Ejected From Your Seat

People who ride horses for sport know very well that mishaps can result in very serious injury. If you think about it, it's like riding a motorcycle-but the motorcycle is jumping up and down and has pretty skinny legs, considering how heavy it is. Actually, never mind. This might be freakier than riding a motorcycle. Funny Photo

Announcing the 2018 Emerging Writer Awards
We are thrilled to announce this year's winners of the Cecelia Joyce Johnson Award, the Marianne Russo Award, and the Scotti Merrill Memorial Award.

The overall quality of the hundreds of submissions we received is testament that we live in a vibrant time and in a world that is animated, informed, and documented by powerful literary impulses. Unique and divergent works are being produced by an astonishing number of writers. It is a good time to be a reader.

CECELIA JOYCE JOHNSON AWARD

for a short story
Dantiel W. Moniz  is a homegrown Floridian and MFA candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in  Tin House Apogee Journal , and elsewhere. She has received support and residencies from Hedgebrook and the Whiting Foundation, and is currently at work on her first novel and short story collection.

Something Fishy Underwater

This photo makes you want to go snorkeling and try to capture a similar shot of your own, right? Think about how weird it feels to swim your way through a huge school of fish. It's part live-action Spongebob Squarepants and part fishy photobomb-it's definitely frame worthy. ThoughtCo

True Stealth Mode

If this pupper was aware of the kitty hanging from the doorframe, wouldn't he be looking at it? This cat could drop at any time and give that poor dog a serious scare. On the other hand, maybe it's such a standard occurrence that he doesn't care. Top13

Minibike Problems

This is why it's best to check the nuts and bolts that make up your bicycle, motorized or otherwise. He was probably dizzy from all of those donuts. Other than that, though, this guy probably escaped with less than a bruise. Gotta love the ultra-low clearance of a minibike. Keptelensag

Is This Why Women Live Longer Than Men?

Seriously, guys? Using a front loader to hoist up a ladder and take down a tree? The lawnmower responsible for supporting this load is barely big enough to manage a front yard. Really, though, here's to these guys and their determination. Someone out there has to make the bad decisions that the rest of us learn from! Omofan

 Nov. 15-19

Thank you for all the feedback and enthusiasm for our opening night feature  The Shape of Water,  written and directed by Oscar Nominated  Guillermo del Toro.  It is a stunning film that we can't wait to show you next week . . . Yes, we're just a few days to opening night of the 2017 Key West Film Festival!

By now you know that KWFF's  Centerpiece Film for 2017  is Luca Guadagnino's  Call Me By Your Name,  featuring a discussion with Joshua Rothkopf, Kenneth Turan, Brian Brooks, and Eugene Hernandez of the  Film Society of Lincoln Center.   If you haven't already . . . . explore the website to get other programming details for the festival this year;  five days of film where Passion Meets Paradise.   As we have done with years past, KWFF programmers bring the best in LGBT and Queer Cinema to venues during our five day celebration of film.  This November 15-19, we have created a showcase of films that celebrate the LGBTQ community in every corner of the world!

The response to our Full Program Schedule has been pretty encouraging!  Michael Tuckman, Quincy Perkins, and others at the Key West Film Festival have been working hard the past 10 months curating a 2017 film festival experience that will top those of years past.  This year we're making a pretty big splash on opening night, pun intended, as we screen
The Shape of Water, written and directed by Oscar Nominated

Guillermo del Toro.
Who better to introduce the move on 2017's Opening Night than the man himself, Guillermo del Toro!  The famed filmmaker who has brought such cult classics and blockbusters as the
Hellboy and
Blade movie series,

The Hobbit Trilogy
Pacific Rim movie series, and
Pan's Labyrinth.  His creative mind and beautiful story telling have captivated audiences for over two decades.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN

Chuck Licis sends regards : Are you ready to make a difference? Take Stock in Children, the flagship college scholarship program of the Monroe County Education Foundation, is ready to welcome a
record.
number of new students provided that enough mentors step forward.
"We have a fantastic group of 77 qualified candidates who are ready to join Take Stock in Children and work towards achieving their goal of a college education. However, if we do not have a volunteer mentor to match with the student, we cannot accept the student into our program," said MCEF president Bryan Green.
Take Stock needs a minimum of 50 new mentors in the Lower Keys, 15 in Marathon, and 15 in the Upper Keys to pair with incoming Take Stock scholars.
"While our mission is to accept all students who meet the academic and economic eligibility requirements, and who have the desire, motivation, and potential to go to college," program coordinator Chuck Licis explained, "we can't bring them into the program without a mentor match."

