The Yale RULER Program is Coming to Hawai'i!
Training Registration Deadline - Oct. 20
In partnership with the Hawai'i Community Foundation, we are pleased to offer the RULER Training in Hawai'i! Marc Brackett, 2016 Schools of the Future Keynote Speaker, will be leading the training along with his team from the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence. Neighbor Island schools may apply for travel scholarships, made availble by HCF.
About RULER
The RULER approach is an outgrowth of decades of research on emotional intelligence conducted by Yale University's Centre for Emotional Intelligence, demonstrating that emotional skills are integral to learning, making sound judgements, maintaining physical and mental health, and achieving success in school and beyond. RULER's sustainable evidence-based approach helps schools to develop emotional literacy in students and all of the stakeholders involved in their education, including school leaders, teachers, support staff, and family members.

Schools of the Future Conference: Student Presentations of Learning (PoL) - Oct. 6
There is still space for a few more student PoL exhibits, which are featured daily from 7:30am - 10:30am. An adult chaperone (teacher or parent) must accompany and be responsible for students, including transporting them to and from the event. Each PoL is open to up to 4 students and 1
adult chaperone. The exhibit should feature student work that is the result of project/design/problem-based learning and can be accommodated on one six-foot table. If you are interested in applying, please fill out the
application form by October 6.

2017 Global Issues Network Fall Kick-Off Event: Nov. 3
Students and educators are invited to join us for the first GIN event of the school year! This event will feature breakout sessions with NGOs and non-profits, a student panel about how to prepare for the conference and how to engage with the Global Issues Network and the opportunity to connect with other GIN schools. This event is open to those anyone interested in GIN.

Annual Men's March Against Violence: Oct. 12
The 23rd annual Men's March Against Violence will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12. MGF Aloha Aina Workshop: Sept. 30
Moanalua Gardens Foundation (MGF) and DLNR's Division of Forestry and Wildlife are hosting a free workshop for fourth grade teachers on their Huaka'i o Kamananui, Aloha Aina Moanalua place-based environmental education curriculum. The workshop includes a teacher's guide, lesson plans, student activity sheets, rubrics, CDs, a DVD and other resources. MGF will provide all materials plus meals and refreshments.

CSEE Meaningful Advisory Programs 2018: Feb. 23 - 24
The Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) will be holding a 2-day workshop on advisory programs.
Presenters Barb Ackerman and Joan Mudge cover all aspects of advisory, share activities and best-practices, and troubleshoot with participants. This workshop can help educators get the most out of advisory time, whether starting a new program or fine-tuning an existing structure.
The weekend culminates in participants creating their own action plans for immediate and long-range goals.

ESU National Shakespeare Competition: Mar. 3
The 2018 English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition is beginning its first stages. Interested schools can sign up for an in-school competition, and then the winner of each school competes in the Hawai'i branch competition in March, after which the national competition is held in New York.

HPA Received 2017 Healthy School Award
Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) was one of three schools selected nationally to receive a 2017 Healthy School Award from The Healthy Facilities Institute (HFI), in partnership with School Planning and Management and College Planning and Management magazines.
Health factors assessed included indoor air quality, chemical exposure, water quality, sound levels, lighting, cleaning and disinfecting, sanitizing and food service, integrated pest management, and ergonomics (musculoskeletal, strains, slips/falls).
Winning schools will be featured in a webinar on Nov. 2,
Thirty Days to Healthy Schools at Lower Cost. The webinar will focus on how healthy schools promote learning, savings, and attendance-based funding, and how any school can develop a framework for a healthy facility and budget within 30 days.
