2018 LSOTF Conference Registration is Open
Registration for the 2nd annual Leading Schools of the Future Conference is now open!  Early Bird Registration will be available for both the Pre-Conference Workshop, run by Dr. Yong Zhao, and the full 2-day Conference through January 31st. For more information, ticket prices and registration dates, please visit the LSOTF Webpage. HAIS and HONOLULU Magazine: Member Events

In addition to the Private School Guide and the Education Cheat Sheet collaborations, HAIS is pleased to announce another opportunity with HONOLULU Magazine for HAIS member schools.  HONOLULU Family will be creating a page on their website to list HAIS member school events that are of an educational or informational nature, and open to the public (such presentations, talks, or lectures). Not only will this provide a way to further promote the work you are doing in your schools, it is also a wonderful service opportunity for the community.  To submit an event for consideration, please complete this submission form . Upon approval, events will be published on both the HAIS and HONOLULU Family websites, and communicated out via both organizations' social media outlets. Submissions will be accepted on an ongoing basis, through the  HAIS website .
Webinar on Blended/Online Learning: Jan. 17, 2018
In this free 1.5-hour interactive webinar entitled "Implementing Blended/Online Learning At Your Pace," proven strategies for incorporating blended learning into your class experience and implementing online courses into student programs will be discussed. Here, you will learn about the different types of blended learning, and the multiple entry points that allow teachers to start small, or jump right in. You will have the opportunity to have your questions answered by educators with practical experience with blended and fully virtual learning from The Virtual High School, a non-profit organization with over 20 years in online/blended education and collaboration with independent schools around the world.  Please see this link to register; after registration, you'll receive a confirmation email with information about joining the webinar. For more information, please contact Xuan You, Director of Global Programs and Services.

2018 Global Issues Network Conference: Mar. 9 - 11

The 2nd annual Global Issues Network Conference will take place March 9 - 11, 2018, at Le Jardin Academy. This year's theme is Ka Po'aiapuni Wai (the water cycle), which connects all living things. The three day conference will include student workshops, keynote speakers, networking and collaboration opportunities and overnight camping. Hawai'i Youth Sustainability Challenge: Dec. 15 
Students from grades 6-12 from Hawai ʻ i public, private, and charter schools are invited to apply for Mini-Grants through the Hawai'i Youth Sustainability Challenge (HYSC). This project has students design, prototype, and i mplement their own innovative and creative sustainability ideas. For more information, please see their website.

HYSC Student Checklist:
1) Review the  HYSC Program Overview
2) Create your HYSC Team
3) Develop a Hawaiʻi specific sustainability project or idea
4) Submit your HYSC Mini-Grant Application via the  Kokua Hawai'i Foundation Grant Portal by the deadline.

Carnegie Hall NYO Jazz Program: Feb. 1, 2018

Starting in the summer of 2018, Carnegie Hall is launching NYO Jazz as a sister program to the National Youth Orchestra of the USA.  NYO Jazz is an ensemble of about 25 high school jazz  musicians , ages 16-19, who will come together for two weeks of training with faculty, make a debut at Carnegie Hall on the stage on Stern Auditorium, and then travel to Europe, all-expenses-paid, to visit several of the most prestigious festivals in the UK, Holland, and Germany.
The audition process is entirely online, and details can be found on their website.

Top 100 Leadership Challenge: Feb. 15, 2018
In June 2018, Fort Lauderdale will host the selected international school students gathering to define, evaluate, develop and share solutions to pressing environmental, political and future-tense issues. AAIE, Global Issues Network (GIN), and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will provide a Full Week Summer Program, called the "Top 100 Global Citizens Leadership Challenge," that will showcase these students' current international and local impact projects, while nurturing their understanding of leadership, developing their global network, and expanding their strategies for collaborative change. Together they will search for expanded solutions and new ideas to create a sustainable and compassionate future for their inherited world. HART Art Poster Contest: Feb. 28, 2018

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) has announced its 2018 Art Poster Contest. This year's theme is "Sustainable Transit: Green My Ride," and high school student-artists in grades 9-12 can convey the theme using one of two categories: Traditional or Digital Art. BWS Poster & Poetry Contest: Feb. 28, 2018
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is seeking entries for its annual  Water Conservation Week. The  Poster Contest is open to Oahu students in grades K-6,  and the  Poetry Contest  is  open to Oahu students in grades 7-12. This year's theme is "Conserve Water: Use It Wisely." Students are encouraged to remind others, in their artwork or poem, why it's important to use Hawai'i's drinking water wisely, and offer ideas on how to be more water-efficient in everyone's daily lives.  The contest entry form, complete contest rules, and additional information are available on their website For any questions, please contact the BWS's Communications Office directly.

Yoga Ed. works with school communities to promote health and wellness through mindful movement programs. Our program combines in-person professional development workshops with 400+ online brain breaks and yoga classes to give teachers the confidence to improve focus and promote positive behavior with easy-to-use mindfulness tools. EIH Hawai'i School Empowerment Conference: Jan. 20
The Education Institute of Hawai'i (EIH) is pleased to announce the 4th  Annual Hawai'i School Empowerment Conference  to be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018,  at the Hawai'i Convention Center.  A Day of Keynotes by Bill Daggett, Eric Sheninger, Tom Murray, Ted Dintersmith, Jimmy Casas, Sheree Speakman, Gillian Williams, and Tom Boasberg. Edcamp Kauai
HSTE Kauai is having their 4th Annual Edcamp, which are are participant driven "Unconferences," where sessions are determined based on attendee interest and expertise. This free event includes lunch, and attendees will be eligible for prizes, including a Terry Chung Surfboard, a free registration to the Kauai Google Summit in March, and more. Kauai Google Summit for Education
Next year will be the first ever Google Summit for Education on Kauai.  This event will be two days of professional development, where participants can choose from sessions about all the Apps in the G Suite for Education (Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drawing, YouTube, Classroom, Maps, and more). Session choices will also include project-based learning, assistive technology, STEM, and others. Please see their flyer for more information.

Computer Science Workshop: Jan. 27, 2018
Code.org believes that c omputer science (CS) is foundational knowledge for all students in the 21st century.  With their help , Shane Asselstine is providing a  one-day workshop  for elementary school teachers interested in teaching CS.  Workshop includes  an intro to CS, overview of the online curriculum, and strategies for teaching "unplugged" activities.  For more information, see this flyer ,  or register here . The Hawai'i Council of Teachers of Mathematics (HCTM) presents their Annual Spring Conference, titled Teaching for Understanding.. The event is coming up on January 27, 2018 at Moanalua High School. CSEE Meaningful Advisories Workshop: Feb. 23 - 24, 2018

Punahou School will be hosting The Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) Meaningful Advisories Workshop on Friday, Feb. 23rd, 2018 at 4:00-8:30pm, and Saturday, Feb. 24th, 2018 at 8:00-3:00 pm. Diplomacy Simulations Program
The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program team at the Institute of International Education have announced the free availability online of the  U.S. Diplomacy Center's Diplomacy Simulations Program , designed to expose students to the world of foreign affairs, and help them develop the 21st century skill set they will need to be competitive in today's global economy.  Under  the guidance of a teacher, h igh school and college-level students can use these materials to work in teams to find solutions to hypothetical foreign affairs issues, such as international migration, trade, environmental sustainability, or global health.