Who can be a mentor?  "Mentors are not tutors or counselors. Mentors are caring, compassionate adults who volunteer their time to guide, support, and encourage our Take Stock scholars. It only takes 45 minutes a week during the school year," Licis explained. "Our mentors are screened and trained before being paired with a student, and we have college success coaches in each area to assist and support our mentors and students."
Take Stock students are given the 'chance of a lifetime' with mentoring in middle and high school followed by the scholarship that pays for four years college tuition and fees. A student is waiting for his or her chance of a lifetime, a college scholarship, but we need your help to make the dream a reality! If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Karla Quintana in the TSIC office at 305-293-1546 or at  Karla.Quintana@keysschools.com

Conversation And Poolside Relaxation-Or Not

Lady, what are you doing standing right on the edge of a pool?! Maybe she's had one mai-tai too many-or perhaps she knows exactly what she's doing? Here's hoping she didn't have a cell phone in

Deep Breathing

The pair responsible for posing and shooting this photo definitely planned it ahead of time. The end result is fantastic but frightening, because wouldn't you end up with a face full of rocks and sand after this? Eh, whatever-sometimes you've just gotta do it for the Instagram. Namaste. Pintarest

The Birthday Cake Fail

You haven't felt disappointment until you've dropped a birthday cake that doesn't belong to you. Bonus points if the cake is for a super special birthday, like the sweet sixteen sheet pictured here. If you get lucky, the person who's celebrating their birthday will be able to laugh it off. Fishki

Gotta Love The Attack Suit

It's got to be really freaky to train police dogs. Even when you're covered in a suit of armor, those first few attacks have to send your brain into panic mode. This type of training starts in the puppy stage, so that must make for a fun couple of years for the canine. MainFun

"Woods' story has many pulp-fiction trademarks, including a slew of seedy characters and plenty of sex and violence. But the book isn't as hard-boiled as readers may anticipate...A gleefully convoluted final act includes Nazis, unexpected deaths, and an over-the-top villainous plot. We now have our Final few Photos in our On-Line Photographic Exhibition " Perfectly-Timed Photos Taken Moments Before an Incident"

A Poor Judgement Party

This could be some sort of Halloween party, but with the poor judgment behind bicycle riding over a bonfire, let's assume it's just a normal weekend for this squad. The depth of field seems to show that this guy didn't land in the fire-but there's still panic flashing through his body. Ebaums World

Showing Off A Lack Of Skills

These people must be at the end of a night filled with partying. Why else would you be posing with a thumbs up for a photo with a pizza? No matter what they're doing, though, they hopefully had another pizza in the freezer for backup. Falling food always lands face down, and that's a fact. Buzzly

Gymnastics And Pool Decks Don't Mix

It looks like this guy was attempting some sort of backflip or somersault into the pool. The whole thing would probably look pretty great if it worked out in his favor, but he was hit with some bad luck instead. He probably ended up with a broken nose and hopefully kept all of his teeth. Votlina

It's Going Down, I'm Yelling Timber

Yikes. This would be one of those heart-stopping moments of fear that we usually encounter at least once as drivers. What are you even supposed to do if this happens? If you're lucky enough to get out of the way, probably get on the phone with your lawyer. zak news

Irma was a reminder that the cost of our delicate string of islands is the knowledge that nature comes along once in a while to wipe the slate clean. Still, signs of our resilience abound: an orchid blooming days after the storm; a 150 year old wooden house, built by shipwrights and standing tall; or neighbors helping each other clean up. Creativity often works the same way; it returns with new focus after a test. For our first post-Irma Members show we invite you to reflect on the things that bend but don't break, the things that last, and the things that matter

Organizations mergeKey West Art & Historical Society and Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit keep the legacy alive

After a year of meetings between their respective boards, the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit, its board, and membership will merge with Key West Art & Historical Society, making the Exhibit The Society's fourth museum, and uniting the two organizations and their growing memberships of passionate Key West arts and history supporters.

