2018 LSOTF Conference: Early Bird Rate Ending 1/31
Early Bird Registration will be available for both the Pre-Conference Workshops and the full 2-day Conference through January 31st. Early Childhood Educators Workshop: Feb. 17
There will be a FREE early childhood educators workshop, entitled "Addressing the Nature of Challenging Behavior in Young Children," on Hawai'i Island, February 17. The workshop will consist of presentations by experts about classroom strategies, working with parents and teaching pro-social behavior, along with opportunities for conversations to support the social-emotional growth of our early learners and is appropriate for pre-school through grade 3 educators. HAIS and HONOLULU Magazine: Member Events
In addition to the Private School Guide and the Education Cheat Sheet collaborations, HAIS is pleased to announce another opportunity with HONOLULU Magazine for HAIS member schools. HONOLULU Family will be creating a page on their website to list HAIS member school events that are of an educational or informational nature, and open to the public (such presentations, talks, or lectures). Not only will this provide a way to further promote the work you are doing in your schools, it is also a wonderful service opportunity for the community. To submit an event for consideration, please complete this submission form. Upon approval, events will be published on both the HAIS and HONOLULU Family websites, and communicated out via both organizations' social media outlets. Submissions will be accepted on an ongoing basis, through the HAIS website.
Kaimuki Christian School has 2 New Vice Principals
Kaimuki Christian School (KCS) has selected Lindon Kanakanui as Vice Principal and Jane McClair as Associate Vice Principal. Kanakanui will oversee all upper school administrative functions, spearhead fundraising initiatives, and lead the school's charitable and outreach programs. Kanakanui holds a doctorate in education leadership, two master's degrees, and a bachelor's degree of music in education. He is a member of the Hawaii Music Educators Association and the Oahu Band Directors Association, and is a volunteer for Anchor Church and River of Life Mission.
As Associate Vice Principal, Jane McClair will develop policies and programs to advance learning, provide mentorship to theschool's educators, and create partnerships with community organizations. The position, formerly held by Kanakanui, goes to McClair after nearly 30 years of education experience in primary school education. A teacher at KCS since 2005, McClair previously served as director of Kuwae Preschool in Okinawa, and at Navy Hale Keiki. McClair holds a Master's degree in Education from Chaminade University.
Webinar on Blended/Online Learning: Jan. 17, 2018
In this free 1.5-hour interactive webinar entitled "Implementing Blended/Online Learning At Your Pace," proven strategies for incorporating blended learning into your class experience and implementing online courses into student programs will be discussed. Learn about the different types of blended learning, and the multiple entry points that allow teachers to start small, or jump right in. Have your questions answered by educators with practical experience with blended and fully virtual learning from The Virtual High School, a non-profit organization with over 20 years in online/blended education and collaboration with independent schools around the world. 2018 Global Issues Network Conference: Mar. 9 - 11
The 2nd annual Global Issues Network Conference will take place March 9 - 11, 2018, at Le Jardin Academy. This year's theme is Ka Po'aiapuni Wai (the water cycle), which connects all living things. The three day conference will include student workshops, keynote speakers, networking and collaboration opportunities and overnight camping. Travel Grants
HAIS will award a limited number of travel grants, on a first come, first served basis to Neighbor Island member schools. Monies awarded must be used to offset airfare and hotel expenses, and will range from $450 - $1350, for 1 to 3 attendees, per school. Upon completion and approval of the
Application Form, further details of the grant procedure will be communicated to the award recipients. Reimbursement of documented travel costs up to the amount of the award, will occur upon completion of the conference. Please contact Deanna D'Olier, at [email protected], with any questions.

Carnegie Hall NYO Jazz Program: Feb. 1
Starting in the summer of 2018, Carnegie Hall is launching NYO Jazz as a sister program to the National Youth Orchestra of the USA. NYO Jazz is an ensemble of about 25 high school jazz musicians, ages 16-19, who will come together for two weeks of training with faculty, make a debut at Carnegie Hall on the stage on Stern Auditorium, and then travel to Europe, all-expenses-paid, to visit several of the most prestigious festivals in the UK, Holland, and Germany.

Top 100 Leadership Challenge: Feb. 15
In June 2018, Fort Lauderdale will host the selected international school students gathering to define, evaluate, develop and share solutions to pressing environmental, political and future-tense issues. AAIE, Global Issues Network (GIN), and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will provide a Full Week Summer Program, called the "Top 100 Global Citizens Leadership Challenge," that will showcase these students' current international and local impact projects, while nurturing their understanding of leadership, developing their global network, and expanding their strategies for collaborative change. Together they will search for expanded solutions and new ideas to create a sustainable and compassionate future for their inherited world. Please see

STEM Symposium for Girls:
Girls in the 9th to 12th grades are invited; students will hear from and network with women working in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields.
MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is the Internet-based competition for high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing STEM majors and careers. The contest is open to all U.S. students, and will award top teams this year with $100,000 in scholarships toward the pursuit of higher education. Working in teams of 3-5, participants come up with their best solution to an open-ended, math-modeling problem focused on a realistic issue in 14 hours. Complete details, rules, practice problems, and a downloadable handbook on getting started with math modeling are available online. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) has announced its 2018 Art Poster Contest. This year's theme is "Sustainable Transit: Green My Ride," and high school student-artists in grades 9-12 can convey the theme using one of two categories: Traditional or Digital Art. Please see

Ethnomathematics Graduate Certificate: Feb. 15
An invitation to all teachers, not just math, to earn a graduate certificate in Ethnomathematics from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa College of Education in 11 months. Punahou School will be hosting The Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) Meaningful Advisories Workshop on Friday, Feb. 23rd, 2018 at 4:00-8:30pm, and Saturday, Feb. 24th, 2018 at 8:00-3:00 pm. This two-day workshop will focus on how to design an advisory program that works, and how to be an effective advisory teacher. Diplomacy Simulations Program
The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program team at the Institute of International Education have announced the free availability online of the U.S. Diplomacy Center's Diplomacy Simulations Program, designed to expose students to the world of foreign affairs, and help them develop the 21st century skill set they will need to be competitive in today's global economy. Under the guidance of a teacher, high school and college-level students can use these materials to work in teams to find solutions to hypothetical foreign affairs issues, such as international migration, trade, environmental sustainability, or global health.
