Message from the Director - Robert Landau
HAIS welcomes Colleen Green!

HAIS is pleased to announce that Colleen Green, Ph.D. will serve as the HAIS Director of Accreditation and Licensing, effective September 1, 2017.
Colleen is currently a Grade 11 Humanities Teacher and Academic Internship Advisor at High Tech High (HTH) in San Diego, California.  In addition to her teaching responsibilities at HTH, she is a  member of the Teacher Credentialing Faculty, the School Leadership Master's Program Faculty, and a Summer/Winter Institute Instructor at the HTH Graduate School of Education. She's also an Adjunct English Professor at Central Texas College (online). Since 2006, Colleen has participated on multiple WASC accreditation teams as both a Visiting Committee Chairperson and Visiting Committee Member.

Some of her other teaching positions before High Tech High have been as the  Adjunct English Instructor at University of San Diego,  Adjunct Composition Instructor at Ivy Tech State College, and  Graduate Teaching Assistant at Purdue University.

Colleen's administrative experience includes the  School Director/Principal at HTH International (2012-2014), and  School Director/Principal at HTH Chula Vista (2007-2011).  Colleen has also worked as an Educational Consultant for schools in Hawaii, Israel, North Dakota,  Michigan, Canada, and South Africa.  She received her B.A. in English and Journalism from Grand Valley State University; M.A. from Bowling Green State University; and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

We look forward to welcoming her to the HAIS team!

HAIS Schools Re-Use: iPad Cases Available  
FoamTech covers/cases for iPad Air 1 - the school approximately has 300 covers total in pink, green, blue, and black. They are in good/very good condition. There are scuff marks on the cases but can be cleaned with a Clorox wipe. If you donʻt have iPads to fit the covers perhaps you might want them for a maker space activity.  Measurements of iPad that used this case:  Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm),  Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm), Depth: 0.29 inch (7.5 mm). The covers are 3 years old.   If you are interested please fill out the HAIS Schools Re-Use Interest Form or send email Megan Polak. They will be given away on a first come first served basis.

HAIS & HONOLULU Magazine Collaboration: Education Cheat Sheet
A new blog post was released on May 15 and is titled " Education Cheat Sheet: Individualized Learning." Assets Schoolʻs Ryan Masa explores the topic of making the traditional classroom more accessible. You can also find the article (and past HAIS & HONOLULU Magazine collaborations) on our website here.

 
HAIS on Island Focus 'Olelo Segment
We are excited to share that HAIS's Deanna D'Olier was featured on 'Olelo's  Island Focus program! Island Focus shares local stories of relevance from Hawaii's government, business, education, and community sectors. The program can now be accessed  online .


HAIS-Design Thinking Hawai'i Workshops: June 28 & July 20

HAIS has partnered with Design Thinking Hawai'i to offer a 2-part workshop experience this S ummer.  These workshops will be high-energy, experiential learning experiences where participants will collaborate in small multidisciplinary teams to solve a hands-on customized innovation challenge. 

Design Thinking Hawai'i Intensive Introduction to Design Thinking (Part I)
The workshop is built upon learning by doing and reflection, and participants learn the phases of the design thinking process as they tackle the challenge. The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design's five-step process (empathy, define, ideate, prototype, feedback) will be used in the workshop.

HAIS Premier Institute: Designing Authentic STEM Experiences and Assessments: July 13

There are only a limited number of spaces left!

You asked, we listened. HAIS is pleased to announce Premier Institutes - affordable workshops that leverage Hawai'i expertise.

In this workshop, participants will explore an adapted instructional design model for projects that allows teachers to unpack the standards for their classroom and design a powerful and effective experience that both maps to standards and allows students to experience learning as real mathematicians and scientists.  The instructor, Dr. Mark Hines, is a math, science, and technology teacher and learner of 35 years, and has spent the past 7 years designing and implementing integrated STEM and Humanities projects in the Mid-Pacific Institute Program "Mid-Pacific eXploratory (MPX)". He presents locally and nationally on project design with a focus on Math, Science and Technology projects.

HCF Travel Grant Opportunity
The Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) is offering  a limited number  of travel scholarships for neighbor island nonprofit organizations, including schools, to increase access and utilization of professional development training that will support organizational capacity. These funds are intended to defray travel costs and may be used for airfare  expenses for nonprofit employees or Board members related to attending training sessions, conferences and educational programs on Oahu or another neighbor island location. Scholarship funds are limited to the purchase of airline tickets only - reimbursement up to $200 per person.
 
To be eligible, the participant's organization must meet the following requirements:
  • The organization is a nonprofit 501(c)3.
  • Maximum of one scholarship per person, per year, will be awarded.
  • Maximum of two scholarships per organization, per year, will be awarded.

DAR American History Essay Contest Winners
The purpose of this contest is to promote American history by honoring significant historical people, places, dates, and events.  The essay contest also offers an opportunity for teachers to enhance and incorporate American history in their curriculum.