"Since working with The Society in 2011 to launch the first Tennessee Williams birthday celebration and with the continued growth and expansion of the Exhibit, our board of directors thought that a merger with a larger, established non-profit was the next logical step," says Tennessee Williams Exhibit founder and curator Dennis Beaver.

Beaver moved to Key West in 1979, when Tennessee Williams was a prominent figure not only on the island, but all over the world. After Williams' death in 1983, Beaver decided to help bring more recognition to the iconic writer who had lived on the island for thirty-four years.  With the help of The Society in 2011, Beaver organized a successful 100 th anniversary birthday celebration.

"This success gave me the initiative to start collecting Williams memorabilia and to start showing them in a small space on Truman Avenue," says Beaver.

The exhibit has grown to become a destination for Tennessee Williams enthusiasts and scholars as well as an incorporated organization with many supporting members, offering a full roster of writing and painting contests, film forums and the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration. The preserved and showcased collection of historic, archival materials helps keep alive the importance of Williams' literary legacy and offers the largest collection of Tennessee Williams memorabilia and literary artifacts available to the public. Displays include artist Jane Rohrschneider's recently completed model of the playwright's former home at 1431 Duncan Street where he lived from 1949 until his death in 1983, first edition plays and books, images from the late local photographer Don Pinder, and original steps from the film adaptation of Williams' play "The Rose Tattoo" which was filmed entirely in Key West.

"We are fortunate that Dennis has already done such a wonderful job in telling this important history," says Key West Art & Historical Society Executive Director Michael Gieda.  "As an organization whose mission is to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Florida Keys, The Society is honored to continue Dennis' work in promoting Williams' legacy."

The Society currently complements the Tennessee Williams Exhibit with a display of Williams' paintings at the Custom House Museum. The Truman Avenue exhibit - which will soon be called The Tennessee Williams Museum - will continue to offer visitors entertaining and informative self-guided tours as well as pre-arranged curator-led tours portraying the history of one of America's greatest 20 th Century playwrights, who won multiple awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

"There has been collaboration on projects through the years and there is a history of cooperation and support that the merger will build on," says Beaver, who will continue to consult and guest curate the museum.  The Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit on 513 Truman Avenue is currently open from 10am-5pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sundays. Starting on December 15, hours will be 9:30am-4:30pm daily.  For more information, contact Key West Art & Historical Society at 305-295-6616 or visit  WWW.KWAHS.ORG .   Your Museums.  Your Community.  It Takes an Island.

As the Florida Keys continue to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma, Key West's 126-year-old Custom House hosts their annual "Back In Time" fundraiser on Wednesday, November 29 from 5:00pm - 10:00pm, an event that will support the building's ongoing preservation needs and address current disrepair, raise funds to help support Habitat for Humanity's hurricane-recovery efforts, and toast Scotti Merrill Preservation Award recipient Tom Hambright, one of the best historians and collection-keepers of Key West history.
The second annual "Back In Time" fundraiser is an opportunity for The Society to raise much-needed capital to support their preservation mission. When The Society became stewards of the county-owned building in 1991, it was in near-derelict condition, boarded up and left to sit untouched in the salt air and sun for over two decades. Original leadership spearheaded an ambitious 9-year, 9 million-dollar renovation with the generous support of the community and the late Scotti Merrill.  The current Society team continues with the steady efforts and dedication necessary to maintain and preserve the building many consider "Key West's architectural crown jewel."
Last year's inaugural event raised $120,000, monies that will help overhaul the building's failing climate control system, "essential to preserving both the building and the collection," says Executive Director Michael Gieda. They hope this year's event will help raise a portion of the remaining $300,000 needed to complete the repairs. Due to Space Constraints I needed to edit this event ; However go to their website for additional Info...

