Saturday, November 4, 8:00am to 12:30pm. Those who attended the Kick-Off event can join their fellow GIN members, as well as anyone else who may be interested.

HAIS - Design Thinking One-Day Workshop: Dec. 14
The HAIS-Design Thinking Hawaii Intensive Design Thinking for the Classroom will be a high- energy,  experiential earning experience. Participants will co llaborate  in  teams  by subject areas and grade levels. The workshop is built upon learning by doing and reflection, and participants learn the phases of the design thinking process as they tackle the challenge. The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design's  five-step  process (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, feedback) will be used in the workshop. Teachers will leave with an understanding of how they may apply design thinking into classroom work for students.

Hawai'i Science Bowl Registration Open
Registration is now open for the 2018 Hawai'i Science Bowl. Acceptance  will be on a first come, first served basis for the competition. Localicious Art & Poetry Contest: Oct. 2 - Nov. 9
The Hawai'i  Agricultural Foundation is hosting the 2018 Localicious Hawai'i Art & Poetry Contest; s tudents in grades K-8 are invited to share their creative genius by submitting an art or poetry piece about "Your Favorite Dish Made with Locally Grown and Raised Crop." PLTW & SEN Grant Opportunity: Oct. 16
Strada Education Network (SEN) has partnered with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to provide grant support ranging from $20,000- $45,000 to help Hawaiian high schools offset the implementation expenses of PLTW programs.  Grant funds may be used to offset  PLTW program participation fees, c ore training , r equired equipment, and supplies.

The Aio Foundation is partnering with the UH Athletic Department to present the inaugural Wahine Experience at T.C. Ching Field on October 21. Especially for students 8th grade and under, the event will provide students and their families an opportunity to meet Wahine coaches, players, and celebrity alumni. 2018 PAAC Study Tours for H.S. Students: Nov. 1
The 2018 study tour application deadlines for Hawaii high school students, sponsored by PAAC, are now approaching.  Scholarships are available  for all study tours, though some restrictions may apply for private school students. The upcoming March tour is  the  Polynesian Cultural Exchange Tour to Tahiti; s tudents will hone and share their knowledge of Hawaiian culture and learn about Tahitian culture from their peers and elders in an immersive study tour to French Polynesia.  This takes place over DOE Spring Break 2018, and the application deadline is Nov. 1.

Pacific Regenerative Medicine Conference: Nov. 6 - 7
The inaugural Pacific Regenerative Medicine Conference will be held Nov. 6 and 7 at the Hawai'i Convention Center. At the conference, students will receive an introduction to the regenerative medicine industry, which includes the fields of cell biology, stem cell research, immunology, engineering, genetics, computer science, and robotics. HPU Preview Day Open House: Nov. 11

NOAA Fisheries: Win a Ship Tour: Nov. 14
NOAA Fisheries is currently conducting a Hawaiian Islands Cetacean and Ecosystem Assessment Survey (HICEAS) that searches for whales, dolphins, and seabirds around the Hawaiian Islands. They have put together a comprehensive website with blogs from the field, info about their research, and photos.  NOAA is offering a special opportunity for 1 class (grades 7 or 8) to win  a chance to take a tour of 1 of the NOAA ships that will be at the Aloha Tower on Tuesday,

2018 HAIS District Science Fair: Feb. 9 - 10
The  Hawai'i  Academy of Science (HAS) will host their science fairs this spring. All interested 6 - 12 grade students can begin preparations now for competing at the HAIS District Fair. If your school would like to be involved, please contact HAIS Science Fair Coordinator Michelle Bradley. Race & Ethnicity in the U.S Workshop: Oct. 21
The focus of the  Humanities and the Legacy of Race and Ethnicity in the United States and in Hawai'i workshop is centered on addressing topics of civil rights and racism in the classroom. This workshop is geared towards U.S. History and Language Arts teachers, as well as teachers of Modern History of Hawai'i. Classroom techniques will be discussed as it relates to the topics of race and ethnicity in U.S history and how it relates to the present. HSTE's Hawai'i Education Leadership Summit: Oct. 25
The  Hawai'i Society for Technology in Education ( HSTE) will be hosting its annual Hawaii Education Leadership Summit.  This year's driving question is: "How do we intentionally build bridges in order to, develop, promote, inspire innovation in our schools to foster equity?" Laura McBain from Stanford School of Design/School Retool takes the lead, explaining how to shape the path towards equity and why the work around innovation leads towards equity.  Participants  will create an  EcoSystem Innovation map for the islands, and then work through a series of structured shared and learned sessions. Later, a cohort of consultants that support innovation and equity in the islands will be on hand for feedback on everyone's work. HSTE recommends that each school group has 2-3 attendees.

History through Local Literature Workshop: Nov. 18
The Local and Global History Using Local Literature teacher workshop will feature locally published novels, poems and biographies as tools to aid in teaching local, American, and world history. This includes looking at how to address difficult subjects (racism, genocide, imperialism) in the classroom, as well as using fiction and non-fictional writing in teaching about history.

Mid-Pacific is hosting  EdTechTeam's Google Certified Educator Bootcamp Level I & Level II. These are prep courses for teachers who want to become officially Certified in Level 1 and/or Level 2.

Level 1 Certification Bootcamp
Explore the core areas of G Suite to increase professional learning and leadership; efficiency in the classroom; and student learning and creativity. In addition to the tools, participants are exposed to critical student skill sets necessary for learning in an online environment.

Level 2 Certification Bootcamp
Move beyond the basics of Google Tools and learn how to maximize 21st century learning in the classroom. 'Olelo: Innovative Media for Educators Workshops
'Olelo's Innovative Media for Educators (IME) Program was created in response to  the  growth of their annual Youth Xchange Video Competition, and the increased demand from teachers to integrate media into their classrooms. IME can be an opportunity for youth educators in and outside the classroom; IME aims to equip participants with tools that incorporate media literacy and digital storytelling into any curriculum.  Two courses are being offered:  Educators Workshop, and the  Professional Development Course. The Association for Middle  Level  Education (AMLE)
 is hosting this two-day intensive summit, offering professional learning designed exclusively for middle grades educators. CSEE Meaningful Advisory Programs 2018: Feb. 23 - 24

The Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) will be holding a 2-day workshop on advisory programs.  Presenters Barb Ackerman and Joan Mudge cover all aspects of advisory, share activities and best-practices, and troubleshoot with participants. This workshop can help educators get the most out of advisory time, whether starting a new program or fine-tuning an existing structure.  The weekend culminates in participants creating their own action plans for immediate and long-range goals.  For more details, or if interested in registering, please go to this website .

ESU National Shakespeare Competition: Mar. 3
The 2018 English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition is beginning its first stages. Interested schools can sign up for an in-school competition, and then the winner of each school competes in the Hawai'i branch competition in March, after which the national competition is held in New York.  Please see the invitation for full details.
