HAIS - Design Thinking One-Day Workshop: Dec. 14
The
HAIS-Design Thinking Hawaii Intensive: Design Thinking for the Classroom will be a high-
energy,
experiential
earning experience. Participants will co
llaborate
in
teams
by subject areas and grade levels. The workshop is built upon learning by doing and reflection, and participants learn the phases of the design thinking process as they tackle the challenge. The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design's
five-step
process (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, feedback) will be used in the workshop. Teachers will leave with an understanding of how they may apply design thinking into classroom work for students.

Hoʻōla Nā Pua Education Presentation: Nov. 30, Dec. 7
The In-School Educational Program, Sexual Exploitation of Minors in Hawai'i, is Hoʻōla Nā Pua's version of stranger danger for teens in the 21st century. This program teaches teens what sex trafficking of minors is, and how to recognize the signs before it happens to them or someone they know. The two presentation opportunities are open to a
ll teens, tweens, families, and friends.
Everyone who registers receives one free door prize ticket.

LifeSmarts Hawai'i Registration Still Open: Dec. 1
Teams can now take the online competition quizzes for a chance to qualify for the in-person, gameshow-style State Competition on February 3, 2017. Registration is still open. The online competition closes on Dec. 1, 2017 at 7:00pm (HST).
The State Champion team will have the opportunity to represent Hawai'i at the National Competition on April 21-24, 2018 in San Diego, CA.

Annual DAR Essay Contest: Dec. 15
The annual Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) essay contest is now open.
The topic this year for Grades 9-12 (Christopher Columbus Essay) is "Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties."
The Grade 5-8 topic (American History Essay) is "World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars."

Hawai'i Ocean Sciences Bowl: Feb. 3
This
February, the Hawai'i regional competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), called the "Aloha Bowl," will be held at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa campus. The NOSB is a national high school academic competition through which students test their knowledge of marine sciences and policy. During the competition, students will be tested through quick-answer buzzer questions, and team challenge questions. The winning team from each of the regional competitions is provided transportation and room and board to advance to the NOSB finals, held in April, 2018.

HPU4Hawai'i Scholarship Workshops: Feb. 11
The HPU4Hawai'i Scholarship Challenge is an opportunity for students to receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to attend Hawai'i Pacific University. HPU wants to know what ideas students have to create a positive social, environmental, or economic impact for Hawai'i. BWS Poster & Poetry Contest: Feb. 28, 2018
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is seeking entries for its annual
Water Conservation Week. The
Poster Contest is open to Oahu students in grades K-6,
and the
Poetry Contest
is
open to Oahu students in grades 7-12. This year's theme is "Conserve Water: Use It Wisely." Students are encouraged to remind others, in their artwork or poem, why it's important to use Hawai'i's drinking water wisely, and offer ideas on how to be more water-efficient in everyone's daily lives.