Editors note : As you know this Magazine does not put in Accidents-Robberies due to Space Constraints. But this Accident Really Deserves Publishing since perhaps our readers can give a little more attention to the road remembering this.
A Louisiana man died yesterday when his rental scooter crashed into a car at the intersection of White Street and United.

At around 7:30 Wednesday, Louis Lee Bayhi III, 41, was traveling southbound on White Street, passing cars on the right. At the intersection, Key West resident Thomas Greenman was traveling northbound and made a left turn onto United Street.
Bayhi's scooter hit the side of the turning car. Bayhi was declared dead at the scene. Bayhi resided in Covington, LA.

The intersection was closed for approximately 3 hours for the investigation, which is ongoing.
Key West Mayor Craig Cates, during this week's City Commission meeting, proclaimed November 7 - 11 as Buddy Poppy Days, in honor of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The poppy has been named the official memorial flower for Veterans of Foreign Wars, as it represents the blood shed by American Service members. Since 1922, the VFW has been making and distributing these symbolic reminders to reiterate that the VFW will never forget their sacrifice.

With Veteran's Day approaching, members of the VFW will be distributing them around town. The flowers are assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals. The proceeds of the poppy sales are donated to the VFW Relief Fund to assist these veterans in need.

On the last official days of the 2017 hurricane season (November 30 and December 1) the crew at COAST - the Stock Island based artist and craftsman collective - has organized a two-day benefit concert festival, aptly named "Coast Is Clear", with the goal of raising money and spirits for the Florida Keys community in the wake of hurricane Irma.

To date, the lineup includes national touring artists G. Love, Langhorne Slim, Rayland Baxter and Rorey Carroll - all of whom play to large crowds from coast to coast and at huge festivals like Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza and Monterrey Pop. In addition, local favorites Patrick and The Swayzees and The Skank - among others - will add local flavor to the stages over the two-day event.

The current schedule calls for the Thursday (11/30) performances to take place in the Bahama Village neighborhood with events shifting between Blue Heaven, Green Parrot and The COAST Outpost (803 Whitehead Street). While Friday (12/1) shows will take place on Stock Island at Hogfish and COAST - both located on Front Street.

Says COAST founder Billy Kearins, "We were amazed at how well the community came together after the storm hit and it inspired us to try to create something positive and uplifting in the wake of such devastation. Our concerts have always been a great way for locals to come together for a night, so we figured, let's do that again, while at the same time using the event as a way to raise money for those hit hardest by the storm."

He then added, "So, I got in touch with some friends who play music for a living and was pretty amazed that they all said, 'yeah, we'd love to come down.'"

At the moment, the two-day event will feature more than ten performances spread over the two evenings. Two-day and Friday-only passes can be purchased on the COAST website at www.coastprojects.com/store

Imporatant Message from your QuarterMaster

Don't know if you are aware, but our Post sustained major damage from IRMA and will be closed for the foreseeable future.  We are currently doing the "insurance and contractor dance" and have begun soliciting support to help offset the expenses of both repairs and paying all our reoccurring monthly expenses without the benefit of income.   Any checks can be made out to VFW Post 3911 and mailed to the address below.  Also, anyone who would rather do donations digitally, can go to PayPal and make them to our account:   VFW391110@Yahoo.com

Since we had a lot of blue on the building to begin with, the tarps on there now kind of blend in and haven't been noticed by many in the community.   I have attached a couple pictures to illustrate the damage. We were hoping that some of your many followers might be inclined to help us out.
Thank you! Ken Thompson, USN (Retired) Quartermaster, Veterans of Foreign Wars Southernmost Post 3911. 2200 N Roosevelt Blvd., Key West, FL 33040, Post: 305-294-9968, Office: 305-414-8310

Sheriff buys equipment for crime fighting partners.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay presented three GPS / Radar units to Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Captain Dave Dipre on Friday. The equipment, purchased with fine and forfeiture funds and not tax dollars - will help boost the crime fighting abilities of FWC officers as they patrol the waters surrounding the Florida Keys.
"I believe in teamwork and partnerships," said Sheriff Ramsay. "We all work together here in the Florida Keys and helping FWC do a better job by providing them with this much needed equipment will help us all do a better job of fighting crime in our county. We all have the same mission: keeping our citizens safe."