For Students, Parents and Educators
SAME Honolulu Post Scholarship Program Application: June 15
This 4-year ($6,000) scholarship is available to High School seniors who will be enrolled in an accredited engineering or architecture program at a 4-year college/university.  Students need only to request their transcripts, and ask their professors/teachers for reference letters (only one letter is required) before school is over.

HPU Young Actors Ensemble Auditions: Starts June 15
YAE was launched in 2007 to give teens from across the state of Hawai`i the opportunity to work with professional artists to learn the crafts of performance and technical theatre. Ensemble auditions for high school students will take place during the summer. Check  here to call or email for auditions.

Homestay Hosts for IHC: July 1 - 2
The International Hospitality Center (IHC) seeks hosts for 14-15 year old high school students (male/female) from Osaka and Kyoto for a one night Weekend Homestay. Students can be placed 1 or 2 per host family and anywhere on the island of Oahu.  Volunteer Hosts (unpaid) are asked to provide  bed/futon/sofa bed and food taken with the family.  
The students  will have been taking part in an intensive English Language program while living at the dorm at  Tokai  International College/West Oahu, prior to the homestay.  Students are anxious to have the opportunity to spend  time with hosts and participate in activities, such as speaking English, trying American/Hawaiian food and sports, or going to the beach.

Annual Goodwill Goes GLAM! Volunteers: July 21 - July 23
Goodwill is once again hosting their Annual Goodwill Goes GLAM! event, presented by Bank of Hawaii Foundation at the Blaisdell Center. They are looking for volunteers to help run it, and can schedule in groups to allow large groups of students and families to volunteer on the same day/shift.
Volunteers will receive Free Event Admission on the day they volunteer, Free Event Volunteer T-Shirt, a 20% discount coupon, and light snacks during their shift.
The retail days are Friday, July 21- Sunday, July 23, 2017.

Schatz Seniors High School Internship Program: Sept. 10
This program  provides a hands-on learning opportunity about the U.S. Senate, creates a forum for students to share issues and information with the Senator and his staff, and encourages students to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities. Activities involve working with outreach staff, identifying issues of interest in an intern's school and community, and attending and staffing special events.  This is not an office position, and students from all islands are encouraged to apply.
The application must be completed by 6:00pm on September 10, 2017.

24th Annual Children and Youth Summit: Oct. 13
The Hawaii State Legislature's Keiki Caucus will hold the 24th Annual Children and Youth Summit on Friday, October 13, 2017. In addition to an array of breakout sessions, community leaders, business professionals, children and youth will provide a rich and diverse panel discussion.
The participants assist the Legislature in identifying key children and youth issues that need to be addressed in future Legislative Sessions. The Summit Planning Team   would like to hear from children and youth on what kind of discussion topics they would like to be included in this year's summit.

U.S Service Academy Nominations: Oct. 20
Senator Schatz has the privilege of nominating exceptional students from the state of Hawai'i for appointment to the U.S. Service Academies. An official nomination is required for admission to each of the Service Academies except the United States Coast Guard Academy. 
Due to a competitive and thorough selection process, students are encouraged to apply to their Congressional sponsors and Service Academies in the spring of their junior year (however, students in their senior year will also be considered).
Applications are due by 6:00pm on October 20, 2017.

UH Manoa SOEST Open House: Oct. 20 - 21
The UHM School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) Open House will be coming up this fall! Learn about volcanoes, tsunamis, El Niño, planetary exploration, hurricanes, coastal erosion, marine ecosystems, and more. There will be hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids of all ages to enjoy. Meet the scientists who are making the discoveries and tour their state-of-the-art facilities.

Third Annual Visual Arts Intensive: 7th & 8th Grade Painting & Drawing: June 10 - 11
Master Waldorf educator Van James is hosting a hands-on weekend drawing and painting workshop from June 10-11, 9am to 3pm. The course will look at how to best support the development of visual thinking in pre-adolescent students and promote healthy, fine-motor skills through specific artistic themes and techniques.

Annual Creative Reuse Open House for Educators: July 22

 

Educators and their families are invited to join Art Explorium in their studio to get free art supplies and project ideas, and to make connections with community partners. This year, the focus is on marine animals, ocean conservation, and plastic free initiatives. Virtual Reality & Thinglink VR Workshops for Educators: All Islands: July 22-29
Learn how Virtual Reality is changing the classroom. During this workshop, participants will  learn  how to engage students by creating their own VR experiences. The  workshop  will explore: Google Expeditions, Google Street View, creating 360° photos & videos, lesson plan design, curriculum integration, and more.  Ideas for lesson plans and curriculum integration across grades and subjects will be shared and participants will receive free extended access to the Thinglink VR tool for this workshop.

UH Manoa High School  Counselor's  Workshop: Sept. 8

Each fall, the UH Mānoa Office of Admissions hosts the annual High School Counselors Workshop for Hawaiʻi high school counselors who work with juniors and seniors. This  free  event includes a resource fair, tours, important information, and sessions showcasing various opportunities at UH Mānoa. The goal of this workshop is to update local counselors about the latest at Mānoa so their students can make informed decisions when choosing colleges.  An email notification will be sent to their contact list when registration for this workshop opens in July.
